The Gemini Burlesque Queen
This is Ms Lili St Cyr – Gemini Burlesque Queen of the olden days. (Moon in Pisces and what looks to me like her Venus in Aries Rising. Saturn + Neptune in Leo fyi)
She was entirely self-created and made up her own acts such as The Wolf Woman, Jungle Goddess (with a parrot), the Anatomic Bomb and Afternoon Of A Faun. The Catholic Church repeatedly condemned her – “The theater is made to stink with the foul odor of sexual frenzy” and she was charged several times with indecency. But still she kept on, marrying six times (including a speedway racer, an actor and a ballet dancer – she had Mars in Virgo square her Gemini Sun).
After retirement she acquired several cats and ran a lucrative lingerie business via mail order, called Scantie Panties.

What a piece-of-work she must have been! Beautiful, ballsy, brainy and a bit bananas.
… I’m completely drawn to the portrait of Brad Pitt above her chaise.
That portrait is screamingly camp.
Just like a true Gemmy – boobs out and on the phone
Ooo I also have Mars in Virgo square Gem Sun…
… and you say she married six time eh?
“Boobs out and on the phone”
haha, funny Gem…
Anatomic Bomb!!! I wish I had thought of that.
I don’t know why but I have never been quite drawn to shock/awe/horrify/amaze the Establishment. I mean, I want to / don’t have a problem with it. Maybe it’s the stiff-upper-lip Cap moon that makes me consider another way through the Authorita.
and I definitely Lurve avant-garde anything, so there is that. *muses*
This is great inspiration! I’m a Gemini (Leo rising) and just enrolled in ‘Burlesque School”. My second lesson is tonight!
I am gemini with Leo rising also but alas my burlesque school is on the inside
Great! You can reprise the Wolf Woman act! She could also have Leo Rising, i was just struck by how Aries her brows looked.
My money is on Aries rising (she looks very similar to an insanely gorgeous friend of mine with Aries rising, eyebrows, lips, facial shape, are almost exactly the same).
yeah, looks like those brows could curl into ram horns any second….
i love your aries eyebrow theory but it would be a little harder of that era as it was the fashion to do aries eyebrow? x
never knew her deets before. love her work
Gem sun, Aqua rising and that little piscy moon – love burlesque but never tried it, though I do have a reputation amongst friends for ‘dressing up’. It’s a glamour thing and witches can glamour.
When I was a wee lass and realised, sadly, that I was never going to be a green-eyed, six foot Verushka (v famous 70′s model, who had a Private Eye column named after her), I realised that I had to find something interesting about being five foot nothing and speccy four eyes.
That’s when the red lippy and eyeliner came in. Style is a passion, rather than fashion. To glamour someone is to cast a spell and making myself look good was a spell I cast on myself to give me confidence and belief.
And I used to love the fact that I would freak men out by looking one way and being another! There were some interesting incidents sitting on the tube in a pink tulle 50′s party dress while reading Gyn-Ecology: the meta-ethics of radical feminism.
Vaa-voom! Atomic Bomb! Sexy!
“sexual frenzy” the Catholic Church only helped out business with that review!!
I lived in the ‘olden age’ with a Scorpio mother fond of burlesque and underground clubs called The Stork Club where booze was sold in tea cups coz it was illegally after hours. Do remember Lilly St Cyr from Post magazine
or a movie.
At 16 was taken to see the first nudes in a dinner show-theatre in Melbourne.
They had to stand perfectly still as statues as it was The Law, could be heavily fined if they moved a muscle. Pole dancing it was not but very
‘artistic’, so many feathers upon feathers, and sequins by the millions.
