My lovely friend Kim Falconer’s new book Arrows Of Time is out.  I loved the Spell Of Rosette and this is the 2nd in the series.  It reminds me of my fave classics: Ursula K Le Guin, Madeleine L’Engle, Tanith Lee…What is awesome about Kim’s fiction is that it works as a thriller and as science fantasy but she actually uses PROPER magic in them…So the herblore, martial arts Qi stuff and astrology is all totally accurate. It makes for a more satisfying read. I cannot bear books that pretend to be all about witches or whatever but they mix up mugwort with hemlock or something. I also love the idea of time travelling expert swordswomen witches who are also brilliant at computers & quantum physics.

And so anyway, I have interviewed Kimmy!

MYSTIC: Please can you give a quick precis of this book – the 2nd in a series – for those not familiar with your work?

KIM FALCONER The Quantum Enchantment Series is ’speculative fiction’–a story about real people up against the wall, immersed in nano-technology and witchcraft, sentient and gender biases, fast horses, hot bards, stunning tattoos and environments on the brink of destruction. It has elements of fantasy, science fiction and magical realism, exploring the relationship between magic and technology, thought and energy in parallel worlds. Book one, The Spell of Rosette, begins the journey–a coming of age for a young witch. Arrows of Time, book 2, continues the story. It is set in three worlds experiencing multiple sequences of time.

MYSTIC: Kimmy, I love how you weave actual magic, spellcraft, herblore and – of course – astrology into your fiction. Can you give me an example from Arrows Of Time?

KIM FALCONER:
There are a lot of astrological references in the whole series. One example is when Kreshkali reflects on how An’ Lawrance’s accepts his new apprentices.
Excerpt: ‘Not bad for a man with his moon in the fixed sign of the Scorpion. Change didn’t come easy for such a placement, nor did letting go of grudges, but he’d handled it with near effortlessness, if you didn’t count the grumbles, scowls and derogatory annotations.’
Hara, or Qi energy is a strong element in my novels — it is the source of magical power after all. Because some of the main characters wield Samurai swords, you’ll see them channelling their energy, using the sword as a conduit and then, well, depending on whether it’s training or a real confrontation, heads may roll!

MYSTIC You are a whiz at Horary Astrology- please explain how it works and why you’re so good at it?

KIM FALCONER: Horary astrology was developed at a time when few charts were drawn for individuals, save royalty. Many people didn’t even know their birth day let alone time so if they wanted to consult ‘the stars’ it couldn’t be done through the birth chart. Enter the horary method! It is a chart done for the moment in time ‘you ask the question’. The interpretation is made through a symbol system that derives meaning from planetary motions. The idea of horary–which is deeply explored in Arrows of Time through a conversation between Kreshkali and her apprentice–is not causal (not planets causing events) but synchronicity—meaningful coinciding of planets with events. Why do I have a knack for reading them? It’s really all about practice–I’ve been doing them for a long long time!

MYSTIC: What are your thoughts on the upcoming Saturn-square Pluto in Capricorn aspect – in late November…Do you agree with me that it’s going to be a real “tell” of how Pluto in Cap is likely to manifest over the next few years???

KIM FALCONER: Saturn often coincides with a big dose of ‘reality’ so in that sense yes, it will be telling. On a personal level I think it will be very significant for relationships of all kinds. Saturn is exalted in Libra and whenever he’s found in this sign, he cleans house in the relationship department. For those who have a clear, beautiful, openhearted love life, they will find it deepening–things get richer–better! For those ‘tolerating’ partnerships that are no longer authentic or nurturing, the strength to make creative change–and the impulse to do so–will be at hand.

MYSTIC: I absolutely love the character of the witch genius and fighter Rosette – what is her astro?

KIM FALCONER: Rosette, born in Gaela, has sun in the sign of the Twins (Gemini) a Water-bearer moon (Aquarius) square Uranus and the Lion (Leo) rising . She has one heck of a Neptune transit to her sun in Arrows of Time–it has quite a literal effect!

MYSTIC: Whenever we talk, I always love how your positive philosophy seems to sort of blend Law of Attraction stuff with very practical astrology, goddess worship and quantum physics. Is it poss for you to please precis your philsophy?

KIM FALCONER: My motto is –We are spiritual beings in physical bodies here to experience life. From that perspective, we can drop words like ‘good’ and ‘bad’, ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ and replace them with notions of ‘alignment’, ‘vibration’ and ‘energy’. I also believe that we ‘get what we vibrate’. When I attract something to me that I don’t like, the first thing I ask is, what does this have to do with me? It helps in seeing the world from a different angle! (or angel :)

josephine_baker

Today is the birthday of the amazing Josephine Baker – all I really knew of her was that she was an amazingly talented and spectacular singer/dancer, known as the Bronze Venus & that she adopted a dozen children – all from different races & countries. A la Angelina Jolie, born on June 4, btw. I always think of her as that girl in the banana skirt.

But there is so much more to her!  From a  horribly hard childhood, she became celebrated and was the first African-American woman (her parents had been slaves) to star in a major motion picture. She was offered the leadership of the American Civil Rights movement after Martin Luther King was killed. She received the French Croix De Guerre for her work with the French Resistance. She actually volunteered to be a spy the day that World War II broke out. There is loads more…

She’s TOTALLY a Gemini; Sun, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter & Pluto all together in Gemini & squared by Saturn in Pisces.

Scheduled in my diary for next weekend: Kickboxing class, Relationship Exorcist, Kundalini Yoga, Buy mugwort seedlings.

The Relationship Exorcist was recommended by my Piscean Actress friend. She doesn’t have any contact details. I am to walk up the main street of Leichhardt (the Italian quarter of Sydney) and look to the lefthand side. The Relationship Exorcist is named Caterina and she may or may not have a pink sign. Apparently she is very good.

The Kundalini  Yoga freaks me as everyone I know who has been doing it has visions & major releases/insights. Jung thought it too powerful & that it could send some people completely cuckoo. So next week I may be chanelling well-intended but hard-to-decipher alternative dimension gibberish for you. Or writing in Sanskrit as the only lingo pure enough for my wide-open chakras.

Until May 22 – when the Sun skips into Gemini & the Auspicious Aqua-Weirding (Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron in tight orb together) begins – there are shitloads of fixed squares. Fixed squares are tricky to deal with – lots of tension but it seems harder to resolve than the more action producing mutable & cardinal squares. Truculence & power-tripping is rife + they seem to trigger already angry/resentful people. It’s only a few days but just be aware of it…Stay safe & of the light. Try to dance around/ glide away from control dramas or at least be aware when they’re going on. Take the haute road.

I did an extended rave re this in the Daily Mystic but you work this astro-vibe best by using it to make powerful internal shifts of attitude yourself & think Dignity/Resilience.

george-clooney-on-esquire-cover-picture7

Have just been reading this fantastic Telegraph article re the possible romance between George Clooney & Fatima Bhutto.

“…Fresh from an ill-fated entanglement with a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, George Clooney, Hollywood’s Armani-suited Renaissance Man-on-call, is reported to have fallen for 26-year-old Fatima Bhutto, the new star of Pakistan’s greatest political dynasty. Across the sub-continent the excitement spread like Valentine’s Weekend wildfire. And why not? George is radical, Fatima is chic. It has to work out this time….”

Oddly enough, having adored Clooney in a number of movies (Intolerable Cruelty, Oceans 11, Three Kings & even One Fine Day) I actually got a bit sick of the sight of him last year. Prob just over-exposure, a bit like every mag having Kate Hudson on the cover at the moment and more or less the same article re her fabulosity.  But GC is incredible & apart from her being gorgeous & about 20 years younger than him, Ms Bhutto – the neice of Benazir – would seem to be a really interesting choice of would-be girlfriend for him. She, apparently, is not so keen because of the age gap & her fairly intense concerns in Pakistan.

And, looking at the astro between them, i wondered if she had an astrologer run the charts & then flipped. I mean really. With no time of birth for her (May 29 1982) it’s hard to be definitive about this but still…A few highlights. Or maybe lowlights.

George Clooney is a Taurus (Sun conjunct Mercury) with Pisces Rising and Moon-Saturn in Capricorn. That Moon-Saturn is a very sombre position & despite his debonair aura, that denotes a person who is very careful/conservative with giving his heart & most likely with good reason. Early hurt etc etc.Ms Bhutto is an early Gemini with Moon in Leo & we don’t know the rising due to no time. Her Venus in Aries squares (challenging) his sensitive Moon-Saturn in Capricorn combo. Her Pluto in Libra squares that Moon-Saturn in Capricorn combo. Both have Venus in Aries but not conjunct.

So that’s like a kind of similarity. But then her Saturn in Libra opposes his Venus. Her Jupiter squares his Jupiter. Her Sun squares his Chiron. Oh – a nice one – her Sun in Gemini trines his Jupiter in Aquarius. Her Uranus squares his Pisces Ascendent. Her Sun squares his Pisces Ascendent. This is a LOT of squares – ie; challenges -  & that is just from a cursory glance.

Some squares between charts are good. They are all about growth. And you certainly know when the other person’s in the room. But too many makes for just old-fashioned they-get-on-your-nerves-ishness. Of course, if they did manage to overcome some of the obstacles between them, doesn’t this mean George Clooney could one day be first “lady” of Pakistan? Or first man? And would it help or hinder U.S-Pakistani relations?

Oh and note that Saturn has just entered George Clooney’s 7th house for the first time in 29 years. So he is suddenly incapable of casual relationships. It would have to either be a significant partnership (apparently with some geopolitical impact as well, as he is such an  O.T.T. show-off with his cute little Mars at Zero degrees of Leo) or nothing-at-all. She is his Saturn-in-the-7th house manifestation. And maybe the Saturnine lesson would be a woman he cannot have…I am not generally judgemental re age gaps but i do think it is easier if both parties are either pre or post Saturn Return. It makes SUCH a difference.

Then again, she is having her Saturn Return in 2011 & with Saturn opposing her natal Venus shortly thereafter, reflecting a challenging & intense relationship most likely with an older person.
