Home Shrine Maintenance Tips

“How are you Miss MM??

I love your spunk, intellect and writings. I am an avid subscriber and I recently bought your Uranus In Aries Confidential and completely agree that we are going through a universal shift. In sync with that shift I have decided to make a Shrine/alter in my bedroom.

A place to meditate, bless, cast spells and contemplate life. I also want to use it as a place to manifest my dreams and create energy.

I am not a believer of one religion but I do believe in spirits and a universal code or connection that can be tapped into. I draw on astrology, Buddhism, and parts of voodoo both in scripture and symbolism.

I don’t want to disrespect any of the traditions by mixing the gods together or mixing up spiritual energies. Do you have advise on any type of shrine I can create or point me to a book that may give me some ideas?

Thanks,

Gemini 1001…”

Dear Gemini 1001,

Wow what a brill idea! I love your vibe. Personally, I think Feng Shui is ALWAYS the best starting point.  For instance, crystals count as an “earth cure” so you want to place them wisely. Red is Fire – as are candles, obviously – and amazingly stimulating so be careful where you’re putting it…You get the shrine in the right bit of your bedroom and find out what colors/elements work there first…and then you elaborate…You can do all sorts of things with it. I don’t have a shrine as such but i’ve got a big mood board, that’s constantly evolving with where I am at.

That question re clashing spiritual energies is interesting. I don’t know.  I was told years ago NEVER to have the I-Ching and the Tarot in the same house as they’re a different ministry of magic or something. But really, do modern pantheists really give a fuq about such things?  Denise Linn has some gorgeous thoughts on altars in her books & I think there is some stuff in the HouseWitch A to Z as well.

OH MY GOD We should concoct different shrine ideas for each Sun Sign?  Or go with your Moon?  The flowers and colors etc in the Luna Luxe are a good start…

Does anyone remember the shrine that one of the older performers had set up in the movie Buena Vista Social Club? It was African in origin and it was fascinating listening to this man talk of how he honoured this shrine with food, drink and offerings. He had such a kind face too.

I am surrounded by so many beautiful gatherings of things. I now need to concentrate on the altar within. Love the term Pantheist. Thankyou. This post is full of such enlightened intelligent people.

My altar (which I haven’t made yet) should pay respect to Kwan Yin, to Jesus and Buddha as Ascended Masters.
My brother is a guide and soul group member. Also San Shin the Korean Mountain God/Goddess riding a Tiger (I am Tiger and have San Shin as a guide) would be a nice picture to place there.
The right eye of Horus as a symbol of the Sun and protection as I am a Leo. The Scorpio Moon? I will use Moonstone. Complete with candles, incense, emerald green, royal blue, iridescent purple silk, then gold and fruit!!

Currently don’t have a specific alter but reading these posts I realize I have the right tools and knick knacks to create a real nice place to center my energy. My leo moon will definitely benefit from a large mirror, some diamonds and sheaves of wheat. Thanks Mystic and others for the great inspiration!

An small old wooden dynamiters box. It encompasses a plinth, a cavern and beautiful drawers. Like others, it is where I gather objects of beauty; feathers, skulls, leaves, stones, pieces of bark, Kwan Yin is there, and Buddha, and incense, and a potted orchid. I like that it refers to the portable. It travels well and particular treasures are permanently in it’s drawers. My saggi/neptune first house thing.

I had a funny little stool/table for years that I picked up on day at trash and treasure. It never quite fitted into my house until one day I clicked, and it became my shrine. I have Buddha, St Mary of the Cross, ant a simple tea light candle holder on mine. It’s simple and pure so I can rest my mind. Elsewhere in my flat I have nests and burrows that are shrines to certain activities. Like crochet or cooking.

i personally was touched by the way the japanese people use their shrines in the houses and apartments – not so much the old traditional family shrines dedicated to family ancestors but the entrance shrine which is linked to the changing seasons so that it may have a statue, flowers, painting, hanging, prayer, food or other personal items which celebrate the time of year. in many homes these are update if not daily at least weekly. i have never seen a country so crazy about flowers. and if you go visiting you either take or are served beautiful little mochi… Read more »

Thank you for the nice imagery queenbean. I always have fresh flowers and foliage throughout my house – it lifts the energy of the room, looks beautiful but is also a lovely reminder of the seasons. Great custom to clean and decorate the machines. Had not heard about that before. Love it. We would be busy here with tractors, boat, mowers, and vehicles of various kinds, not to mention the power tools!

I like this idea of having an altar close to where I prepare food, to remind me of the sacredness of feeding the spirit within with intent. Thanks. I’ll get on to this tomorrow.

I am quite dissatisfied with my home altar. I always wanted to upgrade to a proper butsudan. All I have is an old standup bookcase with my little tabletop butsudan sitting in it, the one I used to hang on the wall. But I’m afraid to buy a new one, there is a superstition in my sect that when you buy a new upgraded butsudan, you will move to a new, better home soon. When you make a new altar for your spiritual practices, the universe will find a new, upgraded place for you too. But I hate to move.

How very interesting, Charles…two of my oldest friends gifted me this great bamboo ‘meditation’ table which quickly became my altar. Within a few months I upgraded living quarters from an apt in seedy neighborhood to my beautiful home by the water. Toro Moon 4

That is one of the Three Treasures, “establishing the Sanctuary of The Law” in the sense of buddhist “law” of the universe (I see this as relatively pantheistic Cosmic Law stuff). When you set up an altar, you are establishing a small symbolic sanctuary. It is the spiritual space where you devote yourself to enlightenment. Doing this will also establish yourself as part of the Sanctuary, and the world will “enshrine” you in return. Or so the doctrine goes. I have always been embarrassed about my poor butsudan and butsugu (altar furnishings). I’ve had the same poor altar for 20… Read more »

poverty is only and always of spirit…in the mind and heart. Maybe your lack of material prosperity is due to the fact that you have not imbued your altar furnishings with honor, but judge them as you judge yourself…unworthy and somehow not good enough. Generosity of spirit is the only true wealth…

Well, v.r., my butsudan is modest but it that doesn’t make it any less than a big ones at the temples. I’ll show you one of those: http://www.flickr.com/photos/knobbyknees/85917226/ Wow, that’s like a 20 inch bell, you can’t just order one of those from the buddhist supplies store, you have to contact the foundry and have them make one to order. I remember there was a rift at one temple where a priest got the idea he wanted a solid gold bell cast at a famous foundry. Some of the temple members disliked the idea of such an extravagant expenditure, and… Read more »

agree Ms. So interesting to hear what other people have in their homes re shrines & altars etc. I don’t have anything formally dedicated to dedication. But thinking about it my whole house, garden and its secluded location in the bush is like a shrine perhaps. Or a sanctuary for a pantheist 🙂

given what i know of your work it sounds like earth itself is an altar for you and creation. Beautiful. I have kind of moved on from very literal shrines or spiritual images and tend to create them around me in clusters as such, its less a reflection of astrology than it is my personal taste and love. Outside on my wee balconette I have made a potted area so its now a herb shrine. Have numerous dangling things out there and a couple of small statuettes. sounds lovely Ms. You seem blessed with a powerful and confident way of expressing yourself and your creative aesthetic. Do you ever wish for a bigger garden? Amazing what you can grow on a balcony tho’ if you choose the right plants and top qual potting mix. That is the wonderful thing about gardens – they can work beautifully at any scale – the principle is the same. Pardon my ignorance but is a censor an oil burner or flame holder of some kind?

Ms.

kind words Nat. i just try to honour my head. I think we all do. xx
yes would love a bigger garden, one day. when I grow up.
I love herbs too, so practical. I re-create this garden wherever I go. even if its just a window box in the city.
Censor is for burning blends of herbs and resins so yes you are correct.
it’s full of soil and charcoal blocks so I just throw the blends on there. its very strong smoke that filters through cut shapes in turkish design motif to purify spaces while contained. churches have ones that swing.

My flat is just too small for feng shui. I have the content of a two-bedroom townhouse stuffed into a small inner-city one-bedder. I ‘de-stuffed’ before moving into this place but I can still hardly find room to do salute to the sun. i wish it were otherwise, spatially challenged.

Pisces moon–If I had a shrine, it would quickly become covered with all manner of crap, and then it would get dusty, and then I’d feel guilty about letting it get dusty but still wouldn’t clean it, and then I’d forget about it and it would get buried in laundry, and then I’d uncover it sometime when my Mars in Virgo is kicking my ass back into gear and I’d think “what is all this junk?” and I’d throw it away. Love the shrine/alter idea for focusing thoughts/dreams. I have a coffee table that holds the kind of homey magic energy for me that I can use. Will also create a shrine inside my body temple/mind/body/heart/spirit/soul so I can carry it around with me. Wonder what that will feel/look like ? Must meditate to create. Been negative and scattered at work. The purpose of a shrine is to create a sacred space, set apart from the mundane, which helps us to evoke that place within that allows us to feel more centered and still, at home in the sacred space of our own skin. Whatever has meaning to us, whatever helps support this journey within is appropriate. I have Moon in Leo, so does mean my shrine should consist of a large mirror, 3 different sized combs, hair gel and a face mask? In all seriousness, my Guru was/is a Leo when in the body, and he focused much of his study and time on seeking the Universal Truth within all religions (Holy Trinities, the Blue Pearl, Law of Attractions, Law of Karma etc). So I think it’s perfectly fine, and definitely not offensive to the beings themselves to have Christ, Kali and Medicine Buddha sitting side by side. Good points Nate. I have a pix of Buddha right next to my Libran grandaughter with my other things. Her pix is actually bigger than his but sure he doesn’t care?

To me, Buddha is a state of consciousness anyway, not just a person. For this reason I had been told to always keep the Buddha pix higher than all others but I just haven’t gotten to that and besides, is that outer recognition really so important to what comes from the inner?

Ooh, interesting topic. I’ve heard different things regarding the mixing of beliefs and practices in one place or setting. My aunt is a very hippy, New Agey type who thinks of herself as spiritual, but doesn’t strictly follow one path. I once went shopping with her and we went into this “curiosity” shop, that was largely a New Age book and gift store. I instantly felt very comfortable there, surrounded by so much earthy and positive energy. I never could get into the habit of going to a particular place at a particular time to do ritual type things. I’m not a big believer that crystasl do much, besides look pretty, but I do have this tiny quartz that I usually carry with me in whatever bag I’m carrying, along with a Canadian penny (from 1971), and a tiny pink knitted baby sock. I’ve worked closely with crystals for over a decade now since I discovered I had some sort of communication at some sort of unseen level. Never quite worked it out. But I’ve never held to the view that each crystal has one particular energy – it’s like a generic energy with individual crystals within that generic group expressing their own communication to those who are drawn to them. I found this out when I used to sell crystals at markets and watch people fish through, say, a bowl of rose quartz tumbled stones until they found “the right one”. So… Read more »

Interesting that you say people look through for the right crystal. The one I have was given to me, so I didn’t so much “find” it when I first got it. It just “came” to me, in a way. Is that common?

I think crystals can come to you any which way, to be very honest. You can get drawn to a crystal or someone can get one and feel the urge to pass it on to you. I know I’ve bought some and wondered why, then felt I had to pass them on to someone else. Other times, they’ve sat there quietly and suddenly started calling me so I’ve started working with them. And like you, there’ve been many times when I suddenly get an iimage of a crystal and start searching for it and feel the pressure to keep searching… Read more »
