227559Pan – Georges Barbier

Oh well Virgoans are about to go absolutely ape. Not only is Saturn out of their sign so they can go nano-seconds at a time without guilting themselves, they’ve got asteroid Pan (asteroid number 4450) and Dionysus (asteroid number 3671) in their sign with NO Saturn to be a spoilsport banging on about carbs post 6pm, liver function, sane adult relationships and so on. Pan and Dionysus are the good time guys of the Zodiac.

What else…Ceres is close to the Sun in Scorpio…I so need to keep a closer eye on Ceres and in fact, it is one of my 2010 resolutions. Monitor Ceres.

Circe is in late Scorpio squaring Neptune – yay! Psycho-sexual flirtations and bewitchery…Venus, Sappho, Pallas & Saturn all lurk together in lovely Libra – v.good brainiac and thinking weekend if one is  not too distracted by all the pandemonium.  Lilith, Psyche and Pandora join the Auspicious Aqua-Weirding.  There is BIG emphasis on Libra and Aquarius this weekend – high minded relationships, free love and new ideas infusing into everything.

Ishtar is in early Saggo trine – ta-dah! – Mars in Leo.  Hot. The Queen and her Warrior. Primordial life force rules.

pandorasboxJohn William Waterhouse – Pandora

Mars is about six degrees away from a fantastique trine with Uranus, exact the week after next and one that will manifest all sorts of magical opportunities and strange synchronicity. Uranian wierding is always riddled with omens and synchronicity. Mars really revs up Uranus. A trine is considered ‘easy’.  But in the meantime, apart from that and Mercury going Direct, there really isn’t that much going on. Which is kinda nice, after all those Eclipses, Pluto Direct & Saturn-Uranus etc.

Of course, if you bung some asteroids in the mix – voila – a party.  I don’t usually work with asteroids for all manner of reasons but my idea is this: I throw some of what’s happening in asteroid-land at you & we see if they’re apt or not.

* Lilith, the Bitch-Goddess is nearly in Aquarius. Now that ought to lead to some outrageous female behaviour. Especially when she gets around to opposing Mars in Leo in November. Hot! Maybe.

* Circe is in Scorpio.  Conjunct my Midheaven, actually. It’s interesting but whenever Circe is strong in my chart, my divination (Tarot) skills intensify.

* Asteroid Lust (number 4386 if you want to play with it in the Astrodienst Extended Chart Options thingie) is on the North Node in Capricorn…Hmm. I very rarely look at this asteroid, though it DOES show up in synastry (chart comparison) between peeps who really fancy one another an awful lot. So what could Asteroid Lust conjunct the North Node mean? Lust leads you to your authentic destiny?  Lust blasts away jaded elements of  your past. Past life psych flashes via lust?

* Pandora is conjunct Jupiter. Meh. I don’t know how to interpret that so let’s free-associate. One could open up a Pandora’s Box of issues, ideas – could even be Promethean???  Isn’t there a feminist/more goddessy/less patriarchal version of the Pandora story someplace?? Like she wasn’t just nosy – she was more like Prometheus stealing fire to give to humanity? As opposed to a girl being blamed (like Eve!) for unleashing all the demons etc on humanity? So Pandora conjunct Jupiter – Jupiter amplifies whatever it’s near…Pandora cosying up to benevolent Jupiter = forgiveness/redemption for secrets?  Let’s see!

2706056510_f2ba0e937cI love the look of Deadly Nightshade aka BellaDonna…Beautiful Lady….I can never figure out how it is meant to be the same family as the comfort-spud, the potato!

“…It is of a cold nature; in some it causeth sleep; in others madness, and, shortly after, death,” wrote Culpepper.

A la Wikipedia...

“…It has a long history of use as a medicine, cosmetic, and poison. Before the Middle Ages, it was used as an anesthetic for surgery, and it was used as a poison by early men, ancient Romans, including the wives of two Emperors, and by Macbeth of Scotland before he became a Scottish King.

The genus name “atropa” comes from Atropos, one of the three Fates in Greek mythology, and the name “atropa bella donna” is derived from an admonition in Italian and Greek meaning “do not betray a beautiful lady…”

I tried to get some when i was 13, because some bodice-ripper i was reading had the heroine dropping BellaDonna drops in her eyes to make them sparkle & the pupils dilate, apparently madly arousing to men.  And – she claimed in this book – to make her see more magically.  Deadly Nightshade is also called Devil’s Cherries and Dwayberry…The latter deriving from the French word for grief.

“…The apples of Sodom are held to be related to this plant, and the name Belladonna is said to record an old superstition that at certain times it takes the form of an enchantress of exceeding loveliness, whom it is dangerous to look upon, though a more generally accepted view is that the name was bestowed on it because its juice was used by the Italian ladies to give their eyes greater brilliancy, the smallest quantity having the effect of dilating the pupils of the eye.

Another derivation is founded on the old tradition that the priests used to drink an infusion before they worshipped and invoked the aid of Bellona, the Goddess of War…”

From Botanicals

Mandrake is another version of it & was said to be the plant from which the enchantress Circe made her wine.

A la the asteroid Circe rave the other day, it’s so cool that i just came upon this! It was in The Goddess Companion, by Patricia Monaghan, one of my fave books ever…

First she quotes Homer & then there is her rave;

“Then we met the magician Circe. Lions and mountain wolves walked peacefully with her, enchanted by her presence. They came up to the sailors, tails wagging, making friendly gestures, fawning like dogs do when their owners return home from dining out, fawning like dogs do when they hope for treats; so these wild animals acted, animals with claws and fangs, in the presence of that enchantress…”

Homer – The Odyssey.

“Like many other powerful ancient goddesses, the Greek divinity Circe was later demonized, turned into a figure that evoked fear and distrust. Originally, Circe was a sun goddess, at home on her bright island whose circular shape was that of the solar sphere – an image echoed in her name as well. But as newcomers to her land rejected the feminine power she embodied, Circe was demoted to a voluptuous temptress-witch, who threatened the wandering Ulysses. Yet her original power was never utterly lost; it shines through the words of ancient poets like Homer.”

Circe was an enchantress who had a year long relationship with the hero-warrior Ulysses. It was a bit complicated as she first tried to put a spell on him & she also turned his team of trusty helpers into swine. Plus he was married. The accounts vary but her father was the Sun-God Helios/Apollo & her mother either the Goddess of Witches – Hecate or a sea nymph. Circe was an accomplished mistress of metamorphing, a skilled herbalist, necromancer and illusionist. The term “holy moly” is linked to her tale. Moly is an old name for the flower Snowdrop, the essence of which Ulysses used as an antidote to her witchy potion.

Astrologically, she is asteroid number 34. You can use the Extended Chart Options on Astrodienst to see where Circe is in your chart or anyone elses and by transit. Not much is said about asteroid Circe in astrology – she would clearly be an influence of magic, cunning & libido. She is loosely trine my Ascendent but i weirdly found asteroid Circe to be present by transit a lot…Theoretically, she’d come in handy for betwitching men…At the moment she’s at 10 Libra. A man with Circe near his Moon, Venus or Descendent would find himself unfathomably drawn to witches.
