Ask Mystic: Saturn in Sagittarius and Spiritual Gaslighting

Filed in Ask Mystic

Mystic,

This is probably half question half rant, but as Saturn tours through his last segment of Sagittarius, the battle between truth and dogma has frothed its way to max bats in the US. I have noticed an upswing of astrologers denouncing hate and ignorance while in the next breath exemplifying the very thing they are decrying. There seems to be a very unsettling vibe of, “if you want to be vocal about injustice, you are part of the problem” by the privileged here, even in the spiritual community….Serenity above politics, definitely. Follow your bliss into authoritarianism is what the subtext feels like, though.

Online I have seen several conversation points about protesting and advocacy being low vibration and deluded. That the universe will work everything out in the end, so people just need to keep their outrage to themselves and wait it out. Having left and survived the mental labyrinth of an emotionally and mentally abusive relationship, the signs and similarities in language and behavior I’ve been seeing in some spiritual circles is dishearteningly similar.

What is the Saturn lesson, here? I don’t want to get stuck feeling incensed by people who have large platforms spreading ignorance, but it also doesn’t feel right to simply turn my back, ignore it and “do me.” Natally, I have Chiron on my Gemini AC opposite Saturn on my Sag DC… so a feeling of voicelessness and restriction has been a theme in my life.

Swamp specters have been slayed on the personal realm, but I think I naively thought that the battle was over. It feels as if I’ve turned around from victory for myself to only to have been met face to face with the larger machinations that make these emotionally and mentally abusive tactics so prevalent.

It’s places like your blog (oracle and tarot have been such a centering practice) that have been a refuge during this time. A reminder to continue to expand where information is coming from and keep seeking it out from as many places as possible, because the gems are out there. Thank you for that.

Astro advice? I know I’m not alone in this feeling, and as uncomfortable as I have been over the past year seeing the ghosts of my relationship take life in the behavior of others, I have also seen voices speak up and call out gas lighting tactics. It’s crazy-making, sometimes…

But still, I write today to see if there is something I am missing. Is Lilith’s transition into Sagittarius going to be the empowering rebel truth fighter force that continues the magic of this weekend’s solidarity marches? Or am I totally just projecting my own experience on everything?

Thank you for your time,
Lit Ramzilla

Dear Lit Ramzilla,

I concur with you that this last year of Saturn in Sagittarius (until 2044) is super intense in terms of beliefs and principles. Uranus in sync to it is speeding it up also.  I think Lilith joining Saturn in Sagittarius will augment those wanting to set their own stance and choose their level of engagement or activism. There is always a spectrum from 100% non-stop maintain-the-rage type involvement in movements to improve society or political dissent to 0 percent leave me the hell alone to meditate – the inner world is what matters most. You know?

And of course people vary wildly in their settings re all this. A motorway build over the back of your house or your local beach being poisoned is usually more likely to being people literally out into their streets to protest than something more active and further away. The pure volume of dysfunction and noise can also be over-whelming. And yes, some people are more vocal than others. I rarely venture forth with any online commenting about anything, partly as i do not have the time to get into online spats.

My personal, very Mars in Virgo style of action, is to try and spend my money ethically – it’s a quiet, non-showy discipline that irritates me more than it gives pleasure, frankly. And then i try to give appropriate feedback to the companies big enough to have a compliance or propaganda department that X (cruel treatment of animals, sweatshop labor, non-equality, ecological concerns) are of importance to me sufficient that i won’t buy their product.

But streets, placards, signs, vociferous performance protest are not personally me.  But i think what you are talking about sounds quite sinister. I recall an argument i once had with a then old friend of mine who had recently embraced a minor oriental religion – i can’t recall which one but it had a guru and involved a LOT of meditating – and he had an argument that poverty was just people’s karma and that, apart from giving a lot of $ to the cult/thing he was involved with, you just had to leave people be…It was probably put in a more sophisticated style than that but i found it infuriating. And i don’t trust people who claim to be the Karma Police.

So in a strange sort of a way, is it possible that the upstanding denizens of the New Age community that you are describing are akin to the moralizing Christians of the Victorian Era?  They would justify the most disgusting oppression of indigenous people or those from a class that they deemed lower as just “God’s Will.”

Or is it that they are setting their own comfort level on the activism spectrum and you are feeling non-aligned with those you had seen as a tribe? “Gas lighting” is a strong term – it is usually the domain of film noire is it not? Or of totally wretched relationship dynamics. It is when someone extremely manipulative causes someone else to doubt the validity of their own perceptions and thus even – eventually – their own sanity.

Is this what is happening or are you perhaps having – like many other people at the moment – having an awakening/consciousness raising experience that has rendered you out of step with your tribe?  I know that aspects of the current administration in certain countries – not just the USA – are making many of us recommit to fierce self-reliance a la the economy, feminism and/or environmental awareness.  Others have ’cause fatigue’ and are taking a more introvert path…for now.

My answer probably raises more questions than it answers but i think that this is a really interesting query and i would love to see what everyone else thinks.

Thoughts?*

I think I would be more activist if I had the inner experience I could hold allegiance to first. That I could be sure I wasn’t impulsed to a violent attitude that was actually a projection of my personal fear and rage If we could recreate the Elysium where the people took a psychedelic to meet their energetic destiny, ancestors and know life didn’t end here – then passionate activism might have a healthful impulse, natural organisation and expression. Eg read something regarding the idea that the Spirit of the Vine is organising activism! “Ayahuasca may already be joining people… Read more »

Great post. I wanted to comment immediately but I wanted to find the link to THIS: https://medium.com/@yonatanzunger/hope-fear-and-exhaustion-in-a-changing-world-4d05d2d8cfaa#.o42db6pal

We didn’t win the war by meditating, it’s true. Because no age has ever just stopped being self serving and taken basic care of children, the disabled, protected the earth and stayed simple as a matter of course. Ever. The truly historic thing would be if the world collectively just looked at how this is the same shit different millenia. As much as the whole insane asylum had to be broadcast for it to be “oh I can’t just look away anymore” is one thing, but when I can remain even a little calm in my own situation within this… Read more »

Had another thought re: oxygen masks. When they tell you in case of emergency to put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others this is v. important.

However I don’t think you should forget that the plane is on fire once you put your oxygen mask on!!

You want to meditate & practice yoga to centre yourself spiritually? go ahead, fantastic. You want to be an activist & take a stance against human trafficking? Absolutely fantastic – do it! One action does not rule out the other. They compliment each other. Being spiritual does not mean to just sit back & meditate your life away while the world falls apart around you – pretending you’re not part of it – or even sadder, pretending you’re above it – being spiritual is about being in the service of humankind in whatever capacity you judge is the best. It’s worth remember that 99.99% of the new age teachers are not particularly far along. A good deal are simply shysters making money from people’s emotional issues.
A true teacher won’t tell you some airy platitude designed to push you back into somnolence.
A true teacher will tell you the truth, which can be hard for over-inflated egos to take.

Great post.

I don’t have time to read everyone’s comments right now as am busy af these days. But want to add my two cents.

I think all the witches are gearing up for war. I’m about to grab my cloud-pine broom myself.

Here’s a post from Sarah Lawless FULL of amazing links at the bottom. I just got Blood of the Earth: An Essay on Magic and Peak Oil in the mail yesterday.

I love this post, the question by Lit Ramzilla and the answer by MM. I feel the pokes and nudges like most people when it comes to private/public topics. Everyone has a voice and a life they’re experiencing and want to express their view. I’m more like MM, interesting that it’s a Mars in Virgo reference as I relate too spending money ethically as a way to express my views. Australia didn’t have much to say at all on this because we don’t have a strong climate change policy. As well as VW settling on $17.5b to resolve the issues. The problem is the company conspired for a decade and secretly installed software that made the car appear cleaner in the emission tests. Saturn is the priest, after all, and his transit through Sagittarius (religions, belief systems) I think transmutes as the sort of archetypal abusive priest in reaction formation. Not to mention the fact that Saturn (restriction, boundaries) was square Neptune (lies, delusions, drugs). I feel that energy sort of festers, and in that sense I could see the Hellfire and Brimstone pastor revealing himself through several spiritual leaders. Neptune is like the light and love brigade, blinding people by a promised salvation, but Neptunian people have such few boundaries, leaving them open to attack by Qi vampires amock. Saturn being restriction… Read more »

It’s a test and I’ve seen a few generations of individuals show their colours verbally where they would not dare before. They may not, probably will not protest, but they will spend their ever dwindling money and use their presence/absence to make a stand. I personally love these people, in a detached but heartfelt way (Venus Aqua 3rd trine Uranus Libra 11th) and hear or feel it from them.

About G-d’s will, the approach to this in Judaism is that G-d gave each one of us free will. Yes the Lord knows what will happen and how because He is all knowing, but in a paradoxical way; he gave us free will so we can chose to be good human beings or not.
About this Saturn in Sagittarius in my 7th house in equal house and 6th in placidus, I found myself wanting to be an ultra orthodox Jew. Very fitting lol.. I am myself a Sag by the way

davidlMM Member

Free will was Lucifers schtick not Hashems. Then came the fall of his followers to this place which lead to a corruption and dominance of the indigenous races. This is his world. You can tell right ?
The best advice I ever got was to renounce my ‘free will’ and allow the spirit to move me. There is no paradox or duality, just acceptance and surrender to a more intelligent and compassionate force.

I suspect, and i could be wrong, that a lot of people have gone into survival mode. Some have gone feral and are just going to cocoon it out until the next presidency. More mainstreamers have done some version of Mystic’s suggestion of pick your battles. Because let’s be honest, you won’t win them all and is it worth stagnating your qi over it? The best take I ever read on this was Alain de Botton, in Status Anxiety. He argues that the whole “self help” industry – ie. change yourself and you change your world – and many so called enlightened philosophies that say meditate it out/change yourself are kind of aligned, in that they ultimately tell people that the solution is personal, not systemic. ….as if everyone can make a living doing what they love, let alone make a living at all in an era when some ridiculous % of jobs will be done by robots within 20 years, all to increase… Read more »

PS – the “struggle” if the struggle is maintaining healthy borders for yourself – that never ends. Consider it a game, not a sign something is wrong. You will get better and better at it even if you already know how to play. If that makes sense. 🙂

^^^^ yes yess 1000 times yes. I was just thinking how all of these (white older men and/or women) kept saying the week after the US election that nothing would actually change. Then the travel ban and now this spike in ICE arrests and deportations are tearing minority families apart.

To be honest, for those of us who happen to be from multicultural backgrounds, this “gaslighting” has been going on way before the election.

They might not have known. They believed in their literature of experience and the intellectual dominance of that.

They dont have our experience. And are about to realise we have the lanfuage of intellectual experience as well. Thank you for the education. We’ll keep passing it on.

“The language of their academic experience”

But you can say paradigm.

No resentment. Gratitude. And moving on ahead with it.

The only person who ignore other human suffering is someone who not only tolerates but approves of it. No spiritual being is ok with human trafficking ever.
I’ve run into my share of self proclaimed gurus and they were self centered trying to drain their followers bank accounts and groom them into sexual abuse by claiming “free love.” free love my ass.

Yes to rebellion, speaking truth to power, and making others aware of ‘inconvenient truths’. Bless you Michael Moore, Bernie Sanders, Scott Ludlam, and other voices of reason in this crazy world we find ourselves in. Resistance is never pointless, IMO

I know what you mean, lit ramzilla — After the US election I went to yoga class — and I needed it that week – but found myself getting annoyed at some of the teachers “peace out it will be all right” messages (although one of them who said that that weekend, read us to give me your tired your poor your innocent speech in the weekend of the travel ban protests which was a nice vibe of solidarity). Laurie Penny had a great essay related to this — “Life Hacks of the Poor and Aimless” — about the question… Read more »

We are in for a long battle, so self care is indeed essential. It’s all a balancing act. Prepare for the long battle.

“protesting and advocacy being low vibration and deluded” No, that is privilege speaking. Not wanting to make a fuss, we’re ok so everyone experiencing hate, injustice, should just suck it up and stop bringing us down. “100% non-stop maintain-the-rage type involvement in movements to improve society or political dissent to 0 percent leave me the hell alone to meditate – the inner world is what matters most” This is an example of black and white thinking. Everyone needs to contribute to whatever level they can, whether it is meditating and being kind to your neighbours, volunteering, leading by example, or… Read more »

agreed.
Find your cause/your calling and defend what matters to you most. If you don’t or won’t who will?
Life is a balancing act.

Your 2 cents GY is worth waaay more than that 🙂 I could hear Myst’s Libran Moon pour forth in a superbly balanced way echoing my sentiments. I am for looking after my universe that ends at my fingers and toes and keeping my surrounds as beautiful and peaceful as i can. It takes constant attention. That is where my energy is going at the moment: into me for the first time in 15 years and keeping myself connected to the earth and sky. That’s how i’m doing my Mars in Virgo, planting. As for activism, once wore a TRICKY DICK… Read more »

Yes if you want to go flame the hierarchy dont light the fire yourself. Vibe unshakeable, confident and serene first. That is what is done by the heirarchy, and then they attack by personal undermining means. Get your vibe right first. Leave no room for attack. Centre all ops. Do it first in your world and manner. Prove yourself willing to really learn, listen, absorb and integrate useful info. Then go in, smile and if you truly have to, fq hard but from quiet rationality, endless preparation of the system and a hint of bloody refusal if you must, always… Read more »

You’ve been reading Sun Tzu? Funny it sounds like I’m in a similar workplace situ. New manager came in 4 months ago and has pissed off nearly everyone with her micro managing, ignorance, self promotion, lack of respect and condescending manner, and plain stupidity. I’ve been talking to management I have good relationships behind the scenes — I think she should be sacked (actually she’s on probation, so just not hired permanently). She’s made a lot of enemies, and made a really stupid racist remark in open plan office that caused them to give her a warning. Her performance review… Read more »

Also, I spoke to her about her micro-managing me, blocking me from doing my job, talking condescendingly etc. and she listed to it but hasn’t changed her MO at all. She’s one of those people who’s always right, and doesn’t even really listen to other people’s opinions, just craps on about herself and how great she is.

Too funny! No I haven’t been reading Sun Tzu, i think it’s just that Mars in Cap quiet structured climb, which is very weird for a Piscean/Sagittarian type, but augmented by a frustrating Saturn in Taurus 6th that pays off. Plus, yes the Sagg/Piscean, so i guess i have networked. Not on purpose, i hate that term. Just because people are amazing, or if not then still fascinating. You called her out. She showed you who she is. Give her some ROPE, baby. Must’ve learned that from a sailor 🙂 And if my advice in this barely understood (by me)… Read more »

Yes, agree. I was all gung ho that ‘we have to get rid of her’ and emotional — because she makes me angry — but I’ve realised I need to be super professional and appear to be diplomatic — and actually a lot of heat has gone now that I have an escape plan. It will be interesting to see what happens.
