Astro-Decor: Taxidermy – Which Sign?

Nooo, I don’t know what sign she is but the taxidermed look is one I automatically connect with Scorpio & maybe a non-Vegan Aquarius?  Capricorn too. I know there is ‘cool’ taxidermy a la Wunderkammer – like antique scientific taxidermy…My browser playing up INSANELY so I can’t link where i wanna link with this. I am going to post this & try to fix it.

Obviously, i am semi-Vegan and a Veggo and into Feng Shui so it freaks me out on a Qi level. But i also know a whole lot of stylish peeps who do it and there IS apparently a sort of Eco argument to it. Over to you while i fix the browser – it is Firefox, bats just after each Full Moon – why? – WHICH SUN SIGN IS MOST LIKELY TO DECORATE WITH TAXIDERMY…

When i was a child i thought it had something to do with taxi drivers and got horribly confused, as one does.

    Scorpios. Aquarians.

I have two very close friends, both vegetarians, both former flatmates. The Aqua (Cancer Rising, Virgo Moon) is a male and decorated our living-room with a stuffed pheasant and a massive cowskin. the Scorpio girl (Scorpio Rising, Pisces Moon) did not like linen and had an impressive reservoir of sheep skin she was sleeping in and she loves to wear fur.

how weird. never thought about it.

    Happy Saturn in Libra!

That sheep skin idea is one of the most awesome things I have ever heard in my life! Whenever I see movies set in pre-history times or native american settings etc and they are making love in furs I have the most intense longing and jealousy!

Then I remember the plumbing sitch and I’m fine. But you r roommate ffigured out how to do both!

In answer to taxidermy question. I guiltily admit I hae always wanted a massive pair of deer antlers in my house. Not the head, just the antlers. For the symbolic alpha male quality. I have eros in cap and I just read Mystics soul mating book and apparently we are all about the alpha-males.

So maybe she’s aqua with eros in cap?

Thinking a Saturn angle also for the preservation thing. Cappy Moon in 8th and I took a crow to the Taxidermist. Found out I’d needed a license though to have a crow to begin with so had to scratch that, but would leave the dead crows, owls, outside in a brown paper bag and nature would clean them. Later made feather fans out of them.

At a time, the kids knew of my interest in crow medicine and they’d come home from school and say “Mom, there’s a dead crow at the bus stop” And I’d go get it..

I’m a multiple conjunct Aquarian and taxidermy scares the bejesus out of me. Just think of all those things you had stuffed eyeballing you around the room and plotting revenge in the wee hours…

I would suspect Cap or Scorp. Or maybe a Sagg who’s been a-hunting.

What I found disturbing of course, is that when I took the crow to the taxidermist one needed a license as usually one had ~killed~ the animal.

My purposes were purely spiritual as during a poignant transition in my life, crow’s feathers guided me and brought about synchronistic happenings as I found them on my travels (daily walks). This is why they and an owl became significant to me and by preserving them as a totem I had wished to honor them in that manner.

        May shamanic cultures do.

          1. Sweetpea’s avatar

I like that type also but here on the West coast, we have many barn owls. That was the kind I had found. A story to that too but it was an omen as one day when I was on the way to the beach, I looked out at the road and there was a dead owl looking right at me. I had to go back and get it.

sagg- no way! i can barely go to the zoo, the sight of animals in cages seems tragic. so hanging their dead bodies on my wall as decoration? id be in actual pain.

Yes, Anon, I feel when in synch, nature brings us such wonderful and magical messages.

Used to call it ‘dressing’ my dragon (large candle) as I’d do crows feathers on her. The tail feathers as a crown on her forehead was truly awesome.

Swear that one time when I’d had her ‘dressed’, the Pisces was over and he was lying to me. As he glanced at the dragon I just knew right then and there. Later found out it was true.

Cancer with Scorpio rising, no go with taxidermy here! As I live in the bush there are often dead birds & animals. I bury them with a nice bunch of leaves or flowers, and thank them, but don’t think I would ever feel the desire to preserve them and keep them in my house. I prefer live ones!

Robots, you had a Goth phase??? I think I had a mini one :)

I agree with you about the animals though i prefer live ones. And even though i’m not really into Feng Shui it’s got to be bad hanging dead animals off your wall.

I had a life size replica skeleton that i picked up from an ad agency (he was used in an IBM ad) and i loved dressing him up and taking photos but got rid of him during a decluttering phase. Didn’t want any skeletons in my closet hehe.

Yep Scorpio definitely – and the furs (but from animals that are already dead, not bred for the purpose, preferably. Ahem.) Also skeletons, skulls etc.

But then we all die, something that Scorpios are aware of every breathing moment, and all these things are momento mori and also a way of making yourself accustomed to death and to being around it, so as not to be so scared/worried about it.

I know a sculptor in Sydney, who used to run a taxidermy practice in Surry Hills. He has sun and venus in Libra, but Merc, Jupiter and Neptune conjunct in Scorp. Saggo moon.

He also collects Ken dolls, toy robots and crucifixes dating from the 9th century. Story about him here: http://www.smh.com.au/news/entertainment/arts/avenue-to-wonderland/2008/10/10/1223145609097.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap2

Never thought about this before in relation to taxidermy – but yes, Taurus/Sagg Asc. and I have always loved found remains of dead animals, and plants as well, but bones and feathers and have a big skull collection . . . not as on display as it used to be, I am lacking a studio space at present, but to me they are poignant delicate objects . . . I’d never kill for them, but I happily gather and display as beauty altho have buried-to-clean some skulls . . . .

hmm I so also have Uranus in Scorpio in the 12th house . . . but am such a novice am not sure that has any bearing

Vegan virgo and I don’t mind SOME taxidermy. I find the trophy-hunting-animal thing horrific, but if the animal died of natural causes/is artistically done OR if I feel like I have “rescued” it from a place where no one would have respected it in life I love it. I have a mink scarf (adorable, I can make one speak) that is vintage so was very old before I got to it. Love the thing to pieces, I find fur disgusting but for this piece I feel like it’s in a better home now that it is with super vegan girl who would have adored the animal during it’s life. I never feel bad about buying secondhand fur/leather for that reason. Otherwise the whole idea of it all is no doubt a terror!

    Reply

    1. Woman w multiple Hoofs’s avatar

I agree Lesly, have always felt that if an animal is killed at least honour it by not wasting its precious materials – and making sure they are worn back to dust just makes sense to me – as a flip to that, I always felt that if I were to be vegetarian it would have to be as a vegan – but am more comfortable with being a responsible, aware, choosey meat eater and animal product consumer . . .

sorry, tangent, I think the fur’s age is important – ie, old fashioned shot/trapped fur as opposed to farmed, caged fur . . .

      Reply

      1. Lesly’s avatar

I agree with you on the fur’s age. On the vegetarian/vegan note, while I was once a vegetarian now they make me sick (sorry, all of you out there!). Vegetarians only look for things that specifically say MEAT on them, when most meat products are not so cut and dry. For example: gelatin, rennet, amylase, aspic, castor, catgut, down, elastin, etc. The more one looks into what it used in everyday animal-product foods, the more disturbing it becomes and the less easy it is to wave it away off-hand and say “Oh, but I don’t eat hamburgers, so screw the rest of them.” Sorry, I think I’m beginning to rant. =)

On the taxidermy: Sun Aquarius, North Node Scorpio and vegetarian since birth: I both love the beauty of a wild animal statue as decor and am disgusted by the idea of a dead animal in my house. Cannot even stand to touch a fur coat (have always been terribly conflicted about those great vintage coats and sweaters with fur collars). I do especially love antlers, though, and have learned that they’re shed annually therefor I am stalking shed antlers on ebay.
