Way To Work A Saturn Transit

If you were taking some time this week to sit down and try to figure out what award-winning author Margaret Atwood‘s next project would be, your first guess probably wouldn’t have been a series of all-ages graphic novels about a superhero who is part-bird, part-cat, and suffers an identity crisis because of his conflicting predator/prey nature.

“I have concocted a superhero who is part cat, part bird. Due to some spilled genetic Super-Splicer, our hero got tangled up with both a cat and an owl; hence his fur and feathers, and his identity problems,” said Atwood.

“What should you expect from Angel Catbird? Imagine, if you will, a strange mix of Will Eisner’s The Spirit, Grant Morrison and Chas Truog’s Animal Man, and Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s Squirrel Girl,” said acquiring editor Daniel Chabon. “Angel Catbird is a humorous, action-driven, pulp-inspired story. And the only other thing I can tell you at this early date is to expect a lot of cat puns.”

So this is absolutely brilliant.  Way to work a Saturn transit, right?
Margaret Atwood, a celebrated novelist, thought leader and Scorpio, is always the example i point people freaked about having Mercury Retrograde to. More great writers have it than not.
Anyway, Ms Atwood is closer to her Uranus Return (that you have at age 84) than she is to her 2nd Saturn Return and she has spent the last year having heavy Saturn transits.
For the last year, Saturn has been on her Scorpio Sun, square Mars and Moon in Aquarius, then opposite her Gemini Ascendant and Square Lilith in Pisces. It’s zooming straight for her Mercury Retro in Sagittarius as i type this.
Some people, arguably more so if you are at a certain age, would just be zonked out and dispirited by such a bonanza of Saturn crap. But no, she has dug deep and emerged with a genuinely ground-breaking collaborative graphic novel project.
It is in collaboration with the artist Johnnie Christmas.
So i don’t know his sign but he has sci-fi horror series called Pisces.

  1. I worked for a while in the surfing industry, it was when surf culture and surf wear started to cross over to the general public. I met a guy who turned his back shed board shorts hobby into a multi million $ biz. selling surf shorts and tops to people all over the world. Creating ‘cool’ is a tricky job but his secret was simple. Go and talk to 14 year olds. Find out what they think is cool, what they wear, who they watch etc. They are the trendsetters. Then introduce those ideas to 25-40 year olds and they will lap it up at a premium price. My point !
14 year olds are absolutely crazy on super heros. Marvel and DC the originators of many of these characters are now billion $ companies that own the most successful movie, publishing, toy, merchandising franchises in the world.
Margaret Atwood is one of my favourite authors and I’m looking forward to her take on all this. Reading the blurb though made me feel that she might be sort of riding the wave. The damaged superhero etc.. But no doubt there is a lot of money to be made introducing this concept to an older generation. And I’m hoping she surprises me with an angle that is unique.

    • Ah, davidl… such cynicism! My two cents… I find it difficult to imagine that Ms. Atwood would be all that interested in the commercial aspects of comic book creation, given that she has always walked her own path, been independent, rebellious and somewhat provocative, and the fact that this comic is being published in association with “conservation organization Nature Canada and their Keep Cats Safe and Save Bird Lives initiatives.” Also, I doubt in the end this is going to make much money… it’s a 3 book series published by an indie publisher.

But you might be right about trying to reach 14-year-olds though. Without actually knowing the content of Angel Catbird, I would guess that it’s Atwood’s intention to explore a literary form (ie: the graphic novels) that she personally finds interesting, innovative and one that is becoming increasingly more sophisticated, but to also communicate her environmental advocacy to a new, younger audience. That would seem to me to be totally in keeping with her Gem rising and Pisces Lilith and resonates with her Saturn transits too.

I think it’s marvelous and an absolute inspiration to me as to how to operate on under my own Saturn transits (Saturn is barreling towards my Mercury too! I am in hard core prep mode)

    • I don’t know if the old surf brand ‘Hot Tuna’ started out in a back shed but your comment reminded me of when I was 14, Hot Tuna surfwear was part of our school uniform on the Mid North Coast. We thought it was very cool! Loved that piranha 🙂

      • I better not say who, they are mega now, but it wasn’t Hot Tuna. Though I loved hot tuna boardies. A road trip up the coast always entailed buying HT boardies. The whole look and feel was ‘street’, they were the first to use blacks, greys.. Never wore them in the surf though they were too heavy. Definitely the coolest après surf wear at the time.

        • As you know l dont get into clothes fashion but l always liked the name “Hot Buttered”. I understand that name well. l dont eat toast unless buttered within 5 secs or in da bin it goes. (Mars/Venus cjunct in Virgo)

  2. Oops – I read that as Angel Catbiro on the cartoon. A slight letdown to get to the text and find it is Catbird. Catbiro was really calling to me…

      • I was clearly having a moment. Mars is squaring my natal Mercury today and Mercury is sextiling Uranus. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it *runs off to invent new cartoon character Catbiro* (he pens stories whilst perching on the back of my broomstick).

  3. When I asked my son to describe what I was like as a parent he said, without pause, half owl, half cat 🙂 I was chuffed!
I’m Scorp rising- so I think it’s a true reflection of our nature.

    • The sciatic nerve is believed by the Hebrews to be the residence of the spirit. It is referred to as the holy nerve. Kosher laws forbid the eating of the sciatic nerve of animals. So pain here can be a message of spiritual malaise or the opposite, spiritual breakthrough.
Finding the source of this ‘message’ and resolving it may relieve the pain.
Have a look at the story of Jacobs ladder. He climbed the ladder in intense sciatic pain.

    • I am convinced that Saturn is all about spinal alignment and all that supports correct postural alignment.
I’ve had intense neck pain for many weeks and the usual remedy of chiropractic adjustments is not helping, actually having more pain or the return of symptoms. So I embarking on a new endeavour of alignment from the toes up, instead of neck now.
I hope you have a great acupuncture session 12HV.

            • Howsya been?

I rolled my Kombi 4 weeks ago. nuthn happenend to me; not a scratch, break or twinge. My daily driver one. Still got my other one nearing completion. But I gotta 405 Turbo Diesel as second car. I think it was my Mars Uranus gift. I sold my bike last year; ugh!

  4. Damaged flawed superhero trend the new and improved vampire trend?
I share Mercury in Retrograde natal, it often leaves me tongue tied and speaking backwards. A curse and a blessing.
I love her previous works will check this out next.

    • Absolutely. She’s the zeitgeist. Never the follower. Creates her own ways of being defined. Writers the stories she wants to write.

And Black Horse is a giant in comics – they’re not DC or Marvel, but they are their own brilliant tour de force that allows artists and writers to explore the narratives they want.

  5. I discovered Margaret Atwood a bit late, only reading The Handmaid’s Tale last year. Her writing resonated with me so much that I have read everything I could get my hands on since then. I never thought to look up her natal chart and then this post revealed that she shares my Scorpio Sun/Aqua Moon/Gemini Asc. That’s exciting to me and gives me hope for a positive outcome for this seemingly never-ending Saturn transit.

    • I loved The Handmaids Tale – in the way you can love something dark and disturbing that keeps you awake at night and makes you look at the world anew and just see how fragile your reality its. I’ve read it three times since then. Was pivotal in my evolution as a writer.

The Blind Assassin was my favourite though. It was a borrowed book and I’ve never been able to replace it (I need to try and fix that) so I can read it again. I adore non-linear narratives and it was one of the first books I read that did not follow the strict start here and end here novel format.
