Epona’s Feast Day!

epona_dacia

Today is the feast day of Epona, the Celtic & Roman Horse Goddess from where we get the name “pony.”

Her name literally means “Great Mare” and her image – a la above – used to be on Roman stables all over the place. So apt that she connected with the time of Sagittarius – her lucky emblem?  The Horseshoe…Horses were obviously mega-important in the olden days -not just beloved but key to commerce, war and transporting oneself.  The horseshoe was to attract the favourable attention of Epona, a very jovial Lady, with a similar vibe to that of Jupiter. She is almost like another ‘ruler’ of Sagittarius, especially the horse-mad ones.

Epona is asteroid 3838  – you can look her up in the Astrodienst extended chart options…I would LOVE to know if horsie peeps have her prominent.

And could she be the secret astro-ingredient to success in gambling on horses? Yet another task for my imaginary Astro-Intern…

Do something beautiful for a horse today, in honour of Epona. I am going to give some $ to Horse Rescue Australia. There are similar charities all over the place.

Epona.. i remember reading about her in my MASSIVE mythology book.
She too was a goddess of nature – like pan and flora –
as for this saggo – ive got natal Epona Opposing both my natal Neptune and Uranus… And currently the horse mistress is trineing my sun and mercury as well as squaring my venus.

As for the Horse lovers – two of my friends are like obssessed – just check out lady epona in their charts – Both have her Trining Jupiter and Pluto….
    a lead…?

I have checked this, but I think I have Epona in Pisces and I think it is trine with the moon. Does that make sense? Can anybody help me?

I have a horse, a beautiful grey purebred Arab gelding. He is a lovely comfortable ride and he is a hoot to play with in the sand arena. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea because he can be a bit naughty but I love him, and so does my dog. They get on very well together and we all love going for rides together.

I always find that he reflects back to me whatever I am feeling. So that he often tells me more clearly than human can, and in a completely non-judgemental way, when I am being unreasonable, impatient or am just plain and simply up-tight. It is like when I sit on him, everything about me is automatically transmitted to him.

Do you have a birth chart for your horse? That would be nifty to see as well. I think besides Sagg, I see a lot of Pisces people with horses because they love animals and horses can be very healing.

Wow, this is so interesting Mystic!

Horses were a big feature of my childhood & my parents were horse crazy owning & breeding their racehorses with ex melbourne cup winners. I would love to know where Epona sits in their charts.

My dad bought me my first horse Ms M when I was 3 yrs & I would get up early in the morning & go outside climbed up on the trampoline & call her over. She would let me climb up on her back & walked around the yard (even when my arm was in a cast)
She was so gentle & I loved her to bits. Dad would freak out about this of course. Probably because I fell off the prized winning racehorse when I was 3yrs old breaking my arm, i still have the scar on my palm when I look at it, it reminds me of her!

I took Ms M in the equestrian events & dad being a cowboy entered us in the rodeo & I would ride her to school sometimes.

I have Epona conjunct Mercury in Cancer 4th house

I love Epona and horses! I have Sagg Asc with Epona at 0 degrees Leo in the 8th house. I wish i did not live in the city so i can ride horses more often. Out where i work though, there are people who have therapeutic horses who let kids with disabilities ride them. And of course we have horse-y massage and acupuncture.

grew up riding horses, loved them, big strong furry aminals, loved hanging out with them, gaining their trust etc,
      horsey cuddles,
big velvety nostrils blowing out warm breath to keep my hands warm on chilly mornings.
      getting stood on (OWWW),
      falling off (ooof),
      leather,
      strong legs,
intransigent equine behaviour (food / herd / bored and want to go home),
galloping at top speed across paddocks,
dusty fire trails in national parks, discovering places i wouldnt go on foot.
using my horse to help me sabotage a shitty fake-ass wanna be plush country club golf course that was being built across some of my fave trails.

Epona (r) conjunct my Venus in Leo (in 11th). And like THE most conjunct thing I have.

A bit funny that I was thinking about Sag friends today (but it is their birthday time of year). More interesting, given the above, that my two Leo exes (one who is a year of the horse guy and it was really more a fling than a thing) were both in touch with me today.

Loving all these horse stories everyone, thank you! A friend who studies & teaches natural horsemanship taught me a little bit of the horse communication stuff once and it blew my mind. So gentle and so lovely. And so effective. I was impressed that the premise is for the human to learn how horses communicate with each other instead of imposing (fear & control based) human rules & communication on them. I have since found that some of the horse communication concepts work pretty well on humans too ;)

Thank you Mystic, I will do something nice for a horse today too.

I am totally blown away by all the astro info and loving it!!!

I wish I had more dates of my family here as my Ma’s side are Irish and suspected horse trainers (as the 4 million photos of we found in some cases) but everyone has passed on so it’s hard to ask about. I have a super strong connection with horses though never had the cash nor housing to ride or be near stables. Pic wise, there are all these photos of racing in Ireland with Great grandpa and lil son with ribbons etc and as many horse shots as there are people!

Other grandfather was a rockabilly who bet on the horses nearly for a living, babysitting consisted of being plonked under a table at the TAB or randwick when we came to visit. He paid for the wedding with my nan on a bet with a horse. won a shilling.

Epona is in my first house in Cancer square MC Aries sextile chiron and Jupiter.

LOL I LOVE funny gambling success stories – those ones where they bought the house with the penny bet. There’s obviously the other compulsive negatory side to gambling but I was taught never to gamble unless you can afford to give the money away – a canny lesson. Did you collect the pretty coloured tickets at the track?

I’ve never bet on horses but two years ago, did win $48,000 on slot machine. Yes, casino is five mins down the freeway but only play small amounts now and just so I can have a smoke when I want one.

YES! What an awesome win Sweetest of Peas – a win like that would no doubt give a gal a feeling of invincibility and encourage a return to the scene of the win. Kudos to you for your restraint – 5 minutes away would be like it was calling to you sometimes. Horses when done at the track is exhilerating. But there’s not that physical connection with the machine on an individual personal level – more of a communal rise and fall of energy with each race as it’s run and the anticipation of the next. The gambling phenomenon is supposedly hard wired in the part of our brain that was ancient hunter gatherer zone – the hunter part. I guess races is therefore more like a tribal hunt whereas machine is individual hunter in the wild. S’interesting.

I bought a horse two months ago, used to have horses when I was young but have only just started again. I have a beautiful, old thoroughbred named Kouta. He will get apples as well carrots today in honour of Epona. I wear an Epona medallion constantly and pray to her before I ride, and thank her afterwards. I pray to her for communication with my horse.

Can anyone help me? I have no idea how to read my chart! I looked up the Epona asteroid on my chart and it says Epona 10Gem 7’26″. Can anyone help interprate what this might mean? I would be very grateful!

I LOVE your horse/goddess story. Your epona is in gemini if you have a look at the house it’s in and find out what that house rules you’ll be able to work out what it may mean to you or how it could manifest.

Then look at the table at the bottom and see if it has any squares or triangles or other little symbols along the epona row and that will mean it aspects something else. If you look at the aspect it makes with the other thing it will tell you more about how it may manifest in your life.

Adapting what mystic said she would probably manifest to do with luck (jove or jupiter) or as a vehicle transporting you from one place or another – so if your 2nd house which rules luck is in gemini she would possibly bring you luck with gambling. If your 7th house is in gemini it may manifest as loving relationship with horses? If she was in aquarius i’d guess that she would bring a love of car gadgets? Cars being the modern steed. Have a play iwht your chart & see what you come up with – is fun.

I have Epona tight conjuct Jupiter in Cancer and Fifth. Never even been on a horse. Should I learn to ride horses for pleasure and luck?

Funnily enough I was reading “West with the Night” by Beryl Markham just this morning, recommended by Mystic on my Bday last month, she has a lot of the same astro as me. She was extolling her youthful adoration of horses and I thought “maybe I should learn to ride horses, women like me seem to like it”. Epona’s feast day indeed!

CRAZY Big family connection with racehorses training/owning etc throughout my childhood. I love them. I have good luck when gambling. I only gamble when I feel lucky – it’s not a regular occurrence or a habit it’s more of a feeling in my bones and I seldom lose when I do it. I was taught things to watch in thoroughbreds as a child being taken round the stables. My first ever bet age 6ish was $1 on a horse that had odds of 100 to 1 and it won.

Epona is in my 2nd house in Cancer trine my Scorp moon.

Personally, Epona must work in more of a mystical way for me as recently had a dream of a horse with two eagle feathers hanging off of it. The horse was frozen however and as I walked by, touched the feathers. Obviously the horse totem is something I need to activate.

I love horses. As a child I was completely obsessed, read all the pony club books, cried apologies into my father’s pony-hide chair etc.

Then I ended up part owning and caring for 30 ponies and taking horse tours on said half-wild ponies while living in a south american country in the tropics.

It was so stressful! My favourite died of snake bite for a start. Then the diseases and the ticks and the biting and the kicking and the feeding and the drought… OMG!

I still love horses, but I am much more realistic about my abilities and interests in that area – like next time I am millionaire with loads of staff I might consider taking up lessons.

I also have epona in cancer in house 2 (values and stuff) ‘cept it’s trining Chiron house 10 (healing deep wounds and where I want to go)…

As an underage teenager I used to go around and play pool at QLD country pubs while a gemini friend used to collect horse winnings for his SP bookie Scorpio Dad…

Other than that I’ve had very little interest in gambling. I actually feel a little sick in casinos as there is so much desperation in the air…it over rides emotionally for me the people that are there for a casual flutter.

I like the horses that I know but don’t feel particularly drawn to them.

Thankyou again! Glad you love my horse/Goddess story. Yesterday, on Epona’s feast day, I was bending over and Kouta nuzzled the back of my neck. Very protective.
