Vogue Does The Zap Zone

Wow is this my fave Saggo Supermodel – Milla Jovovich – holding up a “protest placard by Jenny Holzer, fab feminist conceptual artist and major Leo?

Amaze, right?   It is also utterly Zap Zone themed – like yes, the geopolitical and economic structure we’re accustomed to is going to hell in a Pluto in Capricorn handbasket but we are still Vogue Italia, damn it all; fierce, fab and fuq off to the haters.

Surrealism is always relevant.

I see also a hint of Dark Moon Goddess Lilith in here. She’s the original lady in red, Adam’s first “wife” before Eve and radical biblical troublemaker.

The word “mundane” is sensational – it always makes me think of Anima Mundi - the World Soul – a concept cherished by the eco-aware, Pantheists, Vegans and similar souls – this also:

mundane (adj.)
mid-15c., “of this world,” from O.Fr. mondain “of this world, worldly, earthly, secular;” also “pure, clean; noble, generous” (12c.), from L.L. mundanus “belonging to the world” (as distinct from the Church), in classical Latin “a citizen of the world, cosmopolite,” from mundus “universe, world,” lit. “clean, elegant”; used as a translation of Gk. khosmos (see cosmos) in its Pythagorean sense of “the physical universe” (the original sense of the Greek word was “orderly arrangement”). Latin mundus also was used of a woman’s “ornaments, dress,” and is related to the adjective mundus “clean, elegant” (used of women’s dress, etc.). Related: Mundanely.   Online Etymology Dictionary

  1. man i LOVE jenny holzer. I switched right back on to her a few weeks ago and she appears in this months POP magazine as well, “men do not protect you any more.” i think jenny is like a natural mars in scorpio. when youre weary, feeling small, when tears are in your eyes…turn to jenny holzer for a reality check. check out the survival series of truisms. unbelievable.

  2. the mundane is also just mundane- its still a ‘comment’ : vogue IS lacking
excitement and very DULL.Likes the same old same old.
“support the unimaginative,eh?”-no wonder lamey gaga grogan does so well in these ‘areas’.
vogue is backing the old old ‘fuq the haters’? no surprise there.
no progression. “fuq the haters= i don’t like thinkingat all,let alone deeply”
not one of jenny holzer’s better comments.bimbo leo got on her emperor’s new clothes.
mila j is too beautiful and trancendent for vogue’s dumbing down.
such a weird mix on here.
high wanky fashion and heartfelt astrology.

    • “fuq the haters= i don’t like thinking at all,let alone deeply”

Don’t know if you’re Australian, but this also strikes me as the Australian approach.

Must say I tend to think the sign should perhaps read “Support the status quo”, as doing so has worked very well in Vogue’s favour, (even while they make the claim to be so very avant garde.)

Number one rule in advertising; where possible use an image of a sexy beauty in a RED dress. So 10/10 to Vogue Italia.

      • Sorry, I may have read that wrong, but did you just call all Australians wilfully ignorant as a response to criticism of Mystic’s blog?

        • !

I read that and thought OMG that’s tantamount to a declaration of war – time to call off the free trade agreements

but look, there’s a stellium in the 9th everything’s gonna be ok.

          http://www.astro.com/nat/natau_e.htm

although the date and time used for that chart has been debated at length and I use the one that shifts it all forward a house – but there’s still a stellium in the 9th whichever way you slice that pie.

I wonder if link is referring to the ‘no worries’ ethos, which to more introspective personalities is sometimes read as ‘don’t go too deep’ ?

          • hey when i said ‘fuq the haters’ up there, it was meant to be channelling vogue italia – they know they can’t ignore whats going on so they are trying to get with it so msg to their readers is yes global unemployed youth might soon be riotting in the streets of europe – because of what has been done to their prospects etc etc but you can Still be fabulous, red frock, sexy etc etc. vogue italia consistently support a whole range of artists but they in turn are funded by advertisers, it is v.difficult. Interesting times and all that. but pls no name calling or bickering here!

            • LOL I read that as vogue was serving up MSG to the readers for a minute and was confused – some kind of relational art?

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relational_art

They’re out the back cooking up something that will make the readers thirsty so they can see what happens? Faces dessicated like crocodile handbags?

and Hey! just in case there’s any doubt mine was an effort to draw attention to the amazing and learned stellium in the 9th of the nation. And the fact that different cultures DO have different psyches.

I’m libran – try to bring balance and then divert attention to something lovely. Is it wrong to say I LOVE when you intervene? It’s totally virile.

            • have you heard about the french women who wore cardboard hats when the nazis held paris as their way of saying fuq the haters?

  3. Hi mm, I just want to say, again, how absolutely wonderful yourdaily emails are, I find I’m often more in alignment with these than the horoscopes and today’s have just helped stop thinking I’m a love zombie, and that’s a good thing! Because I do not plan to be one!

I think loving the mundanity or banality is about growing up I think its very Saturn…

    • Ditto the daily emails. They’re fabulous. Now if I could just get Florence and the Machine’s ‘Hurricane Drunk’–”I brace myself ‘cos I know it’s going to hurt.” Going out and drinking myself to death . . . well I’d fall down and throw up before I died. Not very dignified. . . . .

        • Also:
Bonus points to Vogue for featuring the work of a woman artist.
Would have gotten more points for featuring Pussy Riot. Even more if said model was curvier. The day such mags start featuring a VARIETY of different female body types, ethnicitie and features is the day they get my respect. I understand it’s actually difficult for them due to evil designers/companies who would pull their advertising if the model didn’t meet their specs, but still…what with the bright young conscious things on the up and coming…c’mon people! Get behind it!

              • yes, but will they offend too many advertisers? will believe it when it happens. Vogue, schmogue. We’re still vogue italia says it all, Mystic: they are attempting minor accommodations to the zap zone, but let’s face it: haute couture is an industry built on greeed and rampant inequalty. Without those things, there woudn’t be women who could pay more for a handbag than most of us spend on a car, or rent for a whole year.

                • there are advertisers who don’t pay for their ads in those realms because it makes the publication look good if they’re in it.

      • Ooh, have to respond to that as I am personally very fond of that song, even when happy!!. Fuq dignified, i say, as far as musical expression is concerned. I love the fact that Flo does real people, real feelings, real responses to pain. I love her honesty, but even more so the fact that her chord progressions and wildly ambitious instrumentation completely blow my very neptunian ascendant and 5th house moon away.

Millions out there obviously resonate with lyrics that express a desire to go out on a bender of some kind (name your poison – shopping, drugs, booze, whatever) after being rejected by someone that meant a huge amount to them.

At least she tells herself, after seeing her ex kissing his new love at the gig (where it appears, given lyrics, that seeing him was the last thing she expected) “at least things can;t get any worse”. So it ain’t a total pity party.

For my money, there’s room not only for music that pours pop psych (a la the Secret) down our throats, but for any music that make us feel that we ain’t alone in any of the crazy albeit temporary feelings we feel – be they celebratory, or nihilistic while grieving. You need to feel the nihilism, sometimes, if it is there, and face it, before you can deal with it.

Spare us a world in which real creative expression of real pain and the truth of the messy human psyche with all its warts and self-deteating tendencies is looked down apon, Link! There’s enough pressure for us all to be perfect coming from OUTSIDE of the arts, after all, so the day that musos have to be role models will be the day music, and the hugely important function it plays, dies.

  4. Embracing the mundane, its very feminine anarchist, don’t you think? BTW – our anarchy badges for the Nuns of Anarchy photo shoot arrived today. My girl held hers up and said “I’m the first fan of anarchy!!” I think she means anarchy’s number one fan. What kid isn’t down with a little anarchy? lol

  5. MM can you reference where you got ur word derivatives from please. I just love words and I’m always looking for new sources. Yours is a cracker! Love ur work Mystic…

  6. I love bold leonine statements and red dresses!!!

Yesterday, I was looking at a poster for Milla Jovovich’s upcoming film release and again she is sci-fi feminista heroine. Love her work.

    Love Vogue Italia.

  7. Mundane as a term now generally used alongside things like ordinary, banal, everyday.
I totally agree that the small moments that make up our everyday lives should be cherished. However I think read that picture as quite getting. Looks like they’ve gone for dramatic, which is exactly not what mundane is.
If she was sitting at her kitchen table in her pyjamas then maybe.
And of course vogue couldn’t flog overpriced shit promising to make you feel extraordinary if the ordinary/banal/mundane were to be cherished.

  8. Permit me to introduce you to my favorite fake twitter feed, “Jenny Holzer, Mom.” I haven’t checked it in a while, let’s see..

    https://twitter.com/JennyHolzerMom

ANARCHY BEGINS AT HOME BUT IT DOESN’T BEGIN AT THIS HOME

YOU NEED TO SWALLOW YOUR IDEALS BEFORE YOU SPEAK — NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND YOU WITH A MOUTH FULL OF IDEALS

WEAR A MASK OF COMPLACENCY LONG ENOUGH AND EVENTUALLY YOUR FACE WILL FREEZE LIKE THAT

ART DEMANDS AN AUDIENCE SO WHY IS THE TV ON IN THIS ROOM IF NO ONE IS WATCHING IT?

NAME BRAND CLOTHING IS A GOOD WAY TO ADVERTISE YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR BEING SWINDLED

GENDER IS AN INVENTED CONSTRUCT FOR DIVISION BUT YOU STILL CAN’T HAVE A BOY-GIRL SLEEPOVER PARTY

  9. WhoaWhoa, I guess that’s one interpretation – no progression. Or a commitment to uninspiring art.

But I took it to mean something that resonated with me more – ie you don’t have to be a slave to your ego and to the businesses telling you you have to have this and that in order to belong.

This human society and world economy can only expand – more, more, more! – for so long. There has to be a contraction. And appreciating the small things cures the unsustainable, “more” disease which rapes the earth and third world countries.

Once you can get your pleasure from simple things you are no-ones gimp.

  10. My dream zap zone cover is rei kawakubo doing the new age

headline could be “the reification of making do’ or something

  11. that is fab to learn the etimology of ‘mundane’ – the opposite of what i thought it was. love jenny holzer, saw a retrospective of her work some time ago and always rued breaking my ‘don’t be a jerk’ souvenier coffee mug. Damn.

  12. I see this as very pluto in capricorn statement about restoring order and bringing things back into alignment. it could also be saturn getting ready to change signs and stirring up the muck from the bottom of the pool saying ‘don’t take your relationship/job/community for granted’. look what is in front of you, instead of looking past it. people who hurt others only hurt themselves more. people who cling and the hanger’s on are ones to guard against. …

i love how fashion is about creating a vision and is about everything and everyone else. at the same time it’s about ourselves and living with ourselves and being aware of the stories we tell ourselves (to rationalise our life and mistakes).

    • I love that it is also the story we tell others by shrouding or encapsulating ourselves in a cloak which inevitably denotes tribe.

  13. Talking about the anima mundi, digging through old saved mp3s:

Blank & Jones feat. Anne Clark

    Caress the hardest heart
    Let the morning sun proclaim
    The light of the world
    Let the golden day unfurl
On every wave, on every hill
    Each angered fist uncurl

    Caress the hardest heart
    Stir the sleeping earth
    Each stone
    Each blade of grass.
    The soul of the world
    Ignite a brand new day
    Let the morning sun proclaim
    A brand new start.
    Caress the hardest heart

  14. I first saw MIla in a movie when she around 12 or 13 years old…divine,
it was called ‘Two Moon JUnction’, a very very hot love story set in the
    South of the USofA.
