The Ultimate Virgo

Tom Ford looking dapper

Whenever I read something about Tom Ford – and there has been heaps lately because of his apparently brilliant directorial debut, The Single Man – I always think that he truly is the Ultimate Virgo. His attention to detail, control-freakiness and self-confessed Virgoanness are all part of his legend.

Along with Carine Roitfeld, he is one of my favourite Virgoans Of Fashion – that’s the thing, there are UNTOLD Virgos working in the fashion industry.  It totally makes sense. A Virgo needs to work in an industry where ability to spot a dodgy hemline or fake Hermes handbag from three blocks away is an asset.  Where everyone has diet bipolarity, alternating between champagne, chocolate and detoxes.

Tom Ford, they say, is obsessed with hygiene & goes through a bottle of eye drops a week as he requires that his eyes look always bright, sparkling and alert. Is this enough to afford him Ultimate Virgo status? Do you know any Ultimate Virgos? My vision of Ultimate Virgo is that he/she is go into the clean-thing (like Ingrid Bergman) that there would be weekly colonics. For the flat tummy and because once glimpsed, the ideal of the clean colon is hard for Ultimate Virgo to let go of.

Ultimate Virgo would also get bi-weekly hair trims, enjoy vigorous exfoliations & sometimes spend up to an hour comparing the mineral analysis of various spring waters in the supermarket. If Ultimate Virgo had a shrink, the shrink would themselves be in therapy just to gather stamina for the relentless questioning of Ultimate Virgo.  Thoughts?

another quotable phrase a propos (anal) virgo perfectionism, especially in relation to tom ford and ‘ a single man’: style as martial arts – originally came up in relation to that alltime old smooithie cary grant especially circa north by northwest, and the inspiration around james bond – but i guess also latterly the phenomenon of mad men, the recent bromance and young conservative hollywood, george clooney as a comedic ghost (man who is never there)/sad clown etc etc – and indeed both colin firth and tom ford mention in the publicity blurbs about style as armour. tres intersting methinks.

I have lots of virgo friends. I would much rather be stranded with a virgo than a barely literate, moronic alcoholic saggo. I guess the ultimate virgy would be an ex-fling of mine. Dental artiste as a job? Yis. (super clean and finicky and details galore) Obsessed with butts? Yis. (Tapping my butt, pinching it, sleeping with his hand on it.) V.V. clean? Yis. Refusal to wear deoderant because it would give him cancer? Yis. Secret personalities? Many. Strange man. He tried to pick me up at a train station 4 years after we dated. I don’t think he recognised… Read more »

what do you have in virgo Leonine?
ive only got Sir Chiron in the 6th house … medical ideals?

Uranus Virgo 13°08’29 in house 4 direct

I found this bit about the 6th house on astro.com…

“The 6th is where we build mastery of our craft. We may want nothing less than consistent success, but disequilibrium is where the magic is. Creativity often springs from failure.”

scorpalicious robot

that’s interesting about the 6th house. I have north Node in Gemini there! Still can’t work out what it all means! *scratches head*.
I might save that quote and dwell on it.

leonine librarian
leonine librarian

SR for me that quote means that I see creativity springing from failure working when I hit a wall and need to find away over it, or under it or through it…or the wall hits me and then I find a way to creatively deal with : ) My Scorp moon is in the 6th house.Wheeee…

scorpalicious robot

i totally get the creativity springing from failure part but I still quite get a handle on working my Gemini north node.

I’m operating sans coffee…soz…my mind is currently stuck on all that can come from looking at things from multiple points…and not just wallowing in the possibilities…but somehow breathe life and act. Just printed off a project list to frame some of the aforementioned ‘action’.

Could the north node in gemini be about ways to communicate…maybe creating new ways to communicate when you maybe find people not getting something you find clear?

SR do you find it easier to translate thought into imagery via your graphics and photography work?

[crap 1 more minute of allotted time on this computer]

scorpalicious robot

maybe, but i could never communicate like a Gem. I’m way too intense and yes, with Merc and Neptune in Scorp i have trouble translating thought into words, don’t know if it’s any easier translating it into visuals but I definitely think in visuals. Probably why i have trouble explaining myself sometimes – i expect peeps to see what i’m thinking.

My brain has taken a holiday with Mars retro, don’t know what to think about anything anymore!

leonine librarian

snap on the ‘don’t know what to think about anything anymore’…yet every now and then there is a moment of clarity. I take notes when this happens…lol. Oh I am feeling much more leo lately though. I had a moment yesterday where I was talking with another Leo friend and her Cancerian friend( kakky peeps make great friends btw) sort of launched herself into her arms for a hug. She ended up she was nervous about public speaking…so the other Leo and I did sort of supportive public speaking bootcamp in situ. The other leo had to leave and we… Read more »

Ok I feel I must break my vow of blog silence here, due to my vast and thorough examination of the species known as Virgo. And yes they are a species of humanity unto themselves – possibly hailing from a distant germ-free galaxy far far away where all hail to the Great Exfoliator. Seriously tho … it’s oft forgot that Virgo is a mutable sign and thus far less exacting and fixated as they are made out to be – unless we’re talking about the details and specifics of their particular obsessive pursuit – which I find is far more… Read more »

So agree with you about the Cancer moon, I do spend a lot of time thinking about and activating how my kids will turn out.

My Virgo sister, even in the throes of a schizophrenic episode would pull apart her furniture take it out side and neatly stack it all in little piles every piece just so. Heart wrenching yet amazing as it was.

Yes, spot on about certain specialties….

Kataka, Virgo Moon ex hub, “Mother Hen” of sorts, but a good dad when girls were little except when threatening to break their arms.

Imagine your child calling you on the phone and crying “Mom, dad says he’s going to break my arm”. Was kinda funny really because he never spanked them, ever. Still I said “will you please quit threatening to break their arms?

And Virgo rising daughter very concerned about body parts missing, illnesses. (Gee, maybe the broken bones thing had something to do with the body parts..)

Lol, I like the bit about relating to people’s parents due to our hypochondria. It’s true, a geriatric lurks within Virgos of all ages.

However, I’m considering whether to ever speak to you again now that I know you’ve considered using someone else’s toothbrush. The thought of it has me scrambling for the Rescue Remedy, and bleach.

Odette-in-Libra

That was great, prowlncat. My Virgo planets are nodding – & the rest of my planets are laughing at them. (And like Uber Virgo, I’m so horrified by the image of someone using ANYONE else’s toothbrush that I’m going to go dunk mine in hydrogen peroxide right now.)

I’ve commented before on the messiness of a lot of the Virgos I know (including myself), so I’m not sure that cleanliness is a universal Virgoan trait. However, I’m certain that the critical eye and the drive to instill order are – maybe they just manifest themselves differently in the various Virgos I know? My Virgo ex was an excellent sound engineer – he had the ‘critical ear’, I guess. I personally love to write but the thing is, I like editing almost as much! And I think we’re often uncomfortable because of the aforementioned tendency to criticize. We save… Read more »

“We save our most biting criticism for ourselves and nothing escapes our notice” – ABSOLUTELY!!!! I’ve had to learn to ease up on that & it’s been hard to synchronize what/how others see me & how I see myself. Lately it’s been nice to trust what they tell me, well, the ones I trust anyway, hehehe… And with Scorpy rising & Pisces moon, I can tell the fake ones a mile away.

I totally agree, the Ultimate Virgo’s psychotherapist would have to attend some sort of gestalt boot camp on a regular basis. Plus demand danger money.

My own shrinks have been extremely tough, although they’ve all taken early retirement for some reason.

Lexicorn
Lexicorn

I have only seen one shrink, and it wasn’t really by choice. I had 6 sessions assigned as part of a ‘victims of violent crime’ service…
I ended up counseling the shrink and stopped going after 4 sessions.

My best friend is a Virgo, and she has done coffee enemas for years, not just any coffee, special organic stuff by mail order. Yes, she is also obsessed with stationery, all in original packaging, never used. Oddly enough, she is notoriously messy, though always has the best tech gear available, is generally laissez faire about clothing (she would wear the most awful sweatpants to work everyday), but will go to any lengths to get the perfect handbag or wallet. Odd.

Lexicorn
Lexicorn

Many Virgos are a mess in one aspect or another of their life. It’s the extreme order they bring to a single particular facet of their being that is most beguiling.
I wonder if the organic coffee enema comes in decaf?

Two of my favourite people in the world are Virgo. I have mars in Virgo so while I am not Virgoan, I so appreciate their methods and ways. They have a clarity about life and themselves that I don’t see so lovingly expressed by other signs. A kind of beautiful carefulness…

Maybe they aren’t that comfortable with things they can’t control (so almost everything) like Baristagem says, but it’s kind of self focused and not so offensive…
None of my friends are the ‘uber Virgo’ (sorry Uber!) of legend, but they each have their ‘thing’.

Baristagem

For everything that Virgo’s do for perfection or whatever why do they seem so uncomfortable with themselves? I know so many Virgos that I wonder how I came to know so many, I have a flock actually. My mum was a virgo & I never saw her not made up or dressed perfectly, yet seemed uncomfortable. My older brother is the typical Virgo nurse/fashion designer, again always uncomfortable about himself. Growing up I was constantly saying to him ‘yes you look great!’….. 😯 Other Virgo’s I know often discuss how they don’t like to relax or they relax by ironing… Read more »

Ah, so we have some fans and some not so ? I am not into the fashion but mental health industry. Virgo Sun, cancer moon and aqua rising.Thank the goddess for aquarius ! But I do make a damned sharp psych nurse. I do realise that my inner virgo can be a pain, to myself more than others’ really, these days. Tamberlaine, nice to hear some coping strategies.
I have three planets in Virgo (Venus, Uranus & Pluto), and although the mention of weekly colonics made me blanch, I can get really hung up on choosing exactly the right coffee or feel the need to clean every visible surface before getting down to business. (I think sometimes my picky Virgo planets & my Lazy Libra Sun & Mercury work in collusion – Libra likes to procrastinate & Virgo gives her excuses to do it.)

scorpalicious robot
scorpalicious robot

😆 I can relate to that. I have Mars, Uranus & Pluto in Virgo and Venus in Libra. I ALWAYS read and compare ingredients! If i’m looking for a new muesli or whatever I will stand in the aisle for hours, comparing sugar/protein/ingredient content and sometimes it’s all too much so I walk away. The only time i have trouble deciding anything, is if it’s between two colours or two items.

Savannah

Libra ex many planets in Virgo & Scorp, would get really hung up on making little decisions for instance… about whether to shave/trim or not, which part of the house to attack with the bleach, vacuum cleaner. Freak totally out if he saw a stray pubic hair in the bathroom, kitchen or laundry (probably was his but he’d blame eldest son).

I’m like Lisa & CBA with the big picture/common denominator, details bore me out after awhile, makes me want to go AWOL or something.

I think I might have commented about ‘A Single Man’ a couple of weeks ago, might be repeating myself. BUT. It is like watching an exercise in VIRGO. It is the single most Virgoan film I have ever seen. What with Ford directing, and Colin Firth, Virgo, in the lead, and based on the book by Virgo Isherwood – it is a virtual encyclopedia / How To of Virgo. Then this beautiful Sag energy buzzes in with Julieanne Moore, and then we buzz back out into Virgoville. A mean, honestly – A Virgo attempting to keep suicide tidy…. priceless. As… Read more »

When channelled in to music – rather than personal hygiene – Virgo’s also strive for similarly cleanliness. Clean tones, clean melodies, clean timing, clean harmonies, attention to detail in the nuances of the sound. Close enough is NOT good enough for a Virgo muso…it must be right. (And are detailed obsessed with filing systems for their sheet music and recordings too). My fiddle teacher is one!

I saw ‘A Single Man’ on Saturday too and it’s still lingering in my heart and mind. What a sumptuous feast for the eyes – it oozed stye and perfection, just like Mr Ford himself. All the attention to detail had me swooning for 90 minutes, and long after the movie ended. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack all weekend and can’t wait to buy the DVD.

Is it really possible to love Virgos anymore than i already do?

have you wong kar wai-ed yet? apparently, tom ford was quite influenced by him, also pedro almodovaar – both these directors are supreme visualists. especially as regards the music, wkw’s “In the Mood for Love” and “2046” were also scored by the same japanese composer.
also, wkw has always collaborated with the one production designer/editor – william chang, who is beyond praise. i hope you check them out!

YES!!!!!!!!! i have Wong kar wai-ed. It makes perfect sense that Tom was influenced by him. I loved ‘In the Mood for Love’ and ‘2046’ is one of my all time fave movies. I have the dvd and soundtrack also.
The penned dropped on the weekend when I tried to remember the last time a movie blew me away with it’s breathtaking visuals and 2046 came to mind. It was the music in that movie that played a big part in making my heart ache.

Lisa, I agree with and absolutely love your statement, “always after the common denominator or big picture.” Particularly because “common denominator” warms the cockles of my little collectivist Aqua woman of the people heart 🙂

As for signs that get on with Virgo, I’ve noticed Caps (ambition, hard work, detail?) often do as do Cancerians (security, stability?) Am an Aqua with a heap of planets in Virgo and a Virgo Dad & brother, so am quite a fan of the analysis and love of rationality.

I don’t get on well with Virgos. The ones I know are accountants or have some equally tedious and detailed occupation. Maybe it’s me – Sun, Venus, Mercury and Neptune in Scorpio. I abhor details and I’m always after the common denominator or the big picture. And so I find Virgos a bit tiresome with their going on and on about germs and missed pennies. Is there a sign or signs with with whom Virgos are unlikely to get along????

I saw it too last week – sooo precise and beautiful. Someone very special in my family was a Virgo and the precision, cleanliness, muted colours, beautiful architecture would all have appealed to him. He prepared for death in the same, precise, careful Virgo way and it made everything so much easier for those who remained. I must say the precise ascetic minimalism of the film appealed to me as a way of living even though I have no Virgo in my chart or even progressed chart if I remember rightly.
