Hoodoo Voodoo Potions

essenceofbendoverip

Every Dark Moon it seems, I am drawn back to this insane yet compelling Hoodoo Supplies Shop in New Orleans…I find myself there, every bit as inextricably as if i had been physically wandering past and lured in by a strong whiff of well…where do i begin??  This Essence Of Bend Over has an interesting story behind it.

And I love how the spells suggested for use with the love potions (incense, oils, washing powders) involve the reciting of Psalms…With the Follow Me Boy Vigil Candle, for example, the head Hoodoo Witch suggests using Psalm 23.  See Also Come To Me Oil.  I have been toying with the idea of ordering some of this stuff & doing a little blog-diary but i’m worried it might fuq up the Feng Shui. They’re different systems…i do love Psalm 23 though…

  1. Thank you Mystic, I was given a gorgeous book of spells and these are the ingredients… and I had no idea that they ACTUALLY existed. This website is now in my favourites x

  2. I really got into Vodou & Santeria a few years back & had some incredible experiences. This reminds me I have a collection of oils somewhere!

    • I had a fascination with it too LL – the intertwining of the catholicism and the offerings – such a rich and vibrant belief system and so often misunderstood. It is in some ways similar to the use of sigils by Auston Spare. And the sympathetic magic aspect is common to many religious systems. I discovered a little talisman recently that is of this system (hoodoo) and for a while couldn’t remember what it was and kept being drawn back to it and stroking it and then a shitload of $$ poured in unexpectedly and a few weeks later it dawned that the little talisman was a draw money one from 4-5 years before. The money would’ve come anyhow – but possibly less as there was the potential for it to be less – but it was the coincidence that I loved most.

      • That is how we started Whatever, discovering something that my friend identified as being an eshu & the journey begun from there. Am having fond memories of leaving offerings on major crossroads, discreetly collecting handfuls of dirt, singing Pomba Gira to the pigeons in the laneway near my office & twirling, perfecting my spray of rum with my offerings every monday…..eep am just recalling the jaunts to Chinatown to buy pig’s blood – now that was an icky one to deal with!

    • Have you read “Altar of My Soul”? that’s been the extent of my research into Santeria but it is a great book. So not what i expected with all the stories you hear about voodoo. It’s a fascinating religion.

      • No, I haven’t come across that book, surprisingly, considering all that I have read! Once you start you find so much more to learn & other similar religions like candomble, you’re in for a long ride…

  3. so Mystic if you tried them together, would that then be Feng-doo? Hoodoo Shui? Feng and Voodoo are both pretty intense magicks (whatever word you want to use there) so i wonder what sort of energy mix you’d get if you spritz on the ‘come to me oil’ and then activate one’s love n lust (does feng do lust?) directions….maybe they’d work sympathetically and voom! Mr All time soul mate knocks on your door. OR – what’s the word when 2 medicines cancel each other out (gah my vocab has crashed lately) – just a fizzle. hmm

  4. Just a few days ago when buying my usual supply of incense, i saw a new one called
‘Sex at the Beach’ and as i was heading there, of course bought some for the shack:)
Perhaps they were made with Goa (India) in mind or developed there.

Earlier today was reading Vanity Fair (Christmas edition to salivate for) & noticed the ingredients for ‘Amber’ by Prada.
Resin de Labdanum de France….Fueilles des Patchouli d’Indonesie…..Resine de Benjoin de Siam
    …..Santal des Indes.
So Benzion (not easy to obtain)..Sandlewood (W.A now has the best grade), Patchouli leaves
    ..and Amber.
These are mostly base notes & fixatives so this is one parfum that would be on you for DAYS.
Notice all the parfum designers are doing purer blends and/or single notes.

I think of Eartha Kitt when it comes to exotica & Dorothy Baker, ‘Amber’ sounds like their sort of
    aroma:)

A retired perfume maker donated benzion, ambergris, civet, musk to me as now unobtainable
and Aromatherapist won’t use any animal secretions. Made some heavy blends for friends from those rarities, mixed with easier available ess oils.
Very very unusual & primal with staying power.
    Have you heard of Opoponax?
Very dark coloured oil supposed to be the base of Opium. Love the name OPOPONAX.

Love the Voodoo that You Do.

    • Sex On The Beach is the name of a cocktail beverage: if the incense was made to smell like the flavor of the drink (it is fruit based) that wouldn’t be odd at all. However, many spiritual supplies are based on the odd names alone, and scents like Jockey Club perfume which were not originally created for magical use became standard due to the name (Jockey Club came to be considered lucky for betting on horse races, and for controlling people – as a jockey controls the horse. Also it became a general luck fragrance since many versions had a horseshoe printed on the label.)

  5. Years ago in London one day I was on the little red bus that goes to Nottinghill/Portobello…seems the local voodoo mamaqueen decided the bus needed some kind of red magic, so on board she comes, chanting madly, swathed in layers of red garb, red paint on her cheeks & madly waving her little red beach bucket & spade about. She was amazing.
