Return Of The Lost City – by Clive James

How far was Plato free of that “inflamed
Community” he said we should avoid?
Sofas, incense and hookers: these he named
Among the habits not to be enjoyed,
And if you did, you ought to be ashamed.
But can’t we tell, by how he sounds annoyed,
That his Republic, planned on our behalf,
Was where his own desires had the last laugh,

If only as the motor for his sense
Of discipline? Even the dreams were policed,
By the Nocturnal Council. Such immense
Powers of repression! What would be released
Without them? The Republic was intense:
The fear of relaxation never ceased.
Hence the embargo on all works of art,
However strict in form, that touched the heart.

No poetry. No poets! No, not one —
Not even Homer, if he were to be
Reborn — could be admitted, lest the sun
Set on the hard-won social harmony,
And that obscene night-life which had begun
In man’s first effort at society,
Atlantis, should come flooding back, the way
The sea did, or so story-tellers say.

But Plato knew that they’d say anything:
For money or applause or just a share
Of an hetaera, they would dance and sing
And turn the whole deal into a nightmare.
The very prospect left him quivering
With anger. There is something like despair
Haunting the author of the ideal state,
A taunting voice he heard while working late:

Atlantis made you. It is what you know,
Deep down. Atlantis and its pleasures drive
Your thoughts. Atlantis never lets you go.
Atlantis is where you are most alive

Yes, even you, you that despise it so,
When all mankind would love it to arrive
Again, the living dream you try to kill
By making perfect. But you never will.

Thank you O Full Moon in Pisces, for all those awesome insights & fresh vows.

Now, the gentleman above is Nobel Prize winning poet & playwright Derek Walcott – the pic is grainy as I tore it out of the mag and scanned it but he is 79. And it’s current!  So he has racked up two Saturn Returns and is just a few years off from having his Uranus Return – in Aries and at age 84. Yes, there has been a bit of scandal about him - debated at length – but i was SO impressed by the vision of still-happy, healthy & hot-at-70-something successful poet that i looked at his astro…

Because given that, thank you Saturn, aging/maturity is apparently some sort of stupid condition of birth, it’s awesome to see examples such as Derek W, above.  And the Uranus Return at 84ish is like your reward for having tried to be cool & individuated your whole life long + you’ve had to do the Saturn shit as well.

Okay, so he is 2 degrees of Aqua born in 1930, St Lucia – what a life, his grandmothers descended from slaves, his father a Bohemian artist, he became a teenage theatre critic in Trinidad. And he’s got Moon in Scorpio….Mercury Retrograde (a LOT of poets are born when Mercury Retrograde – i need to get my imaginary astrological intern onto researching this) & DW has Venus, Mars +Saturn in Capricorn. God, anything in Cap makes peeps age well.  Pluto opposes from Cancer. Sex drive. Life drive. Primordial.

Neptune trines his Saturn which is just beautiful synergy for a successful and acclaimed poet – the easy combination of the Muse with the Sage, artistic talent with biz sense et al.  And Jupiter trines his Sun for a beautiful boost of luck + charisma.

This poem of his is SENSATIONAL and so apt for post-Full Moon in Pisces, with Pluto nearly Direct…And maybe, it’s how you feel at Uranus Return???

Love After Love by Derek Walcott
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Well, I love that the Ancient Mayans aced the Venus cycles absolutely yonks ago – without telescopes et al, they figured that the Morning Star & the Evening Star – Venus a.k.a. Xolotl – were the same planet, even though appearing on different sides of the sky.

But so far as the future goes, I’m  backing Ray Kurzweil,  a futurist, entrepeneur & mathmatician who says we are about to experience a fabulous & mind-boggling event known as The Singularity.  I was reading a profile of the gent this morning & I knew within nanoseks that he is an Aquarius.  Even apart from The Singularity, all the Aqua indicators were there…

* He invented a program called FatKat – Financial Accelerating Transactions from Kurzweil Adaptive Technologies – that plays the stockmarket for him so that he has more time for other projects. He also invented an automatic poetry generator called the Cybernetic Poet. He has a part-time employee purely to manage his vitamins and nutritional supplements. He is currently working on nanobots that will be injected inside the body to extend human lifespan. Has not consumed sugar for decades but drinks red wine daily, for the reservaterol.

And yah! He is Aquarius – Feb 12 1948 so also with Saturn-Pluto in Leo & Uranus trining his Aqua Sun.

I can’t quite grok what The Singularity is all about…only that amazing technology will be harnessed for the good of ALL – ie; feed the whole world & revolutionise all that ails us now. This would, of course, be a wonderful manifestation of innovative Uranus in gung-ho, pioneering Aries, Pluto in Capricorn & Neptune in Pisces….All of which is upon us soon.

So, next time someone grizzles to me about the Mayans, 2012 movie et al – I shall say ‘but what about The Singularity?’ and be done with it.

“…coins and statues have been discovered at a cemetery near of the Temple of Taposiris Magna in Egypt, a possible site for the remains of Antony and Cleopatra. Last month, it used radar to find three deep shafts leading to three “spots of interest” under the temple, the Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities said….More here.

Antony And Cleopatra

Together they stood watching on the terrace
As Egypt fell asleep under a stifling heaven
And the Nile rolled its fatness down to cleave
Its own black delta, to Sais or to Bubastis

The Roman soldier, now a prisoner caught
Nursing a sleepy child, under the weight of his cuirass
Feels the luxurious body he embraces
Bend and give way on his triumphant heart.

Turning her face, pale in brown hair, to meet
This man half-drunk on her invincible scents,
Now she holds up her mouth and her clear eyes.

Bent over her, the Imperator sees
In her wide pupils starrd with golden points
An immeasurable sea with ships in flight.

fleurIt is the birthday of Charles Baudelaire, author of the stupendously stunningly sensual Les Fleurs Du Mal, fave poet of goths et al.

He is Aries, of course, and thus cursed with a shocker of a Madonna-Whore complex, as Aries men so often are, poor things.

Baudelaire could go from writing stuff like this;

“Whether we are in darkness and alone,
or in the street and one among the crowd
her spirit dances like a torch held high,
saying; ‘By my beauty I command,
love only beauty for my sake – I am
the Guardian Angel, Madonna and the Muse.’

To THIS

“Daughter of darkness, slattern deity
rank with musk and nicotine, the spawn
of filthy covens or a shaman’s rite…”

I could quote Baudelaire for hours BUT tacky & bimbonic query of the day; Which Sun Sign Has The Most Overt Madonna-Whore Complex? And noooo I am not being sexist. Women can have one too, can’t they? I read the other day that IMS – Irritable Male Syndrome is actually to do with testosterone and far more prevalent than PMT.

seuss_cat_in_the_hat_fish_stickerToday is the birthday of Dr Seuss a.k.a. Theodor Geisel…ultra-Pisces & surrealist genius.

He was born bang on a bigtime Lunar Eclipse with Mars conjunct Jupiter at Zero degrees Aries (super exuberant and inventive) square Neptune in Cancer (the children’s poet & visionary)…His Mercury in Aquarius conjunct Saturn (!) sextile Uranus and trine Pluto. That Saturn conjunct seems oddly austere for someone so brilliantly playful but consider also his enormous output, professionalism and the longevity of his work, his brand.

My fave Dr Seuss & still sends my teenage son all shivery even now is the one about the pants with nobody in them…I think it’s supposed to be sort of an allegory about how silly most scary stories are…?
