Heavy Metal Yoga

Heavy Metal Yoga

Lia is one of my lovely subscribers – when i heard what she was doing i wanted to know more and so voila here it is. Metal Yoga seems so super-Uranian and ultra-NOW. This could be the new Bikram people!

As an Aquarian, I consider myself to be a progressive thinker and something of a revolutionary. With my sun in the 8th house, I’ve always been powerfully drawn to the mysteries of death, rebirth, and that is which is taboo and forbidden. A practicing witch and daughter of Lilith, I walk the left-hand path and love the darkness. And so, of course, I adore heavy metal!

When I discovered yoga, which is historically a sinister esoteric practice, I became obsessed and completely dedicated myself to its study. I traveled to India several times in order to learn from senior teachers who could help me to advance and deepen my knowledge of this spiritual endeavor. However, I have consistently found myself to be a “black sheep” in the sangha, even while proving to be a stellar student. Covered with tattoos of corvidae, snakes, and magical sigils, I did not blend into the group, nor did I desire to adopt its mainstream white-light mentality. Yet I remain somehow devoted and have managed to develop a substantial understanding and appreciation of yoga.

Seeking a transformative spiritual practice while remaining true to my antinomian Aquarian nature, and inspired by friends who could benefit from what I’ve learned but who also reject the cookie-cutter moral paradigms of modern yoga, I created Metal Yoga. I’ve managed to rebelliously combine my passion for traditional yoga with my love of all things occult, subversive, and beautifully hard-core. My favorite music to play in class is funeral doom- slow, heavy, growling and depressive dirges. These frequencies resonate subliminally with the lower chakras, evoking Scorpionic 8th house energies of sex and death. While performing classical yoga asana and breathing techniques, we use the heavy vibrations to go deeper into the shadows of the subconscious, into mystical, metamorphic, and meditative states, in a search for some sort of dark transcendence…

 Thoughts?

I would be opening a chain of Metal  Yoga studios called 8th House, lol.

Heavy metal yoga is rad 🙂 I really like to play Tool and Deftones during my home practice. If you love the music, like I do, then it just brings more and more joy into your practice + gives you super encouragement to rock out chaturanga! xo

Today I realised that yoga is what is missing from my life. Planted and orange tree and a blue hydrangea plant today. Benn feeling really low on energy. Very sad, lost and totally burned out. I know a new cycle is beginning but the death before it is hard. I have a weird Feng Shui related question. Maybe someone can help. I have a framed drawing I did just pre pluto transit called the handless maiden. It’s dark but really powerful. The thing is I don’t feel it belongs in my home anymore as it’s very much Persephone at her… Read more »

Love it!!

I’m a long time metal head (especially funeral doom!) and lover of yoga for the past few years this sounds amazing – I wish you weren’t so far away! Lia I’ve been thinking of starting a home practice, do you have any tips for bands you find really work for practicing yoga to? I seriously want to play with this idea! 🙂

Agree with Seagoat & WL that I am feeling confused by this. I mean I am all for harnessing the depth of vibration and power of the lower chakras, but I am indifferent to the romance of remaining in that vibration for any length of time.

I remember reading that village voice piece last year when in teacher training and being so, so inspired. Had I stuck with it, that’s the kind of classes I would have held, though with more heavy droney electronica and less metal. I feel like it’s such a necessary evolution and I hope it catches on everywhere!!

I can see the logic in this. I’ve been a fan of heavy, low tuned, drone ‘metal’ for many, many years and have always found a peculiar peace in it. Music by artists like Sunn O))), Earth, Black Boned Angel, and similar acts have done well for me in this regards. I have a fond memory of a Black Boned Angel concert a few years ago which I and a few others sat and meditated through right up in front of the stage. Jakob, Isis, Meniscus, Kerretta, and Explosions In The Sky are high recommended instrumental acts of a similar… Read more »

Firstly, http://38.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lekmkq43gJ1qd0n7do1_400.jpg Next, this is awesome. Sometimes I listen to http://www.maschinengeist.org/ when I’m working late at night or early in the morning and I get into a strange state of spacey but also very focused. One with the sounds. I practice Mysore style because I just can’t with the hippie dippie pep talk and being subjected to vocal-heavy Michael Franti or Jack Johnson style soundtrack while I’m trying to release my hips and my BRAIN. I LOVE the silence/just breathing waves in the mysore room… but I will return to classes sometimes just for the teachers who have amazing playlists… Read more »

Yes! I would love to try this. Scorp rising with uranus conj ascendant. Venus, mars, jupiter, and lilith in my 8th. I love yoga but haven’t practiced in a month, maybe a different flavor would do it.

The dark energies of nature are as essential to both entropy AND rebirth as all the other shades. Big thumbs up – yoga will evolve, flower, and scatter into diverse expressions like all other phenomena. I love this. Bring it to my town.

Yoga historically was an esoteric practice but sinister? How so? By “creating” your own style of yoga, you are essentially doing the same thing as those you disparage as “cookie-cutter”. Yoga is a 5,000 year old health maintenance system and if you are spinning it with heavy metal music and making it intentionally “dark”, then it’s not really yoga at all. It’s more like theater. What’s the difference between what you are doing and those who play new age music, light incense and do group hug? Perhaps you didn’t blend into your sangha because you didn’t want to. Yoga is… Read more »

Sinister can mean left handed or alt. path rather than “evil”.

Waterylibran

Yes, I’m aware of that, but in this instance I don’t think its left-handeness that’s being alluded to.

Thanks for opening up this side of the discussion Seagoat. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the sanskrit root word that means to yoke, or to join, and the true function of performing asana is to prepare the body to be able to sit for extended periods in meditation. It is extremely dangerous to open up ones’ consciousness to the dark side – believe me there are dark forces out there only too ready to ‘jump in’ if invited. I too would like an explanation of where the statement that yoga is a sinister esoteric practice came from – I’ve never… Read more »

Esoteric – yes. For a long time, it was taught/practiced only in the higher castes. But then Tantra brought it to the “householders”: the normal folk. And yes, per Waterylibran, the original purpose of asana was merely to get your ya-ya’s out in order to concentrate on the real mission: meditation, which leads you to your own Divine inner spirit. As for the music, I admit to being “old school”. I love music but it really distracts me from the purpose of my practice. Once I went to a workshop with a live Kirtan band, which might sound super groovy… Read more »

Yup, sinister is not a word that should be used used when talking about yoga asana, or any of the other branches of yoga.

I haven’t created my own style of yoga. We practice traditional yoga asana. We just listen to dark music while we do it.

K-Gem

one Ashtanga Yoga session I went to had the teacher playing Shiva chants. They fit the bill in terms of being dark…Yoga to music is a different experience although I admit to preferring it sans music. As a lover of music I tend to zero in on the sounds, whereas I want to concentrate on the yoga moves while I’m doing them. It’s a form of meditation to me.

However, whatever it takes to get you on the mat – go for it!

Yeah, when I go running, I can’t listen to music. I can’t help myself, I get synchronized to the song and it throws off my pace. So I listen to audio books, there is no beat to latch on to. I got this idea from my painting teacher, he said he can’t listen to music, he starts painting in rhythm to the music. So he plays nutcase right-wing talk radio, which constantly disrupts his concentration, so he really has to focus on what he’s doing. LOL. My sister has her iTunes library painstakingly sorted by beats per minute. Then she… Read more »

“8th house” lol Crazy 8s! I suppose I practice a kind of Metal Meditation on my commute to work… lots of heavy, low beats. When I get to work, it’s a very 8th house vibe; my job is to accompany people through their losses & toward their deaths. Sometimes they want to talk about sex. And money: money comes up a lot in convo. Usually on my way home from work I listen to nothing at all. Reboot. So I don’t know if metal yoga would be right for me, like 8th house overload, but this is a really fresh… Read more »

I can see how metal music would help to prime you for work!…I have a great visual of you driving along in your car (i hope it’s black or red) wearing the headdress from your avatar, cooly absorbing the metal vibes, charging your scorpionic-ness as you go forth to do your 8th house thang…. and I suppose you must be aware of those 5 wishes of the… Read more »

I love this! I want to do Metal Yoga! I agree, it’s so important to honour the dark side of ourselves. I think if we don’t, then it can come out to play anyway, in a messed up and distorted fashion! This woman is very inspiring!

Sounds fantastic. Re: white light mentality…….so with you there. I go to a crystal meditation sessions and just love it, but some peoples lack of practicality drive me to despair. Don’t like progress? Disconnect from the electricity grid, sell your car and don’t even think of travelling anyway far. We don’t money to build roads? Well what can you trade to get a track to your front gate? Mere manifestation will bring everything I want to me? Why can’t I grow lettuce? Sometimes it’s hard to face reality, especially when progress has meant gradual and increasingly devastating destruction.

Yes, that is their answer. Head in the sand is easier because they find the devastation too hard to bear. I just find it incredibly hypocritical when they’ve driven a car to get their in the first place, but don’t want any new roads, oil devastates the earth and metal is being pulled out of the ground
