Some say that it’s Halloween soon. Well, if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, it is totally NOT Halloween.  It is Beltane, – Beautiful Fire – the festival of fertility, summer & renewal.  Halloween is more like Samhain – the spooky start of colder weather, the veils between the worlds are at their thinnest and so on…You are naturally girding thyself for colder weather, dragging  out heaters etc: Pumpkins, scary ghostly themes, whatever. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere happy Samhain and many profound thoughts honouring those who have passed on into the next realm.

But Beltane is HOT.  The old Pagan festivals for Beltane involved – basically – random rooting around with a view to honouring Dionysus et al & it feels right, seasonally…less clothes, brighter weather, new beginnings sprouting all over the place. There are a few different schools of thought re when exactly Beltane is supposed to be celebrated. Some say it is the Full Moon in Taurus (or Scorpio if you are in England, America etc) which would mean November 3 this year.  Others say when the Sun is at 15 degrees of Taurus or Scorpio – May or Nov 15 this year and others say Oct 30/Nov 1.  I favour the latter because it is 8 degrees of Scorpio and thus my Midheaven which means i can claim spurious witchy-goo goo links to Beltane.

Actually, I have a party on Beltane – the Scorpio Sex Academic’s birthday. I intend to wait until the Moon has passed Pluto (this evening Sydney time) and suggest she organises a Maypole for everyone to dance around. Or, this being a southern hemisphere Beltane, a novemberpole. Something suitably phallic at any rate.  Other than that, you surely all know the Beltane rituals by now: Clean house, get flowers, plant something highly scented and impractical, get new undies, smudge/space clear, make optimistic summery vows, get drunk and have some sex. Ish.

Deities of Beltane, should you be interested: Venus, Ishtar, Freya, Priapus, Pan, Dionysus, Flora and any nature god/goddess.

The Moon loves to be in the sign of Cancer, sign of her rulership…Despite all the Full Moonie merde the next few days one can be productively emo, sooky goo-goo with loved ones/loyal confidantes and deeply aware. Think also herbal Zen Hippy as way to cope with the intensifying of the Saturn-Uranus opposition. Actually, i just thought of this; the combo of Mars conjunct Neptune and the Cancerian Moon and Venus going retrograde etc make this the ideal weekend to practice Haute Meditation…Yes.

Download something haute-hippy and Zen Noire from Sequoia & see how far you can ramp up your meditation et al. Saggos will naturally astral travel the furtherest whilst Leos will be upgraded to connecting with a supreme being the most quickly, because the SB feels Leo can relate to the vagaries of Supreme Beinghood. The Cancerian Moon is also always heaven for sharing fave fairy tales and myths with children…

Moonflower (or how the Moonhorses came to Japan)…is the sweetest little fairy tale…

“Hundreds of years before the Europeans developed rubber, the Aztecs mixed the juice of moonflower with tree latex to produce an elastic they made into rubber bands, hammers, and balls for a ritual game. A relative of the morning glory, moonflowert has its cousin’s heart-shaped leaves and vining habit, but instead of greeting the Sun, like the morning glory does, the flowers of this Moon plant open in late afternoon and stay open for one night, which makes them wonderful in Moon gardens. They are pollinated by moths drawn to their scent, which humans can smell too, if they have the genes for it (not everyone can perceive the scent of some white flowers).  The presence of moths in turn can attract bats, Hekate’s friends. Try inhaling the scent of moonflowers before doing divination or before going to bed in order to produce prophetic dreams…”  From here…

Fascinating re how some peeps don’t have the genes to smell some white flowers???  But i would be wary re even copping a whiff of Moonflower now, having read this…from here

“…Highly toxic! WARNING! These are some of the names for Datura: Jimson Weed, Moonflower, Devil’s Weed, Hell’s Bells. Devil’s Cucumber, Thorn-Apple, Devil’s Trumpet, Pricklyburr…”

Does anyone know about this stuff??

It would be so anti-Saturn-in-Virgo/Pluto in Cap to addle one’s brains sniffing Moonflower scent in the garden under the nearly-Full Cancerian Moon…BUT then again, you can buy Moonflower body wash (?!) on Amazon“…Used as a psychedelic in nordic traditions, the moonflower helps you find refuge. It is a blue escape, in the cold clear waters. with notes of boronia, freesia, apple blossom and birch, moonflower lit in the background will cause a welcome moment of recluse….”

But I am serious about the meditation though; most amazing weekend for it in yonks & may even help with the retro-Venus romantic nostalgia, if it strikes.

And another ancient Moon myth; the Babylon Moon God – Sin.

“My uncle’s lapses into insobriety had no vice about them, they were purely therapeutic. The fact is he was following a new regime for perfect health, much in vogue at that time, he assured us, on the Continent.

‘The aim is to warm up your glands with a series of jolts. The worst thing in the world for the body is to settle down and lead a quiet little life of regular habits; if you do that it soon resigns itself to old age and death. Shock your glands, force them to react, startle them back into youth, keep them on tip-toe so they never know what to expect next and they have to keep young and healthy to deal with all the surprises.’

Accordingly he ate in turns like Ghandi and like Henry VIII, went for ten mile walks or lay in bed all day, shivered in a cold bath or sweated in a hot one. Nothing in moderation. ‘It is also very important to get drunk now and then.’   Davey, however, was too much of a one for regular habits to be irregular other than regularly, so he always got drunk on the Full Moon. Having once been under the influence of Rudolph Steiner, he was still very conscious of the waxing and waning of the moon, and had, I believe, a vague idea that waxing and waning of the capacity of his stomach coincided with its periods.”
