“This lady-fly I take from off the grass,
Whose spotted back might scarlet red surpass.
Fly, lady-bird, north, south, or east, or west,
Fly where the man is found that I love best….”
- John Gay (1685 – 1732)
Ladybirds or Ladybugs are called such as they’re meant to be of the Virgin Mary…Pre-Christianity, the Ladybird had names pertaining to Venus & the Norse Venus Freya. Other names: Ladyclock, Mary’s Beetle. So cute!
If a Ladybird lands on your hand, it is said to be always good luck and a sign of prosperity or love en route. The Ladybird lands on your hand and then zooms off straight to your true love. You either follow or trust the Ladybird to inform the would-be lover.
They’re practical too; they are such obvious magnets for predators that they emit a vile scent to put them off. A rank odour from, apparently, between their legs. Yick. And they lay golden eggs.

Their children are hideously ugly, too – like bizarre sci-fi insects. I guess they can’t get pretty til they learn to protect themselves – wise move.

Its true. THe moment when a ladybird lands on your hands is a magical moment. Where do they come from? WHy do they land on your hand? Where do they go? And it is a special feeling, somehow signiciant, fleeting, comforting and mysterious.

Awww that’s beautiful. It’s instant love when you see one now I know why they evoke that feeling.

Ladybird ladybird: lyrics
Ladybird ladybird fly away home,
Your house in on fire and your children are gone,
All except one and that’s little Ann,
For she crept under the frying pan.Situational Nursery Rhyme
“Ladybird, ladybird” would be chanted by a small child when this pretty, little, inoffensive insect landed on their person. If the ladybird did not fly away of its own accord the child would gently blow it away chanting “Ladybird Ladybird fly away home”. This insect is commonly found every summer in the gardens of Britain – the most common colour is red with black spots, less common are the yellow variety. This nursery rhyme is purely situational and has no basis in history for its origins.Because I think they are so sweet I’ve always felt sorry for Ladybirds re the rhyme, I googled. As children we were taught to say the rhyme and make a wish if one landed on us.

Awwww! Everyone I know loves ladybugs. And they are the one insect people don’t want to squish as soon as they see. This made me feel loved inside.
