Sun Sign Survey: The Book Bashers

Filed in Horoscopes

Diagram - How To Open A New Book

Over the years, my friend Not-The-Typical-Virgo has sometimes glimpsed me reading and sensing a disturbance in the force, i have looked up to see her agape with horror.

“What….(pause whilst she struggles to regain composure)…are…you…doing…?”

So, okay, several of my books (the ones i have actually read as opposed to purchased on a self-improvement-intellectual-brainiac-i-fuqing-well-WILL read- -this-so-THERE whim) are dog-eared and with vegemite or butter stains on some pages. And even though i have Mars in Virgo, this does not bother me at all. I see it as the sign of a well-read book.

But I know some peeps who treat every book as though it was   The Book Of Kells.

So, citing your Sun or Mercury sign, do you treat books like merde or with reverential awe?

I’m going to blame this on my Mercury in Aries…”Never force the back…” Pffft. How about you?

My boyfriend is a Leo with Merc in Cancer- he handles his books with extreme care because someday he wants to pass them on to his grandchildren. I am a Cancer with Merc in Leo and I dogear my books and highlight them and throw them and keep them on the floor and whatever because they are my books and I love them dearly but damn, they’ve gotta be able to take a beating. I am just not a gentle person.

Aquarpio
Aquarpio

Sun Aquarius. I always try to keep them nice and then something will happen and they’ll go from brand new to totally beat up in an instant and then I stop being so careful…. Actually, this often the same for my clothing, shoes and purses but I’ve gotten much better about repairs and dry cleaning to those things.

I’m a virgo and it took me a very long time to realize that knowing a lot of facts and being glued to books DOESN’T make you smart. It makes you limited and only able to discuss a handful of things that aren’t really relevant to your life or even to your career. Having social skills, doing interesting things or creative things with what you know, just being funny or fun, being dynamic etc show a greater scope of intelligence…. no, they just show you are a well adjusted individual who values the right things. Leo Sun, mercury in Cancer – I handle my books with reverence, and distinguish between hard and soft cover books. I have been collecting books for over 40 years, and though a lot of them are paperbacks, they’re mostly still in good condition. I used to buy hard cover copies of my favourite books, as when I loaned out the paperback copies, they went missing and the hard covers (if loaned at all) were generally returned. These days I buy hard cover first editions of novels by favourite live authors (a lot of my old favourite authors are deceased). I… Read more »

I agree totally. I’m a book smeller from way back. A friend of mine thinks of books as information & ideas only – she took to e-books instantly & thinks attachment to the physical objects containing those ideas is silly. (Astonishingly, she’s a Libra – but heavy on the intellectual side of Libra, not the sensory pleasures side, I guess.) A Cancer friend of mine loves to write in books & pass them along. She loves to get books that are written in, too – it creates a dialogue with other readers for her. I really like that about her,… Read more »

p.s. that last comment was actually a response to a lovely post by empress about the sensualness of a book. There was a website blip because I was posting too much & the comment ended up here. (It’s true – this topic is so compelling to me, I keep wanting to talk about it. Love love love books.)

Sun in Libra, Mercury in Gemini I like to keep books looking good, but I get through so many the reading habit got too expensive so I get them from the library now. I do get a bit miffed when people before me have circled page numbers or folded pages to mark their spot. Get really upset with my daughters if they leave their books on the floor to be stood on or if they drew on them when they were little. They got a lecture about looking after them and that books were a knowledge gift and very precious.… Read more »

Aqua Sun, Gem Moon, Uranus in Gem: treat my books better than my clothes or food. Spend most disposable income on them. Wouldn’t have a ebook reader; love the feel of each book, it’s cover art; it’s typeface, everything.
No surprise here, right?

Anne Fadiman wrote a book of essays called Ex Libris: Confessions of a common reader – and in that she discusses how people treat books – whether they are ‘courtly lovers’ – those who treat all books like the Book of Kells – or whether you are a ‘carnal lover’ of books in an essay called Never Do that to a Book. Also a wonderful essay about the intimacy of ‘marrying libraries’ – when in your relationship do your books start to cohabit? It is available as a podcast some place on the net – and is delightful

Mercury, Sun, Venus, Mars in Virgo. I kind of just throw my books around. Sometimes I leave a huge pile next to my bed and completely soak them when I knock over my cup at night. I collect them like crazy, and sometimes I even read them. When that happens I don’t really give an F about maintaining their condition at all. I have been known to use anything handy as a bookmark including something that is dirty and including other books. If nothings around I usually just leave them spread-eagle pages-down which is apparently a huge sin.

I wish I could be more religious about books but I need them too much to develop an idolic relationship with them.

Does anyone have precious shelves and vases for their daily vitamins? or staples like flour and sugar? Ok, so the advanced souls on this site have probably left wheat and sugar behind with hypercolour tees……

BTW, the ultimate death?- a library wall of books falling on me.

My books are completely covered with personal annotations in the margins, key passages are under-lined, tiny pieces of artwork , flowers and ferns pressed between the pages…

These books are MINE.

They are filled with grains of sand, thumbprints, food stains, and—depending on the type of book—lots of underlining.

And I also have the bedside stack of books that I bought thinking they were exactly the thing I should read, but never did…. So those are more or less pristine.

mystic you’re so entertaining. hahahah… sensing a disturbance in the force…. hahaha. re: books, cappy sun, I just open them and read them. I hate it when the book won’t lay flat so, yes, I will subject the binding to my will… I have a feeling taurus asc plays into this, as I am a bit disheveled about “orderliness” but I do take excellent care of my things. I like to have them for a long time. I am rarely the one to break or damage my stuff, usually it’s someone else I’ve kindly let borrow any given item.

Sun and Merc conjunct Cancer Aqua Asc Love books, could spend hours in the library or bookstore. Tend to read a lot, but almost entirely non-fiction to satisfy my need to know *everything* before I die. 😛 When it comes to buying new books, one part of me wants to buy them pristine, without a mark or crease. Sometimes though I end up buying the ones with the smashed corners or torn dust jackets because I worry nobody else will want them and that they’ll end up in some tragic, dingy warehouse never getting to fulfill their book destiny. Also love to buy books because they’re cool looking or have beautiful artwork. The older the better too. I have a strange fascination with really old textbooks when they have the previous owner’s notes in the margins, it’s like stepping back in time. Ahhh, books….

Mercury in Virgo. Born a bookworm. The amount of things one absorbs through books, all sorts of them, has always nourished me. Some books are pristine and I intend to keep them that way. Some come with their own characteristics already, since I like perusing all kinds of bookshops. Some have underlinings, highlights, my rants; some are absolutely bare. I decided a long time ago not to be anal with my books as they’re MINE; I’ll do with em as I see fit, according to individual book. It’s a relationship I can return to time and time again. I too have Mercury, Sun in Virgo and Pisces Moon. I love books especially hard book, collector’s copies. If I intend to take notes or write in them I’ll buy a paperback book for that purpose. When I lived in Prague I bought children’s fairy tales and ghost stories in Czech since that is the only language that I picked up easily besides French. I’m a bookworm, some of my books are marked in, some are markless, most are dog-eared, and I’ve escaped into books when my life wasn’t to my liking. Mercury in Aries opposite Uranus in the 3rd- I treat books like tools. They’re written in, underlines, dogeared, highlighted, broken spines, post-it notes, etc…Many planets in the 8th house and a 2nd house Pluto- I don’t have much attachment to “things.”

Sun & Mercury both Virgo, & yet, I like to devour books. I break the backs. I dog-ear the pages. I stuff them in handbags. I want to get really cozy & up-close with a book, & I don’t mind how it looks. The words are still there! That is all I care about! (Oh, but I am very careful with other people’s books.)

Kataka Sun – Gemini Mercury

Books that I use for study do tend to be underlined with an occasional note.

Otherwise, my books are well-preserved.
When I read a book I have purchased, I stash the dust jacket and cover the book in a stretchy fabric book cover to protect it.
Once I have read it and decided to make it part of my permanent collection, I cover the dust jackets with a mylar protective cover.

Sun Scorpio/Mercury Scorpio battered and well loved is how I like them. My books are precious, hate, hate lending them and not getting them back, I see each one as an investment but I don’t mind what condition they’re in as long I can see the words.

My father Pisces Sun/Pisces Mercury likes to leave books in places for other people to find or give them away. He reads loads but owns none.

I love my books. I keep them crisp and clean. No scribbles, stains or creases.
However I do like to lightly mist their pages with one of my sweet or spicy perfumes. It makes me happy : )
No loaning as I consider books as a very personal treasure. I shudder at the thought of someone even BREATHING all over its pristine pages. I enjoy buying books for friends though. There is nothing finer than shopping for new books. It turns me on.

Trust me when you have worked as a librarian in a public library like I used to – you get to see it all. Every imaginable act of vileness towards books and then some. You just couldn’t imagine what some people think is an OK way to treat books. Since I know what people are capable of – I don’t often borrow books from a public library and when I do NOT EVER read them in bed. *germ -phobe – shudder*

Odette-in-Libra
Odette-in-Libra

I use the public library a lot – I couldn’t possibly afford to own all those wonderful books.
A few years ago I started wiping down every single library book I borrowed with a disinfectant cloth & a damp paper towel. Then I dry it. It’s a ritual. If I don’t do that, everything that touches the book ends up smelling strongly of urine.
(My Virgo planets shudder but the rest of them just shrug & cope.)

Just thinking…what happens once more peeps start using e-book readers? Can’t quite pass them round (‘hey, does your Kindle have 3G? If not, let me Bluetooth this book to you’). And if you drop it in the bath it’s finished.

I’m open minded and all and there are great benefits to using e-readers but it just won’t FEEL the same. No page corners to turn down. No booky smell. My multi Piscean self screams: NOOOO!!!

Sun in Gemini and Mercury in Cancer. I ADORE books. I adore them in the bath, on the toilet, while eating spaghetti with meat sauce, while swimming…I will read whilst doing any number of other things, but my favourite thing in the whole world to do is to read whilst lying in the bath. Me ..well i’m a complete book snob. They like a fine wine and must be handled with care. I take complete objection to a folded corner, notes or any highlighting within. I am most put out if find a library book in that condition. Lending out my books is now very rare and comes with guidance notes of how to care for and return.

Yes I love books… passionately, reading on line is often a trial and really not for me. Me i’m a book snob, happily.

Leo with virgo all through the chart loves them to death. . . tries to keep them well cared for – travelling with book inside a bag. . . but inevitably spills chocolate soy milk all over it or gets rained on during a walk in a thunderstorm and the thing gets waterlogged. . . terrible feelings of guilt follow. . . it’s the same with CDs. . . respect, veneration, but ultimately, they get destroyed.

Oh Wow, I’m a Virgo and I treat my books about as good as my bathroom mat. I underline, highlight, dog-ear, bottom-corner fold, prop open, leave outside in the rain, etc. The more marks, the more charming. My sun in Leo is a little careless and lazy, so there’s an inner battle with my Mercury in Virgo that wants things pristine.
