The Devil Again

The Devil card in Tarot FREAKS people out. It is especially irritating to see it popping up in relation to a new person in  your life. We joked about it in this Astro-Gaga.

In the online Tarot here, it has different meanings depending on where in the spread it is and what it’s next to. I don’t take as dim a view of it as the best Tarot reader i know (she’s passed on, sadly), a woman named Mary with the most gloomy Satunine demeanor possible and an insistence that the Devil card always meant “nasty business, most likely a man.”

Nor do i take such an enthusiastic approach to this card as, say, Crowley, who had it as Capricorn in high force, healthy avarice and ambition.  Pagan to the max. It is variously life force but also addictions, dangerous people and/or being enslaved to debt.  It is NOT the Christian Devil – a creature blended strangely from the horny Goat-God Pan or Dionysus (very Capricorn on heat) the morning star Venus (aka Lucifer or Light-Bearer) and several other sources.

The very word “devil” comes from “deva” or “diva” or “goddess.”    So I think – and the Tarot on site reflects this – that when the Devil archetype/card appears, scan for first the prospect of anything dysfunctional – are you fuqing with your Qi in pursuit of a non-you material goal, having your brain scrambled by lust for/with someone who could be totally dodgy and/or in denial about a person in your life (you even) who might have a dependency spiralling out of control?

Once you’re scanned for the obvious signs of “devillish” dysfunction go all Pan/Dionysus on this. IN what way could a more earthy, ruttish and libidinal construct benefit your life now? What wildness within might you be repressing and how could you unleash it in an extremely cool way?  And yes, Mars in Capricorn IS particularly synched to the Devil card.

The right palm of the Pan figure shows the life line, head line & fate line; also the fingers of Mercury & Apollo are held close together leaving a wide gap between fingers of Saturn & Jupiter. Notice that the Pan figure has talons rather than the goat hooves you’d expect to see? Some association with the owl, moon deity, the night, wisdom. Also the female & male subjects have horns; this would suggest that they are as much a part of the message of the card as the Pan figure itself. I don’t see it as an altogether unfriendly… Read more »

Alright peeps, I get it already! (This is my exasperated expression of frustration but also agreement with all the wise words put forth here.) I got the Devil in the 10th in my most recent tarot. Self-imposed prison, pound of flesh for majority of soul, but also I believe I can free myself from the material/mental shackles. Please, Universe, just give me the strength to keep going, keep working. My intentions have always been pretty solid. So you could ask yourself “how am I currently enslaved in my work/career realms? What belief/behaviour/idea am I clinging to that is keeping me trapped?”

Thank you and agree Prowlncrab, these are the questions I have been asking myself. I have answers…in many ways I know how I am enslaved…it’s by the inner critic/judge/negative monster that is so good at seeing the bad side of things. So hypervigilant too so the optimistic me has to be hypervigilant to combat it. What’s most frustrating is there can be too many answers, the constant back-and-forth, there’s always another side to everything, a la “well it’s definitely this…but then again there’s that…but yet again, this other thing here…” (I’m looking at you, Mars/Saturn/Pluto stellium in Libra) that keeps… Read more »

The devil to me is a humorous character. Humorous like a good horror movie when you don’t know whether to laugh or scream or a bit of both. Never underestimate how much the universe wants to help you overcome your fears. They are usually baseless and quite debilitating. He is the perfect character to test those fears, make you aware of them and then have a chuckle with you once you overcome. Fear and desire are mixed up a lot in our lives, so next time you pull the devil and that fear rises up, slay it and take your… Read more »

Such a classic card of addiction and compulsive behavior- when interest becomes an all consuming obsession and blots out everything else that you should be thinking about. The dark side of passion. I once was completely unhealthily obsessed with this guy…he used me all the time and was jerk to me but when he came around I could NOT SAY NO to him. I was helpless like an addict. I always look at the Devil as your own personal Qi Vampire/Love Zombie. Whatever you’re afraid of most, obsessive about, chasing in circles, or distracted by. The Devil is Devil’s advocate really. The extra slice of chocolate cake, going down a rabbit hole on the internet looking for things to feel bad about, or anything really that keeps us from ascension. I like to think of the Devil as our teacher that is biggest A-Hole in the room. The lesson we have to meet. Almost like Chiron’s role. It’s the biggest wound, but gets us the most healing. Yes, I see the Devil as the Fallen Angel serving humanity by showing us our deepest fears and worst nightmares so we can utilise our free will and wield that power consciously.
It is a consciousness program after all in binary code. Good/Evil, God/Devil, Male/Female.

p.s. I like the idea of Chiron as the Devil, he seems such a teary fellow, always healing and hurting. He needs to have a bit of a romp I think.

Funny, when I pull cards, the Devil is the least of my worries. I understand him. He is half-truth masquerading as The Truth, addiction to the ego-mind, excessive materialism, seeing the physical world devoid of Spirit. It’s never a surprise when he turns up, and I don’t see doom- just a corrective message. Don’t forget- those chains are hanging loosely on the man and woman’s necks. They willingly enslave themselves. It’s when I get the five of Pentacles that my heart sinks. The Devil card in a romance read is an addiction to one another. This is always bad, it means someone cannot let go of you and is probably deeply insecure of you leaving them, perhaps jealous and controlling but more likely very possessive. It’s not always bad… it represents a tie that cannot be broken — for better or worse.

islandgirl
islandgirl

I think that the challenge *is* to break that tie. That’s where self realization and your will come into play – to break those chains. There is always a way out of any bondage – first you have to recognize it for what it really is (a delusion), then you’ve really got to want to break it and not feed this delusion, and to do that you have to work it from your truth and with love….Not easy, but possible.

12th house virgo
12th house virgo

“a tie that cannot be broken — for better or worse.” No such thing.

southnodeinvirgo
southnodeinvirgo

agreed. ‘a tie that cannot be broken for better or worse’, ‘soul contract’ ,, marriage? just a thought… if you’re not fighting it there’s no addiction.. technically. no to feeling helpless

12th house virgo

If something is meant to be, it is. No way around it. Where’s obsession factor into that? Obsession is really just a fancy way of having a shitty attitude toward reality. And no attitude toward reality is destined. That’s a choice.

southnodeinvirgo

12th house virgo

GREAT POST. I have been thinking a lot about Tarot cards and the different mythologies behind them and there are so many links that seem to run through Christianity as well… for example: Magician card, symbolises connection between the gods above, the earth and the underworld. Magicians could ‘die’ and be ‘re-born’ just like Jesus was. And there are links between the strength card and the virgin Mary too? Blows my mind, everything really is a cycle huh?

The devil, always gets the better end of the deal, a pound of your soul for a pinch of the pleasurable thing, plenty more where that comes from little lady.

Not a dream, but…Many years ago was hanging out with a school friend who was slowly acquiring a heroin habit from her boyfriend, who was hardened user. One day we looked into his ice -blue pinned eyes and caught the chill breeze of the devil in broad daylight, on a sunny street in Newtown. I still remember it.

Like DP below says, ” the chains are hanging loosely around the man’s and woman’s heads – they willingly enslave themselves. I think The Devil represents the Great Temptation. In exchange for that exquisite pain, that is your ultimate fix, you make a choice to enslave yourself to it by giving it part of your will each time. It’s very true, one can’t always say ‘the devil made me do it’ 🙂 definitely is a part of oneself. Especially vices like, in my case cigarettes and sugary stuff, when I have pre diabetes.
The willpower comes and goes…

But there are certain things that I know I could never, never do. And bigger more mysterious agencies/energies at play.
I read that Anita Cobby’s father said looked out at the sky the night she was murdered and saw a huge demonic face in the sky, though he had no idea what was to happen til much later.

sphinx
sphinx

While it is true the devil is of oneself to a degree – the question is to what degree? On one level we are all One. But you are incarnating here on your own and separately too. It is such a personal situation I hesitate to rule out the ‘devil made me do it’ for some, while for others that would be plainly silly.
We have the same vices btw, lol.

Veronica

Well that’s the thing, Sphinxy, I do wonder about really horrific stuff and can’t help feeling that there are larger energies causing them through human agency

sphinx

I definitely have perceived the way there are beings that positively bathe themselves in the energy released on the battle field. Sekhmet & all that crew love a good blood bath. I think Rwanda is an example of how that energy can go nuts & invite entities that rouse humans to acts that they lose themselves in, so they may feast on human misery. Eros son of Ares and Aphrodite are all recognised for the roles in war, the thrill of the kill etc. War created via cold logic knowing what will feast there and encouraging it is what is… Read more »

Having a friend who is a psych in a prison hospital for the criminally insane I support this theory. He said they are usually lovely people when on their meds, very peaceful and it’s so sad as many of these criminals cannot recall the crime that has them incarcerated, as it wasn’t really them.

Many are victims of their traumatic past & addictions & whom might equally have made excellent channels and mediums of beautiful energies if they were brought up in the correct environment.

DP
DP

Ooh good point.

My teacher told me that most people are ‘transmediums’- meaning they have access to those channels- and that most alcoholics and drug addicts are what she called ‘out-of-control transmediums’. She said in their attempt to block out all the noise, they’re ironically letting more unwanted energies in by lowering their awareness and defences.

sphinx
sphinx

Yes indeed, some of the less personally developed but talented clients/people I know are a real problem to work with. They perceive a million pieces of the puzzle at once in trance and can’t find the narrative to hang it together on. They are people who enjoy that schizoid, chaotic, stream of consciousness with wilful disinterest in any self-discipline or emotional honesty. They think they are ‘wild’ and unconventional, but I think they are just indulging & could do better, lol.

Veronica

Funny you should say, Sphinx and DP, because the hardened user, who we also knew from school times, was apparently very psychic.

They went to quite a draconian private school and a handful of them went to on to have a heroin problem through their 20s. But sadly my friend, though not using now, is still splintered, she never really recovered. Her family shunned her.

I like to believe that the basic instinct, the genetic fabric of humans is to love, but am at a loss to understand cruelty and atrocity (but Scorp moon a bit morbidly interested in topic sometimes).

Anonymous

My teacher actually said that these ‘out of control transmediums’ were the most psychic of all, and that’s what led them down their path- that and a fear of letting themselves be what they are.

sphinx
sphinx

They are the most psychic, but that is a questionable skill all on it’s own! I find no value in psychic ability if people are irresponsible in every other way. Learning to deal with fear well is a more useful and admirable quality. I feel compassion for these lost shamans as our culture gives no value to their abilities. But ability without ethics is a real problem.

Charles

The Devil is opposite of The Lovers. The Lovers is about consciously using our higher powers to discriminate between things and make decisions. The Devil is about being in a lower state of delusion that makes us unaware of the things that control us.

Sphinx

The coin has two sides, Taurus has Haute – Lo qualities, that would be nice to see reflected in the tarot imo. How about it Charles? Can it be done?

Charles

I always thought that some of Taurus’ baser, low qualities were also his haute hot side. You know Taurus will pin you face down in the dirty mud and you’ll enjoy it. I remember my Virgo girlfriend, after doing something particularly dirty, said in an exasperated tone, “I only liked doing that because you MADE me like doing that.”

Lovers and Devil are opposites and have all sorts of correspondences. Lovers is about making a high spiritual choice, and Devil is about being enslaved by situations that are not what you would have consciously chosen.
