The Astrology Of Asteroid Icarus

Marcus Schenkenberg as Icarus

Icarus complex…symptoms particularly in mania where a person is fond of heights, fascinated by both fire and water, narcissistic and observed with fantastical or far-fetched imaginary cognition.

What does the astrology of asteroid Icarus actually mean?

Icarus is apparently a psychological complex and of course, he is a character in mythology. The boy whose inventor father fashions him a pair of wings so that they may both escape from Crete – think minotaur, mad king, the queen who had sex with a bull etc etc – but Icarus ignores his fathers warnings to fly a middle path, goes too close to the Sun and his wings melt.

The author Seth Godin wrote a funky little book called The Icarus Deception, basically saying that this myth was like propaganda for slaves and those who would defy the established order.   Actually, i never fully trusted Daedelus – he had form with jealousy of younger men, having taken out his own nephew.

Anyway, Icarus is also an asteroid – number 1566 if you want to throw it into your chart via the extended chart options on Astrodienst.   So do you experience it as where you’re nuts, driven by hubris and likely to fly too close to ‘the Sun’?

Or, is it operating for you more like how my friend Kim Falconer describes the influence of asteroid Icarus: “Freedom, expansion, liberation, an attempt to escape intolerable situations, vivid inspiration.”?

Icarus is about to join the Sun + Venus in the turbulent waters of Cancer/Kataka.

Thoughts?

Ohohoh, 7th house along but not tightly aspected with my sun and mercury, it is trine chiron though. This explains a lot, not very big on traditional marriage or gender ideas 🙂

Late to this post . . . and generally don’t put much stock in asteroids . . . but I just put this one in and Icarus is conjunct my sun. Which is resonant.

Talk about the Icarus myth also makes me think of Jack Gilbert’s poem, “Failing and Flying”:

“Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew.
It’s the same when love comes to an end,
or the marriage fails and people say
they knew it was a mistake, that everybody
said it would never work. That she was
old enough to know better. But anything
worth doing is worth doing badly. . . ”

For me Icarus is exact conjunct Uranus in 6H Sag. Definitely freedom, expansion, reaching unique heights.

weird! I had thought this was a nothing in my chart, and yet looking it up just now, it is actually somewhat close to both my natal Jupiter, late Gem in the 12th, and Chiron, early Kataka, also in the 12th–and thus also I’m about to have a transiting Icarus on my natal Icarus.

A mentor of mine, Mark Lewis, pro storyteller and sometimes Santa Klaus (somewhat famously in the tv show “Grimm”)–recently passed–told the story beautifully–here’s a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VEEsRc2UIQ

How do I find out where Icarus is in my chart?

Fantastic story about Snetsinger! Thank you Jupiter! She now goes on my list of inspiring rockstars.
Though i cant quite understand how the visceral thrill she got seeing a little birdy was enough to transcend her maladventure rape scenario, i very much appreciate her commitment to her own obsessions, and her ability to shake off adversity.

Yes, just one: “Without a net” is the gut read I get from this energy, FWIW – Icarus has to be the ultimate high-wire act, IMO.

12 degrees Sagittarius putting it in with the Mercury-Neptune conjunction. Certainly makes the psychic hot spot more interesting and something to contemplate a little deeper. This means my 1 degree Cancer Saturn is going to have Venus pass over on the day of the exact square of tr Saturn and Neptune. Last square was the start of the big shit fight with the Libran (ex) Lover. Kim mentioned that Saturn probably played a part in protecting my younger self who would have been quite vulnerable from the Mercury-Neptune conjunction. Of analysing and making sense of things that I probably didn’t… Read more »

Thanks for the link – man, that is one hell of a radically obsessed birder! I’m in love with birds, too. One of the reasons i go to my mountain shack is to be among the birdlife up there. I’ve befriended several birds including a pair of golden eagles and a pack of griffon vultures – meaning that they ignore or tolerate my presence rather than fly off when i get near, lol. And yes, absolutely obsessed with flying too – i used to go gliding – instant transcendence. Once i was gliding upside-down on a current & looked down… Read more »

In my 12th, at 19″ Scorpio close to two of my Liliths at 22″ and 23″ Scorpio
Yeah that feels totally right.
I’m so feeling Mars at 23″ Scorpio right now and the full moon coming
Getting cuddly with Insomnia instead of kicking him out of the bed and fighting.
Am I nuts or is Icarus sexy?
Maybe he’s just being devoured by my Lilith corridor in the 12th with Mars retro on him right now. Poor guy!
I loved Seth’s book mentioned above.
That tall poppy syndrome point about hubris really stuck a chord with me.
And not just because it’s my favourite character flaw.

Second house Sagg conjunct Moon & Neptune. Oversensitivity and a propensity to daydream hard. Can get carried away emotionally.

I could really pick this one apart, especially with that Estes article cosmic fleece posted above. There are so many layers to this and it’s on my closest conjunction. I really have to keep myself on that middle path as much as I can.

Is the exact conjunct so, in regards to the asteroid placement, because the influence of an asteroid is so narrow in content / focus? I imagine there’d be some influence for squares/opps and trines at a narrow orbs as well?

aquasunrise

If you ask me, yes its all exact to 1 degree off, so about 19 degrees of aquarius… it should make me an entertaining rebel, (in the house of 6th matters) perhaps…or a very predictable case of contrariness. I think if the asteroids are in exact aspects then there is potency to that; so for me now in the context of the 8th house aries north node, part of fortune, with also eris, uranus just transiting past… I think people just instinctively know what resonates; Invicta realises so, I get this too. Except so much of uranus is in this… Read more »

The asteroids add to the narrative of our sense of purpose, identity to living, being…

But even if I did not know anything somewhere within my psyche it would “be”, and I would “know” what is irrefutable.

While I despise ‘Mickey-fication’ for the most part, I admit I thought first of the Disney version of Icarus, from the cheap and cheerful HERCULES: THE ANIMATED SERIES (aired on the Disney Channel on Saturday mornings). He’s written as the eternally hopeless admirer of Cassandra (yes, the very same seer) and a manic sidekick to Herc, and somehow it works. The version of Icarus on this show is endearing and a total nutter, explained as a side-effect of actually surviving his legendary flight close to the Sun. He is reckless, passionate, impulsive and loud; but very neurotic and possessing absolutely… Read more »

Been listening to the story of Icarus told by the esteemed Clarissa Pinkola Estes (From the Mother Night series, and author of Women who run with the wolves). It seems we all know the over acultured version of this story. Where the true meaning behind the story is how Parents/ Elders do not stay on to give guidance to our children after we have given instruction. Daedelus tells Icarus ”Do not fly to close to the sun, do not fly to close to the water” and pretty much takes off, or as CPE says ”He leaves him in his mind… Read more »

Thanks Cosmic, I like this interpretation. There is an interesting explanation in the Hebrew texts of the longevity of certain characters in ancient times. The original teachers and progenitors of the Hebrew philosophy were said to have lived up to around 800 years. Why ? Because important knowledge took that long to truly understand and impart properly.
Like deep foundations that hold up a building for thousands of years. A fire brand that is burned deep enough to be retained for generations.

Trying hard to put a positive spin to my Icarus in 12th H/Libra conjunct the NN & yep – sq Sun. Really i am. I mean i could go the lovely New Age route of him soaring (diving?) into the realm of the unseen to help me retrieve buried spiritual treasure from my unconscious & free me from past nefarious karmic ties & enslavement and all that but i can’t. Hey again KT. I think the 12th House must be cool – all the best people i know are 12th housers. But like you, i got a Neptune (Scorp) sq Moon going on which at times slips into a bit of Russian realism – esp if la Luna hits on my Neptune as it was when i scribed the above.
Also just realised Icarus & co. are in the Via Combusta, tsk-tsk – so he’s getting his fix after all.

7th house, hmmm, that’s interesting. My seventh house is Capricorn with Saturn in there so as you can imagine I can be a bit serious, always the one looking at practicalities etc. the other side of that is that I’ve always been attracted to women who are quite the opposite. Like my wife who is always gliding above the clouds. It works well. For me it’s been about learning to fly a kite. Zero Aries in the 6th. Yup, see the Icarus influence like whoa. I worked a job with traditional hours (9-5) and workdays once and it started to do something to me, I felt like I was going mad. (I’m fine with working “weird” shifts, currently am self-employed and work remotely which suits me). I was blaming that on my sixth house placements of Sun, retro Mercury (both squared by Mars/Ur) and Venus, now I know better. 😉

seawitchmermaid, I also have Icarus in the 6th, conjunct Neptune in Cap. Traditional 9-5 jobs “do something” to me too :). I love being self-employed and remote! I can be a bit delusional about the risks involved in unsteady freelance work — a more security-oriented person would not want the uncertainty of waiting for checks to arrive — but the freedom is worth it to me. I want to make my creative work (Neptune) my focus, so Icarus may help me fly.

seawitchmermaidMM Member

I love that, “maybe Icarus can help me fly.” What I do now isn’t really creative (but I still enjoy it as it satisfies Virgo-esque tendencies lol), but I am working on a couple side projects I hope to make profitable, one of which is completely creative work.

Yes, same placement but 10th house. I’ve worked in my own business as a sole trader for over 30 years. In that business I work with others but only a few hours at a time. My main selling proposition is that I have fresh eyes on a problem that the 9 to 5 ers are missing. Success for me is not transforming business’s , it’s removing the drudgery and giving them back time.
