Astro-Beauty: Your Mother Taught You…

Bratz Dolls Mother and DaughterBratz

Okay, so it is Mother’s Day soon & here is a chance to think – as deeply or as bimbonically as you like – re what lessons your Mother taught you about beauty, grooming & fashion. Either purposefully or by her example.

Was it sensible – cleanse your face before you go to bed? Insane? Irrelevant? Inspirational? Controlling?

You are what sign and she is what sign?

Would you pass the same stuff onto a daughter of yours – hypothetical or for real?

You can throw in  your Moon signs to this as well if you like, because the Mother IS kind of your Moon sign. Your Moon is totally what you want her to be, for sure.

I’m a Gemini with Aquarius rising, and my mom is Aquarius, Gemini rising! Virgo-Cancer moons, respectively. We are great friends, but I do have some resentment over feeling like the mother growing up. I guess my Virgo moon did want a more Virgoan mom..someone who was more present, responsible, and paid attention to detail. Nevertheless, I was very proud of my eccentric and beautiful mom! She was a bit of a contradiction. On one hand very athletic, plain and tomboy as a girl. Never obsessed over her weight, had no issues with food, didn’t put any on me. Thank God… Read more »

My Mum…Libra sun, Cancer rising. Unbelievably beautiful when younger. Looked like a cross between Elizabeth Taylor and Catherine Zeta Jones. Unfortunately due to worry, stress and illness, and sun-worshipping, has not aged so well. So I think I have learnt from her…STAY OUT OF THE SUN. I never listened to her in my teens or early twenties, but seeing the results I wear 50plus sun protection. As a Libran she always says, ‘You must look nice, you must always look nice.’ So always turn up to her place looking at least presentable otherwise I hate the disdain in her face… Read more »

Oh don’t we just love talking about our mums, good or bad it’s cathartic. Great topic Mystic. My mum is Aqua with Saggo moon and I’m Taurus with Leo moon. I see my mother’s style as totally an expression of her individuality and given that we are like chalk and cheese I never modelled myself on her. For example she likes a cacophony of colour, she dresses like a girl because she feels like one, she doesn’t mind a bit of bling or plastic when she goes out and she’s one of the few women I know that can pull… Read more »

I’m Libra, with Pisces rising & Virgo moon (Mars & Venus in Scorp, hence nick). My mother is a Gemini who is also obsessed with her weight and my weight – from the other end of the spectrum to Mons as we are both larger sizes. Like Mons I’ve watched mum do every diet imaginable & try to talk me into those awful shake or soup diets. I did OK with Lite’n’Easy for a while but just ended up just craving non-microwaved dishes. There’s also been condescending/negative comments over the years about men & sex – because I should want… Read more »

Ta seabird. Everyone loves my mum. Everyone! Whenever I see friends or even go to certain shops everyone asks how she is. So much so that I end up saying ‘to hell with her, what about me?’

My mum was a virgo & I never saw her without make-up, a hair out of place & nails always professionally manicured. My grandmother was the same I never her without make-up either, plus my aunts & my mum used to do some modeling in their day. Mum didn’t try to dress me up or became control freakish about me looking like a mini her, thank goodness. What a lot of work must go into that! I’m a gemini & really… I’m Ok about putting in some effort, but that’s OTT. Although the only thing she would encourage me do… Read more »

My Mum is you guessed it, Virgo, and until recently had zero beauty regime. Now she believes in moisturiser and has allowed my sister to buy her Natio. Ironically, my beauty therapist is also Virgo, with the same birthday as my mother – suns both conjunct my Venus in Virgo – and I learned my regime from her. All aromatherapy as allergic to most other cosmetics. My mother couldn’t care a damn about fashion either, and buys clothes from catalogues. She doesn’t car a damn about a lot of things except the dog. She likes animals and children but thinks… Read more »

I love the fact that you can describe your Mum as a hardline anarchist, looking like the Queen and thinking all men should be neutered after a 40 year marriage.

I sometimes wonder what the Queen really thinks of Prince Phillip.

my scorpio (late degree) mother and i have VERY different attitudes towards beauty- she has always worn no makeup whereas i never leave the house without it, the same goes for wardrobe, hair etc. i think appearance is one the most powerful tools one can have in their arsenal, and to neglect is close to criminal. im not quite sure what my pisces moon longed for, but her lack of caring re this issue has always stumped/infuriated me. that said, she did teach me via the ‘less is best’ mantra, that all makeup/hair should look as natural as possible,

Me Aqua, Mum Leo. Being dark and German my Mum was young when she had all 7 of us kids 20 – 29 years old when she did this feat. She never had time to pretty herself up, she never had the money to either her life was extremely difficult with a sometimes violent husband. Our father was abysmal drinker & gambler. Aaaanyway, she always looked beautiful and still does, Helena Christensen reminds me of my mother. I still remember her in 1975 coming to my schoolroom with my lunch I’d forgotten her hair permed and a white & blue… Read more »

How funny, I’ve just been deeply pondering all of this. Gemini, Taurus rising, Aquarius moon My incredibly Scorpionic and beautiful mother (born on Halloween), was absolutely terrified of anything that might remotely suggest that her daughter had any sex appeal whatsoever. her comments were of the ‘get that lipstick off your face, you look like a whore,’ type. She never attempted to show me any way of looking after myself or my skin and I was never allowed makeup. She accused me several times when I became a buxom teenager of deliberately leading her older male friends on, and openly… Read more »

Seabird, I’ve got one of those daughter’s too. She’s also a Libra and is just beautiful, she was born on an eclipse and has Mars opposite Venus which apparently adds to her allure. She seems to have been born with the knowledge of inner beauty, is one of the world’s caring people, gives hugs and kisses to everyone. I’m a Libra too, but didn’t get the stunning looks of my daughter. My mother is a stoic Lioness, with a Gemini moon and I’m 99.9% convinced that she has a Virgo Asc even though we don’t know her birth time. She would put the Puritans to shame. Can’t stand wearing “muck” on her face and her idea of dressing up is a silk scarf and a beret (probably the only person I know who doesn’t look like a complete tosser wearing one), as she’s waltzing off to her book club, poetry class or studies into ancient freakin Mesopotamian culture or whatever. She’s always doing some course about something … the more ancient… Read more »

She sounds fab, Prowlncat. My Leo moon digs the stoic. Also reminds me of my nan who’ll be 99 this year. She is Scorp with Cancer moon but I just do not understand her chart because she’s not emo at all and her only thoughts on sex are that it is a necessary evil (she probably thinks she did it four times too many). And like your mum she never used any make up in her whole life. Cleansing, toning and moisturing? What a nonsense, just wash your face and get on with something useful. Amazingly she has beautiful soft… Read more »

They’re a different generation grassmuncher. I haven’t delved into the astro but there’s something going on different to us lot. Well my mum’s only 68 (tho you couldn’t tell) – however she flatly refuses to be a consumer. She despises any form of unnecessary buying of crap. Things literally have to cark it before she replaces them. When I queried her on the celibacy thing she said “I had enough sex in 15 years with that man than I will ever require in my entire life”. Just like that. Sans sentiment. He was a OTT Leo dude tho. I love… Read more »

Generation gap explains a lot. There’s actually 40 years diff between my mum and my grandmother and they have a huge clash of personalities. I find I have a lot more common ground with nan for some reason but I’m glad she’s not my mother. I’ll keep the volatile, unhinged, charismatic, inconsistent, inexplicable aquarian any day (at least until the next time we butt heads). It’s been great reading these tales of all the other nutty mum’s out there. Onya Mystic.

My Mum I grew up with is an Aries. Photos of her in the 50’s and 60’s look very hollywood with a little bit of Jackie O going on. She was both a primary school teacher and ballroom dance teacher previous to chucking it all in to be a Mum… She had some amazing gowns. These made fantastic dress up clothes. I still remember fondly an deep emerald green gown with a multi coloured flounced panel sort of like a fan at the back of her skirt…good quality heavy satin. My mum is a vain Gemini – I say that with love – who wears makeup practically every day, even on holidays. Even on summer beach holidays I would watch her put her makeup on in the morning – the fully monty – foundation, blush, eyeshadow, lipstick…maybe not the mascara, but then she never went in the water so, maybe, yes! I thought she was mad. I now realise that she is quite insecure and makeup is her protective armour. My mum is very lady-like – feminism pretty much passed her by in the 60’s and 70’s, so no hairy… Read more »

My mother was a sagg, and I’m obviously a leo but with a libran moon. also I don’t think I agree with the idea that my moon sign is what i would like my mother to be. I mean I like the idea of independent, earthy, rich, business minded. But being a pisces i would have liked more warmth and congeniality. she’s not very emo, on the outside at least. all pisceans need a bit of emo and TLC. it was hard growing up surrounded by air signs sometimes. My Leo mother wore very expensive foundation garments even though she was in great shape. She said it was important to have a smooth line with no lumps and bumps except where you wanted them. Both she and my Aries grandmother were soap and cold water girls with Oil of Ulan (now Olay) if needed. Both had beautiful unlined skins and were firm believers in wearing hats to keep the sun off their faces. Both had soft curling hair worn short and chic. Both believed in quality over quantity and never went anywhere public looking ungroomed. Both nagged about posture.… Read more »

Yeah she is a bit (ok really) mean in that respect but it’s only one part of her. Everyone has a dark side and I suppose that’s hers and it’s based on her own insecurities. Mum had an extremely overweight mother who pretty much became a recluse because of her weight. Mum was teased mercilessly by other kids when she was a kid about having a fat mother who hid inside because she was so fat. So I can understand where it comes from and it’s easy for me to overlook if that makes sense. The rest of her is… Read more »

My taurus mother married into a very patrician family and took to it quite nicely- however most of what I learned about beauty I absorbed from my tiny elegant grandmother, a gemini who wore gorgeous little bespoke chanel-type suits, wore very little jewelry but substantial pieces she loved, stayed well out of the sun by reading georgette heyer novels on the porch of her summer home, her white skin and dark brown hair with a widow’s peak was natural, she used only castile soap imported from spain with a top note of “blue grass” by Elizabeth Arden; she ate like… Read more »

Misery destroys beauty though… when I came into my teens she was in her early thirties and working for Max Factor and Elizabeth Arden – she gave me skin care products and make up and I got into a routine of ‘cleanse, tone and moisturise’ – for which I’ll be forever grateful. I have a beautiful, luminous mother

65 and still very sexy – her style is classic with a twist, sometimes quite bold but always good fabric, good cuts – perhaps a bold colour, a large turquoise pendant, something original…..

She has mastered the art of being insightful and intrigued by people – there is such beauty in just really being there and listening to people.

She is a scorpio, but very much the evolved healing phoenix type

Ah what a fabulous subject to ponder. My mother now has Alzheimers and I miss her dearly. Although over the years I have come to terms with this ‘death by a thousand cuts’ more and more.
