The Fixers Manifesto – So Totes Pluto in Cap

Filed in Pluto

There is the Old Economy (pre-Pluto in Cap) and the New Economy (Pluto in Capricorn) – this is basically a glue ad but it’s very Pluto in Cap…Someone’s so getting it.

Thoughts?

Here in North Cyprus there are no big shops, well-known brands, megastores or shopping malls. It’s due to the embargo on this little nation because Turkey intervened to stop the Greek Cypriots massacring Turkish Cypriots and ethnic cleansing the island of anything Turkish. So it’s a pretty poor nation, is developing slowly but is not swamped by consumerism. Our first experience of this was our first weekend in Kyrenia when our Land Rover broke down. It was the starter motor, and my husband took it to the mechanic who got us on the road again (whack the starter motor with… Read more »

Fixing is good. You can fix things that aren’t physical too.

WHAT What what?! I spend my working days pulling apart big government websites and restructuring/re-writing them and migrating them into better content management systems. I just wish the pre-Pluto in Cap manifesto had been ‘Fuqing Build it Properly to Begin With’. Still, all this fixing is keeping my babies fed and a roof over our heads. Also, when I’m done with each of my projects what you see is government information which is written in plain english, easy to navigate and meets WACG2 (accessiblity) requirements. I provide ‘pathways to goals’. I don’t suppose you can get much more Capricorn-ian than… Read more »

Thanks for the reminder Mystic! There is a lot of good DIY information on the internet, but sometimes I forget that when faced with unfamiliar problems to fix around the house. Sometimes the only way to get experience is to do it!

“Hmmm, this is serious. I’m afraid he is suffering from a case of Prepluto. It’s difficult to manage as so much of the illness is within the psychological processes. For starters, let’s recommend a course in post-structuralism, and daily visits to a homeless shelter where he’ll be talking to the regulars for say, one hour.”

Fix it up,
Wear it out.
Make it do
Or do without.

Cute, Pi πŸ™‚ I like the ‘make it do’.

I adore this manifesto. This is what I think about every day. I love taking second-hand things and restoring them to full use. I can’t deal with new things a lot of the time. This is gorgeous!

I love this. I think we’re all going to have to become fixers and I wish that ‘Men’s Sheds’ with all that ‘fixing’ equipment, band saws, drop drills, etc were People’s Sheds. Can you imagine how stuffed we’d be if through war, pestilence, plague or whatever exports from China just stopped?

Pi

I know. we’re such pathetic cheapskates. relying on $2/ per hour labour so we can buy a set of saucepans for $35. Capitalism chasing the ample profit margin!

I can’t buy most cheap crap. I can feel if something was made by a machine, with no personal human attention. Most food is packaged that way – dehumanized. Or I can feel if it was made by people in horrible conditions with no hope. It affects the product. I can also feel if someone worked hard on it, but was proud of their product. That stuff is the best.

Great. Now I feel guilty about the new washer. I try to fix things, but that sucker is heavy. I fixed my disposal. I’m making my own furniture because furniture I can afford is built of garbage and won’t last. I have to see my curtains still. Fuq, being a Virgo is exhausting.

12th house virgo

*sew my curtains…

I hate sewing. Maybe that’s my hidden talent.

speaking of furniture. I am in a different country, but do you guys have good second hand or charity stores over there? or places where people bring their furniture, washing machines, other completely random objects (samurai swords, surfboards, pedestal fans) and you can bid on things, like eBay but in an actual warehouse? Council (local government) collection nights when you can scour the neighbourhood for all sorts of interesting furniture / objects?

12th house virgo

We do. Good Will is one. I’ve taken lots to them, but their prices are pretty high, imo, but they employ people who may have a hard time being employed otherwise. We have a great recycling program in the area for toxic/metal stuff too. I would love to organize a community-wide flea market. We do have a Community Clean Up Day for the neighborhood and usually resort to taking our neighbors trash. I got headboard that way – I ended up selling it for $10 on Craigslist. I don’t want to buy uphostery stuff used. Too much old Qi. And,… Read more »

LOL disposable furniture. I remember when I was so poor, I only had a 2 inch foam pad to sleep on, you know, like the sort of pad you’d roll up and take camping to put under your sleeping bag. I don’t know how, but I managed to convince my Kataka girlfriend to sleep with me on that foam pad. Ow my knees! But that was embarrassing, so I had to save up to buy a new bed. I remember going to a mattress store and looking at the two cheapest models (the only ones I could afford). I asked… Read more »

“give your products a longer life’…stuff your shoes with tissue paper the minute you take them off, they will last 5 years longer.

Stop making lists & just do the action the minute it comes to mind?

I bought my Doc Martens in 1992, they are just lately starting to crack and fall apart since I got stuck in a flood of water up to my ankles. Some things are nearly indestructible, but still designed to be used up.

Part of giving products a longer life includes buying better quality stuff. Stuff that will last longer than a season or a year.

Charles
Charles

You never really know. I have a pair of cheap Mossimo short pants I bought at Target in like 1994 for $12. I never thought they’d last almost 20 years, and I wear them a lot. Then I have expensive khaki pants I hardly ever wore and they just frayed at the edges and wore out in 2 or 3 years.

Anyway, the point is, find the quality of the things you already have. Sometimes it’s hard to see.

As a architect working mostly on renovations and extensions – a professional fixer – I whole hearted endorse all of the above but especially 5 and 10.

5 – Do you really need that extra bathroom / ensuite / carpark / media room? Wouldn’t you rather perhaps have space for a tree, a garden, a space that is based on human interaction?

10. – Its not my job to fit your life into my ideal / style / aesthetic choices but to guide the process so that your get the places and spaces that suit your life, tastes and style.

Pi

gawd “media room” …
then again I do like the idea of hiding the TV-watching sloth out of plain sight. TV noise when I am not specifically watching it makes me itchy.

Leave my stuff alone. It’s my stuff, if anyone is going to break it, it will be ME.

LOL I forgot about Mystic’s “don’t fuq with my stuff” Taurus rant.

I just posted this on the aqua thread but I want to put it here too.
These are the type of stats that in a few words say so much more

The one year income of the richest 100 people in the world would feed every hungry person (over a billion) Β in the world for 3 years.Β

I’m pretty sure an aquarius was behind that one somewhere.
Can Pluto in Cap fix that ?

Pi

It’s trying!!

davidl

Yes, now this is not assets we at talking about, its yearly income !!! if they all gave one third of their billions to the starving each year …. Bang ! Hunger and all it’s associated problems solved. Why is this not an easy thing to organize ?

I am obviously working on #11, which summarizes my entire campaign. That yes, plastics aren’t evil – some versions are, and it doesn’t end there. Before people used plastics with only end product to shelf in mind, now we have to think: how are we using it, how are we disposing of it, what is the typical life cycle of product use, and what are the impacts even before use. Don’t get me wrong, you can make a substrate that contains as little evil as possible, but did it create evil to get that way? Did it use minerals from… Read more »

Ban Glad Wrap though?
Think it’s called Saranwrap in America. That ultra fine plastic wrap that covers left over food?
As a left over from the True Hippie era, only succumbed
to ‘tuppaware’ a few years ago, it was a long resist to plastic, like some peoples that resist sex but find it extremely useful nevertheless πŸ™‚

pegs yes that’s the stuff. it’s called glad wrap here because of the brand “Glad” must have started it off in Oz

Thanks peeps! But here’s the killer, I worked on a project since late July last year that got suspended literally the first week of January. Why? Because small to mid size businesses are trying to survive and they can’t reach consumers the way Big Business can to convince them to pay more for safer products. For the last 4 years, I’ve sat in meetings where good old boys patted each others’ backs, made fun of environmental regulations after I literally wrote a book to help them navigate it. Nothing I ever say is convincing enough. What is? A lawsuit. Because… Read more »

The dark side of being a Fixer: hoarding old shit for “parts”. We have a closet full of non-functional contraptions that never see the light of day, because my boyfriend “could use this stuff someday!”

right?! so funny that it even says, “a small, clever tweak.” the woods around here are FULL of small, clever tweaks with barns and sheds and houses and yards even! chock full of Very Useful potential parts for something, someday. they were doing pluto in cap long before it was cool. πŸ˜‰

I know FOUR Virgo’s that will not throw anything away. My large shed has 10 stored suitcases from Virgo Voodoo Mamma that weigh ME down.
The other 3 are the same, will not let anything go as it may be of use sometime….sometime.
As a multi Sagg, ‘stuf’f makes me nervous.
For an Earth signs thro, it perhaps calms
them or gives a feel of abundance?

Pegs, Wail…… I am a Sagg and Scorp Rising Gem Moon, so WHY am I such a hoarder? πŸ™ I feel so overwhelmed, as I have so many rooms full of “stuff”. I’ve been selling my hoards on ebay on & off over the past year or so – the clearance at a time when I need the cash just feels so good πŸ™‚ OH is starting on the garage.
There’s something in this new paradigm that means second hand is not only good thrift but COOL.
