“Beryl Markham was one of the most extraordinary of explorers. But she was also an emotionally deprived child and, as an adult, a serious outlaw of love. She died in 1986 at the age of 83; that year was the fiftieth anniversary of her historic solo flight across the Atlantic…Imperious, ravishingly beautiful and fluorescent with life, she charmed her way from one continent to another. Though men baulked at her flagrant promiscuity, it didn’t stop them being drawn to her. Her lovers included some of the most famous artists, adventurers and scoundrels of her day. But then, she herself was a scoundrel. She never let a lie stand in the way of what she desired…”

“She often rescued pilots who had crashed. Thinking they were doomed, they would see a plane land brilliantly in the bad terrain, then a willowy figure climb out, dressed like a Vogue model in the white silk blouse that was her trademark, pale trousers, a silk scarf at the neck, her hair coiffed and her fingernails carefully painted, handing them a flask of brandy and grinning.”

Diane Ackerman

She was a super-gusty hi-qi Sun in Scorpio with Venus, Mercury & North Node all in Libra, squared by Saturn & trined by Pluto in Gemini. Her Mars is early Virgo, sextiling her Sun and Neptune & squaring Lilith.  It’s hard to know sans birthtime, but that Mars of hers must surely do something else quite full-on. Her Moon’s in Leo. Though Saturn-Pluto in hardcore natal aspect is amazingly motivating & regenerative…

Oh and she has a crater on Venus named after her.

“Did you read Beryl Markham’s book, West With The Night? …She has written so well, and marvellously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with words, picking up whatever was furnished on the job and nailing them together and sometimes making an okay pig pen. But this girl, who is to my knowledge very unpleasant and we might even say a high-grade bitch, can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers … it really is a bloody wonderful book.” Ernest Hemingway

Today is the birthday of  the completely fascinating Sarah Bernhardt

“Why this ongoing attention to a French theatrical star of the distant past? You can ascribe it to Sarah’s rich and notorious private life, always ripe for retelling; to the central role she played in the history of the theater in particular and the culture of the time in general; to the unique way she grew into legend morphing from a tarty little actress into the most famous French person of her century after Napoleon and the most admired Frenchwoman in history after Joan of Arc (whom she played twice she didn’t manage Napoleon, but one of her greatest triumphs was as his doomed son L’Aiglon)

Her undying celebrity would not have surprised her: from her earliest years she was determined to be noticed, to conquer the world, and to do it her own way. When at the age of nine she was dared to jump a ditch and broke her wrist falling into it, she cried out in rage, “Yes, yes, and I’ll try it again if I’m dared to! I’m going to do exactly what I want all my life!” That’s when she decided on “Quand meme” as her motto, and she never relinquished it. She decorated her stationery, her dishes, her silver with it; it was inscribed on the flag she flew over the little fort she bought and summered in on Belle-Isle, off the Brittany coast; it was as much a part of her legend as her scrawniness, her legion of lovers, the coffin she sometimes liked to sleep in. But how to translate it? “Even so”? “No matter what”? “All the same”? “Despite everything”? “Nevertheless”? “Against all odds”? “Whatever”?…”

I always thought she was Libran and indeed, she could be. Just. Would depend on the time of birth.

She was most likely born with her Sun at Zero Scorp, squared by Saturn in Aquarius…And, her Moon was in early Aries, conjunct Uranus and both opposed by Mars…The Mars trining the Saturn. Her birthtime is oft estimated at 8pm – not sure why but it puts her Moon-Uranus on the Midheaven.

And, I love this, given her blissfully intense and creative love life – Venus conjunct Chiron in Virgo…Do read the article, linked in above, it is full of the most fabulous anecdotes…I LOVE the idea of having a motto that you inscribe everywhere.

And surely, she had Leo rising? She looks feline, as Leo Risings so often do.  Note also that the women actually had a lot of aspects traditionally described as “bad” – Sun square Saturn, Moon opposite Mars etc but so many of the most celebrated peeps do have technically “bad” charts. Something to fight against? Miserable childhood worth rising high to get away from? The school of ’surthrival’ as revenge?

“Her admirers? To name a few: Mark Twain (“There are five kinds of actresses: bad actresses, fair actresses, good actresses, great actresses and then there is Sarah Bernhardt”); Freud (“After the first words of her lovely, vibrant voice I felt I had known her for years”); D.H. Lawrence (“She represents the primeval passion of woman, and she is fascinating to an extraordinary degree”). “

Plus there is this fab story about her sojourn in Sydney, Australia…

I  love Demi Moore & actually have for yonks but how hard would it be for her Virgo-Mooned Leo Daughter Rumer Willis to have a birthday party during which her Multiple Scorpio Mum (Sun, Venus, Mercury and Neptune all really close together in Scorpio PLUS Demi has Pisces Rising with Uranus transitting over it so she is going to get weirder soon and with pleasure) insists upon shouting her shared lap dancers in public, papped by arrangement and Scorp-Mom looks eerily younger. Then again, imagine what you could learn from Demi — all those Scorp planets are in the 8th house even.

Have a FUN Mars-Venusian style kinda weekend, what with the conjunction enlivening the Dark Moon in Taurus & all….

I am popping up the road to see a Moon-in-Scorpio Rising client of mine, Abbe May,  perform. This clip below is Eclipse themed, given that the Solar Eclipse on July 22 (the longest and most intense in yonks) is bang on her Cancerian Sun. Again, 29 degrees of Cancer/Kataka is the bit of your chart to be looking at with a major fresh start in mind…Plan to revolutionise there…

My theory is that Crab ladies (a la Isabelle Adjani, above) use sunglasses in much the same way as women of the olden times used their fans – to sort of hide behind & peek come hithery out from.  Leos use their sunglasses like a limo – you can’t see in but they can see out and they can not – they TRULY cannot – resist a little bit of bling on the things. Diamante. The designers initials. Gold trimmings. Scorpios wear sunglasses like armour & they will not hesitate to wear them indoors. Not for a moment. The champion of Scorp sunglassing would have to be the US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, seen here at some fashion parade.

I had a HUGE pair of sunnies a few years ago that i ADORED wearing as they were like a shield but they made me look like a fuqing fly. And an ex-mother-in-law urged me into a buying a really blingy pair that i now sense were a reflection of what she thought of me. They were nicked by a junkie wearing a Juicy Couture trackpants outfit & massive dangly long diamante earrings & glittery ultra violet fake nails. My first sunnies were RayBan & in them, i felt impossibly cool. Last time i got sunglasses they were FITTED by this woman at a shop. A Libran. I was just browsing but she was suddenly insistent on analyzing my face shape & critiquing the Fly Sunnies i already had. She measured my eyebrows. I think maybe because it was actually an optomoetrists. Whatever they are called. And a Libran. Sweet as they so into symmetry and all.

“The palm for an adventurous life, however, and for an improbable romance in the spirit of the age, must surely go to Alexandra David-Néel. She was a doctrinaire feminist, theosophist and anarchist, who was an expert in oriental languages and a professional opera diva, having played Marguerite in Faust, among many other loud and leading roles. She married a yachtsman in Tunis in 1904, before decamping eastwards to become the “spiritual sister” of the ruler of Sikkim, and, for a while, after her royal lover’s murder, a cave-dwelling anchoress. She emerged in the company of a young monk who became her “adopted son” and companion on a three-year journey to Lhasa in the guise of a beggar. On returning to Paris, she occupied a tent outside the Musée Guimet. When she died at the age of 100 she was at work on simultaneous biographies of Jesus Christ and Mao Tse-tung.”

The Times

She was born on October 24 1868 – Sun at 1 degree of Scorpio, Uranus square Pluto & a great big honking Fire Trine;  Mars in Leo trine Jupiter & Neptune in Aries trine Saturn in Saggo. Moon in Aquarius & the Mars in Leo squares Pluto in Taurus.

So, I went and got a manicure today & the woman got to talking about holidays. Was I having one? No, I said – I am actually a total homebody. Note: Jupiter in the 4th house. Doing where-ever your Jupiter is always makes you real  happy. Then we were bonding on how we don’t like hotels. Moon-in-Libra-like, I chirped on about how i didn’t like the commercial detergent used on hotel sheets, that it made me itch & the Feng Shui et al.

“Nooo,” exclaimed the manicurist, painfully cutting my little finger. “It is the ghosts in hotels. People die in hotels a lot more than you hear about. Someone could have died in the hotel bed. Rooms are very often haunted. You don’t know by who and how would the hotel staff?”

She was silent for a few minutes, vigorously buffing my nails. “And,” she sighed, “what about all the people who have had sex in the bed before you? The emanations. Fluids.” After about five more minutes of this ramping up and up to the point where i was starting to freak out , I said “are you a Scorpio?”

Yes she said. “A Scorpio chicken.” Which is what the Chinese year of the Rooster is in Vietnam.

Lindsay Lohan: …You know, I was with this guy Jerry Inzerillo recently, who was running the whole Atlantis [The Palm resort opening celebration] in Dubai. And when I saw him, he started complimenting me, telling me how I reminded him of these other actresses. I literally just sat there . . . He was just saying these really nice things to me that people don’t really ever say, and I started crying. I was like, “Oh, my God, I’m so sorry that I’m crying!” But I was just so emotional about it . . . I’m a Cancer, which means I’m maternal and emotional. So in relationships I’m screwed.

Lauren Hutton: I’m a Scorpio with Cancer rising. I don’t really know what that means.

Lindsay Lohan:  [laughs] I don’t know what it means either! I just know that Scorpio is a little more dangerous than Cancer, but that could actually be really balancing.
