God I SO wanted to be part of the No Poo movement – it totally fits my uncluttering ethos and everything i’ve ever read about sodium lauryl sulphate & associated foaming agents is actually quite scary. When you research the idea of going without shampoo & obviously conditioner online, most people are just raving about it.
After an initial phase of “transition” in which the hair “adjusts” to its new more healthy & untramelled state by being itchy, greasy or whatever, one’s hair is meant to look stupendously fantastic. In the meantime you deal with it by washing with just bicarbonate of soda & vinegar.
I am soz to say that i could not last out the transition – it immediately induced a situation of celibacy, Not-The-Typical-Virgo thought it was a neurotic manifestion…something to do with not being grateful for modernity and my Cancerian son with multiple planets in Leo agreed only he was more rude: “When are you going to stop doing this dark ages shit and get a fuqing grip and just go to the hairdresser?”
It honestly looked kind of like the above hair only not so orange and with way greasier roots. Awful. Also, i can see the point of going sans shampoo (and the organic ones don’t really work so well anyway, so you may as well just ditch the whole concept) but then you may as well go with no hair dye. So I gave up & subjected my hair to some industrial size vat of Delva at the hair artistes – felt fantastic. Invented new theory that skin responds marvellously to organic products but that hair craves chemicals.
Now I have Venus in Pisces & Moon in Libra – i truly don’t mind a bit of artifice. And my Gemini Hairdresser is also psychic and a friend of mine so I am happy to see her but i’m interested -
Are there peeps out there who are Off the Grid so far as hair is concerned??? No shampoo. No conditioner. No product. No hair-dyes. And you just sort of comb through some bicarb from time to time? The only results I have ever had worse than the no-shampoo phase was when i made my own “nettle shampoo” and oh hell, HENNA.
I realise this is going to be controversial but i think in many cases henna operates as sort of a chastity belt.
SO which sign has the most Au Naturel hair and whom would literally rather visit hell than be without their G.H.D. and/or hair-molecular restructuring potions? Naturally, I nominate Leo as Haute Hair Obsessive, followed by Pisces & Libra with maybe Aquarius.
Most likely to do pioneering No Poor hair: Scorpios & Arieans. Gemini in theory but could not resist fiddling. Also, is massaging your hair with bi-carb that sensual? Or do you just keep bunging oil into it? Please don’t anyone moralise me because I could not hack it.

Let me speak for all Leos. Never in a zillion years. Hair-washing is hygenic and it is part of a vital ritual that can be quite spiritual. Yes to not using crap shampoos and though i know wot u mean about organic shampoos they are getting better and better. Sorry to be like such a leo archetype but i adore going to the hairdresser and few things make me feel so happy as swinging around a beautiful big head of shiny hair.
-
What she said!!
With my broken arm, I have cut back on the frequency of hair-washing (it is such a pain in the patootie… plastic bag, elastic bands yet the thing STILL always manages to leak) The most I can go without washing my hair is 5-maybe-6 days. And by then it is driving me C-r-Aa-zy! Clean hair puts a spring in my step. No shampoo and no product? Ridiculous! Really… what will they think of next?
Leo with leo rising

Soz, but Venus in Leo, and I cannot go a 24 hour period without washing my hair. Sometimes twice. I know that sounds overkill but sans washing my hair goes into complete grease mode, it really does.
My hair though now shorn and shorter is completely part of the entire look, I even feel upset when I scramble upright after a massage and find I resemble a cockatoo! Though I couldn’t be at the stylist’s everyday, I do need to feel finished via hair primping otherwise it just doesn’t feel like the day is right.
-
Le Scorp on the other hand, fuqing gets on with it with a once every 7 weeks haircut, NO shampoo, he doesn’t even comb it. Just runs his fingers through it. It’s so low maintenance, it isn’t even funny.

Well said one virgo one! Am so simpatico
-
I wash my hair every morning. I look and feel gross if I don’t do this. I know this is considered ‘overwashing’ but don’t care. My moon is in Libra
Love beauty products and things that smell nice
-
agreed. sun and moon in libra. if my hair looks awful then my day is awful and i spend the whole day worrying about it.
-
-
i also need to wash my hair every morning of i feel ‘unclean’ even if i’ve showered. been told many times im a tad neurotic about this. but then was vindicated because i saw a segment on that show Whats Good For You, where they showed you what a scalp looked like a week or two without washing. disgusting- all this yeast and bacteria growing. the woman in the clip almost sprinted home to wash her hair. and thats how mine feels too sans a good wash. i dont dye my hair anymore but at school a whole bunch of us did the henna thing- it was very indie rock chick 1992 era. chastity belt indeed! i think the boys became a tad intimidated by these flaming red headed gals striding across the quad each day. hilarious in retrospect.
oh, and the only thing i can attribute the hair thing to is my natal saturn in virgo- the need to feel ‘clean’ before i can start my day. certainly not my sagg planets, which quite happily can avoid ‘grooming’ for days at a time.
-
My hair hasn’t had a shampoo for years, don’t use product…then again I just give it a no.2 clipper all over every 3 weeks and i feel like a new person. I used to have a curly mop some time ago and I think the reality is if your hair is longer than 2 inches it needs to be cleaned or it sorta starts smelling, but bi carb and the like should do the job…Ive read some terrible things about what shampoo can do to your immune system…I was once told some shampoo can cause fertility problems in both men and women ? To me the biggy is hair dye, girls leave that shit alone its like pouring draino on your head, worse, if its not one of the more obvious targets for cancer researchers then something is wrong..
-
how’re you feeling today davidl? better I hope
-
just starting to feel human again, but my 6 year old has it now, he had us up all night with a 40 plus temp…this is the worst flu any of us have ever experienced, if there is a vaccine or something out soon, take it ! and thanks for asking x
-
My Mom got the flu shot and did not get sick. You’d have thought there a strong possibility since we live together but she didn’t get it.
I drove in the same car with my daughter’s fiance and got it immediately as he had not been feeling well. And I hadn’t had the flu since I was 14 yrs old. Crazy strong bug this was..We had wondered about the pig…
It took a full week to feel better daveyl. I don’t wish the flu on anyone…Awful. Hope you and family get well soon doll…
-
Poor you and poor little man. I always swear by Vicks rubbed on chest and feet to help keep chest clear and keep warm. Eucalyptus oil in an oil burner and hot lemon drinks. But nothing helps very much for the first few days. Blessings

david Arian Ex never washes his curly mop. it works. for him. as a Libran with much hair, clean is good, as is low maintenance, aided by quality natural product.

My littlest sister has always had ratty, fried blonde hair – too many home dye jobs. anyway, last time I saw her, hair was FABULOUS. I couldn’t believe it, she could have been a hair model. Guess what she had done? Stopped washing it. She rinses it with water and then uses conditioner but only washes once a week. I swear, it works. I tried it but only lasted four days. I felt soooooooo dirty! I did however manage to adjust to washing it every other day instead of every day. It’s better but no where near as fabulous as my sisters. And FYI, she is a Virgo! lol
-
So she only washes it in water, then conditions? Does it hold style?
I might be able to work through not shampooing, but will never ever ever give up my blowdryer.
Deodorant is interesting too. In Japan no one wears it. Had to ferret around for a pharmacy that had some, and I never noticed B O on anyone. I also know elderly people who’ve never worn it, including a tradesman, and he doesn’t smell even after a day’s work.
-
Yes, she rinses with water, conditions then styles as normal. It’s probably the best hair I have ever seen on anyone. I wish I could take it. I might try it again.
-
I use no deodorant either and yes you go through a phase where you are uber stinky for like 4 weeks and then it suddenly stops as long as you are eating healthy food. Eating junk food, lots of red meat, lots of dairy, or not having enough zinc in your diet (common cause of vegan stink), will make you stinky again.
-
My friend did the no hair washing thing for a while – she used to just get it wet under the shower every morning, and then once a week she’d put a little bit of conditioner on it. No shampoo. Then she’d blowdry it. It looked really good, but then her hair looks great whatever she does with it. She’s a Gemini.
I on the other hand will do whatever it takes to wash my hair every single day, even if it means sticking it under a cold tap. Virgo, Leo rising.
But I did recently swap from anti-perspirant (i.e. supposedly stops you sweating) to plain deodorant (just makes it smell more pleasant) and was amazed to find it made hardly any difference – I was expecting massive sweat patches!

Pisces, Leo Rising…have always been obsessed with my hair. I used to work in an office with a double Leo and another Leo former hairdresser- turned corporate-type. We had a pro hairdryer in the office drawer for ‘fixups’ on rainy days. Everyone else thought we were bonkers being so hair-focused. We genuinely couldn’t understand how everybody else couldn’t understand us. I like the idea of saying no to product but the reality is if I haven’t washed my hair for a couple of days I feel completely out of control, mentally unhinged.
-
I wash 2-3 times a week, mainly because any more than that, and my oil production goes into overdrive, and I look like I have gross hair even if I just washed it.
The other thing that limits my hair washing is how THICK my hair is, and how much of it I have. It takes hours to dry, even tho I do have the bulk cut out by my hairdresser every few weeks. To put this in perspective, my ponytail is an inch thick when thinned – unthinned, its OTT.
I also have wavy hair, which I straighten, so for me to wash, dry, then straighten daily, I’d have to be up at 5, and ONLY do grooming, and I can’t be arsed. I have a life, and I go to the gym. Hair grooming is a must do, as I need to look professional for my own self esteem, but I’m not a slave to it.
My hairdresser however has done the no shampoo thing, and its the best her hair has EVER been. She had to get through the first month, but after that, she’s never looked back (its been about 9 months).
I use organic shampoo & conditioner, and it works, altho the new conditioner is not so good, so will revert to the other one (Giovanni is the brand), plus I routinely do my hair with bi-carb to remove chlorine build up. I tend not to colour my hair, as it is so dark a brown, any ‘other’ colour does look false, and thats jut not me. I also know that if I use cheap and nasty hair products, my scalp goes dry, and starts to flake… and thats just not attractive.
Scorp sun. Mars in Leo in the 5th

I <3 Giovanni esp the 50:50 one.

Hey postmodscorp, seem to be honing in on your comments tonight. Not sure why. I too have voluminous thick hair which defies description at times. But I do the ghd straighteners just about every day. Could not do the no wash thing…. uuurgh shudder. I’m with you on the everyday thing, too much maintenance, however I do go there in the humid summer months as, well, a Leo, I have hair standards, and shit hair = wasted day
I use a de Lorenzo treatment (which I buy in bulk from hairdressing wholesaler) instead of conditioner ’cause of the ghd use. De Lorenzo is Aussie made and natural (according to my hairdresser). Every 6 – 8 weeks I get two to three colours of 3/4 head of foils done by my little hairdresser Leo sis at home at product only prices. Leo sun, Pisces rising.

ah this post gave me such a laugh! I keep alternating between being completely organic and then craving the chemical benefits….
Don’t look at caps for the whole off the grid thing, I know about a million and all love the hairdresser and dying, shampooing, conditioning etc. though it could just be my friends.
People with curly hair seem to go days without washing.
Oh and I have some friends who lasted the whole transition and their hair just looks normal… maybe it’s just some ppl it works for? Depending on hair type, oil production, virgin or dyed hair etc etc?
-
my boyfriend does not wash his hair, with either shampoo, bicarb, vinegar or any other thing except water. He has been like this for around 5 years. he has very curly hair and claims shampoo makes him fluffy and frizzy. He rinses and massages head under warm shower everyday though. I must say his hair is lovely and soft and never smelly (I hate that strong male hair smell).
He is a Sag , libra rising and moon in leo.He does try to convince me that shampoos are very bad for you – and yes i do know they are – but I have very straight hair that shows up the grease and i could not bear the 6 months of hair hell to get ‘back to nature’.

only wash my hair once a week
don’t dye it
don’t brush it
don’t dye it
and am always mistaken for a Leo -
I need to wash my hair every second day now that it isn’t dyed, but when it was lightened and bright red over the top I NEVER washed it. Mostly this was so as not to wash out the red, but it always looked great, never oily. I resent the fact that it looks bad after 3 days now, when I used to go forever before. Maybe I’ll have to give this a go, at least its winter – lots of hats can be worn.
-
My hair is anything but natural even though people swear that purple looks “natural” on my head, as if it naturally belonged there. :p I need too many beauty products.
Libra Sun: Scorp Moon: Saggo Rising
I did however a few years ago, go through a “natural” phase. I dreadlocked my hair which means washing your scalp with Dr. Bronners with your finger tips about every 4 or 5 days. What they say is true, your hair will stop freaking out and making a messy stinky oil pit after a few weeks. It seems to reach a maximum of dirtiness and will stop. But yeah after cats chewed off my dreads I went back to straight hair and beauty products.
-
cancer sun brother has not washed his hair for years and never gets ‘haircuts’.
shaves head, grows curls back to collar length, (never brushing or shampooing), then when curls are too long, shaves head (occasionally into temporary mohawk or mullet).
this is his established, long-time haircare system – works for him!
Mystic, what planet rules the hair? Venus?
-
I HAVE to wash my hair every other day otherwise I feel disgusting and really self conscious when I go out. I think if it meant that I would end up having better hair I *could* put myself through it (if I didn’t have to leave the house) but I think it’s probably ruined from all the henna I have used.
Cap rising, aries sun, moon libra. Oooh, and Taurus Venus. -
I do wash my hair, it’s fine and oily so I have to. But I have never used deoderant, and i never will. If you are not a smoker and not a heavy meat eater and you wash yourelf every day and wear clean clothes, you should not need deoderant at all. Plus I think that these things mask our natural scents, and I worry about attracting some guy who’s actually attracted to my deoderant!
-
seabird you’re precious, I’ve never heard it quite put that way but aaww. Love by deodorant?
Unfortunately, there are peeps who think they don’t reek but heavens to betsy, they do. I had a yoga teacher who was uber vegan but MAN, when he came near you to adjust a pose you did it without taking a breathe in…can you imagine doing unjaya breathe around him???
But for others, their natural scent is amazing, you’re lucky.
-
give him some zinc! the stink should go away. :p if it’s not the zinc it may just be “hunger breath” from not eating very much. People who are fasting or doing that F-Atkins diet thing have funny smelling breath.

There was a BBC docco recently on ABC2 and the female reporter didn’t wash AT ALL (her body and everything) for 2 months. It was quite a laugh. She resolved she’d still like a wash, but nowhere near as much as she used to.
Also, on one of the commercial stations (Maybe on ‘What’s Good For You’?) they had a boy and a girl visit the scalp specialist for scalp photographing before and after a month of no hair washing and the scalp doctor was adamant (and had disgusting photos of flakiness and irritation to prove it) that people needed to wash their hair. It was quite distressing!
I personally think it’s a personal thing – some people can do it and some can’t. Just like – I get allergies from wearing metal. It’s one of those unlucky things.
-
I wash my hair once every two weeks, if I remember. Lately I’ve been going the four weeks before my hair appointment to without washing. I have a very short cut, that’s supposed to look a bit spastic re. Oh-I-Just-Rolled-Out-Of-Bed-Very-Stylishly-What’s-Up? so I don’t even have to brush it ever. It’s so fantastic! I use a dry-shampoo if it gets too greasy most of the time. My hairdresser is allowed to do whatever he wants because he somehow always know what I want all of the time. He doesn’t even ask anymore, he just changes small details and suddenly it’s perfect! I love it.

One way of getting around the awful chemicals in shampoo (and soaps and so many of those other luxuries we love) is to use products from the Natural Olive Oil Company in Margaret River (and no, I don’t have any affiliation to them other than the fact that I am a total convert to to their products). All of their products really clean, and none of them have nasties in them. And they all smell so beautiful (says the pisces …). Plus I haven’t had skin this good since I was a kid…
-
My hair kind of “goes to seed” when shampooed- so the only time that my hair is washed is when it is cut.
I do plunge in salt baths however.
I find my scalp crap/ hair oil to be “great product”.
I do supplement with hair balm which moisturises (and smells like cut lawn).
My hairdresser (also a piscean) is aghast (so can’t say it’s a sun sign thing?).
-
like the concept, hmmm bicarb? with 4 girls constantly needing to comb through long potentially nit infested tresses however… can’t contemplate life without conditioner. I would love to ditch the need to buy all those freakin plastic bottles, vowed the other day to find a bulk source. Everytime I throw them out I see them floating in that massive island of plastic in the ocean vortex near Hawaii! eeewww !!

Oh my goodness the idea of no hair washing is a truly frightening thought. I am a pisces girl with venus in Pisces, and moon in libra and i cannot imagine the no hair wash thing. When i had blonde hair, i developed such a good relationship with my hairdresser that every fortnight when i got paid i got my roots done – so everyone thought i was a natural blonde (this lasted for over 2 years). Now i’m brunette, but when backpacking around Cambodia earlier this year could not even think about leaving without hairdryer and GHD. They didn’t get used much after the first 2 days but i knew they were there if needed. The travel pack of products i took with me was heaven and bliss – and my little piece of home that travelled with me. i can’t imagine doing it any other way.
-
Mystic, please tell, what is that a picture of – a camel makeover, electrocution, or some kind of strange Ilama? Reminds me of Dr Seuss character
-
So my sun sign is Leo and I did the no poo thing for a few years – I also had dreadlocks. Apparently my hair didn’t smell. Since I cut my dreads off, I only wash my hair about once a week, more because I went to the hair dresser, they used shampoo and then after that my scalp started feeling itchy… But yes – maybe will go back to No Poo method…
-
Have dyed my hair ever since I discovered my 1st grey lock at the tender age of 15 and was mighty horrified. Grandma on mum’s side was silver at 30… So I suppose it means my brains are fried by now…. ah well..
Peeps mistake me for a Leo – used to have the Leo mane in in the 80’s a la Tina Turner – I have some funny stories about that.
Chopped all the hair off after my divorce 13yrs ago. Have progressively chopped it off ever since. Now sporting a very short red textured mane which is instantly recognizable and so easy to look after and only requires product for definition…
The only washing my hair undergoes is when at my stylist – every 6 weeks to keep the cut amazing. I “wash” my hair only with running water every 2nd day. Don’t even need conditioner.
Would love to have it shaved off totally one day, (Gi Jane – oh yeah!) just to experience the feeling and grow it out a few centimetres to see what colour my hair really is…
Also love wearing wigs out to parties – have lots of fun with that!
Mystic – I love the pic – and yes fluid feline – reminds me of a Dr Seuss character!

Well, before my dreds went in I spent weeks washing my hair with pure soap to strip off the layers of filthy product. I believe the flaking and greasy scalp is also like a detox, a shedding of layers of the stuff. Then, presto! clean scalp n clean dreds for 3 years. I love my hair, it’s full of stories… beads, tiny stones, bits bound with wool n ribbon. The beach is the best treatment… salt water does it the world of good. But I haven’t been for over a year; my hair doesn’t smell and it rarely sees water of any kind lol.
My flatmate shaved her head 3 times and her hair grew back thick n lustrous n coppery waves. No shampooing for 3 years, and just the very occasional pure soap wash. Finger-brushing only. Lovely. She’s a saggo.
Fully agree re the animal proteins making stinky. I don’t smell now unless I have a coupla drinks or sum other sin lol. Here’s a trick: boil bicarb in water and decant into small pump-spray bottle. Effective, safe, odourless. Cheap.Scorp, cap moon, leo mid.

Not only do I have Leo Rising but I also have fine, curly hair with oily roots…not washing is just a NO-GO, although I do wait about two days between each wash. And hey, a lot of Lush hair products have none of that SLS crap and work a treat, plus I feel much better using them on my body than some creepy chemically shite. The only product I use besides the cleaning stuff is a little no-frizz goop to help my curls look nice, and I air-dry it…I’m low maintenance Leonine but still proud of my mane.
