The Incrementalists

The Incrementalists—a secret society of two hundred people with an unbroken lineage reaching back forty thousand years. They cheat death, share lives and memories, and communicate with one another across nations, races, and time. They have an epic history, an almost magical memory, and a very modest mission: to make the world better, just a little bit at a time. Their ongoing argument about how to do this is older than most of their individual memories.

Phil, whose personality has stayed stable through more incarnations than anyone else’s, has loved Celeste—and argued with her—for most of the last four hundred years. But now Celeste, recently dead, embittered, and very unstable, has changed the rules—not incrementally, and not for the better. Now the heart of the group must gather in Las Vegas to save the Incrementalists, and maybe the world.

HOW could I not have heard of this author before?  Steven Brust is Sagittarius – he moved to Las Vegas to work so that he could “get away from temptation.”  That’s SO Sagg.

The co-author, Skyler White is a “word witch” but with no birth data i could find.   She writes “choose your own story path” erotic paranormal fiction in “collaboration with readers” with plots like this:

Astra, a trapeze artist in an illegal interstellar circus, falls for a powerful renegade magician, and the attraction between them is strong enough to draw the ruling coven, the painful past, and the fury of space down upon them.

So she’s Pisces, right?

WOW. Are any of you peeps familiar with either of these authors?  Thoughts?

I bought this book- it’s got a great premise but it’s false advertising. Mid-way though, way monotonous and confusing with lots of word witchery. Better luck next time kids.

Darn! Pity. I am always unsure of a dual author scenario unless it is non-fiction.

It’s like a book about *us*, PIABs! Epic 😀

Crazy coincidence re White the Author & White the Wife (ie Breaking Bad). I’m loving White the Author! The other White (definitely not a Pisces) drove me Bats.

lets give her both pluto & uranus in libra, neptune in scorp for basic generational backdrop. then, Virgo rising would give her a nice 10H Gemini Sun (for Saturn effect), Jupiter in Leo in the 12th (repressed & for law-related confinement). Venus in Cancer (11th house, she hung out with family).

Sounds good! If well written, I’m in.

I’ve read Brust. He’s a masterful stylist who can switch from quasi-noir to pseudo-Dumas from one book to the next. The Incrementalists is definitely on my to-read list.

Excuse me while I get my amazon account up..

Incidentally I love the name Celeste. I have never had the inclination to name any pets Celeste though. It’s very Priestess in the Tarot.

When I was reading Steve’s stuff he was in Minneapolis. His early stuff is eastern European flavoured, especially the books about Vlad Taltos. 🙂 Can’t speak for his newer stuff.

I find the “shut up and take my money” is having an effect… I mean if that guy buys it so easily, it must be good?

I haven’t heard of these but the first one sounds familiar, reminds me of The BoneClocks by David Mitchell, involving Horologists who live on through the ages continuously through other bodies. The life of the protagonist is “repeatedly intersected by a slow-motion war between a cult of predatory soul-decanters and a band of vigilantes”. Epic novel.
