tharpThe Creative Habit – Twyla Tharp

I saw this Jezebel snip about how the choreographer genius Twyla Tharp “gets up at 5 a.m. six days a week to edit her upcoming book Collaborative Habit, then rehearses dancers for her musical Come Fly With Me for seven hours. “Structure is required for creativity,” says Tharp.”

Her older book, The Creative Habit, is by all accounts a madly inspirational and get-thee-to-it-thou-sluggard motivational polemic & how-to, cleverly riffing on the idea that creative cut-through arrives via just chilling t.f out & maybe getting a bit wasted along the way. Yes I totally get that the notes scribbled on bar coasters/back of one’s childen’s school newsletters amidst a Dionysian moment do not often pass creative scrutiny the next day.

But 5am? SIX days a week? As the base?

I was thinking along the lines of TT as a super-industrious Virgo.  A Capricorn? Note pics of her ludicrously flexible et al at age nearly 70. Caps will do that. They and Leo love to be photographed in their 4th century this lifetime or whatever is going on, just casually tucking an ankle behind their blowdried hair.

My own experience of the Saturn through Virgo Transit has led to untold time and money measurements – they become normal under such stars. You count hours – am i working so hard as i think or is it just that I am dreadfully disorganised or overly deadline conscious? You calculate. You start to keep tabs on yourself and it feels like heaven. Warning: Do NOT try this sort of thing if you are not having a major Saturn transit.

You gain an eerie Saturnine glee from such accountability. So I can see how an actual Capricorn (ruled by Saturn) or Virgo would arrive at the 5am each morning start-time for many a practical reason. You need more time? MAKE IT. This is how Earth Signs think.

But she’s a Crab!!! And I have never known a single Crab-Person yet who would not engage in many a complicated negotation to score extra early am sleep…My god, many of them become wealthy (they are the canniest sign of all, remember, most likely to be your next-door millionaire) just because they so value security and the ability to snooze peacefully in, shell intact, savings in place.

But i had a quick peek at Twyla Tharp’s Astro-Databank chart & she may be Cancerian and with her Moon in Sensual Libra et al (also a sleeping-in indicator) BUT she has one major astro-signifier that totally backs up this idea of creative discipline and in fact, makes it absolutely obvious that she would seek a career out of something mega-exacting, controlled AND creative..but with a tradition.

Astro-Fiends can check out her chart here & say what it is: It is ONE particular major aspect that totally stands out and matches her books + image.

Thank you O Full Moon in Pisces, for all those awesome insights & fresh vows.

Now, the gentleman above is Nobel Prize winning poet & playwright Derek Walcott – the pic is grainy as I tore it out of the mag and scanned it but he is 79. And it’s current!  So he has racked up two Saturn Returns and is just a few years off from having his Uranus Return – in Aries and at age 84. Yes, there has been a bit of scandal about him - debated at length – but i was SO impressed by the vision of still-happy, healthy & hot-at-70-something successful poet that i looked at his astro…

Because given that, thank you Saturn, aging/maturity is apparently some sort of stupid condition of birth, it’s awesome to see examples such as Derek W, above.  And the Uranus Return at 84ish is like your reward for having tried to be cool & individuated your whole life long + you’ve had to do the Saturn shit as well.

Okay, so he is 2 degrees of Aqua born in 1930, St Lucia – what a life, his grandmothers descended from slaves, his father a Bohemian artist, he became a teenage theatre critic in Trinidad. And he’s got Moon in Scorpio….Mercury Retrograde (a LOT of poets are born when Mercury Retrograde – i need to get my imaginary astrological intern onto researching this) & DW has Venus, Mars +Saturn in Capricorn. God, anything in Cap makes peeps age well.  Pluto opposes from Cancer. Sex drive. Life drive. Primordial.

Neptune trines his Saturn which is just beautiful synergy for a successful and acclaimed poet – the easy combination of the Muse with the Sage, artistic talent with biz sense et al.  And Jupiter trines his Sun for a beautiful boost of luck + charisma.

This poem of his is SENSATIONAL and so apt for post-Full Moon in Pisces, with Pluto nearly Direct…And maybe, it’s how you feel at Uranus Return???

Love After Love by Derek Walcott
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Yes, you can indulge yourself during a Saturn transit but it will be on something like this – an alarm clock. So Saturn, so apt. I have been getting up most mornings at 5.30am to get everything done & i had this awful old bitch of an alarm clock that i’d gotten from the newsagency, thoughtlessly. It had an alarm noise that actually was alarming & was woefully inaccurate.  My Saturn revelation was along the lines of why not keep time (remember Saturn is aka Chronos/Kronos the God of Time) with something beautiful, accurate and maybe even spiritual.

Enter my new Now & Zen alarm clock.  Guys these things are amazing. And no they’re not paying me to say that, I ordered mine the other day and it arrived within a few days. It is said to aid in dream recall and proper brainwaves upon awakening by progressively chiming the Pythagoros endorsed E note and the ten minute cycle of increasingly frequent beautiful chimings equates to the Golden Mean.

“…The interval between chime strikes thus diminishes from within itself according to the Golden Mean. The self-accumulating growth which is the essence of the Golden Mean finds its most elegant natural expression in a golden spiral. A golden spiral is on which grows narrower as it turns inward. Nautilus shells, galaxies, whirlpools and even your fist are examples of golden spirals. The progession of the Zen Alarm Clock chime forms an audible golden spiral. The clock thus echoes nature’s expression of divine harmony as it provides for a progressive awakening.”

It is heaven & though this is the first morning i have used it, the dream recall & morning mood situation is already way enhanced. I love how it is at the haute end of Saturn in Virgo…all that cosmic precision.

If only it could come in a pinstripe, spikes-all-over version, this would be the perfect outfit for the Mars-Saturn Square…in effect until Tues midday, all timezones. It’s ramped up a bit by the Moon in Aries – a sign ruled by Mars.  What you want is an outfit that puts off predators – because you look so hard to digest, like a hedgehog – and encourages the  merely annoying to keep the fuq out of your aura for fear of being pricked. In the absence of such an outfit to say it all for you, this is the demeanour du jour. Sanguine composure like you Saturn’s Intern & work the Mars out via, well, work.

The Saturn-Uranus Opposition is ON again!

See above link for a more detailed explanation, if you desire it.

It was big last November, last Feb and it’s exact again in September. But I felt it strongly in mid-May, on the weekend when Saturn went direct. And I am feeling it now, in the week that Uranus goes Retrograde. You see – these two energies are moving back into their opposition. They’re ten degrees apart at the moment but are what is called “applying” at the moment.

Of course, you’re more sensitive to this little bit of astro-weirding if you have planets/vital points in the path of it. If you laughed in the face of Feb, maybe it’s just a cute quirk going on in your life. It’s especially big for all the Mutables – Gemini, Saggo, Pisces, Virgo & also Aquarians + Capricorns.

It’s like a tension between the values of Saturn – time-honoured tradition, the status quo – and the values of Uranus; freedom, emancipation from all limitations…even emotional loving bonds & sentiment. So Voice One might be saying in your mind something along the lines of “you’re too old” or “you can’t fund this” or that you aren’t qualified enough. Voice Two – the Uranian one is saying “accept no convention” and “fuq normality” or “do your own thing.”

The best result from the whole thing is to see-saw between the different systems of thinking and somehow honour both. eg; individuate but do your damned paperwork. You have to pay homage to Saturn in Virgo (structures, details) before you can go wafting off into grokking Uranian genius.

Neither Saturn nor Uranus like woolly thinking, naff sentiment or set-ups that are essentially clapped out but kept on witih out of weakness. So in that sense, they get along. Between now and September is an awesome time to follow your bliss but you need the Saturnine foundations to do something truly cool.

And watch the approach to tensions generated by this opposition where you identify too strongly with either side of the opposition; ‘bad’ Saturn = over-controlling, rigid and judgemental and ‘bad’ Uranus = a total raving flake, incapable of fitting into any society, out of control.

Lol, this is NOT about my Aquarius men again. No, no, NO. It’s actually about how even though Aquarius is not one of the classical ‘twin’ or ‘dual’ signs, a la Gemini & Pisces or even Sagg (half Wise Centaur-Sage, half back end of Horse), there are two different types of Aquarius. At least, such is the theory.

Before the discovery of Uranus (in 1781 and the thing was originally going to be called Herschel, after the discoverer, a Scorpio) Aquarius was said to be ruled by Saturn. So there was Capricorn ruled by Saturn and then Aquarius also ruled by Saturn only an Air sign.

The idea is that you have your whackjob Uranian kind of Aquarius who will simply not conform to any norm ever invented…just because. He/she is totally into freedom for all creatures & proves it on a daily basis, in one way or another.

And then you have your more austere sort of Saturnine Aquarian, who tends more toward the scientific & intellectual rigours of some lofty calling, rather than every day Uranian rebellion. They’re a bit more controlling and not into emo but often genius-like in some area. Saturnine Aquas keep their distance from me – the last one I met said to me: “Let me get this perfectly straight. You make your living from something that does not exist?”

So, I only know the Uranian ones, when they deign to beam down from where-ever it is Uranians zing off to. Also, I am not sure about this but i have noticed that a lot of Aquarians completely blossom after Saturn Return and in spectacular fashion.  Thoughts?

Q: What is the best placement for Saturn?

A: In someone else’s chart.

Lol & happy Saturn Direct. Note; The house where Saturn lurks in your chart is often the source of some pain in earlier life but becomes buffed up into your shining pride later, post-Saturn Return et al. Anyway, Saturn is stationing Direct & so tangible signs of the new era are all around you, ready or not. Two things; it would be apt to limit the Mercury Retro nostaglia/backward analysis as much as poss, brush away a tear, scrub up and get set to move on with courage & grace…Embrace the new thing with open arms.

And that note how Saturn even now is beginning to make the opposition with Uranus again so that sensation of having amazing Uranian visions & innovation that have to be balanced with an apparently relentless details/things-to-be-done/$$$/health maintenance mania is BACK & building. You can try to balance it all out with grace (the Security V.s. Intimacy thing or the Creative Vision v.s practical concerns) OR you can oscillate insanely between three day tequila & art jags and kombucha fuelled kundalini contemplation stints.

Go the Saturn-Uranus Opposition.

It is the astro-theme of 2009 & we all get to play it out in some way or another.  The next pass of it is not exact till early Feb but the two planets are merely a few degrees apart. This aspect is applying hard right now. The New Moon Eclipse on Jan 26 is in Aquarius – ruled by Saturn in the olden days & Uranus now. Fantastic new Uranian-Aquarian style visions beckon us into the future whilst Saturnine details demand to be honoured…Now. There is also an internal tug of war between giving a shit what the world thinks of one and the Uranian urge to give society the finger. But if the Saturn side of life (reputation, hard work, security needs, health, sleep, being decent) is not paid homage to, you can say ‘up yours’ to whomever you want but nobody will believe you. Uranian freedom is hard won but it’s fun. Everyday the Saturn-Uranus opposition arcs up: the diet or the big brainstorming lunch? The sedate relationship of tranquility or the bats but individuated romance that looks real bad on paper? Uranus implodes paradigms & structures that aren’t that real in the first place. But indulge in pointless rebellion under such stars & Saturn comes along to clobber one. The trick is – easy to type, I know – is balancing out both these wildly different astro-energies. Take your vitamins, get enough sleep, do your budget and only then do all the disorderly merde.

Does anyone have any useful Saturn-Uranus Opposition tips???
