Beltane Vs Halloween

pin-up-sexy-witch

Some say that it’s Halloween soon. Well, if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, it is totally NOT Halloween.  It is Beltane, – Beautiful Fire – the festival of fertility, summer & renewal.  Halloween is more like Samhain – the spooky start of colder weather, the veils between the worlds are at their thinnest and so on…You are naturally girding thyself for colder weather, dragging  out heaters etc: Pumpkins, scary ghostly themes, whatever. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere happy Samhain and many profound thoughts honouring those who have passed on into the next realm.

But Beltane is HOT.  The old Pagan festivals for Beltane involved – basically – random rooting around with a view to honouring Dionysus et al & it feels right, seasonally…less clothes, brighter weather, new beginnings sprouting all over the place. There are a few different schools of thought re when exactly Beltane is supposed to be celebrated. Some say it is the Full Moon in Taurus (or Scorpio if you are in England, America etc) which would mean November 3 this year.  Others say when the Sun is at 15 degrees of Taurus or Scorpio – May or Nov 15 this year and others say Oct 30/Nov 1.  I favour the latter because it is 8 degrees of Scorpio and thus my Midheaven which means i can claim spurious witchy-goo goo links to Beltane.

Actually, I have a party on Beltane – the Scorpio Sex Academic’s birthday. I intend to wait until the Moon has passed Pluto (this evening Sydney time) and suggest she organises a Maypole for everyone to dance around. Or, this being a southern hemisphere Beltane, a novemberpole. Something suitably phallic at any rate.  Other than that, you surely all know the Beltane rituals by now: Clean house, get flowers, plant something highly scented and impractical, get new undies, smudge/space clear, make optimistic summery vows, get drunk and have some sex. Ish.

Deities of Beltane, should you be interested: Venus, Ishtar, Freya, Priapus, Pan, Dionysus, Flora and any nature god/goddess.

So given that the next week is the official “Countdown to Beltane,” with a hat tip to Saturn into Libra, might I suggest adding to Mystic’s list of things to prepare to do for next weekend? I will be:

*Stocking up on the bubbles (natch)
*Looking for a flowery new summer scent (because the franckincense-based essential oil combo I whipped up frankly makes me smell like a church) Somehting with gardenia would do nicely…
*Making a sexy summer iTunes playlist
*Purchasing some sort of bronzer/shimmer product

    And you?

I am looking for a new scent but lean toward the orientals. Even though its summer, since we’re honoring dionysus and sex that works right? I was thinking of my shopping list for the countdown week too CBA! We’re all in sync on this website! I wonder if it is affecting our cycles??

It’s my bday on 26 Oct, 2 degrees of scorp, and my midheaven is at 5 degrees of scorp. Any ideas on what this conjuction usually means? (I think it’s the conjuction sign??). Also have mercury at 7 degrees Scorp, and Uranus at 11. Pluto and Venus not far behind in Libra too.

I for one am looking to the drinking and random rooting! Yay Beltane!

      love it….bring on the Beltane!

i’ve been hunting a new summer scent too…. wanting something with verbena in it (all zesty and summery) i ended up repeatedly trawling towards serge leutens Russe (all cinamony)…in the end settled for a zingy lime and coconut body wash….something about that scent evoking energy and fun (reminders of a bit of pick me up zesty lime…a little coconut sun lotion – or even better pina coladas…ahhhh)

…flowers and itunes playlist are in the works.

      …random rooting around….hahahahaha….i’ll take anything i can get…hahaha

A good organic coconut or vanilla body lotion works REAL well and au naturel too. I have a really cheap hemp body lotion ($12) that people gasp at when they smell, beg me to tell them what i am wearing as it smells so amazing so i lie that i have some lady in milan who is famous to the cognathingie and that she makes it up for me. A secret formula, lol.
As for the rooting etc, pagan festivals are definitely more fun than the christian ones.

I’m happy for you to claim the Midheaven link, Mystic. And makes perfect sense. Personally I always thought it was Nov 1st, and that Holloween in Australia is actually Beltane-eve.

Are Beltane preparation rituals the same as Halloween preparation rituals?

I mean really, get drunk, and have sex? In the Northern Hemisphere? But it’s so cold, and it just started snowing yesterday where I am. Can’t we just get drunk and then go to bed? :)

The lightly falling snow is beautiful though. I’m thinking a spirit circle would be a luvverly thing to attend at the mo.

I have little monster fairy lights for my room and I bought new bed linen today (ooooo-er). Will crack it open for Beltane:)
I lack a little black book… maybe I should acquire one between now and then;)

Halloween will be on a Saturday night this year in the Northern Hem.

Just what we need. More nuts than ever will be out. For me, will be lighting some candles and keeping a good vibe. Children add to the innocense of it all, but some wicked things go on. Satanic rituals, etc.

I had a ghost experience (think I might have mentioned it) last month and so still have some frankincense, myhrr, cedar and sage left. Will burn that on Halloween.

Apparently, from what I learned due to a spirt in my bedroom, spirits most active around the time of the new moon including one or two days before and after. Some say full moon also. The more evolved spirits do ceremony during these times.

One day before the New Moon had some strange things go on. Then, one day after, saw the spirit in my bedroom.

Saturn and Virgo New Moon were sq. to my Mars-Asc in Gemini.

The event chart for that time, shown the Ascendant exact my natal Pluto on the IC. Both were the same exact degree.

This was no coincidence…But spirit contact is not new actually. Moon in 8th and during the 90′s Neptune and Uranus were both conj. my Moon inconjunct Mars on 12th side of Asc. There is not enough space here to recount the goings on back then with many other worldly things.

But this recent ghost phenom is why I have limited my wine intake esp. as lowers the energy vibe. That night I’d had a “bit too much” and got the holy hell scared out of me. I was callin’ on all the teachers, Masters I could think of and luckily, it left. It’s an inconvenience/bummer to have to worry about going home to what might be in ones environment. Home should feel like a comforting place, not a dread. So my advise is have fun but keep your sanity and think about what/who one is mixing their energies with.

Happy beltaine! I usually have a halloween party for my buffday, but I’m too busy doing folio until, like, the 22 of november. So I’ll have a beltaine party then. It’s gonna be ‘glam beachwear’ themed. Bikinis and ballskirts! Boardies and tuxedo jackets! And the random rooting to honour the gods, of course.

Interesting read….Sweetpea thanks for your insight….i had an experience this morning while home alone and have just lit some candles and asked for some diving help to shine some extra light over the spirit that came by…..i was sat here and the entire wall of my house next to where i am sitting banged…such a load crashing noise i thought a car had hit the house….went to investigate and nothing…

i always feel energies more intensely during the Sabbats…

    peace n love to all

Not certain if any homage to Dionysius happens this weekend in Grafton but it looks like some tame dance steps honouring the Beltane vibe will occur:

Happy Beltane to all. It is a lovely hot day here (Australia) in keeping with the fire theme!

I am leaning towards the 3rd November being the actual day and we have a public holiday then (co-incidental but welcome!) and shall be celebrating the holiday, Beltane and my birthday. Bring on the bubbles!
