Perfume For Stationery Fetishists

Super-Virgoan Karl Lagerfeld and some other designers whose signs i don’t know have launched Paper Passions – a scent said to smell like “Proustian evocations of stationery, newly published novels and boxes of A4 foolscap.”

As someone with Mars proudly in Virgo, the sight of a stack of A4 foolscap does in fact turn me on but seriously?!  Okay, the dead-tree aspect bugs me but even though i’m digital with every other media, i am back in love with books again. It has to do with not wanting to read a screen in bed. Plus my naturopath said looking at – say – a kindle after 9pm at night makes your pineal gland think it is dawn and you’re flooded with sleep-fuqing hormones.

Has anyone smelt this? Would it be a suitable scent with which to impress Virgoans? That + your hospital corners and the right outfit could seal the deal, no?

  1. I love stationery – I used to have a fantasy about owning a stationery shop.
I worked with a Virgo who had a “let’s kill a bit of time” ritual by going through stationery stores – we used to do it in our lunch hour, it was great.
(my only issue with stationery is that if I think it is too beautiful I feel bad using it – odd I know)

  2. Too true. Reading from light emitting computer screens is a stimulant to the brain. You don’t get to feel pleasantly drowsy as you do with a book which obviously doesn’t emit artificial light.

I feel decidedly icky after spending too long at the computer especially when I know I’m tired and for whatever reason, maybe because the light is constantly stimulating my light receptors I’m oddly wide awake and then grumpy–can’t be good for you.

‘Foolscap’ –haven’t heard that for a while. Weird name for a paper size. I’ve been having a stationery fettish lately. Stationery shops are full of possibilities. Bookshops are full of done deals. I know which one gives me the bigger thrill.

  3. Foolscap and a4 are different paper sizes. I’m nitpicking and no Virgo anywhere.
Link there’s a free program called Flux that changes the light your. Imputed screen emits to more reflect natural light of the time of the day. Google it and give it a go.

    • NO it is fine to nit-pick, especially in a post like this but honestly, that is a quote from karl lagerfeld!!! Who is a Virgo. I thought foolscap was longer…

I know what you mean called flux but it’s not the look of the screen, it is the actual radiation/light units/something to do with your pineal gland.

Libran naturopath explains it WAY better but regardless, i have suddenly fallen bk into love with books again. As in physical books.

      • yes, physical books have a charm that kindle will never have.
digital is useful and utilitarian but almost as artistic or romantic as a toilet.

      • I watched a great 2 part documentary on SBS a while back about sleep deprivation. It explained how using artificial light at night is severely fuqing with our circadian rhythms and in turn, our general health and well-being… totally fascinating stuff. It was called “Dead Tired – Awake is the New Sleep” – well worth watching if it ever comes on again.

  4. i never dabble in synthetics but the idea of one persons memory of stationary smell could be made is interesting.
my memory of stationary is when I go and clean a shelf and find a bunch of paper I had tucked away with a few little trinkets that were touching a sandalwood vial from Mysore that has been used up..
i do wonder what his idea of stationary would smell like..

i would think … hints of hay and lavender maybe some woods..like palo santo..
I would put a drop agarwood for sure:)

I wonder if it is a little bit natural or all made in a lab..he seems like a guy who knows nice things and enjoys them..I wonder what Karl smells like..a little sweet like vanilla or ambergris..heh!

  5. gimme books over a screen any day. only prob is moving house.. and $$ then again there’s libraries and second hand bookshops and exchanging w friends

  6. Actual books for the win! Agreed. I hope it doesn’t seriously smell only of paper. Surely there most be a peony, rose water, or lilac undertone. Either way, I’m dying to try this. Fingers crossed that I don’t end up smelling like a cardboard box.

  7. foolscap (n.)
“cap worn by jesters,” 1630s; c.1700 as a type of paper, so called because this type of paper originally was watermarked with a court jester’s cap.

    Who knew?

But clever little viragos have been wearing Zagorsk. Smells exactly like freshly sharpened pencils.

  8. Take me to the scent! Take me to the scent! I just love notebooks, stationery, pens, pencils, all sorts – our home is filled with all sorts of gorgeously decorated notebooks and I love wandering through stationery stores. When I discovered Deniz Plaza here and all the wonderful stationery it offers, I was in La-La Land. I remember as a kid, decades ago, wandering into the adult library with my mother, inhaling the scent of the books in this magical mystery world and feeling like I was in heaven. Nothing in Virgo but 9 air signs, love writing, reading – perhaps I was a scribe in a past life, who knows? And I have just heard that, after being stuck in Istanbul for four months, our gear is arriving in Famagusta next week and I’ll be reunited with my BOOKS! My husband has just fixed up some shelving so I can store them safely. Oooh, i’m turning cartwheels here, my books AND a beautiful bookish scent. All is well in my world, folks!

And for those of you who remember my earlier posts, my little great-grandson who was supposed to die within 3 days of birth due to an inoperable heart condition is still going strong. You look at his eyes and see a REALLY old soul with a purpose, here’s a link to photos of Mackenzie Noble on my Flickr album:

We are off to the UK for a holiday in Sept-Oct and I really hope he is still in this world so we can say hello to thim.

  9. I’ve been hearing about this via my perfume groups and one person says:

Paper Passion is a wonderfully subtle treat. The box it comes in is HEAVY grey cardboard. Inside the grey box you find a book wrapped in luxurious red fibrous paper, not crunchy or stiff, but soft and pleasing to the touch. The red paper encases the Book which serves as the primary container for the fragrance. The book itself is 6.5″ x 4.5″ x 1.5″ with red edged pages.

The first pages of the book tell a story of the fragrance and books and paper. Buried within the pages of the book in a perfectly sculpted cutout is the simple shaped bottle of Paper Passion. With a black cap and white label the concept is not lost on presentation!

The scent of Paper Passion is an oddly subtle yet distinct scent. Reminiscent of scents like Molecule 02, Le Labo’s Another 13, Molecule 01 and even “not a perfume” by Juliette has a gun. The smell is not colorful, not bright, not full bodied, not loud in any way. It’s linear, flat, matte, quiet and airy. With eyes closed you can imagine the concept coming to life in your minds eye.

A wonderful concept and creation. Geza has done it again!

  10. Weird, did a post and it’s popped off to cyberland. Anyway, I did say that the scent sounds wonderful, just take me to it and waft it under my nose. I have loved stationery, books, pens, notebooks all my life, got a fetish about notebooks and our apartment is littered with notebooks with beautifully designed covers. I remember going into the adult library with my mother as a kid decades ago and loving the scent of all those books. And I have just heard that our luggage which has been stuck in Istanbul for four months is arriving next week and I’ll be able to unpack all my BOOKS. I shall hug and kiss each one.My husband’s just been installing shelve in our big cupboard so I can store all my booksl No Virgo, 9 air signs, so love anything to do with books and writing.

Hope it’s okay to write it here, but those of you who remember my post about my great-grandson living on beyond 3 days with an inoperable heart condition, he is still going strong 2 months down the track and we hope to see him when we holiday in the UK in Sept-Oct. Fingers crossed he still keeps powering on.

    • Sorry a belated response, but wonderful news about ur grandson ! I wish you all well and i hope for you that ur plans to meet up go well. Perhaps he is gaining strength to meet his soul-kin ?
As far as stationery smells go, and I am an avid sense-appreciator known to become ecstatic over the first Jasmine of spring, but I’m not into stationery aroma at all…Odd…
But I have been blissed out by the bush friesa’s, jasmine and other shrubs starting to flower now. They herald my new astrological year in such a beautiful way that I can only respond with hope and joy.

  11. Yes! Absolutely no question, my Mars in Virgo is all over that. Presented to me by a clean-shaven( or perhaps a precisely kept beard) and I’m dead on my feet. Love.
