I know how genius a lot of you are at dream interps – help! Last night I dreamed – amongst other things – that i was leaving something mundane like a cafe or a Pilates class & walking through a beautiful park where there was a huge owl and a huge raven fighting. It was not like they were fighting to the death but more like really intense ritualised sparring & yet somehow i got between the two & was sort of trying to separate them.
Googling Owl & Raven symbolism comes up with shitloads of bible stuff (the crankier end of it – such as secret codes & that the owl, raven, hawk etc are all connected to the Goddess/considered unclean) & I WAS thinking that maybe the Owl is like Saturn and the Raven Uranian…the Trickster….Thoughts??? And has anyone else had dreams lately of two entities fighting? Or that symbolise Saturn-Uranus?

Another thing you can do to work with dreams—
1. write the dream down in sequence as remembered– this is the body.
2. write it down again only mix up the sequence, use when this happened
then this happened but mix it all up, last things first, middle things last etc..
– this is the soul. (and begins to give you feeling for the flow of the currents in the dream.)
3. distill a haiku from feelings in step 2 – this is the spirit (hold that, and bring down into your heart area in meditation so you can bring dream energy , the spiritual creatingness of the dream into the world-
step 2 also a wonderful way to strengthen etheric body
also calms the dreams down a lot pretty quick to get to essence of them like that and hold to it in heart space …

The owl is a symbol of knowledge and is also linked heavily to night and darkness and the moon as it’s nocturnal. The crow (consider it a raven) when appearing in dreams is said to represent fear of misfortune. Maybe representing some inner conflict? An exercise between your more and less rational sides?
-
also alchemical, from “Lambspring”-
“The next emblem, number 8, the central emblem of the whole sequence, pictures two birds, a red and a white, fighting each other – one above, the other below. The verse indicates that these become transformed into white doves and becomes a Phoenix. Thus at this stage, the polarities fight, absorb each other and are reborn in a new form”
Also remember that imagery from some greek literature, some general or something seeing two birds fighting … some sign of portent.. some great event perhaps.. can’t really remember, pretty sure from some ancient greek scenario tho’…

a raven is a crow in the same way that a square is a rectangle . . . where the crow dies in misfortune, the raven is what remains after the dust settles and life moves on.

Very interesting. Birds to me are symbols of spirit/soul, since they have that transcendent ability to fly, but these birds both have a dark quality. The raven and the owl are depth symbols I reckon.
Owl nocturnal, but light coloured, active at night and its night vision symbolizes insight. Deep and ambiguous because its a symbol of yang within yin. Could be saturnine as saturnine energy is contractile/structured i.e. essentially yin.
Raven is also ambiguous, active in the day but dark coloured, often used in films or gothic novels etc as death image. Yin within yang, darkness visible. It could be more tricksterish. I know you’ve had raven dreams and experiences and you seem to be attracted to them and resonate strongly with Uranus.
A ritualized sparring rather than a fight to the death would indicate that they are meant to be opposing forces, engaging with each other just as yin and yang are meant to. Saturn vs Uranus. Night vision versus darkness visible. Your conscious intervention could be a struggle of your conscious mind to reconcile the ambiguous forces, or when you say separate them, perhaps you’re trying to delineate or understand (grok?) them better.
I’m not dreaming of Saturn vs Uranus of late. Too busy to dream. I’m living it out.

mystic, in terms of Jungian perspective, it would be far more about your own associations with the owl and raven than universal symbolism. (ie, my associations for them qould be quite different to yours, as would everyone elses etc .) what do those animals represent to you? if saturn and uranus archetypes fit your meanings to those birds, then that’s what your subconcious is referring to. I think its a beautiful dream- and very nicely done that you step in to sort out the sparring occurring. sounds like a healthy conflict/engagement in which you are in the middle, trying to sort through it. and the fact you leave your ‘mundane’ environment beforehand speaks to this being a rich part of your psyche you’re stepping into to engage with these two other parts of you.
i havent been having fighting dreams, but i definitely have been having far more intense dreams than usual. and can completely feel shaken up by the whole uranus retro thing.

I kind of agree but always follow the ideas of the collective unconscious: symbolism is innately part of our unconscious and we present ourselves with archetypes that we did not know we knew the symbolism of.

both there birds are linked to goddesses of war. The owl to Athena and the strategy of war and the raven/crow to the Morrigan and the cleaning up after battle. Is there a battle of some sort coming up?
-
Two sexy but very different types of man (birds of a different feather) fighting over you lol!? Sorry my dream interpretations are always too sexy and very shallow but wouldn’t that be HOT?!

classic ! LS, you never let us down..

Divine M darling, this dream very interesting indeed… I agree with Saggigal in terms of the symbolism most pertinent would be that which is personal to you. However a few thoughts.
In China as well as Tibet I think, there is a practice called Crow Augury which interprets crow calls as predictors of events/the nature of the times, etc. So to me, I have always looked at crows with interest as I had seen older relatives in tune with this practice though I would be hopeless at it..
I’d rather the Socialite’s take to be honest because that is HOT but here is what I would sense from that dream… the owl is like many above said, insight, wisdom, intuition. Seeing far in darkened circumstances without being able to provide proof of knowledge except that you KNOW.
The Crow/Raven is a portent, possibly fear of what may happen. And therefore, the ritualistic sparring is actually a conversation between your soul (intuition, the whole) vs the mind (logic, compartmentalization, what ifs). So depending on what has preoccupied you lately, this may be you subconsciously pondering what to go with, whether you approach intuitively through the dark, while managing your fears of what conventional wisdom would caution you against.

soul vs mind. I like it.

Thanks Uber… its always the way with me

Looking at my medicine cards, Owl = Deception (helps you to see the truth, esp through dreams and meditiation), and Raven = Magic (magic is in the air, helps the magic of healing and helps bring change of consciousness).
So maybe about a big change in conscious? Maybe some ‘truths’ are bubbling at the surface, don’t resist them/try and push them down?
Or could be this is a hugely magical time for you, and you can use magical practice/intuition to gain great wisdom?
-
Yes, i also go by the Animal Medicine Cards. Love them.
My dreams lately have all been about animals. For a very good reason.
The dreams of white & sunburst yellow chooks have stopped me eating meat.
Our evolution, Imo, depends on how we humans treat our animals from now on.
Dogs have no sense of future. They know past & present only.
Were we not told to live ‘in the NOW’?
Perhaps that’s where the power lies, instead of giving it to the past or future.
Dreams are my night movies, a clearing house for the subconscious, a process of the day or week.
My Mother has been in my dreams nearly every night, 15 years after her ’suicide’.
SHE had to move from a big space into a smaller one & it destroyed her, and that’s how i have felt about
my ex move.William, know exactly where you are coming from.
Up to my 6th viewing of the Matrix. Will never tire of Keanu Reeves face. Love that face & voice. -
What i have figured about soul spirit & mind.
The soul is in everyone but it takes spirit to move it.
The mind guides the spirit, the spirit guides the soul.
The spirit acts as a ‘thought adjuster’ as in oops ur going the wrong way.
Pyscho Cybernetics says if things ain’t going right, your’e going the wrong way.
Guess like being at the airport when your ship comes in.These are very important times for those that are aware.
Pray for guidance.-
reminds me of the rabbi’s saying …you are a soul with a body not a body with a soul..

Nystic, do you have a native American spirit guide? Both the owl and raven are strong symbols in their culture – are you experiencing a spiritual conflict or are the birds heralding the arrival of an imminent message?
-
The essential element of dreams is the self!
The symbols are only pictorials of personal identity.
Here are two opposite in a ritual dance of conflict.
Implication being there is something looming and there is a choice of two paths but there is dis-ease associated with the choice.
Perhaps the choice you are about to face or make is not altogether wholesome and your inner wisdom is offering you a warning that there is a dark side to consider.
Both these symbols are parts of your own internal personality and character.
Consider the implications before deciding.
Look both ways. -
Mystic, I am certain that ravens are divine protectors of women. has anyone mentioned this yet? I thought it was well-known. I have never been afraid of them.
-
(Better late than never?) I agree with Aquarpio’s suggestion of tension between your rational and non-rational sides. An owl is a common symbol of wisdom; a raven is intelligent. Subtle difference. Also the owl’s association with Lilith supports non-rational, feminine knowledge. The vibe from the raven is more masculine and rational. And although these two forms of knowing initially appear to be in conflict, the sparring is a par de deux.
-
I like your interps Aello.

Nice site too, BTW.

I was listening to a doco on ABC radio the other day, they were saying that basically crows (and I imagine ravens) are more intelligent than chimpanzees, who have always been seen as next in line so to speak. Now chimps are about 96% same dna as us, we are slightly more intelligent than a chimp but possibly similar to a crow or raven ?
-
have heard that too, but some time ago – all about how they use tools a lot despite not having opposable thumbs, not even hands.
I have been puzzling on the two opposing symbols in this dream as there is much stuff on owls and ravens/crows. Very tired (not enuf alone quiet qi time to ponder with school hols). So want to look at this but much good stuff to ponder already posted. Wish I could do it now.

Might it be two kinds of wisdom battling it out?
