Music Of The Spheres

“The short-lived but profoundly influential Pythagorean Brotherhood sought to unite “religion and science, mathematics and music, medicine and cosmology, body, mind and spirit in an inspired and luminous synthesis”. [2]

“The Pythagoreans used music to heal the body and to elevate the soul, yet they believed that earthly music was no more than a faint echo of the universal ‘harmony of the spheres’. In ancient cosmology, the planetary spheres ascended from Earth to Heaven like the rungs of a ladder. Each sphere was said to correspond to a different note of a grand musical scale. The particular tones emitted by the planets depended upon the ratios of their respective orbits, just as the tone of a lyre-string depended upon its length. “

  1. Thanks for that david, and MM, I love these posts, and the illustrations. I had no idea Venus was such a photogenic planet. Very pretty.

  2. To my ears the pluto beat sounds just like african tribal music.

I have been thinking a lot about the connection between musical scales, colours and numbers. Thanks MM, for putting me onto Mr Kepler.

  3. well this is a bit of serendipity – am working on designs for a series of sound healing CDs at the mo! Apparently sound is an energy that makes up the universe everything being in a state of vibration and all …

  4. I LOVE soundscapes. Did you see the post on Deuter a while bk??? I also have this thing that just plays all the Tibetan chimes. And i have real chimes as well, obviously. And did you see the post on planetary tuning forks? Is it a good idea, do you guys think, do post links to other similar posts beneath posts? My grammar is seriously rooted tonight but you get my gist?

  5. I think that is a tops idea MM ! Especially for people like me who come and go due to spending long periods away without the world wide web. It would be a great way to keep the older post current I guess. So much wonderful info on this site, it seems a shame for it to just slip into the archives.

  6. I suppose that’s what the tags are meant for, Mystic but sometimes people find it all (the net in general) a bit difficult to navigate. Anything that makes it easier to find stuff would help.

I love the diversity of content that you provide. Always stimulating and there’s something for everyone I reckon.
