Rarely do i read of a book and immediately go scampering off to order it – i mean, honestly, how many dull books are there? Isn’t reading supposed to be a pleasurable leisure pursuit? – but this brill review at Phantasmaphile had me at “Leonora.”
Leonora Carrington (an awesome Aries) is one of my fave artists ever – and one of the characters in this book is based on her friend, my all-time fave artist Remedios Varo.
The Hearing Trumpet was first published in 2004 (when Carrington was 87, how’s that for an awesome Uranus Return – going from being fabulous surrealist painter to brill novelist?) and this is a reprint.
Excellent Aries Surrealist Artist Quote: “I don’t have time to be anyone’s Muse.”
Amazon: “The Hearing Trumpet is the story of 92-year-old Marian Leatherby, who is given the gift of a hearing trumpet only to discover that what her family is saying is that she is to be committed to an institution. But this is an institution where the buildings are shaped like birthday cakes and igloos, where the Winking Abbess and the Queen Bee reign, and where the gateway to the underworld is open. It is also the scene of a mysterious murder. Occult twin to Alice in Wonderland, The Hearing Trumpet is a classic of fantastic literature that has been translated and celebrated throughout the world.”
Phantasmaphile: “..Early on in the novel, Marion is put into an old folks home, which is run by a cultish, regimented couple who follow the teachings of the Well of the Light Brotherhood. It soon becomes clear that Marion and her new friends must revolt against their cruel keepers. Carrington tells this tale by interweaving both classical- and her own invented mythology, often drawing upon images from fairytales and legends. To say more would give too much away, though I will mention a nun obsessed with erotic mysticism, a bee pond, and the Holy Grail figure prominently. Scrumptious…”
Line from the Book: “Darling, don’t be philosophical, it doesn’t suit you, it makes your nose red.”
