The Witch Moon

Liebeszauber (Love Spell) (1470s), artist unknown

f.y.i. if you did not know already, the Witch Holocaust was just getting going at about the time this picture was done. Malleus Maleficarum – easily the scariest and most sad book i’ve ever read in this life – was being written and would be published just a few years later. It was a best-seller.

There is SO much in this picture, the more you gaze at it.

The other day my 11 yro Gemini girl asked what it would take to get a girl “arrested” for witchcraft then and i was like, well; where do you start?

Having cats, having sex without marriage, having astrology charts, being left handed, having moles/beauty marks in certain bits of the body, not getting sick when everyone else gets the flu, being a subject of gossip, having dried herbs hanging up, being seen walking alone but talking to yourself, having money but you’re a woman with no visible means of support, being in someone else’s nightmare, being anorexic, provoking rape, never getting married, having a baby without marriage, being a midwife, bringing on a late period with herbs, not attending the church…

That is just off the top of my head.

Estimates on how many people (mostly women and girls) were killed in The Burning Times vary: they range from 60,000 to Nine Million.  Is there a memorial or a proper apology anywhere?

Too many comments.. have scanned but not read so apologies if I’ve missed anything brilliant! Relate? Of course.. indeed to many of those things as I’m sure many women do. I’m a past lifer from that place.. I AGREE! There have been discussions and apologies for indigenous and the hollocaust etc but you’re right MM.. not that I’m now rigorously seeking vindication… but there has been no apology and I don’t want to appear negative or sexist but the reasons are likely to be steeped in our patriachal system and also our flailing religious constructs and fear. Always fear! It’s… Read more »

I lived in a town in S-E Queensland where there were heaps of fundamentalist churches who prayed for alternative healers to die. They inspected our library for unacceptable books and were going to ask for the Council to ban them until our mild librarian went spare and threatened the whole town with ridicule. The local businesses boycotted the local newspaper when it ran horoscopes & eventually the editor ditched the horoscopes. I had the time of my life working as a Tarot reader in the Fortune Teller’s Tent (although I hate that term “fortune teller” but it was worth it… Read more »

In the US there are a lot of genealogical societies for people who can trace their ancestry back to the American Revolution, the Mayflower, the American Civil War (both sides), etc. These are usually pretty conservative and snobbish groups.

There is also a genealogical group for those who can trace their ancestry back to someone accused of, tried, or executed for witchcraft.

One thing to call a woman a witch, slam the door and off to the liquor store…
(that in itself would be grounds for separation)

Dizzy after reading that article. Inexplicably heinous and for centuries, and still the world fears female power and the worst of it is when women fear their own.

Why did we stop burning witches? Did we run out of them? Or we have just changed aim: now it’s young folk about to get some invisible mental illness and we drug and electro-shock till they stop doing what annoys psychiatrists!?!

I remember reading somewhere that the Salem witch trials only came to a halt when one of the accused tesstified on the stand that the Judge’s wife used to fly in and run the coven!

It was unclear if a perjury charge was subsequently laid.

The mission of church? To make all the lights go out and to light fires. All the monotheistic (the patriarchic archetype) religions were derogatory towards women but christianism went a step further. And the highlight of it, the Mariology, motherhood is sacred, sex is sin. The human body is sin. The woods, the rivers , the animals, the sky and all the stars are daemons. Religion of love and is nothing but love. When the people of europe (medieval times) were suffering from epilepsy, leprosy, asthma and other diseases, what the priests did? Put crotales around the necks of the… Read more »

theme of the comments resonates with another theme du jour in my household. My son has outright rejected religion, and I continue to urge him to try to discern the difference between “religion” (man-made) and “spiritual.” Usually I can keep these talks private between him and me, but we have a “situation” developing . . . an aunt has donated considerable funds to purchase church bells in memory of my father. Priest has asked my son to be there this weekend to be the first to “ring” them; I have asked him to do it for his grandfather, and ignore… Read more »

Interesting Inch. Daughter mentioned above was an atheist for a long time. I let her be as well as she had to explore such a personal thing as belief systems for herself. Not that we didn’t have values in our home which is what you seem to be instilling in your son as far as his grandfather goes. She eventually found her higher power thru nature as she said “something had to create all that beauty”. Guess that’s what Yosemite Nat’l Park does to a person. I don’t know. I’ve never been. Never the less, she just told me she’s… Read more »

Thanks, Sweetness. Yes, I am not wringing my hands, asking myself what I have done wrong, because I am thankful he has thought about these matters. I also know that teenagers “know it all” and your daughter is an excellent example of how life can change one’s beliefs. And one can also experience spirituality from an entirely intellectual point of view; this is not a bad thing. I found a lot of comfort though when I was young through connecting with “spirit”; I wish that my son might be able to experience that same comfort I received – but then… Read more »

I think it could be that Sweetpea. I consider myself an atheist, or maybe I should say agnostic as I do believe in things like spirits/ghosts and reincarnation. But I definitely don’t describe to any one religion… Anyway, I find it all quite fascinating too, and I want to take religious courses while in school (currently working on literature/ethics/writing classes). Especially Eastern religions!

Know what you mean Inch as far as the comforting connection. Over bible pages with pix of Jesus used to talk and cry to Him. It was “our secret”.

Then some come into the world and take a look around and ask “what is this bullshit?”

Perhpas the connection so naturally ingrained they just know something amiss..And of course as the world evolves one gets more daring in speaking their truth.

Hey Inch, that’s a tough position to be in. When loved ones die we have to confront who we share them with and how to share letting them go. Can be very difficult and I feel for you. At least your son has the passion to not be apathetic/ ambivalent about it, or so it sounds. Rejecting religion for spirituality is a craft in itself and can take a while to master.
Best wishes to all of you in this intense time. Xx

Women have been copping shit culturally since the beginning of freakin time. What prowincat said. Too easy to blame the church though, as the church was society. I don’t really see that much has changed really. We can no longer overtly demonise and prosecute women for being anything more than subservient underlings for the sexual empowement/convenience of men, well not officially, but I don’t see that attitudes have changed all that much. I think an apology is a grand idea. I also think there would be uproarious laughter from at least half the population if not many more. Yes but I think the interesting thing is the backlash against feminism and the rise of the Paris Hilton 20 something clones who put us back years. Who think it is cool to be a vacuous bimbo and think that behaving like that will get you taken seriously in the workplace or anywhere really. I fought to be taken seriously and now with one idiotic generation we are back to the 50s! And we STILL don’t get paid the same. Rant rant rant. Oh I would have been burnt at the stake for sure!

What kind of creature is the church? A killing machine. The only difference today is the method . Instead of killing the unbelievers they take vulnerable people and use their lives as a host. Everything from vernacular to radio station to self image, friendships, relationships, investment, careers, sex habits and even private thoughts are submitted to the way, the truth ( bah!) and the light ( more like the Right!) until you are a spiritless format for the contemporary church. Why has no one mentioned the extremely pointy sandals she’s wearing…? Odd painting. The boy looks like he’s lolling his cheek against the door an a very endearing way, like he’s drinking in the view of her, and she looks pregnant…then I notice the ‘added’ broom near the window. Odd painting! As if it’s had the ‘witchey bits’ painted in later to give it some kind of commercial ‘mystique’. On the blog topic though. From what i know of medieval and early renaissance art – she is depicted as the epitome of beauty – her rounded stomach is part of this, as is her small high breasts. The shoes are the wooden patterns which stood in for the ‘around the house’ shoes of the time. The scrolls flying round in the air I think would once have had writing on them, although with time many paint colours become fugitive and disappear. The dog is a symbol of fidelity. Can you imagine how many thousands of women were killed as ‘witches’. I read a number once, a fairly conservative amount, something like half-a-million or more from the Middle Ages right up until the early 20th century. Oh what a good way that was to get rid of intelligent, stupid, old, young, outspoken, dumb, too beautiful, too ugly, too sexy, married and unwanted, unmarried and wanted, pregnant or barren women that was. A terrible crime. The recent publicity surrounding the systematic abuse of women in developing countries or through sex-trafficking should be put into context – it’s just an ongoing… Read more »

Apology…that would be great…but this is the Church you’re talking about, they can’t even bring themselves to recognise child abuse by their clergy today…and fear, mistrust, subjugation of women remains institutionalised / the norm, until enough women tell em to get stuffed and then how does the male-run church get to control reproduction? any way i do go on.

Just to add some goss re church and abuse here…

I heard recently through some professionals in the field that peeps high up in the church (and of course in governments) have prevented certain treatments that are imperative for treating and understanding trauma caused by child abuse from becoming mainstream. Its because the church etc do not want more information coming to light and then the treatments becoming more acceptable and used as evidence in court.

This is toxic hateful nonsense that you post here! Organised sex crime ring? Provocative but oh-so-yawn-boring. Its ironic that the most vocal, virulent anti-christian/anti-papal sentiments are expressed by those who have predictably never been to mass, haven’t set foot inside a church outside of a friend’s wedding, never opened a bible and don’t know any christians.
