Pablo Picasso King of the Minotaurs

Pablo Picasso – King Of The Minotaurs

“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.”

“There are only two types of women – goddesses and doormats.”

Hmm, intense much? Imagine if Picasso had written a self-help guide.

So obviously art-historian peeps will enlighten me but i always feel like this pic is a self-portrait, that somehow Picasso related to the Minotaur concept.

He was, of course, a life-hungry Scorpio – today is his birthday – but he had Leo Rising (remember, Leo Rising always resembles a cat) and Moon in Saggo. It is the latter which probably saved him from being too fixed as had also four planets in Taurus – Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron and Pluto – all in the 10th House. How’s THAT for career endurance and longevity, huh?

So all that Taurus = King of the Minotaurs?  Thundering around in his own labyrinth?

Thoughts?

I’m one of a few admitting to liking his work, must say I studied some of them a long time to try & understand, was strongly drawn to them but puzzled & like others a bit repelled by his obvious macho persona. The minotoar drawings were in a touring exhibit in Brisbane Aust & there were a lot, like 30 or smthg, the technical excellence of his work is v impressive, they are mostly minotoar resting reclining etc with one or more women … so whats to like ??? I eventually felt I gained some insight into the depth of… Read more »

I was just thinking the other day, what kind of goddess do I want to be.
Certainly not the doormat kind.

Goddesses and doormats? Hmmm…sound like an unhealthy attitude towards women to me. :/

When I saw an exhibition with many many of his minotoar drawings, I must say I loooved them (but then I do love bulls, taurus on the 5th??) lol Did also notice the muse figures of his models, very objectified, but then that was the whole message I got from the minotoar series, how he saw the ‘beast nature’ of man emerge in the presence of female beauty … Never knew his astro, it all fits … the scorp, toro, sagg, leo Have also seen others of his paintings including, including the wonderful Guernica, and some of very hysterical women… Read more »

And yes I think the minotoar in his art always represented himself

I don’t think the Minotaur was particularly representative of Picasso or anything about him in particular. So I will illustrate with a story about painters. I knew an American guy of Spanish descent who was a painter, a bad painter actually. He idolized Picasso. He used to have a print of “Guernica” over his toilet, apparently so he could stare at it and study it at “convenient” times. I would occasionally alter it with miniscule changes that I’m sure he never noticed, but would completely change the work. Little changes like two dots in the eyeballs, third nostrils, etc. One… Read more »

What a fantastic story! I don’t entirely get the end with the Spanish painting and the girl stealing, but it was fun to read. You really do write well Charles.

Yes, famously a jerk when it comes to women BUT as a Scorpio (with a Sag moon no less) I get the extremism, I imagine all that Taurus just served to make him even more intensely extreme. No middle ground, where can one get some? I’d like to know.

Pretty sure I’ve had that and have so much Libra it’s ok when it comes to other people and situations. It’s just within myself I have issues, no grey area with my own psyche if that makes sense? Probably doesn’t haha.

Libraquarius

It probably sounds very Libran to say this, but people are who they are. If Picasso had not had some non-P.C. aspects to his character and been a complete bastard, he may not have created the work he did. I may not approve of what he did, for sure, but I think we can’t expect people to be absolutely perfect just to satisfy our needs and expectations when we’re in another era. Which is NOT to say I think the way he treats women is okay, it’s not, but he wasn’t there to meet our expectations, but the expectations of… Read more »

i know, i mean it doesn’t change the fact of their work. but from the point that i learn something unpleasant about them, it changes my admiration to something a little less. I don’t think one can leave one’s attitudes out of the work – i mean, you can’t separate the artist (/musician / thinker / businessman/woman) from their work. (Except the conceptualists tried pretty hard.)

this is more complex for me than i can fathom typing about on a blog. Plus i should be doing sth else atm so am a bit distracted…I am not expressing my views very clearly. and I do like & generally agree with what you have to say LA.

Also consider, the women who loved him were largely attracted because he was such a stinker. It takes two to tango, and they wanted to tango with him.

Unfortunately, “consent” issues in relationships, and in society, and with regards to gender inequality across time is more complex than taking two to tango.

Regarding his Art, Picasso was one of the first artists I was drawn, his work in terms of perspective. Cubism blew my young mind. Maybe also because I have same sun/mc .my merc and moon conjunct his own. Never looked at his toro coming through MM but yes now you mention, very obvious.

Piscean Closed For Renovation

my thoughts are, he had a really c*nty attitude about women. Yeah yeah picasso, but seriously ladies, doesn’t it taint your opinion of even the most out-there “geniuses” when it turns out they wouldn’t even spit on you if you were on fire? Because you were female? I can think of several other examples.

I did not know that; I listen to Betty Davis “They say I’m different” album ~ so that’s Miles Davis’ ex wife.
That’s beyond words… . I had no idea.
I actually thought she was HIS inspiration…

Women are half the population, or more. Yet, the (global) patterns of violence and inequality are disturbing to say the least. It actually angers me, and I have such a low threshold for violence (neptune trine ascendant / sextile sun…).

And Marvin Gaye & Ike Turner….the list goes on

Then there is Emotional Abuse.
Then there was the Toothless Tatooed FagHag that fractured my nose

she was in drag.

Do you believe they hated women, or do you think they felt superior? Sounds like fear to me they feared women and had insecurity issues.

my exhubby is a scorpio with a leo rising(yes the mane when long). Stubborn and overly oppionated.

ScorpioRising
ScorpioRising

What about a Leo with Scorpio Rising? I knew one once he was vain, self absorbed obsessed with his thinning hair, and big sunglasses (aging rockstar wannabe complex) he had weird secret strange fetishes and overseas “special” vacations. He was indeed an odd one, not in a good way either.

GeorgeSand
GeorgeSand

He is all things in a man (save his genius) that I run as fast as I can away from. Personally, Scorpio men turn me off. I once read that he preferred having sex with only women who had never had children. Ick.

Lauren

Out of the 7 women that factored most significantly in his life, 2 killed themselves and 2 went insane. Only one walked away voluntarily with her dignity intact, more or less.

Interesting factoid: His youngest daughter Paloma is a designer of perfume, jewelry and fashion. She has a fragrance called Minotaure.

GeorgeSand
GeorgeSand

He picked women who could play out his own craziness. I like Paloma. I always thought she was a class act.

Funny, I used to own a print of his called Californie. I gave to my then boyfriend as a sort of go away now present. Lol.

I agree. Madness attracts madness. (I need to remember that.)

yikes. Did he drive them mad?
that’s NOT a good track record. His art screams of mental instability I think he projected his demons on them.

well, unfortuneately sometimes it takes being a doormat before you become a goddess…

I mean dude, please….be quiet…

Steph

hah, exactly! it’s gross how he was really only thinking of men’s perception of women as things to look at (he WAS an artist) rather than actual living, breathing, human women with faults and all. good ole machismo at work…

I was thinking “He’s right. I’ve always been one or the other.” It took a lot of doormatting experience before I was ready to own my goddess-ness. Now, no one on earth is good enough for me. Its lonely at the top. 🙂

That Minotaur thing, so incredibly true! Thank you MM, now I know why I can’t handle the guy.
I know way more about Picasso than I would naturally as my dad is a Picasso freak. So heavy, ick. I bow down to his genius, but I walk out the door at the vibe I get from a lot of his work. Probably the doormat attitude flowing out at me from his work turning me off – along with the heavy fixed influence and all that bull.
