The Twin Peaks Reboot

Filed in Uncategorized

Twin Peaks

For some of us, Twin Peaks WAS the 90s. Or it began them at least. It was also the d.n.a of a more surreal – less cheesy and 80s – approach to television. It foundationed for more original television in general.

Multiple Capricorn David Lynch, a highly Neptune-influenced surrealist fresh off the success of the indie Blue Velvet, spooked up the small screen with an explosion of weird that was completely ON SYNCH at the time.

Twin Peaks the first was launched with the signature astro of the late 80s and early 90s – Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn. It was Saturn on David Lynch’s Sun and Pluto on his Ascendant in Scorpio. That is so rare – ruler of his Sun ON the Sun and ruler of his Ascendant ON the Ascendant.

He was breaking up with the highly Uranian Isabella Rossellini (star of the haunting Blue Velvet) and he got to pioneer surrealism on television, a Luis Bunuel dream writ large. Nobody had done surrealism on television at all – it was all more or less game shows, shellac hair newsreaders, BBC costume drama, Miami Vice and pundits.

Voila it worked. Didn’t it?  it made weirdness mainstream and Lynch a household name. Saturn does that. Pluto blew him open and Saturn turned it pro.

Twin Peaks launched on April 8 1990 with a Lilith-Pluto conjunction in Scorpio and fittingly, Twin Peaks is a small logging town where everyone has a double life, a secret, a clandestine agenda etc. No basement is unpopulated by demons or ghosts. It’s like Jung and Freud are the plumbers there.

So now the Twin Peaks reboot – apparently picking up the story in contemporary times – is to be (again) done by David Lynch, now with Saturn on his Lilith and (the perfect transit for an audacious reboot/career morph) Jupiter nearing his Midheaven and Pluto ON his Mercury. Pluto is also on the Neptune from April 1990.

So i don’t know if i could go back to Twin Peaks, even a reboot, but the astrology is so insanely apt. Thoughts?

They consulted an astrologer to make up all the birthdates of the characters. It’s wild. There’s like over 50 characters so that poor astrologer probably spent a long time flipping through his/her ephemeris and running transits/progressions/solar arcs etc to charts of possible birth dates for all characters. If that astrologer can come up with the best birthdays for the characters then I should be able to find the “best” or most compatible birthday to mine and look for a guy born that day lol.

Of all the clickbait “which character from… Are you?” quizzes I filled out, getting “you are Audrey horne”made me the most proud. Fuzzy sweaters. Cherry stems.
After all these years.

I’m thinking of ” Tough Guys Don’t Dance ” a vastly underrated movie, I wonder how it stands up to the test of time .

I saw Lynch give a talk earlier this year in Brisbane. He is pretty amazing and I love his creative process. So simple! Just follow the idea, no matter what the expression. No wonder he’s such a force. Twin Peaks came at a time in my life where I was leaving home and experiencing the big dangerous world by myself for the first time. It was the perfect accompaniment. I am soooo excited that it’s coming back. And the soundtrack is amazing (used to have it on cassette!).

Very cool post! Btw, is anyone here following The Returned (Les Revenants)? It’s an astonishing, and very Twin Peaks influenced, French supernatural drama about grief and love, with a super spooky and beautiful Mogwai soundtrack. Second season supposed to come out this autumn . . . .

I saw Eraserhead at the Lumiere when I was fifteen. I freaked out, it did something to my brain and I haven’t been able to Lynch it since. So weird.

Twin Peaks was always the topic du jour at playgroup mornings. So long ago, now all our babies are in their mid twenties.

I was working in a comic shop prior to tv show starting up in Oz…We were all like ”Why did we get a shit load of this booked called ”Laura Palmers Diary ?” What the ?? And then it hit … I am still spooked by the footage of the ceiling fan spinning in the hall when Laura is retracing her steps, to her bedroom … To see Bob at the end of the bed … Petrifying !! I’d watch it on the lap top …. Prolly not at night before bed though …. Speaking of shows, i had to… Read more »

B.O.B.

Beware. Of. Bob.

He used to scare the ISH out of me. But the finale…with Cooper in the mirror? Fucked me OVER.

I love Lynch. Exploring the dark side of the seemingly sweet – Mulholland Drive is PERFECTION in how it captures the duality of Los Angeles.

Bob scared the crap out of me! I STILL get the heebies if I think of him. Actually that guy Frank in Blue Velvet also freak me out, Dennis Hopper played him and my father is a dead ringer for DH, when he was alive obvs! But Yeah DL’s stuff is so surreal its almost TOO good. It zaps right through my semi permeable psychic skin. Must be the 12th House Neptune and Moon. I’ve always been totally freaked out by anything in the creepy genre that involved mirrors and was just a bit too close to home. That said,… Read more »

God, I adore Frank Boothe. Dennis Hopper – prototypical Taurean Maverick. Why folks think we’re staid I have no clue.

So disappointed I missed the David Lynch exhibit interstate – I bought the catalogue and a shirt, though. I DID see Francis Bacon at the Art Gallery of NSW after a TRAUMATIC day and it TOTALLY exorcised my bad feelings, lol.

Twin Peaks was so totally groundbreaking for its time but I really think it stands up for current viewing – Mystic I encourage a rewatch! Also interestingly, it was Disney CEO Bob Iger, who was working at ABC at the time, who basically insisted that the totally disinterested ABC Network board pick it up the series.

My birthday on April 7th was shared with anticipation of Twin Peaks. At that time my pal and I had not merely burned the bridges behind us but entered them already on fire. We felt the new portal opening and Lynch was the guide. Twin Peaks was a world that reached out and took us in. There was internet then, 1200 baud modems connecting to local BBS’ and some info could be had. It was nothing like today. Mostly we counted on local TV newspaper columnists to share what everybody was saying. They were kind enough to post where meet-ups… Read more »

I ADORE Twin Peaks! Everything about it…the clothes, the beauties who were not your typical “LA types”, the weird stuff with dreams and symbolism…I’ve rewatched it so many times. Usually I have to stop by a few eps into season 2 because it went so off the rails. I hope David Lynch is able to reclaim the brilliance of season 1. It’s funny tho…anytime I’ve tried to introduce the show to a generation younger than me (Gen Y or millennial), they are totally like “meh.” They don’t really get what is so innovative about it. With all the weird stuff… Read more »

Last I heard, Lynch decided to back out because they were not willing to provide enough funding for him to sufficiently create his vision.

I am glad to hear things are back on track.

oh YAAAAAAYYYYY he’s directing it again?!!?? 🙂 🙂 🙂 twin peaks is the everything. SO influential to my preteen years, and i watch the whole thing again every couple of years. i wanted to be audrey so badly, but i was always kind of a donna. i even went to the town and cafe where it was filmed when i lived in the PNW. it didn’t look anything like the show, and both the coffee and pie were less than damn good. whatever. david lynch forever. even his silly silly music. not the book though. he’s a visual artist, not… Read more »

i already loved the pnw, but twin peaks intensified that!

i had no idea til the show was over that david lynch was my favourite character…GORDON COLE! always thought i was kinda a lucy, though i can identify with all of them. which is AWESOME and so a good sign of rad characters.

YAY that this is happening! i just watched twin peaks for the first time last year or something and holy moses.

i have the cap stellium (if we’re doing placidus, though, capricorn is intercepted in my first house, waah), and saturn is on my lilith right now, too. (career morph? yes please)

totally spellbound by twin peaks. it SO spoke to me. even the clothing worn was very early-90s but also surreal in a way that made it seem like…something else.

AKAPlutoMM Member

I’ve been watching the Cap stellium generation come of age and every one of them with an artistic bone in their body are VERY into Twin Peaks.

Neptune in Capricorn…surrealism with class.

In fact I just had a Cap stellium pal over last night who informed me that Lynch cannot create or organize his thoughts unless the room around him is organized. He also claims to eat the same thing every day- pickles, hard boiled eggs and tuna sandwiches. So basically Lynch and I are entirely simpatico- down to the diet.

Cap/Scorp = obsessive about routine/organization.

I wrote my honours thesis on David Lynch and Twin Peaks, interesting. I studied a lot psycho-analytic theory, which was the basis of contemporary film theory at that period of time (and no doubt still is). I was very much interested in the notion of the uncanny, how we fear the dark, bogie men, monsters under the bed, death etc; a theory of Freud’s taken from an amazing book of essay by him on Art and Literature. The dude could write and did extend himself beyond hysterical women. It worked well in context to the show, all that weird, repressed… Read more »

Speaking of David Lynch, remember Mulholland Drive? I watched that movie stone-cold sober and yet could not escape the feeling that I had somehow been slipped a roofie. It was definitely a WTF?! movie.

There is something about films like that that makes my brain feel ecstatic. 2001/ space odyssey was another. No need to think logically or follow some stupid plot. I can just let it wash over me and soak in the scenes like a sponge 🙂 (oh hey Neptune more water analogies)

I absolutely adored and loathed that film. So disturbing, so good.

Saw Mullholland Drive when it came out and loved it. Pretty much understood what was going on and was surprised at the end when I heard so many,” What the f…?” comments when I came out. Lynch speaks mine and many other people’s language that was not being represented and I’m so grateful he catered to us.

I adore David Lynch. I have a huge poster of ‘Blue Velvet’ hanging smack dab center in my living room, have a musical playlist called ‘Lynchland’ on the android and own every film he’s even done (including shorts) on Blu-ray. Yes, I copped the Twin Peaks Blu-ray release, pre-ordered it a year early. I wish I could have attended his exhibit in Brisbane, alas, no can do. But I DID buy a shirt with his face on it the week it opened, lol. I watched the show (and read the books) when it debuted, and I am excited to hear… Read more »

Literally since the day Mercury went retro I’ve been trying to arrange a collection of this stupid iPhone 6+ which is like..I don’t know, some crazy torture method. For those peeps in Brisbane, Australia, we are very lucky to have David Lynch’s exhibition showing at our own Gallery of Modern Art. It closes this Friday (5 June) … so hurry to see it (I am – in avid anticipation of a new Lynch era of strange, surreal menace).
