I have always loved The Thunder, Perfect Mind - a sort of Gnostic Goddess incantation that was discovered hidden, in 1945. It is most likely a la Sophia, the Gnostic Goddess of Wisdom and what they say the Holy Ghost actually is…
Gnostic Christianity is unreal – The Matrix and Blade Runner are based on its belief & the clip below was directed by Jordan Scott. Gnostic is from Gnosis…knowledge. They say they are the true, thinking, Christians. Oh and btw, this is an insanely brief summary of what they think & Gnostics themselves differ.
I love how they are sensual, eco, non-judgemental & their worship naturally has a God and a Goddess, equal. They lose me a bit on some of their other beliefs. I don’t care if this short film IS a scent ad – I love that they filmed The Thunder, Perfect Mind. The woman is Daria Werbowy, the Scorpio supermod.

Very interested in Gnostic concepts, though I don’t think it is considered a Christian sect ? you will find it predates christianity. The biggy with the gnostics is that Yahweh was considered an evil god or demiurge who basically trapped and enslaved our souls down here for his own purpose. The serpent therefore is the saviour in the adam and eve story, bringing us knowledge to escape the grip of Yahweh. This of course is like the reverse view of our Judeo/ Christian beliefs. Most gnostics were wiped out by the romans once they had bought ’soul’ rights to the ‘christian’ franchise.

isn’t there some gospel of mary magdalene that the gnostics have? or was that later version of the gnostics?

As you may be aware Im a gem asc, so I only have gnostic_lite information
I don’t know much about the crossover between Christianity and the Gnostics ? There obviously was one though. Seems that in lots of ways they were diametrically opposed. How can christianity, which is originally a sect of Judaism accept that Yahweh was evil ?-
I’ve only read bits & pieces but I think they had something to do with the kabbalah – isn’t that a type of judaism? I don’t know much about yahweh. Isn’t that just another name for God? Or does it mean something different in judaism?
Amazing how all the big religions are so interlinked and when you go back to the roots – they have so much in common/influenced each other.
The whole gnostic sophia concept is beautiful. I think theosophy is also loosely based on many of the gnostic ideas.

kabbalah as we know it was really a creation of 14th century spanish rabbis. there is said to be a much older version which was secret ? well only spoken, never written..passed down. This uncertainty has led to a variety of groups adopting ‘kabbalah’ or a connection to kabbalah while its actual content (if there was any, prior to 1400’s) is uncertain. Much easier of course to manipulate information that way. The manipulators have turned it in to a nice little earner. Kabbalah this Kabbalah that, its mostly fairy floss.
Yahweh was the god of Abraham, ‘I am that I am’, was actually his earth name. YHVH, more precisely Yod Hay, Vod Hay. The unspeakable,

When Constantine made Christianity the official religion for Romans he held a council (Nicaea) in 325 AD to sort out the many Christian sects and make one established dogma and labeled anything that didn’t conform with the resultant party line to be Gnostic. What became Gnostic covered volumes of early Christian writings which were destroyed. It was brilliant political strategy to unite a very scattered belief system comprising not only the various extremely diverse Chriatian beliefs but pagans aslo.

You’re right, david. Gnosticism is pre-christian. Wisdom cults/sects were always around, and I’m sure cut through every religious practice they encountered. The Essenes weren’t techinically a gnostic group, but more of a mystic/estatic/messianic sub-sect of judaism, if I recall correctly. First century jewish hippies? Feel free to correct me.
The wisdom cults active during the formation of the New Testament got a lot of bad press from Paul in his letters. And probably with good cause. What Paul argued is that you don’t have to have an special kind of knowledge or pass any sort of test to know or encounter God; God was available to everyone. The wisdom cults thought otherwise –thus the emphasis on having certain experiences or studying with certain masters in order to achieve such knowledge. (Typing this I realise how mainstream Christianity eventually adopted the experience/knowledge test as proof of salvation. Hm.) However, I would never naively lump all first century gnostic/wisdom cult activity into one or two statements of belief! I doubt we could even know the width and breadth of their practices and beliefs. (see CC’s response below).
My point is, there’s always a lot of money to make off knowing God. Passing exams/proving one’s worthiness (hello, scientology?) is one expression of late Roman gnosticism. True faith in the pagan gods had long gone out of favor and wisdom cults (of all flavors) were hugely popular in a very, very religiously cynical age.
Love me my Sophia, tho!! Thanks, MM, for great vid.

One of the bones of contention at the Nicaean Council was the divinity of Christ. Because a Roman Emperor was divine the Roman’s couldn’t possibly have a religious founder who wasn’t, so regardless of the various ideologies, Christ was declared divine and all other ideas were declared heretical. In the sixteenth century Pope Leo X is on record as saying “it has served us well, this myth of Christ” Most of the so called heretical groups were left in peace till Innocent 111 (what a misnomer) pulled a crusade in 1208 on Raymond V1 Count of Toulouse because he was too powerful. Innocent claimed the area was heretic because the region was Cathar Christian and exterminated them. Again political. He set the Dominicans up as the Inquisition and the burning times began.

Yes who is God? and who is the Devil – it gets confusing when you study gnosticism, but as evreyone definately *knows* ‘The Devil wears Prada’

I’ve never understood humanity’s obsession with a personalised anthropomorphic god. Religion always seems to boil down to dreary power, politics and social control machinations – there’s nothing otherwordly or even spiritual about it. It’s such an obvious human construct designed to artificially shape and manipulate the beliefs and subsequently behaviour of people belonging to a particular social system.
I suppose from a historical and cultural viewpoint it’s interesting to discover the roots of a society’s beliefs and moral constructs, but you know other than that it’s kinda incomprehensible that people really take the myths of religion literally.
Not trying to be controversial or offend anyone here, just am genuinely perplexed by the whole subject. That being said am generally questioning my own spiritual persuasions at the moment, wondering if any of it really means anything and is it not possible that it’s all just a load of wank and wishful thinking.
Maybe it’s bloody Pluto doing my head in again? Maybe I’m watching too many X-Files reruns …. hopefully the truth is out there!

So who are those three females always running around? Her inner holy goddess trinity??? I like the bit are the end where she goes up the escalator and sees herself going down. Pity the actual perfume itself smells like, well, a candle from k-mart.

but all of the above is just the power play that has always been part of any organisation. Peeps forget that Church and State were inseparable till the reformation. The real christian church then and now is all the little people who like to follow a code of behavioural conduct to give their lives meaning. Not everyone has the curiosity to investigate other pathways and if a religion has an seemingly acceptable moral code or is what their parents taught them, it’s the one they follow. The spotlight is shone on the dirty deeds department and the good, behind the scenes work done by a far greater number is ignored. When a priest is outed for damaging little kids it’s only the priest who is a shit, not the possibly hundreds of parishioners who feel the shame but still keep their own moral standards and go on doing good in their communities.
-
Absolutely true, CC. And thank you for the clarification. I have met and worked with loads of the little people doing good in their communities. In fact, don’t think it’s possible to escape the religion power-trip unless a person gets down into the humbling task of serving their fellow man. I mean, REALLY doing the work and not just showing up for the photo-op.
