Do You Do Your Sun Or Your Moon More?

Filed in Moons

Every now and then, an argument comes around which basically posits that the Moon sign is as important as, if not more important than the Sun sign. And that the reason the Sun has become SO super-prominent is not so much because it is the centre of this galaxy but because <insert “because of the patriarchy” argument of your choice here>.   I

In most cultures, ancient and modern, the Sun is associated with more individualistic, “Yang”and thrusting qualities. Most Sun deities are male. The Moon has always been credited with being “receptive”, to do with “emotions” and Yin. And yes, most Moon deities are female. The was a Babylonian Moon GOD – as in male – called Sin. And of course there are female Goddesses associated with the Sun – eg; Hathor – but still.

So when I was an avid teenager astrologer, i remember this informed but very sexist astrological teacher saying that “the Sun is what we must aspire to – while the Moon is what we are, when we can’t help it.” And then he launched into a diatribe about how men are in fact more aspirational and transcendent by nature while women are just passive forces of nature, organic like the tides and menstruation blah blah blah.

So leaving aside ALL previous concepts about Sun/Moon, Yin/Yang and gender identity – do you “do” your Sun more readily and repress your Moon or are your Solar-Lunar energies balanced?

If you don’t know your Moon sign, it is readily looked up on Astrodienst.

And to get totally into this – question: If your Sun and Moon were to have a dialogue – how would it go?

Belated thought: my Capricorn moon starting to (sort of) work with progressed cancerian moon based on a game that I’m calling Emotional Tetris. With all the same pitfalls and successes hahaha.

Interesting point. I always felt like people in general (with no thought on which gender exclusively) were either more likely to be lunar or solar. Very few I have witnessed to be a perfect balance. In my mind neither takes precedence over the other. In astrology we become aware that each energy has its own significant role to play and own intrinsic balance when keeping in mind the universal pattern as a whole. Having said that, the solar qualities of radiating power, action-orientation etc just happen to be more rewarded in society today. Intrinsically they hold no higher value than… Read more »

Aries sun with a balsamic moon. Lately i get the sense that the sun is carrying a very tired olllld being saying something like
“Ok just a bit more, come on” and the moon is aware that the sun is just making it up as it goes along

Cap sun: Here’s the plan team: we go out and make it happen. Chip chop, time is of the essence, no dithering.

Taurus moon: Can’t I just radiate bovine magnetism and hope for the best?

Cap sun: It would be unwise to rely on that alone if we truly wish to achieve our desired outcome.

Taurus rising: But we’re looking particularly dewy at the moment.

Cap sun: Yes, however we keep nodding off and drooling on our admittedly rather fine décolletage.

Taurus moon: Pass the remote.

Taurus rising: Swap you for the Maltesers.

Cap sun: I’m outnumbered again. I’ll have to factor that into my recalibrated plan.

Taurus is a spectacularly hard worker though. Could Toro bits be motivated by the allure of More? More money, more comfort, more security, more sensual pleasure? Cap cuts a deal: if you work with me on X, this means that you get the new sofa / trip to Brazil / sexy jeans / pay rise ?

I am the laziest Cap/Taurus combo ever. I’m even an Ox, too, so something’s really amiss.

My sun and moon are in Pisces and my rising is Virgo. I feel that I am led by my Mercury and Mars in Aquarius. Those to planets would say to the sun and moon “As she thinks and fights she is”.

Scorpio Moon, Leo Sun. She takes precedence over him because everything he says is flamboyant transient, whereas her depth goes on and on. Besides, she’s a female and therefore, the beginning of everything. He’s all the parts in between.

The only upside is that when the Moon goes up in the sky at night, the Sun gets to play as long as he likes – my Leo side is pretty absent during the day but at night, watch out!

What a lovely chatty blog this is! my Aqua sun and Virgo moon are pretty hand in hand most of the time. Only source of conflict is housecleaning (anything-cleaning). I want it clean, but I’d rather be doing almost anything else. The solution is either extreme minimalism or a roomba. Or a robot! Actually that’s it. I just need to avoid sleeping on the floor (the url says it all: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2945576/Woman-attacked-sleeps-VACUUM-CLEANER-South-Korean-owner-cut-free-began-sucking-hair.html)

Any other fire signs with a Libra moon? I see a lot of us lunar Librans here but OMG it sometimes drives my Sag sun and Leo asc up the harmoniously painted accent wall. In recent years I have started to credit my moon with giving me a sensitive, artistic temperament and helping me pause long enough to appreciate a well-written sentence, design details, etc. But I feel like it makes my already exhuberant ways of expressing myself + hot temper extra high-strung and then I wonder if I come off as a prima donna. Libra moon and Aries sun here! It’s tricky… I think during my childhood and adolescence I almost solely channeled my moon. I needed to be the diplomat in my family, it never felt like a choice. I also hated how much I cared about others cared about me. I hated how seemingly placid and non-confrontational I was. I wanted to be firey! Passionate! Assertive! I wanted to be Griffindor, not a damn Hufflepuff! And yes, I feel you about the not wanting to seem hysterical part. But I think that’s because Libra moons hate confrontation, so any form of asserting… Read more »

I love that you’ve found a strategy that soothes both sun and moon for expressing emotions! I will have to mull over that. I also HATE drama but have also been the stubborn rebellious trailblazer type for much of my youth through early 20’s, so my moon just cringed at the inevitable wake of drama, most of which my sun liked to brush off and pretended didn’t exist. Now I realize how much of that chaos came out of childhood trauma (immigration, bullying, etc) which was so hard on my sensitive soul. Expressing emotions has pretty much always been a… Read more »

Also so much yes to the feeling naked after outbursts part! My social persona is mostly friendly yet reserved, not really sharing anything overly personal and just politely listening & commenting, but then every now and then, depending on the receptivity of my companion(s) — Libra moon sure knows how to read emotions in a room– suddenly the floodgates open and I’m saying wayyyyy more than I intend or even realize. It’s sooo cringe worthy when people are stunned by it coming out of nowhere and then they’re still carrying on a lighthearted conversation while I’m shaking inside, lol!

I have an unaspected Gemini Sun in the 10th house, with Mercury receiving a tight opposition from Saturn. I never related to descriptions of Gemini as a kid – & yet now I absolutely identify with it. I was a terribly lonely, bullied & intellectually ambitious child and when I read the descriptions of a Capricorn woman in Starsky & Cox’s Sextrology, that absolutely was me aged 7 – 18. The Gemini got set free when I went to university, could be open about my queerness/ bisexuality, dyed my hair every shade of the rainbow, and met a broad range… Read more »

I think Mutual Receptions, Stelliums, T-Squaring Focals and Stationary Planets also give wider orbs than otherwise would be the case. I have been guessed way more times as an Aqua, a Scorp or a Virgo because of these factors. DL’s thoughts on the Sun also apply.

The Sun is like the King in chess and Moon is like the Queen, she is much more seen / influential. I think the ‘life behind your eyes’ is ya Sun.

I have suspicion that if you have planets in signs and houses of the same polarity there is also a greater influence.

I’m reckon a 3 degree orb is plenty, That’s 6 degrees coming and going. In fact not sure if I like the whole orb thing. It’s like the cusp idea which we have debunked here many times. I work on exacts only and it has helped clear a lot up. Easy answer for me, and I was just thinking about this concept last night when I was reading my rising sign scopes and realized I read those more than my Sun sign scopes and find them more accurate/applicable. I live through my Pisces moon way more than my Aqua Sun. I forget I’m an Aquarius most of the time, and actually mostly live as my Crab rising, if I’m honest. Anyway, my moon many has more aspects to it, too, including trining my Crab rising. My Sun has much fewer aspects to it, so maybe that’s part of it, and… Read more »

I love this so much and fully agree (signed Pisces sun, Aquarius in Mercury trine Neptune).

Thanks so much, LaFemma! 🙂

I was thinking more about heavily aspected planets today and how my Moon is heavily aspected but, I think my *most* aspected planet is my Cap Venus, so maybe I live from that most of all..? I don’t know, I’ll have to look into this more, but I wonder if there is a MM post on heavily aspected planets?

Ooo that would be a good post!

Relate pretty much to everything you’ve said. I always find my Cap rising to be more accurate / applicable when reading scopes. Especially since my sun is in the Cap 10th house and progressed Sun is bang on my Cap Asc. I also live through my Saggo moon (it trines venus in 9th) and squares Uranus and it’s the most aspected in my chart. The Scorp sun is very quiet and rarely visible (perhaps cos it conjuncts Neptune?). It’s hard to vibe mysterious Scorp when Saggo moon takes over like a jack in the box. It’s so spontaneous it’s out… Read more »

Cast: Pisces sun, Aquarius moon. Setting: dank bar, the sort where your drink sticks to the table, 3am, obscure band from Berlin have just come on stage. Scene: Pisc and Aq trying to outweird each other with (embellished) stories of various (alien) encounters and (doomed romantic) escapades. Pisces keeps ordering more drinks. Gemini Asc joins the party bringing the goss, Pisc loves a good bitch and moan, Aq has everyone in stitches with their highbrow jokes. Pisc is giving sex eyes across the bar at everyone, Aq is aloof and distant. All secretly want to go home to bed but… Read more »

I love the Pisces – Aquarius thing and totally agree with the outweirding. My bf is an Aqua moon, and oh do we try to freak each other out, if our relationship is what you live every day boy do you have a fun time! 🙂

Sometimes I let myself get into weird situations just for the story it’ll give me for amazing/amusing people later. Exhausting!!

Ah! I love this, witchtails! I’m the reverse: Aqua Sun, Pisces Moon. The scene you’ve set resonates..

I live out of my Moon more than my Sun, I think.

Yeah I can’t always tell where my moon ends and my sun begins with me… I give too much of myself to other people like a Pisc but my Aq moon detests everyone for it ha.

My 12th house Jupiter-Neptune trine Pisces lives there, too! Or, you know, Sag, whooshes in to visit all the time, exits quickly through the sash window next to the bathroom and the bar stock room.

OK – so to get to that level of positive communication between Sun & Moon took about 25 yrs of trying to own my Leo-ness. Scene 1: In front of mirror: Conversation between teenage SunCrab and Leo Moon-MC-Mercury-Uranus-Mars-Venus-Vesta getting ready to go partying: Crab Sun: Jeezus, You don’t think the hair’s too big? Shouldn’t i tie it back? Leo Moon et al: No way – if you got it, flaunt it, baby. Crab: But everybody will stare – it’s HUGE. Leo: SO? I saw this hair style in Vogue – people pay MONEY for this crinkle frizz. Crab: But you… Read more »

Pisces sun (2nd house), Scorpio moon (10th house conjunct Saturn and Pluto), Cap rising. The big struggle is between wanting to treat everyone compassionately, to trust freely, and help all the time (Pisces) versus being a little more astute and questioning of motives and judgmental and only backing worthy people (Scorpio). Scorpio is more of the sting for sure, like cross me once and we’re done and I’ll never forget, Pisces forgives but eventually goes cold and runs away if treated badly over and over. Scorpio is more self-focused than Pisces, like I feel emotions strongly but as a Pisces… Read more »

In my day to day life I tend to lean on my Saggo moon. I especially know if I am dipping into lunar waters if I am assessing/judging a person, situation, idea or whatever else. When the going gets tough I definitely put on my Aries sun and walk the walk.

I think both my sun and moon are repressed and I vibe water like my Scorpio AC. My 9th house Leo sun is at the apex of an angular t-square and it’s hard to express it. My Sag moon (ruler of 9th) is conjunct Neptune and they are my only planets below the horizon, 2nd house. I love love love my Sag moon and actively channel it because the mutability makes me feel better in general. I’m also more of a small group and alone time person than a flashy Leo. When I get in a social mood or play… Read more »

You know, I know a *lot* of Leo suns who are uncomfortable in groups. They are people with presence and charisma, but not limelight seekers or large group people.

Libra Sun: Let’s meet up with some friends and have lovely drinks! Taurus Moon: I’m with you on the friends and drinks bit, but this sofa’s so comfy. Let’s have them here. Virgo Stellium: Not with this mess. Libra Sun: But friends! Drinks! Sag Mars: We own a vacuum. Just saying. Taurus Moon: The sofa is so soft. So nice. Looks great next to that walnut side table. Not gonna lie, it would look better with an elderflower old fashioned on that side table, but what can you do. Soft. Nice. [Attempts to burrow into sofa] Virgo Stellium: [drags self… Read more »

My sun is a peregrine sun – not totally sure what that means – but I do sometimes feel like it’s not connected in to the rest of me. In Gemini.

My moon is conjunct mars Chiron vesta in Taurus so I do feel more in tune when I tap into that. But my sun tends to scatter and distract those grounded aspects.

rachellion

I go for a balance of and consider both signs. I think of it as as Sun sign is more conscious side/ego needs and Moon sign is about unconscious/emotional needs. I am a Kataka Sun with Leo moon so, for example, I may get upset by not feeling “important” enough to someone who is important to me (leo) – this may result in an outward expression of moodiness/withdrawal (kat) and, if the issue is exacerbated, I may spiral into dramatics and start proverbially roaring (leo..duh 🙂 ). Also I want to feel in the center of things and praised/adored but… Read more »

I have this combo and I think you explained it very well. I never really relate to the nurture cooking homemaking side of Cancer. Though I do love my kids and I somewhat enjoy cooking I would rather have people tell me I’m brilliant–but quietly and on the side.

I so relate to the not feeling important enough and the spiral that ensues. So totally.

Like Virgonator, I credit my Sun with being the powerhouse, the completer – just keeping on doing whatever-it-is, till it’s done. It won’t let me quit mid stream – if I take it on, I’ll finish it. Gemini moon instigates, gets excited about new projects, new ideas, sparks new directions. And gets bored, impatient to finish off this one and get the next one underway. Moon (perhaps aided and abetted by the other personal planets) can resist – strongly – getting into that Virgo-completer mode which feels like a straitjacket. It is fine, even comforting when I am there, but… Read more »
