The case of Laura Dekker, the teenager currently before the courts seeking permission to sail solo around the world for two years is interesting. She’s 13, nearly 14 & mad-keen to do it. Her parents (this is a long story so am not going to go into it here) seem to think the sailing solo bit of it will be fine (she is apparently brilliant at it, grew up on boats, both the parents have done solo round the world trips etc) but are concerned for her wellbeing “in 3rd World ports” etc.
As I spend the week before I turned 14 skulking in my bedroom listening to music alternating with four hour poncing-up to go to the mall to visit my obsessive crush interests, Laura’s astro intrigues me.
She is in fact, a Virgo and with Saturn currently BANG on her Sun. That’s like a heavy Dad influence though it could also signify the courts involvement in her life right now.
Mercury Retro & Venus in Libra. Moon in Leo or Virgo…None of this screams solo round the world sailor. She’s got Saturn in Pisces opposite her Sun in Virgo…more Dad stuff & Mars/Pluto in wilful old Scorp…Jupiter in Saggo – the classic globetrotter but I think this is taking it a bit far.
Okay, Uranus/Neptune in Capricorn trining her Virgo Sun but squaring her North Node in Libra….I wonder how she manifests the Libran Vibe in her life? And if this is something she truly wants to do? She is a rebel but is she rebelling by wanting to sail around the world or would she rebel by being more of a “normal” teenager? Or more of a Virgo-Libran type. Saturn opposite Sun can blight your light & so right now she’s got Saturn ON her Sun, opposing her natal Saturn, setting off her essential Sun vs Saturn conflict.
Thoughts?

Does she have a positive father complex perhaps? The Jungian, not the Freudian, version…
-
She reminds me of Bindi Irwin poor thing, i am not sure why and it is so sad that her mother had nothing to do with the raising of her. If this is how saturn is now it would be interesting to see how she goes at saturn return. I thnk maybe the dad is trying to raise her in his own image…only child. This only way she can impress him or something. Maybe i was a particularly shallow teenager but this seems a bit much.

Knowing hard Saturn aspects to the Sun as I do perhaps she is mature for her age?
Still, that is far too young in my opinion and I wouldn’t let my daughter do it unless there was another boat following along!
Heard an Aussie teen, Jessica Watson, is doing the same and leaving in mid September? I read this on another site. Apparently her birth date May 18, 1993.
Have Libra NN too Mystic but with Saturn sq. from 7th. Relationship stuff is how Libra NN manifested for me. In 5th though so hopefully creativity comes of it. At least that’s what I’m working on. Who would of known something lovely can come from bull? (joke)
Haven’t a clue how her Uranus-Neptune in Capricorn manifests sq. her Libra NN but wonder what the house placements are.

I quite like this youngster, and there’s a part of me that wants her to win. Maybe biased but to me she vibes very Capricorn – that precocious, over achieving, independent, confident and capable child energy (I was one myself, so I feel for her…)
Not an expert but have been brushing up, so I’m gonna give this a go for fun… I reckon the answer is in her houses, which without a call to her mum for birth time is all speculations, but…
If I go with my Cappo hunch, and she has relatively evenly paced houses, then…Cap Ascendant – aforementioned smart and capable kid, puts her Virgo Sun (currently Saturn transiting) in her ninth house – the desire for adventure and a world-sized challenge…?
IC would be Aries – a determined little loner…
2nd house Aqua – a natural gift for ‘water-bearing’ perhaps… And Saturn in the 3rd, so she’d learn alot from a challenge like this.
If its a Leo Moon, then probably Eighth house, which sounds a bit like ‘gone fishing’ to me…?? And Merc and Venus sitting in the 10th sounds like a career (and notoriety) totally entwined with the things she loves and longs to do most. How you think I went?
-
I think you did great Lexicorn! I mean your astro had me right there on the boat and I want to go now too!
-
Well you’d probably have to take her to court to do that…!
Thanks Sweet.

It fits!
However, what’s the freakin rush? She’s got her whole life to go on whacked voyages. I believe all 13 year olds, male and female, require a chaperone at all times for any trips further than the corner store. And at that age, they are not built for solitude, although I suppose she’ll twitter the whole fuqing thing until we’re all sick of her.
Haven’t any of these people heard of pirates? She shouldn’t be allowed to do solo anything until she’s old enough to handle a kalashnikov, get a black belt in karate and fire a cannon on her own.
-
Maybe concerned for her wellbeing regarding 3rd world ports is really code for ‘there be pirates…?’
-
Then there’s yachties!!!
There’s still a lot of pirates around SE Asia and East Africa that I know of. Dangerous bastards too, not Johnny Depp.
-
Not that she is sailing the Amazon, but isn’t there pirates there too?
-

You so right about the pirates, and these days they don’t even have the decency to wear a patch and a parrot so how could the poor girl be warned!
I got the Virgo Moon, over-protective parenting thing going on myself, but I reckon they should let the poor thing go the second she turns 16. Otherwise how else will she claim the record – it is all about the glory after all. Mind you, judging by the Aussie 16-year-old’s incident last night, perhaps we are all better off on dry land…

It would be hard to figure out placement of houses without a time but you’ve done well! It’s very close to mine! I have Cap Ascendant, Saturn Aqua in 2nd house. Venus in 9th, sun and Merc in 10th house, moon is in 11th though.

And from memory, you’re more of an astronaut than a sailor, yes?

Wouldn’t you know, i have Jupiter is Saggo, ALWAYS thinking of what other country i want to
visit-live in for a few months. Next year for sure i need to groom my wings & fly.
At 14 i was immersed in ballet & dramatic art, then discovered boyz….oops end of theatre-performance
art.
Maybe she just needs to meet a nice boy, she is too young to handle pirates & places like
Haiti & other sleaze like ports.
Hope the courts veto it til she’s 18 at least. Going to far just to impress Daddy if that’s the case.
Sail round OZ & close Islands to prove herself, methinks.-
Have Jupiter in Sagg too Pegs. Married a foreigner and usually hooked up with foreigners since seventh ruled by Jupiter. My ex’s Jupiter was on my Sun. No wonder I married him!
Agree about the Pirates and stuff. That is just plain dangerous. No, hell no…
This year had to travel vicariously through my patient’s adventures….Greece, Canada, Hawaii….boo-hoo

And speaking of this young woman being Dutch and foreign places…First time I went overseas through Amsterdam didn’t know there were buttons on the seat to change the language of the movie.
So I watched Shrek in Dutch and didn’t understand a word.
That has totally gotta be an Aries lame brain kind of thing to do…And peeps think we got it together! (speak for myself?)-
Shrek in Dutch – too funny sweetpea

At 14 I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life and I was at war with my mother for 12 months trying to convince her to allow me to do it, she won I lost and have spent a whole life doing other [useful] things but not my dream. It has remained a Paradise Lost situation for me, now with more knowledge I understand parents fears and protective instincts, but I think ‘children’ sometimes know what they need and parents could provide more careful ways for them to fulfil their dreams without killing them altogether. I have 6 planets in Leo and my mother was a sole parent Cancer, you might think I would have won but mother rules…… I wanted to be an artist and she thought I would fall into unsavoury company, which I did as soon as I possibly could anyway, well by her standards that is. So, who knows what this girls destiny will be now the whole world is involved in her fated outcome.

Gawd, I don’t get parents who try to stifle artistic kids. WTF? Would she have rather you associated with bankers, lawyers and stockbrokers? They’re a real savoury bunch.
-
-
lll a parallel story to yours sort of… the only thing keeping me sane at 14 yrs was being an artist…my right brain dominant mum just didn’t get it. Kids can be incredibly intuitive about their own needs & desires; they can be confident & empowered if that inner voice is nurtured by their parents, or stifled & frustrated if the parent/authority overrides it….the patterns of a lifetime are imprinted by the dynamic.

Apparently she was given her first ‘yacht’ at 3 years of age. What do you think her parents had in mind for her future? It certainly wasn’t humdrum was it. I feel sorry for her. The pressure is on for her to succeed and if she fails it will be a public humiliation – al la her clash with the 225 metre ship.
A bit like the RACQ ad (I think it’s RACQ). Charter boat? What charter boat?
How the HELL could she miss THAT coming?
-
That was the 16 year old Aussie (?) girl. She was out for less than a day when she pranged it. Sailing the open ocean requires experience I think, not just willpower. It’d be like letting Matty Minerva race the Grand Prix when he’s on his learners.

UBERS the teen Mystic refs above is NOT Jessica Watson – tho imagine banging into a ship when you’re not even around the first bend of the first island – bless – back to square one!!
check out how movie-star-sirenesque she looks in the video news still http://www.smh.com.au/national/collision-at-sea-jessica-very-lucky-says-safety-chief-20090909-fhaq.html
