Voila Maleficent – the first Disney fairy tale to be told from the point of view of its villainess – Maleficent, in this case. So okay, i can’t wait. Having not seen the movie yet, i am unsure of exactly how evil the character is but it would seem that she is a strong, nature-loving female who had her heart hardened by some sort of patriarchal, anti-nature event and seeks revenge…albeit in all the wrong places. I could be wrong – who knows more?
Anyway, Maleficent is undeniably a dark goddess Lilith type figure – note also her Hathor style headgear, that is a nod to an extremely ancient female deity, the Holy Cow herself. It’s a brilliant sign of the new era that a company such as Disney is doing a story that does not just demonize an archetype like our Lilith-Maleficent but at least attempts nuance.
Speaking of nuance, i thought of Lilith when i saw the Pope releasing his doves of peace the other day, only to have them attacked by a big black crow.
The crow, raven et al are birds that fly between the worlds in mythology and associated with the Morrigan (Celtic Shapeshifting Trickster Goddess) and the Norse Odin – like Mercury – amongst many others. I don’t see this as an anti-peace omen more like some kind of symbolic rage of all the innocent witches (real and just accused of such) queers, midwives, divorcees and so on persecuted by that church over the centuries.
And here is Tom Bagshaw’s take on Maleficent – note the Raven. Thoughts?
