Today is the ancient feast day of Sophia aka Sapientia, the Goddess of wisdom & (say the gnostic christians) the wife of God. Later demoted to be the Holy Ghost. This is an amazingly abbreviated version, of course. Perhaps she could be the ruler of Virgo, instead of Mercury? It fits in with this.

WOW you have just made me aware of the fact I always just assumed the holy ghost was male. I’m not a christian so it’s not an area of interest – what a revelation.
-
Got into a raging argument with a snooty Priest once who insisted The Holy Spirit was male…….misinformed dolt.
-
I wonder how I thought that tho? It must’ve seeped in somehow. Do they specifically refer to the ghost as male? I got a bit excited when I saw this new ghost fact let me tell you!
-
MEH! as if he would know. Just because you choose to be a formal servant of the church does not mean you understand divinity.
-
No disrespect but it is not automatic rite. great post x
-
-
-
-
yeah i love how she gets demoted into a gender neutral thing. Holy Ghost..blah.
-
Hmmm well Christians and I am one of them, believe that the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost is actually the Spirit of Jesus Christ left on earth as a helper to Christians. Jesus promised he will leave a helper to help us in life, when he went to heaven after being cricuified you see.
So this is where the idea of God ” within us ” came into being, as the Holy Spirit literally lives in you when you accept Christ as your point of reference in life. So your helper is there “if” you want. The thing is often we forget this! Am not into the ritual of religion but am a believer.

You’re right about this. The big HG is very feminine, and the Sophia/HG meld is always a theme about wisdom. Wasn’t Ecclesiastes is devoted to “Sophia”? Much has been made about the adoption of Sophia/Wisdom devotion into Judaic culture after their exposure to Babylonian culture, and thus a synchretic expression, not original to the faith. But the instinct to ascribe a particular name to God’s Wisdom was always present, no doubt. As was feminine imagery. “El Shaddai” is an ancient name in the Bible for God, meaning “the many breasted one”.
Thank you, MM! Spent most of the week writing about Sophia, and now this. Bueno.
-
I didn’t know that’s what El Shaddai meant! Nor that ecclesiastes was devoted to Sophia. Is that in the text itself? Thanks for all the new info!
-
Ah, crud. No, looking this up now, the specific passage I remembered is actually from Proverbs. Wisdom is personified as a woman calling out to those who are willing to hear her, but few do. (Of course.)
El Shaddai still stands.
Here’s a good article on Sophia’s place in church history: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1058/is_n29_v111/ai_15861175/
-
Thanks for looking it up babe. Proverbs makes more sense. That El Shaddai meaning is crazy though.

Hiya weathergirl “El Shaddai” is also a Judaic name for God, translated as ” Almighty God ”
Please see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Shaddai
Due to persecution/torture etc many Christians used pagan festivals as a cover to celebrate Christian celebrations. Symbols like the fish was marked on walls etc.
Sad that nut cases then persecuted pagans in latter years. I wish humans could just respect the differences in people without reverting to savagery. There are some countries in the world right now that are literally savaging Christian families. I never thought it possible in 2009 but a sweet Buddhist girl in my mother country was killed because she became a Christian. The law vs faith is a mine field.-
Was she killed by buddhists? Are you by any chance from the “happy” country Bhutan?
Another crazy fact that blew all my lovely naieve buddhist fantasies out of the water – they’re not as peace love and mung beans as we’re led to believe. They persecute people whoa ren’t buddhist just as much as any other organised religion. They too have a strong patriarchal faction which has gradually forced women (the nuns) from their centuries old roles in the religion. I don’t agree with the occupation of Tibet but life there wasn’t so peaceful before it was occupied either.
-
Yes afraid so. No Sri Lanka. Whever there are people, there are those who are true blue and absolute nut cases in all societies, all faiths etc.
In Sri Lanka (SL) many faiths quite happily lives side by side, respecting each other’s choice. The government however thought it was a great idea to put the Buddhists against the Hindu’s and used it as a tool to take the world’s and the local’s eyes off politics. Christian Tamils and Sinhalese who protected and hid Hindu’s/Buddhists were burnt alive imprisoned in their homes.Afraid whatever you are so right. I look at my sweet Anglosaxon pals who think Easter religions are all sweet and fab and am sad to say they are not. There is much good….but there is also much saddness. I used to have major battles with men who abused their wives and said that it was because they deserved it, as they had done something in their previous lives!!! I have been in temples where one section was where you could do charms so women lost babies, people broke out in sores, lost jobs, family died etc etc. The temple would be paid to bring down these curses or blessings! This is not widely advertised in the West!
Even where rape is concerned. Young girls were given to the Hindu temple as temple prostitutes to bring honour favour to the family. My question was, did the girl agree to do this? was she asked? I was considered a trouble maker and was warned that I could ” disappear”! I call this legalised rape!
‘whatever’ – Buddhist nuns are treated like slaves – there to serve the male priests. I must say however, I have met wonderful priests/nuns in Catholic churches and Buddhist temples. They are just humans, with human foibles – some more than others. Some total vomits and others just bliss- a celebration of what humanity should be.
This is why I LOVE Australia. I can be ME and blossom and say what i think and believe what i want to believe without being popped off! Or my family suffer because of my beliefs! Or wish not to marry or decide not to follow tradition. Over there even if you fell in love you could not marry – if your astrology did not fit!
-
O yeah nut cases everywhere without a shadow of a doubt
) Altho it’s sad to hear of the girl you’re talking about I’m so happy to hear you’re in a place where you can think and live freely and will never be in that position – most people who have never known anything other than freedom take it for granted and don’t realise what blessings they have had bestowed upon them at birth simply because of their geographical location. Re the buddhist stuff I was so shocked when I first heard the things I heard – and you’ve just added some more information. I naievely thought they may be the ones who were free from that kind of behaviour because they have such good pr. I watched the story of the Buddhist nun who has travelled the world trying to make the plight of the nuns known – the dalai lama just ignores her because it’s his sect that is the one that has systematically had them removed from their posts. From loose memory they were originally the oracles of the religion – born into it just as the dalai lama was – it was them who used to prophesise the location of the child who would be the next dalai lama. So now that role has been made redundant I wonder who the next dalai lama will be because they’ve now cast aside the traditional rituals. I wish I could remember her name the woman is truly amazing.
Peace & seasonal greetings to you SS.

A Sophia Poem
Our Mother, thou who art in the darkness of the underworld,
May the memory of the holiness of thy name shine forth,
May the breath of the awakening of thy kingdom warm the hearts of all homeless wanderers,
May the resurrection of thy will enliven eternal faithfulness, even unto the depths of corporeal substance.
Receive this day the living remembrance of thee from human hearts,
Who implore thee to forgive the debt of forgetting thee,
And are ready to fight against the temptation in the world which has led thee to existence in the darkness,
That through the Deed of the Son, the immeasurable pain of the father to be stilled,
Through the freeing of all beings from the tragedy of thy withdrawal
For thine is the homeland, and the all bestowing greatness, and the all-merciful grace, for all and everything in the circle of all. AmenAnonymous (attributed to Valentine Tomberg)

In some translations they prefer to you “the all-providing one,” which I suppose to then get watered down to “Almighty”.
I am always disturbed by the death of someone simply because they chose a particular faith. Where I spent most of Pluto in Sag a group is based there that functions like an Amnesty International for Christians persecuted in hostile countries. And yes, burnings, torture and murders happen to those who reject the dominant religion. Losing one’s job is the common fate of most, though. Seems benign compared to losing one’s life, but a job loss means not one but probably five mouths will have to find new means of support.
It’s repulsive and sad, no matter who this happens to, or what faith they subscribe to.
-
weathergirl I am interested too that you worked with Amnesty. Have you noticed how all the countries that persecute women, seem to particularly suffer from severe calamities? A friend who researches this stuff has a theory that whenever a country brutalises women, they particularly suffer hardship – aswomen, the mother – is not respected and honoured and valued. That a country never truly improves, until their attitude to women change for the positive.

OH that brought tears to my eyes william thank you.

I wept the first time I heard this also. I sobbed and sobbed for half an hour I think. Thanx for reminding me of that-

there is no reason what so ever why the pope or any of those other bishops and so on should HAVE TO BE MALE.
Also is there a goddess who specialises in stopping women eating crap (high end crap from the patisserie but still crap) in the dark moon even though they have to go to the beach and swim with MODELS in the new y ear?-
If there isn’t such a goddess, you should invent one.

Sophia, “anima-mundi” or soul of the world-
while God is transcendent She is immanent.. while God is light,
Sophia is form- the space/time continuum…
Earth is Her heart and this is Her imagining…
While God saved man before, now man must save God– for He has
“lost his Soul”… Sophia is the soul of God (alchemy)She is the feminine figure depicted in all relgions who comes “at the end
of time” a.k.a. the future ,… She is future time–(She is coming into the Earth now at this time it is said…..
ufo’s, cropcircles, her signature…) She is “the new sheriff in town”
The first money was a token given to worshippers who could not come
to a bull sacrifice to Her (ancient Greece) The first coin– originated with
Sophia sacrifices… (therefore money is Her !)
— just some things I know about Sophia… (sic)
you can feel Her love especially in deep silence….
Her parents were depth and silence in the beginning…
There are no statues to Her– because She touches each one differently and from where they are in their development… everyone sees something different….
Sri Auribindo wrote much about Her, there are great writings about Her
The rays around Her figure as “Virgin of Guadalupe” are not emanating
rays but a depiction of the field of silence in which She always appears–
She is silence …. find deep silence and you will find Her, always..
The sister of soul is love (cannot know soul but through love-)
Where Sophia is also the Christ is (R.Steiner)
..just some things I know about Sophia…
The trinity, Isis, Mary, Sophia (steiner)
She will “re – member” you…” her function is to re-member you–
peace
W -
cool, one of my fave names is Sophia and it was on my list should I ever have a daughter, I am happy to see that there is such meaning and depth to it!
-
you know it’s weird this holy ghost thing when I said I’m not a christian therefore the ghost has never been an area of interest I meant in terms of belief system but this ghost as woman thing has my interest piqued – I just can’t work out why I thought the ghost was a man and having not been to church etc. really do wonder where my assumption comes from. Are we just programmed to believe the ones “upstairs” or wherever they are are men? God how do they organise themselves? LOL I’ve read a bit about the cult of marion and the Isis books of spritualist group from the 1920s had me in their grip for a while years ago and it’s nice to see the steiner trinity reference William – all the flowers in my garden grew white the summer of the visits – even the collossal fiesta of colour seed bag gave me white blooms. Everything you’ve said for the last week has been a little memory trigger. I appreciate your words.
-
Holy spirit as part of trinity is “indwelling” Christ and is masculine of course. I learned same thing.
(now I’m learning something different- this “Sophia”)
I think Mary was elevated by some church council at some point (recall Jung writing about it) but Mary became a fourth person of the trinity…
guess it’s sort of complicated… the Mary thing…all that thelology and such of christian church a bit confusing but
I learn from an “esoteric Catholic” concerned with knights templars and all that… it’s so interesting when you start getting into it you start learning all these different things… (esoteric Catholic? huh? )
knights templars thing a very deep thing to some…
Holy Ghost different from this Sophia tradition which is more in esoteric
traditions…. sufi’s, tarot cards, cathars, St. Francis also, the wandering minstrels of poets singing of romantic love (love of feminine as disguise for
Mary worship…to keep from persecution by church)
Oh they’d just kill you if you went against church believe it.
But there was always strong tradition running in the background full of interesting knowledge, alchemy etc.. very important to keep alive this
tradition of knowledge (astrology included)It is knowledge of the spiritual world for real and very important to humanity…
there is good work being done and it’s all well looked after and there are some who are seriously building on the foundations you’d be amazed.Sophia has Her own trinity apart from the masculine one…
Mother- daughter- sister I think it goes like that… very interesting too..
oh well, But it’s pretty earthshaking stuff all in all this stuff about
human consciousness and spirituality, it takes a lot to bring modern approach to bear…. (in more than a half ass way but in earnest to really do it- requires great seriousness and straightforward no-nonsense approach to get to the real thing… and raise up the human condition etc..
there are some working on it… it will get done… a true spirituality for the modern age… not just a bunch of junk but something real everyone can get behind. It’ll happen. (slowly) It is very necessary eventually of course-
Sri Auribindo is amazing by the way…
So is Steiner… very interesting what happened in 1920’s… they say it all got blown away by the depression etc.. but that was like a start it seems to me… the clairavoyance etc.. Steiner quite real clairavoyant,…
Edgar Cayce etc.. there is this other world, within… and without
(but enter from within… the body is the door-) It’s important in a lot of ways… meditation practice etc… all very important- It keeps the world alive too. not just you– and this is crucial time--
Like your beat poetry here William… Fascinating thread.

give me kerouac I have to have more kerouac

Ahh more word memory triggers and ticking of boxes
I’ll check out Sri Aurobindo thank you william, steiner has always resonated with me – always like I heard the words before a long long time ago.
Yes – earlier last century – mass population upsurge of visions and similar – theosophy & spiritualism – faeries and daemonic reality abound in popular culture of those times. Coinciding with change in the structure of western society and ways of living & manufacturing etc. Inner visions hard wired to manifest when we need to take care in times of great upheaval? Same kind of global earth change upheavals as we are experiencing now? Inbuilt alarms? Interference from other frequencies? Chronos will tell.

The last century, the twentieth.
Amazing pbs documentary called The World War basically about all
this genocide….
the violence seems all out of proportion or maybe people were less
afraid to die? (cortez, not sanctioned by Spanish throne but actually
they tried to hold him back- slaughtered at least 250,000 innocence by
sword…this is so amazing to me…)And Mexico— there was another world… Nations now seen as
political /economic mechanisms only… but there was magic! Gods as real
as the person next to you!! (there still are!)The violence… (and the word from the spiritual is always “Peace”
What is life? A gift, from that spiritual realm…
There is such a thing as a gift. And I wonder if maybe Santa Claus
does not exist afterall sometimes…(what does not exist really?)This Earth, when you look at the other planets…. even the dirt here
is something so alive… hm.
