Both the Main Hobbits Are Virgos?

Filed in VIRGO

The Hobbit

So i have just been informed that both the Hobbits (from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit prequel) are VIRGOS. Frodo and Bilbo Baggins share the same birthday – September 22.

YES that could make one or both of them a Libra, depending on the year and YES, these are birthdates on Middle Earth, which presumably has a different ephemeris and is, of course, fictional.

But Virgo resonates the most for me. Who the hell else would you trust on the big-time quests like these?! Competent and unassuming, completely adept at picking up on nuance and their very lack of pretense making them (sort of) immune to dark spells, ring wraiths and giant spiders.

An Aries would have sent all the grumbling dwarfs packing before even breaking camp. Sagittarius would PUT ON THE RING half an hour into the trip. Pisces & Gemini would say they dropped it into Mt Doom but then double back to try and buy out the elves or something.

The humble Hobbits as Virgos works for me.  Tolkien was also, obviously, a keen scholar of Celtic mythology so perhaps he liked this date for its proximity to the Equinox.  Sauron, a la Christianity’s Satan, is a fallen Elf/Angel and Gollum a totally fuqed up Hobbit.

The only other actual birth date mentioned in the whole deal is that of the hunky soldier-king-ranger Aragorn; Pisces.  That works also – he does not like formal clothing and spends most of the books in camouflage, in love with an elf princess he cannot have. He comes and goes at odd times, on mysterious missions.

Thoughts?

22 September is the threshold of Equinox! The transition from ‘light’ to ‘darkness’ or vice versa based on the northern or southern hemisphere.

Hobbits being virgo’s rings true. As virgo is ruled by the goddess Dianna (Artemis) of the hunt. Virgo’s nature of purity and the keeper of the ring must have a pure nature, to not be corrupted by the rings power. Dianna’s symbolism is protection, focus and the forests, animals and mountains. She who belongs to her herself alone. Frodo spends lengths of time in solitude with the ring during the epic Hobbit saga. Broromir : I know why you seek solitude. You suffer. I see it day by day. You sure you do not suffer needlessly? There are other ways… Read more »

Hmmm, cool analysis. This is interesting to think on.. Imagine, then, Boromir, Son of Denethor, a Scorpio? Perhaps. As a teenager I assumed he was a Leo. He was always my favourite in the books, and Sean Bean’s portrayal just compounded my love of that character. He is chivalrous and endlessly compassionate and loyal to those he loves, but subconsciously undermined and ruled by his own quest for glory, and his need to please his overbearing father and protect his brother. He is oddly free of the racism that pervades other members of the fellowship, too, which makes me think… Read more »

Tolkien was a Capricorn. I think the Hobbits share his ‘reluctant hero’ status- he was the only one of his writing group to go to war and come home. That said, the Hobbits love of home is def . Virgoesque.

Yep, totes St.Virgo martyrs, marching off to save the world. The only thing wrong is that they don’t grumble in the slightest! The self-sacrificing to the point of (near) their own annihilation is a dark Virgo trait, and should be accompanied by plenty of passive aggressive “Oh no… I’ll go to Mordor alone, it’s okay… I’m only sacrificing MYSELF, without any WARRIOR TRAINING OR ANYTHING, it’s fine, nono, keep your sword, bow and dagger, men, elves and dwarves, I’m FINE…it’s not like I’m THREE FOOT NOTHING or anything…”

I happen to share birthdays with Bilbo and Frodo! And I hadn’t thought about the Virgo aspect until now. I know that in the movies with Bilbo’s early adventures I’m just like him: chaos comes knocking on my door (on his in the form of a bunch of dwarves and an assuming wizard) and I just want it to leave me and my kitchen alone while I bury myself in my hole. But then am eventually pulled into the adventure and I can keep my shizz together once I’m in the right mindset and have accepted the journey. (I think… Read more »

too funny…I can totally relate I do not like noisy, loud visitors in my home (Hobbit hole) either, I like my silence and stacks of books instead.

My youngest son is a Sept 22,1996 birthdate. Everything you say about them is true! He is charismatic and extremely physically adept as well. His chart is of course, quite fascinating to me…ASC 15’00 Scorpio, Sun 29’59 Virgo, Moon 29’59 Cap. (Sun trine Moon, exact) Leo Mars trine Saturn. : )

who wouldn’t fall for liv tyler yeesh, seeing the astro of the characters/actors is always my favorite and usually makes things fit more. For example seeing the astro of various mad men actors really made their characters make way more sense, I think in most things the role slowly morphs to the actors personality so its usually preferable to me then seeing the astro of the character. Like in lost they tried but some asto in it but weren’t very good at it and if they just made it to match the astro of the actors it would have actually… Read more »

def Virgo! That feasting scene in the movie? espionage!
I don’t think a Libran would want to do the hobbit jobs.

lol, another Virgo here and I think I must be part hobbit too. Well, hobbits are so incredibly earthy, and I’ve got a lot of earth, and a 2nd house sun.

But what made me laugh is I feel I have hobbit feet. Not hairy thankfully, but big and very wide. I have so much trouble finding shoes that fit. Clearly I should just go barefoot all the time like hobbits do.

Oh yeah, I’m thinking of the way Bilbo really really hates having the dwarves mess his house up, but sucks it up for the sake of… honestly there doesn’t seem to be a great reason, but I do know that a Virgo would suck anything up just for the sake of doing it.

I would 100% put the ring on half an hour into the journey.

A Pisces would over-identify with Gollum and fling themselves into the fire pit after him.

Ha! He was probably overwhelmed and so inherently good-mannered and polite that it didn’t even OCCUR to him to kick them out! So virgo of him. No wonder that scene made me laugh so much…

I am a multi Virgo who identifies as part Hobbit!

I am 5ft nothing with hobbit like feet (they are not that bad but I guess in foot reading you would call them earth/square)

I love elevenses and added an extra meal while back-packing through Thailand – was a fruit smoothie with a tin of condensed milk in it, that’s just how they make em

Umm I like travel…and staying at home and would love a round house

My little 5 yr old dictated an adventure he wrote. It’s basically an amalgam of LOTR, Harry Potter & How to Train Your Dragon.

One of my favourite parts was a Wizard named ‘Dumbledore’ asking a hobbit to go on an adventure. The hobbit says, “No, no, no, I am not going on adventure” and goes home. So Virgo.

Interesting realization today. My only planet in third house Virgo is Pluto and as a merc in Aries, gem moon and gem rising I always wondered how Pluto in the third Virgo expressed itself. I worked it out today I think. My ability to edit ! A client sent me a 160 page document yesterday. It is now a 3 page iOS application with links that convey clearly what that 160 page mess could never have done. The client was initially shocked by this after spending so long on the doc but just called and thanked me profusely. Another great… Read more »

Maybe past-you figured that if future-you were digging around in the scraps, you might be sufferingfrom short-term impecuniousness and need a few$ for the shops 😉

davidl

Impecuniousness (yes I had to look it up 🙂 or looking that way comes in handy when the kids are around. There’s poor old dad scraping his old tobacco dust into an inferior cigarette. Hmmm, Now may not be the time to ask him for that $250 .
Oow there’s $100. Though he is so impecunious I think he needs it more than me. The money was claimed by kataka for Thai takeaway.

Also, virgos are adept at actually doing what they are asked. Even if they are somewhat daunted… After all destroying the ring is nothing if not a great service for the good of all.

I read all of Tolkien’s works many years ago, even the lesser known writings.

Ha! I love this read. Big Tolkein fan.

I agree he chose their birthday very precisely. I also think it’s interesting that Frodo’s adventure begins on Bilbo’s 111th birthday. Something magical in that number- the 1’s of beginning, the three of bearing fruit.

Definitely Virgo traits in both, and I also think Hobbits as a species are Taurus- loving the land and the working of it. I wonder, though, if Frodo and Bilbo didn’t have some moon or rising like Sag. They were definitely considered eccentric wanderers amongst their brethren.

pi

Good point about the Taurus thing. breakfast, Second Breakfast, elevenses, hello
🙂

But yes
I have a crush on all 3rd decanate virgos. Maybe it’s because I am a 3rd dec Pisces and there is a Thing there. But they are extra spesh and brainy and tend to be less blankly detail oriented and more sorta poetic maybe

DP

Huh… I think you have something there, Pi. I recall now having several crushes whose b’day was September 22nd. (Of course, it stuck in my mind because of the hobbits)
