Some super interesting scent choices in this Astro-Perfume article I’m not so sure on the astro-matches but its tres fragrance-erudite.

Girl clearly KNOWS her Guerlains, which my Moon in Libra respects.

HOWEVER: after a life-long love affair, i am totally torn re scents of late and here’s why…every time i look at an eco style book/post/article, i am informed that contempo fragrance is just basically shitloads of potentially hideous chemicals. Weirdest thing i read: that Eternity is neurotoxic.  Honestly, w.t.f, how weird does that sound?

That’s Eternity as in the Calvin Klein frag.  Angel copped it in the same article along with a host of others. So carcinogenic & neurotoxic but at least one smells sensational, right?!  Well not necessarily. I completely loathe to admit this but the best “results” i get from my pongs (and i have a suite of them) is when i am just wearing some sort of hippy body lotion.

Certain types of other women or gay guys will be like, wow is that Carnal Flower because they get it but males seem to like scents such as organic vanilla body lotion. Straight men hate synthetic or scents that smell like you’re ‘working’ but they love natural, foodie scents. Hence, i.m.o., the perpetual man-trappage potential of the spicy-vanilla reeking Coco even though it is not some artisan masterpiece.

And then, when you think about it, the perfume industry began in the days when people had a lot of shit to disguise – plague, not having washed for a year, a nice flowery smell to distract you from the lice crawling out of their wig…You know?

Or am i just being neurotic? Has Mars in Virgo/my Saturn transit taken over my brain? Thoughts please.

Oh and another thing: WHY is there no fragrance called Pluto?  It would be earthy, all organic obviously and top notes of sulphur, bergamot, frankincense, leather, ozone and crushed violets. Fuq knows where you would wear it to.

I love the gigantic red hare ears and sparkling green eyes almost alien concept…there should be MORE fashion illustration for perfume ads, no?

  1. My Saggo prefers naked, everything else is not noticed. Showered, unshowered, it makes no difference to him. My Libra flirt is completely different. Perfect grooming, perfect smelling, it all counts. I love the natural perfumes/scents, but they don’t last well. Seductively spraying your naked body with a gorgeous rose hydrosol from the toes up while your (Libran or other appreciative) partner watches/helps/licks it off is one way to enjoy the fleeting fragrance, but constantly reapplying scent is a bother. Outside of sex or seduction, I find it difficult to use scent. And, no, I won’t use the toxic stuff.

    • Anonymous. This is what happens when Saturn is opposing your Sun. You are diminished into a non status. That was my comment. ~The ArienScorp. (Quick, Natal Jupiter! Beam your expansive rays against Saturn’s cojoined-transit constrictiveness and restore balance and my personhood!)

  2. 1. schiaparelli illo, TICK. totally agree – illustrated ads would: give talented illustrators a cool job and a big fat international profile straight up; save our eyes from increasingly horrendous actors/models/singers/slashies featuring in extreme-photoshopped perfume ads; AND tap into the hand-made, hand-drawn zeitgeist / movement / art / original / coolness thing

    2. i do think that perfume did arise [france] as a way of overpowering the Pong in the days before hot running water and soap was available to all, (nor was valued that much?) in a northern european climate where bodies didn’t get much fresh air or summer rain

    3. wouldn’t surprise me at all re toxic ingredients. i still wear perfume but try to spray it on my clothing (except for the silk/delicate stuff)

    4. I always love to read about fragrances that attract men (like orchids attract wasps – via sexual deception, LOL). so far I hear that: Grapefruit, vanilla, cinnamon are popular with men. I wasn’t sure if it was because those homely, cake-y smells have obvious domestic associations, but hey they do smell pretty good. some guys are totally anti-fragrance. others seem to LOVE rich, ‘sophisticated’ scents, so, whatevs

    5. pluto fragrance, lol like Ether (as in the stuff that knocks you out). I reckon things like Clary Sage is plutonic or maybe neptunian.. . Or “Oud”, a middle eastern spice, it’s very rich, but distinctive.

    • Guerlain has a grapefruit one called Pamplelune (grapefruit moon), it’s my hi-summer fragrance.
A light, fresh man-magnet. Eau Dynamisant by Clarins is another beauty that’s O so fresh & appealing

  3. i agree re the illustrations and more of them vivienne westwood references pin-up girls in her perfume ads and they’re lovely – vargas style

  4. I read an article about neurologists who put people in a PET scanner to measure brain response while smelling scents. They said the scent the widest number of men responded to most was pumpkin pie. I don’t think this is very practical as a perfume.

    • i think i read that somewhere. twas an american study i guess? i’ve only ever encountered pumpkin pie once, when a friend was dating an american lady. she wanted to find tinned pumpkin to make the pie, we were like ‘wtf, tinned pumpkin? it’s in the shops fresh for 90c a kilo! but apparently it tastes better tinned,
      anyway *tangent*

  5. Mystic – this is the occult wing of the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and they have a “Planetary magick” list about 3/4 of the way down the page including Pluto :)

    http://twilightalchemylab.com/

Also, my moon in the 7th loves me some perfume but Aqua rising doesn’t like synthetics/animal testing, so things like hand blended perfume oils are fab!

    • I was just about to suggest that! If there’s a Pluto perfume it would have to be on there.

I had one of their perfumes that smelled of roses and earth, something about a graveyard. It sounds a bit emo/goth but I loved it, it was perfect for me!

      Now I stick to sandalwood.

        • I got Twilight Alchemy Lab mixed up with Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab – the one I had was from BPAL and it was called Zombi. Delicious!

          • They’re the same people – they just have different product lines under slightly different names. Zombi’s actually on my current wishlist! I’ve got Crossroads which is a similar earthy floral that I love :)

    • I bought several samples just 2 weeks ago, because of someone’s comment to an earlier MM post! (spent a fortune on it, including shipping)
Usually I don’t like to wear fragrances (and get dizzy of the toxic ones) but I really really really LOVE their snake oil

  6. Absolutely brilliant article- so so true-
I admit I do wear my No5 still quite often because it is so easy on the senses and not overbearing- but feel a pinge of guilt every-time it touches my skin and try to always just add to clothing and hair.

For true- healthy- witchy-cauldron- beautiful- mystical scents that blend dimensions you have to check out: http://www.matriarch.biz/natural_perfumes.html

here is Seattle she is getting traction at even the famous David Lawrence … quite unique scents with incredible potentials…

I am excited that this Uranus shift is bringing more of these types of topics to surface–one day our great grandchildren will look back at us like idiot for spraying raw chemicals on ourselves.

peace and love and light and magic to you all

  7. I’m usually a sucker for scent too, but lately I prefer male French parfum, and in its absence I opt for a floral hand cream, and essential oil based balm to rub on my temples. Those seem to do the trick for me.

    • All of the Dior range for men are very female wearable,
      specially Eau Sauvage.
Many women wore Estee Lauder’s Aramis for men in the 70′s.
Tabac if you were really out there. That was very smoky.

  8. That’s Suzie Parker a top model in the 60′s in the Chanel ad.
Chanel is far more watered down than it used to be when it was ‘the only
    thing to wear to bed’.

  9. Once I had sprinkles of No 5 on my scarf. A Scorp I met greeted me twice..He has Moon in Leo, Mars is Libra – so that may be the reason for the second “let me say hi again” hug.

        • it’s actually quite liberating / refreshing to not ponder motives isn’t it? however we slice it, we’re not them, and more importantly we have our own lives to figure out. Caring Less about others, (in the right ways) feels great.

    • i know a scorp with moon leo but mars aries – he is warm and friendly, extreme training, intense, totes amazing person who attracts a bit of drama or always an issue to solve and spin around in for a while.

  10. FTR, and unrelated, I wish Venus was on my ascendant more often. it’s a very yummy feeling and not really the same as my normal headspace. I could also attribute it to a repressed crush on the multi-scorp, but I don’t associate the vibe with just him. She retrogrades back into my 12th as of tomorrow ish, so at least i get a second pass late June when my headspace has cleared a little… and my yoga practice has kicked in again

  11. coco girl from way back and friends have always teased me about it. spray it on the hair (venus in leo), a little carnation essential oil behind the ear to bring out the muskiness and i’m off.

and yes, i usually get the oh you smell so good compliment from the boys.

  12. Hmm, i was a Chanel No5 stickler for years, always a chrissie pressie.
I would give my pillow a spray at night (South Node Leo?).

The Piscean, with Virgo Moon doesn’t dig on scents, i am partial to solid sandalwood perfume/parfum (usually picked up off Etsy),
That is, everytime, without fail, met with “You smell like a hippie” to which my reply is ”Thats because i am a bloody hippie you pork chop”.

  13. I went through some kind of craze about 2 yr ago, and bought a ridiculous amount of perfume. The only ones I ever wear are Stella, Badgley Mischka, and Dior Miss Cherie. But I’ll spritz it onto my bare skin before I dress, because I like it to be my secret that I’m wearing it. Then when I have to use smelly public restrooms all I have to do is stick my nose in my shirt, voila!

  14. Mystic’s previous comment about Pluto return around 21 has me thinking about Nahema by Guerlain. It was a 21st pressie and the parfum came in a beautiful case. Maybe I’ll go back to it although it’s not so easy to get. Othewise Black by Bulgari is a favourite. I find I’m allergic to scented b

  15. I have to admit that I have a bottle of Allure which reminds me of England and going out. I like wearing it in cold weather :) And going out. But my go-to scent is still Eau Dynamisant, although I was living in Le Labo’s Iris 39 for a while there….

  16. When I was growing up, my mother would never let me wear any kind of synthetic fragrances. She would smell it instantly and was very sensitive to it. Only later did I realize her crazy reasoning behind it, when I found out about all the chemicals that are used in perfumes. A company can write “fragrance” on the bottle and not have to claim what chemicals were used in concocting it. I happily no longer wear fragrance, though I used to love it. Now I prefer essential oils or the freshly showered scent. I can’t stand when people wear too much fragrance. One spray is plenty!! I like being able to breathe, thank you!!

  17. Nothing like a good quality essential oil. Yes Mars in Virgo is doing wonders for out etiquette and fumigating the lice and ear wigs out of our brains.

  18. I seem to be one of those people that can wear any perfume and people think it smells great. Somebody once told me I’d probably make fly spray smell good. Anyhoo I reaqainted myself lately with all the vileness of animal testing and products in the cosmetics industry and have sworn off most brands of make up and perfume, so that limits my choice, but that is no drama.
One more thing, then I’ll go. Dior. Poison. Original. For Aquarians??? Did I read that right. That stultifying throwback? That stuff is like a depressive episode in a bottle. I know Aquarians can be a bit overwhelming with their know it allness, but are we so bad as to deserve to smell like that?

    • I could see Poison being Aquarian in a way. Alien seems like it was made for Aquarians, and Poison is similar (I am a huge fan of both). Aqua-rising here.

  19. Am I the only woman in the world who loathes Chanel No 5?

I adore Guerlain and Balenciaga scents. I am excited about all the Guerlains mentioned above that I hadn’t heard of, but still loving Balenciaga ‘Paris’ – violets and I don’t know what – intoxicating.

I would wear Mystic’s ‘Pluto’ everywhere.

  20. yah but what kind of scents do WOMEN like? I didn’t think scent was that big of a deal, now reading how much attention is paid to it im getting all nervous about not knowing something apparently important for so long, what kind of stuff do you gals like to smell on a guy? A whole topic apparently important i know NOTHING about, its killing me
    musst…..know……..everything…..

    • Interesting ones. None of that generic Polo crap or god help us, Axe. (Mind you, Axe makes my eyes swell up so I might be biased.) Nothing too strong. The same rule applies to men (maybe double!) as does to women — your scent should NOT come into a room before you do, or stick around when you leave.

I knew one man who could wear straight-up patchouli like no other; it mixed with his body chemistry and made essence of sex, and did NOT smell like old hippie. Another guy (my old boss, embarrassingly enough) sometimes wore Chanel Egoiste and it was in. credible on him. (I thought Egoiste was something I might like, based on that, but unfortunately on me it smelled like pumpkin pie.)

    • Greetings David,
I used to wrap fav jumpers/sweaters in my fav incense sticks and stoer them iin the drawers, taht worked beautifully.
      http://www.etsy.com/shop/BorgataWestPerfumery?ref=seller_info
Heres a link to a shop on Etsy with some interesting looking smells, with solids, they are a lot less in your face, but sexy up close, i reckon men suit smells like sandalwood, cedar, woods in winter..cant think of summer, i think summer its good to smell of the beach…the solid perfume can work a bit on your clothes too, if your a bit unny about diving straight onto your neck…anything that makes you feel good and warm and luscious !
I used to go mental for Farneheit by Dior on a man…Phwoar ! (winter smell).

    • Hey d5379, I think that much like the fellas out there, it’s a subjective thing. I remember reading once (and I can’t remember whether the advice was for men or women, but it was sound either way) that cologne / fragrance should be just strong enough for you to detect when standing <1m (? or something) away from someone, and make you want to get a bit closer to sniff it a bit more, if it's yummy.

A friend of mine and also one of my bosses both used to wear the most sexy cologne, I WISH i knew what it was. it was very subtle, so I just wanted to bury my face in their shirts whenever I was near them so I could hoover up that scent, omg. Ridiculous, considering I wasn't otherwise *that* attracted to my friend, and although I had a highly inappropriate crush on my then-boss, well you don't go cuddling up to your boss for obvious reasons. If it helps, I think the high-end labels like YSL, Chanel, Dior, possibly D&G….? Make some very yummy business-y sophisticated scents for men.

Depending on your background, european men seem to be able to get away with richer colognes. I remember a (male, older) friend once leaving a jumper at my house which smelt HEAVENLY. I practically wrapped that jumper around my head for weeks, until it was given back to him….lol. Years later I discovered – smell memory lasts a long time! – that it was YSL's Rive Gauche for men. Example of a slightly spicier, sweeter cologne.

Oh, and my Toro Ex used to wear one or two Hugo Boss colognes….yum. Again not quite as crispy as the chanel things but . personal preference..

Anyway, in short, wear something that you like first of all, test out its strength on female friends – if you're wearing too much / not enough etc. Anyway, have fun :)

    • also don’t underestimate the basics – a fiery aries friend of mine was rendered weak-kneed when she smelt her then-boyfriend’s Imperial Leather shaving soap. mind you I think that was more associated with their, shall we say, sexual chemistry than any fundamental traits of the soap itself, although it was nice – fresh, clean, an indicator that one bathes regularly, you know the simple but important stuff ;)

    • thanks everyone, now its kind of exciting, I am definitely going to find something good for sure now, the website you put up cosmic ram seams pretty good and I think I will try it, and I definitely took some mental notes on what everyone else said and colognes that were mentioned, thank you SO much for the input

  21. O, i sooooo want that Pluto frag !! i started to wear a bit of perfume again, here and there…but i admit that thinking it through is a little disturbing! Anyway, isnt taking so much care of yourself the promise of a delightful natural smelling skin ?! I met a guy lately, on the first *morning* his nose on my shoulder, said ”even this morning your skin smells incredibly amazing”. and I had not perfumed. OMG i will take that comment to grave ( sun and moon in libra :D )

  22. Hi Mystic, i l.o.v.e. parfumes and i’m a fan of the Fragranica portal, it’s the biggest fragrance database on the web where you can find almost every parfume released thoroughly documented and enthusiastically multi-multiply reviewed by the consumers.

    http://www.fragrantica.com/

From the most iconic vintages such as the YSL Opium new rework / to the freshest releases, ppl are crying their eys & souls out on how bad this stuff has gone globaly .. alergies, headaches, rushes, nausea, “same or different bottle – but smell’s nothing like the original – still same price and such, synthetics synthetics synthetics, the worst write-offs of petrochemistry you pay in the weight of gold, which makes you feel sick – not good ! :(

The shift basically begun with trying to replace chemically substaces which got on the black list by endangered animal origin, and they carried it all the way through .. Still, there are some houses which keep consistently pressing natural/high quality compounds in their formulas, and i’ve noticed folks hunting for those more and more, at the expense of their old, cherished faves .. Of my faves :

    L`Artisan Parfumeur
    L`Occitane en Provence
    Amouage

The problem here is that, all-natural ingredients such as essential oils and absolutes generally fall short in the “logevity” section against that of synthetic ones and we all know it is within-the-holly-trinity+projection&sillage-of-the-perfume-issues :/

    ~

    • wow that is fab info thanks – but are you sure about L’Occitane? I thought Lauder bought them & the last thing that i smelled from there was like 1980s fly spray lol

  23. Oh, wow, why doesn’t someone make your Eau de Pluto? If it really smelled as described (and so many perfumes DON’T, on me, or even in the bottle) I would wear it to death.

As for the article, well… if I’m supposed to represent the typical Piscean, then it’s a complete miss. Tropical fruits and flowers? BAAAARRRFFFF. I like abstract scents, and hate anything girly or traditionally perfumy (which isn’t helped by the fact that my body chemistry takes the least hint of sweetness and turns it into something like Eau de Granny’s Soap Cupboard). And I’m allergic to a lot, but not all, perfumes. (The entire Calvin Klein range gives me borderline asthma reactions.)

And yeah, I’m another one who really doesn’t get the thrill of Chanel No. 5, or any of the Chanels. They’re just boring to me.

I love perfume descriptions that are all for instance “Chinese ink, ozone”. Abstract shit. I like both those smells, but I’ve never smelled a perfume that actually was anything like that.

I wish that article had been more helpful. I’m looking for a new perfume (I’ve been wearing Jo Malone Wild Fig and Cassis, which smells like the inside of a tropical greenhouse, and finishes to something warm and slightly spicy/mulchy, but I’ve been wearing it so long I’m a bit bored of it). I should get round to ordering some of the legendary Serge Lutens ones. He’s also a Pisces; maybe that will help?

  24. I can’t wear many of the dept. store perfumes sadly. I like many of them but they seem to make me sneeze or swell up. I guess because they are neurotoxic. :( oh well.

I do like many scents but I find most males smell things differently esp the Aqua ones. I remember a long time ago after working on the innards of a lawnmower and smelling gross from oil and gasoline, the smell of those things put the Aqua-bf into heat or something. He wouldn’t let me shower that stuff off. argh… Yet another Aqua-d00d I liked insisted I wear deoderant and shower Gattaca-style. He had way too much Virgo in his chart.

As a Libra, I like scents but i only wear them in tiny doses so a person can’t even smell it unless they are standing 2 ft or less away…or they are like me and have a super-sniffer.

The perfume article seems a little stereotyped but generally true.

Guys are supposed to like cinnamon scents.

  25. If you want to explore a fascinating world of evocative scents, there are companies like Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab creating scents based on characters from favourite books and more esoteric things. They are amazing just to read about!

  26. According to the astro perfume article, an Aries would find me whiff-erific anytime, and a Cap would after I had an afternoon of yardwork.

I Cannot Stand fruity scents on myself. Flowers yes, fruits never. I don’t mind so much smelling them on others, but they’re all wrong on me.

  27. Never use chemical perfumes, haven’t my entire adult life.

I use natural oils infusion and essential oils if I want to smell pretty….vanilla, lilac, and ylang-ylang. I go without usually though.

I bath with almond soap and use plumeria conditioner.

saturn conjunct sun in kataka, virgo venus conjunct ascendant, leo moon in 12th.
    No strong libra at all.

Thankfully my toro loves garlic and onions as much as me!!!

    • I would so wear the Pluto fragrence, when dressed all in black, with my eyeliner on, walking the beach in solitude.

  28. all time faves allure and guerlain l’instant magic, hermes 24 fauborg.
for sombre times bvlgari jasmine noir and for fresh summer all things green and versace

must admit would love to explore natural perfume making – i know so little about perfumes and would be a good thing to get into

my gran used to perfume herself with powder puffs and used to smell divine

a random wondering, do the japanese make perfumes?

  29. i know this is nothing to do with Pluto, but once I was doing a stick welding class (long story) and the petrol-head I was in a band with at the time had a funny, “I might be in love with you” look in his eye for a few minutes when I rocked up for band practice later that afternoon. :D :D

  30. ARGH!!! l love Eternity by CK but yes you are right it’ s just a bunch of chemicals so l kind of cut down on perfume use a while ago plus l just put itsy bitsy on on my clothes not to get intoxicated!
But seriously Eternity?? and it’s super expensive as well amazing!!

l have Obsession & Poison at the mo. he l just realized what i’ve wrote …lol!
there ya have pluto perfume…l love spicey scents.

  31. Not much for commercial parfums especially with chemical sensitivities now but I do recall loving Romeo Gigli until I dropped it and smashed on the bathroom floor. The bottle looked like a big hershey’s kiss. Such a romantic fragrance….
I received a bottle of Dolce Gabanna Light Blue and I must say I would have bought it myself. Other than that, you’ll like this one Mystic, is Perlier Ylang Ylang so beautiful and true scent of the flower. Other than that I love helichrysum, champa, tublar rose essential oils.

  32. No perfumes, grew too sensitive. I do wear Pluto essential oil.

Ingredients: The essential oils blended of Clementine, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Juniperberry, Rosewood.

Love it, smells somewhat dank, dark and mossy.

  33. I recently went through a phase where I hated strong and obvious scents – if I could name the main notes of a perfume I was BORED by it. Walking past Body Shop/Lush etc gave me a headache. So on a whim I bought L’Air de Rien (actually more potent than the name suggests) – according to internet reviews everyone thinks it smells like wet dog! To me it just smells like sweet musky clothes – like you’ve been wearing the same flannel pyjamas for a long time and a bit of your fancy moisturiser got on them too.

  34. It’s true that synthetic fragrances are just noxious and toxic but you could take what the article says and get natural scents – essential oils, hydrosols and so on.
    Go see: http://www.floracopeia.com
If you hate patchouli and ylang ylang, for example, it’s probably synthetic versions. The real thing is heavenly.

  35. I’m libra and hate hate haaaaaaaate green smelling fragrances! GAG
Also I’m aries moon and Thierry Mugler’s Angel (listed as suited for ariens) makes me gag. It literally causes me to heave and I can’t be near it.

The cancer, scorpio and capricorn notes described on her site are the most appealing to me… Could be my venus/saturn conjunct in scorp

    • PS: a fragrance I have always loved is the original formulation of Vivienne Westwood’s Boudoir.
Even though it has slight top notes of aldehydes, I find it kind of addictive.

The rest of the top notes are jasmine, rose, narcissus, carnation, orris root, cardamom and coriander. The base is patchouli, warm and milky sandal wood, tobacco leaves, cinnamon and powdery vanilla.

It’s described by some as being old lady-ish and also “like a wet crotch.” Ha! On me however, it attracts the kind of men I like AND everyone else. However, these negative reviews are likely referring to the new formulation which is rank.

  36. When I originally left a comment I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on whenever a comment is added I receive four emails with the same comment.
Is there an easy method you can remove me from that service?
    Thanks a lot!
