Aries Ain’t Nobody’s Muse

Leonora Carrington novelRarely do i read of a book and immediately go scampering off to order it – i mean, honestly, how many dull books are there?  Isn’t reading supposed to be a pleasurable leisure pursuit? – but this brill review at Phantasmaphile had me at “Leonora.”

Leonora Carrington (an awesome Aries) is one of my fave artists ever – and one of the characters in this book is based on her friend, my all-time fave artist Remedios Varo.

The Hearing Trumpet was first published in 2004 (when Carrington was 87, how’s that for an awesome Uranus Return – going from being fabulous surrealist painter to brill novelist?) and this is a reprint.

Excellent Aries Surrealist Artist Quote: “I don’t have time to be anyone’s Muse.”

Amazon: “The Hearing Trumpet is the story of 92-year-old Marian Leatherby, who is given the gift of a hearing trumpet only to discover that what her family is saying is that she is to be committed to an institution. But this is an institution where the buildings are shaped like birthday cakes and igloos, where the Winking Abbess and the Queen Bee reign, and where the gateway to the underworld is open. It is also the scene of a mysterious murder. Occult twin to Alice in Wonderland, The Hearing Trumpet is a classic of fantastic literature that has been translated and celebrated throughout the world.”

Phantasmaphile: “..Early on in the novel, Marion is put into an old folks home, which is run by a cultish, regimented couple who follow the teachings of the Well of the Light Brotherhood.  It soon becomes clear that Marion and her new friends must revolt against their cruel keepers.  Carrington tells this tale by interweaving both classical- and her own invented mythology, often drawing upon images from fairytales and legends.  To say more would give too much away, though I will mention a nun obsessed with erotic mysticism, a bee pond, and the Holy Grail figure prominently.  Scrumptious…”

Line from the Book:  “Darling, don’t be philosophical, it doesn’t suit you, it makes your nose red.”

That amazes me because I had heard of Varo 5/6 yrs ago, and nobody in my circle knew of her. Amazing. Have you seen any of her work up close and personal? I’ve never had the opportunity. But I DID see some of Francis Bacon’s stuff, who I also love. It’s big, colorful, dark, and looks like the night sky outside of an airplane, being just about the cloud cover, or inside of a volcano. Exactly what you’d imagine.

What drew you to her work?

It’s scary.

And yet, it’s strange how often people take things I say or watch things I do and make enormous changes in their lives because of it. Entirely unintentional on my part.

I’ve placed too many limits on myself but I’m always ready to encourage others.

Instant love, thank you for being the only site ever to go from Lucky Luke (my oddball imaginary love interest as a strange gawky child) to Leonora Carrington – she was aristocratic/v.wealthy daughter of industrialist in the Carla Bruni mould but gave it all up to be free and artistic. LOVE.

I would love to get this book for my Gem Mother… she might be slightly miffed that it’s about old people (my mother fears age more than anything… everything is a daily lament of the aging process in the mirror… not being able to read books without glasses. Having naps in front of the TV when she has TASKS TO DO!, etc etc)
The line from the book is something that my mother would say (in jest) and thoroughly enjoy!

She is also going deaf and went through a strong phase of “You are talking softly DELIBERATELY so I won’t know what is going on!!”
(my father is very soft of voice)

It is a brilliant novel. I am utterly inspired by the friendship between Carrington and Varo. One of the things I most love about this site, Mystic… Your incredible use of Varo paintings. I have loved them for a long time as a vague sort of gorgeousness but your use of them in astrological context helps me understand deeper layers.
