Today is the birthday of Brigitte Helm, star of the sensational 1920s movie Metropolis…

It was released on January 10 1927, with the interesting astro-signature of Jupiter opposite Neptune in Leo, Uranus in Pisces quincunxing the Neptune in Leo. Apt for a sci-fi masterpiece with massive socio-cultural import but that would take many decades to be fully appreciated…no?

Does anyone else love this movie?

Note also how fabulous Neptune in Leo – 1915 to 1929 – was for cinema? All those stars born.

Wow, is it International Woman’s Day or what?

It’s obviously really cool that Kathryn Bigelow has just become the first woman director to win an Oscar - is that right? – and all and I am thrilled.

Some astro-points both deep and bimbonic, in no particular order of importance.

* She is a Saggo and her Ex, James Cameron – who was competing against her in these Academy Awards with the film Avatar – is a Leo. He must be spewing. What a Mars Retrograde statement.

* She currently has Jupiter bang on her North Node. That’s an officially auspicious moment that will determine your entire future.

* She also currently has Saturn on her Mars! See, Saturn can be nice!  And Saturn-Mars (once every 29 years only peeps) is v.aptly signified by a movie about men in combat, a gruelling and intense shoot & recognition by peers after a phase of insanely hard work and vision.

* She is about to have 2nd Saturn Return (born on Nov 27 1951) and great demons, she looks amazing.

* Pluto is currently squaring her Jupiter – one of the great mogul transits.

This  is astronaut Steve Robinson, playing guitar in the new space station. I love this guy! He’s also an artist and he plays in an all-astronaut band.

His c.v. is well, um, impressive + he appears to be single. Peeps who like your space, this could be JUST your guy. He’s away a lot and is not, obviously, the kind of guy to ring up grizzling.

But what about his astrology, I assume you are thinking.

The space-gent is a Scorpio and he has Venus conjunct Saturn in Scorpio.

So, fear not, he likes his space too! He would take intimacy very seriously. When not in space. What else?

Jupiter-Pluto in Leo so he is like a touchstone for his generation of baby-boomers: Space exploration & rock and roll…Uranus in Leo square his Sun – individuated the max and showy about it too.

He’s also got the North Node in Sagittarius. The North Node is the Destiny you need to manifest…Let’s just simplify Saggo right down to travel, fresh horizons and new vistas, a world without borders & voila…

Sam Worthington has about a trillion planets in Leo, even though he LOOKS like an Earth Sign rising dude. Virgo?  That would put all his Leo stuff in the 12th House – i was talking someone the other day who’d just met him and she said when he sold everything and went to Hollywood, he took one bag of clothes, the Bible and The Alchemist. That’s 12th House. Or savvy media-skills.

And I love how he always sounds Leonic in interviews: a non-stop I-Am-The-Greatest rant-boast that’s actually really inspirational.

Anyway, he is apparently up to play DRACULA in Dracula Year Zero, a sort of bio-pic of Vlad The Impaler in which we get to see his more humane side. I guess if Sam is playing him, there will definitely be a hell of a lot more compassion for the gentleman. I just tried to post a pic of Vlad The I and the browser crashed. Unusual. Spooky. No Vlad pic. And I had a cold chill looking at it. Yick! Sam please don’t be the original Dracula. I don’t think it fits the Leo Qi.I think he should play a hunky ANGEL. See Angels Are The New Vampires.

Leo vampires should be camp and like George Hamilton.  Previously, it was established that Aquarius is the best sign for vampires. Like Count Duckula – still my fave.

Today is the birthday of the genius crime writer Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr Ripley) but wow she seems like she was a piece of work:

“…She drank a quart of gin a day. She left the United States to live in Europe because of what she called “the Negro problem” — by which she did not mean discrimination against Negroes, but the civil rights movement that had Negroes demanding their rights. She took tips left on restaurant tables. She’d drive 60 miles to get a cheaper spaghetti dinner. She called Hitler’s extermination policy a “semicaust”, because only half the world’s Jews died. A mental health professional, observing her for only a few minutes, pegged her as a psychopath. Another writer described her as “a black cloud.” Her own assessment: “If I were to relax and become human, I could not bear my life.”…”

Oh and she kept pet snails…On looking at her Wiki, I don’t think i have read more sustained neg-press re one person not officially evil. She loathed astrology but her chart is here & there is nothing majorly obnoxious that leaps out from it; Mars-Uranus conjunct & square Saggo Rising? Pfft. Loads of people have that and it just makes them sexy & erratic. Unconventional & in your face about it. I suppose it could turn the Sagg Rising candour a bit bonkers. Her Chiron squares Pluto but that is like a generation. Thoughts?

Is there a character like this – of whatever astro – in anyone’s life?  I’ve known a few doozies but not for long, thankfully and what’s interesting is how they get talked about A LOT. Because their personal vileness is often such that peeps have to sit about processing the person, at length.  Also, if you read something quite vile about an author or an artist, does it affect your enjoyment of their work??  My theory is that the Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancerians, Libra, Capricorn) will go OFF a talent if they deem him/her beneath them or too dysfunctional. It’s not moralistic. They just can’t get into it.

Persephone – Krista Huot

You know, I am sure, the Persephone myth? Persephone a.k.a. Proserpina (the Roman – think Aphrodite v.s. Venus for the difference) is innocently picking flowers one Spring day. Tempted by a narcissus, she also encounters the Hades a.k.a. Pluto and is then (depending on which version of the story you are reading) is either abducted or lured into the underworld where she winds up Queen of the Underworld.

It’s a totally complex tale with multiple themes & richness. If it resonates, you can actually fling two asteroids into your chart – Persephone (asteroid 399) and Prosperina (asteroid 26) What does their sign/house placement and any aspects mean? I don’t know!!!  I haven’t looked into them…This is going to be it.

I did found one description that had Persephone as signifying a sort of stupidity, naivety and sort of bumbling into the underworld style urges. Great. Because I have her conjunct Neptune in my tenth so it’s amazing i can even sober up long enough from my underworld bumblings to write scopes etc. Okay, lol.

Apart from being a folk tale to explain the seasons, Persephone’s story is so clearly also like that of Eve – the loss of innocence…and what’s more the desired loss of it. Eve eats the apple. Persephone eats the pomegranate. It’s also a tale of rebirth – Persephone goes into the underworld and learns all sorts of things so it’s like the story of Inanna/Ishtar’s trip into the underworld and subsequent triumphant rebirth.

Right now Persephone is at 10 Pisces & Proserpina at 28 Capricorn. Hmm. So this New Moon Eclipse on Friday will be conjunct Venus AND Prosperina…a rebirth indeed.  I am going to take a punt and say that either of these asteroids have to do with where you may seem serene & untroubled but where you have in fact faced trials…you’ve swum in underground streams…Where you’ve munched on some forbidden fruit and liked it, maybe.

In the story of Psyche (asteroid 16) -  considered an essential metaphor for women’s psych development by Carl Jung – one of Psyche’s tasks is to pop down into the underworld and collect a sample of Persephone’s fabulous beauty cream.  My god, is there a Jungian in the house??

Another thing to think about: Could/would either of these asteroids operate like a sort of Lady Pluto by transit???  Does seeing this New Moon Eclipse as being tied in with Venus AND Proserpina make you feel about it any differently?

Proserpina Dante Gabriel Rossetti

He’s been apparently blissfully married for years but a new biography out claims major Seventies star Warren Beatty had over 12,000 lovers – not counting the “casual gropes”etc. He essentially averaged a woman a day for 35 years. Legendarily insatiable, gorgeous and vain but NOT a Leo, lol.  His astro is actually really interesting & illuminating as to what sort of (astrological) equipment a pantsman could actually have…

He’s said to be 28 Virgo Rising but i reckon that’s bogus. He LOOKS like absolutely Libra Rising to me, cupid’s bow & goo-goo eyes and all. He’d only have to have been born half an hour or so later to be Libra Rising. And that would mean this annoying book (for him) would be coming out with Saturn on his Ascendent…makes total sense.

He’s an Aries – Sun conjunct Mercury in Aries so bigmouth the great & tres cocky.  Mars is in Saggo – that’s a very youthful, enthusiastic and gung-ho sort of a Mars. He’d bound off after the deed, friendly & no angst what-so-ever. No games. Extreme candour.

But the really cool bit is this: Moon in Scorpio conjunct Lilith opposite Venus conjunct Uranus in Taurus and they’re all aspected by Pluto. Not only insatiable but inventive too and not even a  hint of a Madonna-Whore complex. How there be with Moon conjunct Lilith??? Venus-Uranus in a hetero-guy is the gift to act as sort of a muse to individuated or eccentric women.

Jean Seberg as Joan/Jeanne of Arc

Some say that today is the birthday of Jeanne D’Arc (or as the British who executed her would  have it, Joan) and others – such as Astro-Databank – prefer the birthdate of January 15. Either way, she was certainly a Capricorn, rising from her peasant birth to become a religious and military leader, icon, martyr & finally saint…And all as a teenager. Poor thing.

I love what the Gemini novelist Francoise Sagan said of her: “I always believe things are going to work out. Every time I see a film about Joan of Arc I’m convinced she’ll get away with it. It’s the only way to get through life.”

The major astro in the Astro-Databank chart? Mars, Uranus & the North Node in Aquarius opposed by Lilith in Leo & trining Pluto + Saturn.  Major visioneering and belief in manifest, utopian destiny with that lot…Neptune opposite Mercury…voices? Delusions?

Quick question for the Astro-Fiends: Does anyone have Neptune in tight aspect to Mercury & how do you experience it? Ghosts? Dreams? Visions? I have them in quincunx & it can be very interesting but erractic. eg: excellent e.s.p. but not on call.

Aphrodite – Sacred Earth Designs

Goddesses In Every Woman is a really interesting read, blending feminist philosophy with Jungian psych & mythology to essentially help women figure out which archetypes are strong within them. I was really only interested in the Aphrodite (aka Venus, Ishtar, Inanna etc) chapter but made myself read the rest & was SO shocked at the section on Vesta that i really don’t know if i can bring myself to blog about the asteroid again.

It was the bit about how Vestal Virgins in Ancient Rome were punished if they ’strayed’ – seriously awful stuff – there is a bit here.

I mean, really, is the asteroid that important?

How fun!

You know the Mars-Venus trine building now and referred to below?

Well, I just realised that it is a bit more complicated & enchanted than even that.  I mean, Mars-Venus magic is quite intense as it is.

But asteroid Circe is conjunct Venus and so the Enchantress-Witch will be trining Mars too. Womanly wiles, anybody?

And Dark Moon Lilith is in Aquarius, moving into an opposition with Mars. So Venus has some powerful backing.

Ladies, you can have a good time (okay, if you are an Astro-Fiend) by comparing your Moon with your Dark Moon a.k.a. Lilith. Is there any significant link between the two? Could they each be said to reflect different facets of your femininity? Do you have your own little Madonna-Whore complex going on? Two distinct different types of female friendships? Repressed/shadow sides of your womanhood? Perfectly integrated “good” and “bad” you?
