Astro-Beauty: Dressing Tables

1920s Elegantly Dressed Woman Sitting At Desk Reading A Letter By Moody Window Light

Does anyone still do old school dressing tables?

As in a super-Venusian alter/stage set/preparation post from which to take on the world?

Or has the more pristine and seclusive scenario of the bathroom mirror/basic replaced it?

I went looking for one to get my daughter when she turned 10 and nada. Is it just too retro?

Have any of you got a dressing table that you sit in front of, gaze into the mirror and order your thoughts?

And if not, would this be an enticing idea or just nouveau naff? And please quote your Venus sign.

Venus in Pisces- YES I love spending hours getting ready, and I have a weakness for fine makeup and perfumes/lotions. My aqua sun makes sure its disoranized and disarrayed, but in a fab way. The top shelf has a specific spot for each thing, but on the actual table part, it’s a beautiful mess. Its hard to keep things in drawers if i use them everyday. I believe that you can look at someones things and decipher a lot about about their story and telling an interesting one is important to me.

Venus in Libra; I don’t mind the idea of one, but I’ve always most enjoyed getting ready/putting on my makeup outside in natural lighting as the sun rises. Something about being connected to nature instead of being in a sterile environment makes the whole affair more like a ritual than a process, and I love that. Not to mention the feeling of breeze on my skin and the smell of dew-laden grass…

I think dressing tables are nice as long as they don’t hog my whole room. And as long as the table isn’t too full with kitschy things like smaller mirrors with a lot of glitter on them. So if they are basic and small I like it. 🙂

Well, I wouldn’t mind one. After having read the stories, I’ve always known every since I was a kid to get a ‘clean’ one, coz mirrors from days of yore have always twinged at my pisces moon. So as long as the mirror part is sorted, I think my psychic field will let me know if it’s a go or not. It willl need to have a kind mirror, its approach soft and cuddly, coz despite having Leo Venus, my sun is in Virgo, so very critical of self. I guess Leo Saturn will have to keep learning to develop… Read more »

What great stories! None here, but that I love them. Had a white one with a beige tufted satin stool in my last bedroom setup. Loved the ritual of sitting there readying myself, but wasn’t large enough so sold. Would love one of those expansive art deco tables, painted white. I’m not fancy, fussy, or frilly…an rather streamlined and natural in my sensibilities…but seriously love those things. So feminine. And I love to see my perfumes, lotions, and rhinestone bits & bobs on them. 🙂 Libra rising, Venus in Gem conjunct Cancer sun. Interesting about the Neptune/Pisces biz & mirrors…my… Read more »

Sun in Virgo,Venus in Libra I love dressing tables. I didn’t have one for many years, then inherited my great great grandmother’s dark wood Victorian one. It has a central mirror and three small drawers. The mirror frame has wonderful swirly carved bits, handy for hanging necklaces. After my mum died, I inherited her Edwardian oak dressing table, which was originally my great grandmother’s. It has lots of drawers, and little shelves on either side of the mirror to put candlesticks. I’m thinking of rearranging my bedroom this week, and moving the Edwardian one from the spare room for a… Read more »

Venus in Cancer….

Love my dresser, huge old style round mirror, covered in perfume and make-up and jewelry (even though I don’t wear jewelry). My father did it up and it was always in my parents room and I would stand with my mum and get ready in front of it when I was a kid, raid it for lipstick and play dress-ups. Then they bought a new one (new being again, antique – because yeah, it’s impossible to find them these days) and gave it to moi!

Libra sun and moon. White vintage dressing table covered in fragrances! I love it so much!
It was given to me by an ex’s mum who had it in the spare room for ages. Its a bit impractical with small drawers that constantly get stuck.
Most of my girlfriends dont have a dressing table but people always comment on mine – its my favourite piece of furniture.

Wow, this post has been impressive, makes me realise how much feeling can be stored in an object. Especially sentimental to mothers of girls and great unit for storing resentful souls too.. :O Now I kind of want one too. My dream bathroom would have an ante room for my imaginary dressing table and it would be my lush girly space near my walk-in robes with a small couch for a friend to sit at while you get ready. It would have to be a really practical but beautiful dressing table!! With a high solid stool to lean on while… Read more »

cap sun/aqua rising/pisces moon/venus pisces I have always had a dressing table and can’t imagine not having one in my room. Mine is usually pretty messy with earrings/lipsticks and assorted stuff out of my handbag. Unfortunately it has also become the landing place for all manner of other crap – when my kids ask where to put things that they need to give me (school notes, things that need my attention, assorted stuff they can’t make a decision about…) I usually tell them to put it on my dressing table. Sun and Venus in Taurus!

I would LOVE a dressing table. They’re so old fashioned!! So very Victorian and so full of hope. I never had one as a child, but I really wanted one and still want one. I just don’t know where I’d put one. D:
I’d love to have one that’s gold and white with a big mirror that tilts and lots of drawers.

It’d be cool if it had a big counter area so that I could stand on it like that scene from The Little Mermaid.
Not that I’m an evil octopus woman…

Sun in Cancer, Venus in Cancer.

No dressing tables for me.
I deserve – nay, *demand* – a dressing ROOM.

With daylight bulbs and unbroken expanses of floor-to-ceiling mirror and multiple shallow drawers for my rainbow’s worth of nail polish and eye shadow and jewellery. Space for days for arranging clothing by category and colour. Also, everything must be transparent so I can see all my pretties all at once and make an informed decision when frouffing for the day ahead. Um, Virgo Moon in case you were wondering.

It will be mine. Oh yes, it WILL be mine.

Venus in Aries, Lib rising. I have a dressing table – antique-y slightly deco one. It’s beautiful but more of the slightly practical small chest with a mirror type than the really indulgent ones with several mirros and a seat. I rarely wear make-up, nor contemplate myself in its mirror, but I love it. And where would one stash the treasures/ photos/ candles/ oils/ books/ shells/ eye pillows without it?? Surely bedside table not enough? (And in my case, mantelpiece & bedside table & dressing table & chest of drawers only just manage the job) I do aspire to minimalism… Read more »

I have a white, wooden, antique-style dressing table and antique chair (not matching, but both elegant, understated) that I bought 3 or 4 years ago. It has three mirrors. One front-centre and two that fold out either side – like it has wings. I have Venus in Virgo in House 1, Libra Sun, Taurus Moon, Leo Rising. Roses-and-stuff I wonder if having venus in virgo indicates a practical beauty.

Or maybe also finding beauty in practicality.

I think having a three sided mirror sounds very practical as you can easily see if you forgot to do something along your jawline…like blending. You get to see that your hair looks good from all angles. I have venus in virgo too, and the Leo sun combo. What you have just makes sense to me.

GemHub (Venus in Gem) bought me a lovely little Arte Deco dresser which actually didn’t vibe too badly, but I kept feeling a grumpy guy came with it. I just remembered that when the girls were growing up they didn’t always have a dressing table as such…although the Sagg later did. What they had was an area in the room with a mirror, and a space to put all there grooming tools. Situating this near a power point for hairdryers, and straighteners etc made this deadly practical, and easier to live with as a family. Totally freed up the bathroom from people hogging it for grooming. As previously mentioned… Venus in Virgo. I too got my first dressing table at 10 years old. Plus a fabulous stool with padded top. All white, curved legs, gold handles and a lovely oval shaped mirror (attached to table). Mum also bought me a dressing table set…and gave me a set of doilies that some elderly relative had embroidered. Money was never plentiful, so I can appreciate the thought and planning that went into this gesture.

I no longer have one – space is an issue – but this photo is inspiring. Gemini sun, Venus in Cancer.

Good luck finding one for your daughter, Mystic.

Am looking for one at the moment. Seen a few but so far not ‘the one’. After years of leaning over the bathroom sink and squinting at the mirror I can’t wait to be able to sit in comfort listening to music as I prepare to face the world. I’m convinced I’ll look much better for it. (Venus in Taurus) You know, just the other day I was looking at my overcrowded, tiny bathroom sink and thought I should set up a little dressing table. I have an impressive oak dresser with a huge mirror, and a matching oak chair that I use in the living room but really belongs as part of my bedroom set. I thought it might be a good idea to have a separate little place to dry off after a shower, apply some (Leo Ascendant) hair products, trim my sideburns, etc. instead of doing that while slugging down some coffee in front… Read more »

I kept my mother’s art deco one after she died and it was so damaged that I had it restored. The retoration guy told me it would never be worth the money it took to restore it because no one uses them anymore (like sideboards apparently) and people’s bedrooms are too small. I really like the fact that you didin’t listen to the restoration guy. When we were moving once, the removalist giving us a quote really sneered at a garden lounge I LOVED. I had one when I was a teenager, shared with my Libran sister. I would like one but will have to find a small one and get rid of another piece of furniture to fit it. They always have them at thrift/vintage stores. The other day I found a really amazing one with matching wardrobe, art deco, gorgeous! My Leo neighbor has one and I had a Taurus friend who had a kind of homemade cobbled together one including the rows of lightbulbs ala “backstage”. I do love them.

So on the haunted thing so glad people are sharing that angle – I’ve had it too – with the art deco dressing table. The all time favourite. I was obsessed with it from the moment I laid eyes on it. As a child, loved to admire myself prancing around in various get-ups in front of mum’s dressing table. Desperately wanted my own but was thwarted until I left home, and had a few over the years. I used to have the most gorgeous art deco dressing table – dark wood with a full-length mirror in the middle and half-length mirror on either side that you could angle. I bought it for myself in my late teens and restored it, kept it until my early 30s, when I had to give it away (to another Libran) because I no longer had the space. I still miss it.

had one when i was living at home in my teens. It was made of pine with 2 drawers. I found a large cane mirror at the markets and got my dad to combine the two. When i moved out of home (early 20’s) i painted it black. Then got rid of it a few years later.

I think dressing tables are a bit naff now. Bathroom mirror is fine but it has to be big and lighting is very important.
