One Zeitgeist After Another

Stepen King aged 14 letter to prospective publisherThis is a letter from the author Stephen King to a prospective publisher, sent when S.K. was aged 14.

Obviously, he went on to become a stupendously successful author.  I love the vibe of this note.

Fourteen is an amazing age, astrologically, it’s the first Uranus transit to itself: Uranus sextile Uranus and Saturn opposes your natal Saturn as well. So think major quickening of your individuality, revolutionary impulses and of course Saturn tromping down hard usually in the form of parental restrictions/realization your parents are not God/demands of secondary school.

But leaving aside Saturn for a moment – PLEASE – the seeds of individuation are so strongly sown at 14. I’d say that if you analyzed your core interests and life stance at this age, it’s pretty close to the man-woman you will be later on. You’re also maybe experimenting with strong feelings of lust/love/attraction but unlikely to be hampered by the demands of an actual relationship lol. Perfect conditions for creative incubation.

Stephen King has one of the classic indicators of a writer who taps into the Zeitgeist enough to just sell shitloads of books; Mercury conjunct Neptune. Mercury conjunct any outer planet pretty much hooks your creative output/words into the Zeitgeist.

(J.K. Rowling has Mercury conjunct Uranus.)

He’s also got Moon in Saggo which a LOT of successful writers seem to have…not sure why. Maybe as they like the emo freedom to say what they want that fiction bestows?

It would be rude of me to talk of healing and drs to you, Ms. Study of grammar, if taught well, with a light and universal touch, may open your ears and eyes to some extra powers of the language. Challenge: find a knowledgable, not pedantic person. Those who dare break the rules, knowing what they are, and when those rules are confining, are honest teachers of our language. (Emails, blogs are not academic theses.) That person will give you the power to KNOW, and to therefore honour or break. That person will also adore what you bring them as… Read more »

i’ve been told my chart is awesome for writing though my grammar etc is terrible. have a great appreciation for the art none the less.
Saggo moon is good for escapist fantasy into other worlds, as much as pisces does rule a certain mysticism, saggo is much more to me than some puddle depth gym junkie. of which I have ever been let alone own sporting equipment.
hell yeah at 14 ,I exploded. uranus has this habit of blowing things up rather loudly. So much shit went down but utter carving the self in to creation was magical.

Ms, grammar is the reason for an editor…who should ask you, by the way, exactly what you meant, in case changing the grammar means changing your actual meaning.

Chronic fatigue at 13/14? An interesting and unique fact, at a highly “guessable” age, but not for that. I hope you were treated decently, respectfully and as an individual whose truth shone in a blaze. Though i’m guessing your symptoms showed otherwise.

I guess so.. though I feel it would be cheating to not understand the principals of the language, maybe this is a reflection of all the super nerd word types I know and feel intimidated by my lack of knowledge? I am too self absorbed pen style to write novels. My characters live in the world or in paintings. As for Chronic Fatigue story, sadly I was not. I always thought I was misdiagnosed actually. Infact it was so so spectacularly bad (which is not uncommon given the time/demographic- I had a weird case of it I am only sleuthing… Read more »

After putting on bill callahan’s apocalypse album for the millionth time since I got it I thought I’d test the synastry with artists who speak to you theory. I was also wondering if something may have triggered his apocalypse, Pluto maybe? Yes, he has moon in Sagg. All those horses and running away songs, there had to be some Sagg. But surprisingly he’s a mega Gemini. Sun, merc and mars. Venus and north node in taurus to add all that nature flavour (NN conj my merc and Venus, I’ll be your future bill!) Sun opp moon might account for his… Read more »

My Mercury is conjunct Neptune and Lillith. Ooh so I can write about drugs, dreams, illusions, pseudo-realities and sex.

Oh good.

I have been writing poems about the weather and the sea. I can see I’m going to have to get a grip and go harder 😀

I literally don’t recall that entire year of my life, at least on the surface. I am convinced I was on a rich inner journey though! I know all my peers were focusing on extreme partying but ‘fortunately’ that was impossible pour moi due to Chronic Fatigue and a subsequent bout of Depression. The last bit was top secret for ages though. In hindsight it was THE best thing that has ever happened to me, just didn’t feel that way at the time! I have Sun-Pluto in Scorpio natally so I believe that was my first ‘death of ego’ experience,… Read more »

I always felt S.K. just remembered his dreams/nightmares and got himself paid handsomely for sharing them with the rest of us!!!

I agree with Mr King – The obituary department is one of the best in any newspaper – Especially in broadsheets. I think funeral notices are also pretty cool…. even “ordinary” people have fascinating lives, too bad we often don’t find out / realise till after they’re gone.

I like the part of his story that goes that he threw away his manuscript for “Carrie.” His wife took it out of the garbage and sent it off to publishers and the rest, as they say, is history.

I just LOVE the precociousness of this letter. Adorable.
Yikes, I don’t even want to confess to the things I started getting up to when I was 14, but yes, you are so right Mystic, sudden leaps forward into brash and brazen (inner sense of) maturity.
And there’s not been an age since where I was more prolific as a writer. At 14-15 I just couldn’t stop. Pen in hand 24/7, words pouring out into margins, on bus tickets, napkins, masses of diaries… None of it was particularly good, but the productivity was up at least.

i lived entirely on english breakfast tea and cigarettes and wrote non stop from 14 to 16. wonder if this is some kind of hormone driven thing x

Like Lexi, wrote copiously. Also had Pluto opp. my Moon transit. Read 1984 for consolation. ‘Nuff said.

what would mercury conjunct saturn bring to writing?

not much?

discipline! something we more Neptunian writers would kill for!!

Me too! Saturn Conjuncts Mercury… was stressing about this one ’cause I am a writer… would hate to think work life was a waste 🙂

Here’s my further thoughts – yes discipline but also possibly playing it a bit safe with words? As in take from the Zeitgeist but make sure someone will pay for your work on completion too?

this is what i have too… do we count as plugged in to the zeitgeist? 😀

Great post Mystic! He captures your attention even though it is just a letter to the editor, a skill of (obviously) a genius writer! Just like you Mystic! 😯

I have Uranus Trining Mercury and 21 Sagg Neptune conjunct 22 Sagg MC ~ I have always been fascinated with great writers (although not a fan of S.K genre), I would love to write and write well. The Leo Socialite advice continues to ring in my ears… 😯 Not sure where to go with it yet… 😯

Happy Birthday !! Yummy cake 😀 Virtual cake – the most virtuous kind ! Hmm, well using my newly acquired powers of astrology (LOL ie: reading astrodienst) how about transmitting new, inspiring, unusual, awesome ideas in a very practical and level headed way. Or again with the Neptune thing – practical Mysticism ? Although from your Blog you are more interested in social justice (Sagg?) so maybe new and unusual ways of discussing/transmitting that ?!? Just trying to think of some great writers who did that but am stuck on the beastly trio of Sartre, Camus and DeBeauvoir. I LOATHE… Read more »

Aw, I love this! You can tell he’s trying to sound very grown-up (and succeeding, really! Most adults I know aren’t this articulate). I’ve always loved his short stories, although most of his novels have left me underwhelmed.

My Mercury (Scorp, 8th) is conjunct my Uranus (Sag, 9th), but it’s pretty lost–they’re 9 degrees apart. Maybe I can lasso the Zeitgeist or something.

T

Whoops, that should be loose, not lost.
