Merry Moon in Virgo and, to help channel the discriminatory powers of our Virgo, please bitch it up re the most fuqed make-up or skincare product you ever bought. Mine tend to be something gushed about in a mag that I am reading at the hairdresser & yes i KNOW that those reviews are not objective & all. They’re usually something like one of those illuminating primers or a magical concealer that apparently everyone else in the world but me ADORES & it accomplishes these supernatural results. On me? A greasy little powdery slick of glitter-infused toxic goo that is guaranteed to have someone saying ‘what’s that crap on your face?’ And then you feel stupid for having blown the $ in the first place, sigh.
I think you should only ever buy such products on a Friday – as it is the day of Venus & when the Moon is in one of Venusian signs; Taurus, Libra, Pisces.
Your Anti-Product Recommendations??? Bonus kudos for if it’s a super-hyped product…We need to know!

Alpha-Hydroxy Acid facial lotion w/SPF 15. Different brands. The SPF makes it greasy.
L’Oreal tinted facial mineral powder. The brush sucks…The powder not fine enough and goes on far too strong.
-
The L’Oreal is also shiny/greasy looking with crap coverage. total fail!
-
-
Aesop Ginger lip balm – bleeds like nobodies business and the jar leaks. They don’t tell you when you go in asking for a little something to slip into your purse to keep the lips happy when you’re out and about that it MUST be kept in the fridge. WTF? So it turns into a crazy volatile substance that leaks when it isn’t kept in fridge because it is no longer solid and the jar was designed for a solid. I had a mad back and forth with the Aesop peeps about it – they insisted it would all be fine if I kept it in the fridge but that’s not convenient is it?
-
That is so impractical! Lip balm to be kept in the fridge? humph i say humph
-
-
Oh so many… I agree about the L’Oreal mineral foundation/powder, by the way. Also turns darker as you wear it.
A good one, though, to even the score is id Bare Minerals -truly does look and feel like you’re not even wearing make-up and the brushes are really good *and* come with a shampoo. Just stay away from the “warmth” bronzer stuff, or at least it’s not for me.
I think the worst I’ve ever done though was this balm from Benefit, can’t remember the name but it’s supposed to be amazing and good for all skin and you put it on under your powder or whatnot to make it stay put and it’s supposed to make your skin velvety smooth and be weightless, etc. All lies! It’s heavy and waxy and after a few hours you look nasty and leprous, patchy, gooey, gross! And I think it made me break out, too.-
…”id Bare Minerals…”
Yes, adore it!!
-
ha same benefit balm prob!
it is called ‘doctor feel good’I am loving my bare minerals – i think there is a big market for beautiful lasting powder compacts now with the surge forwards in minerals.
-
I’ve been wondering about the whole mineral powder thing. Is its upsurge related to the wonders of nano-technology? the same wonder that’s getting all that bad press?
Not seen a product package that acknowledges nano content.
Does anyone know?
-
-
-
Lol! All the Benefit products make me break out apart from their lip and cheek tint which is amazing. I hate that YSL touche eclat stuff. It is always on the must haves of people as making you look fantastic but it is just expensive goop.
-
Most hyped to moi are:
Certain MAC products(eye primer, certain eye shadows/creams), because unless you have three hours to shellac your face into a mardi gras mask the once adored intense pigment starts swirling with your natural oils and you just end up looking like you had it out with a rival crib gang in South Central.
Fuqing Cetaphil which got uber hyped by every celebrity from here to kingdom come…and it looks like well, THAT last word. Or to be rude, it would be handy if you were recreating a porn vid and your partner simply tapped out and you were on the last frame, you dig?
Plus it never made my face feel truly clean. What’s that all about?
Overpriced “eco” brands, there’s a parade of them, too many to mention but they make you feel holier than thou as one ought to after having diverted funds that could go to some poor orphan’s education for a face cream that isn’t even that yummy smelling and just sits…there.
And lastly, a word about matte red lipstick. Now I respect the hot and quite intense look of a woman with artistic red lips but let’s face it, it’s hard to apply perfectly and looks shite if you so much as happen to put a finger to your lip in thought.
I could have dealt with all that to achieve my Singapore Air/Cathay Pacific Hot Stewardess look until the Agro Virgo (and if any man would it would be a Virgo) told me that men don’t get the red lipstick, and he thinks it’s actually scary verging from goth scary to Aunt Mary scary.
So I think when it comes to slap, there’s artistic i.e. this is make up thou shall not touch for the rest of the night and purposely for camera perfection, and there’s hot and touchable, where it literally works so well that one begins to embody a living heatwave.
-
Red lipstick looks better with a bit of shimmer or glossy looks sexy.
Matte can be a bit strong or odd looking. It’s much harder to wear.
Try MAC Russian Red Lipglass or Revlon Red.-
Yes, ST… my trick with red is to use a gold flecked gloss on top of it so as to create shine. I’m going to check out the Russian Red though…
-
fallen angel=that sounds hot esp. for summer.
-
I like all these red lipstick tips…
But I use the eco QV stuff… I swim in public pools and have sensitive skin, so I find its one of the few products that moisterizes (sp?) enough, doesn’t give me pimples and doesn’t make me break out in a rash.
-
Venus-go-go
Do you break out after swimming? Is it from the pool chemicals?
I’ve been swimming alot lately and have recently broke out and had flawless skin before. it is horrible! -
I honestly really rarely get pimple… but I found that, because of the chemicals in the pool, my skin dried out, then I got a few… then I used heavy duty stuff and to stop my skin from cracking, then I got a few more. The Qv stuff I find the right balance for my skin…
I find break outs happen when my skin is unbalanced (too dry… to, erm, moist?).
Its like you need something that is heavy duty, but breathes, you know? You need more than a light film… I am not sure how sensitive you skin is. I used to swim with a friend and she used sorbelene all over her body and face. HUGE tub and just lathered it on… her skin was lovely… my skin would have a freak out. I use the QV day cream (with sunscreen), eye creeam and night cream.
That’s it for my beauty regime. Give them a whirl. Not overpriced… they have a bit of oomph, but aren’t too oily or aggravating.
-

-
-
-
Oh fallen angel, you have totally hit the nail right on the head with all of the above…. so true!!
-
Maybelline Great Lash mascara, the one in the pink and green tube. Everyone I know – including my mother – loves it to bits, but all it’s ever done is give me raccoon eyes.
Bare Minerals, however, makes my life better. I adore using the liner sealer with black powder liner to get the perfect cat’s eye – better control than the traditional felt-tipped pen style.
-
I totally agree with the over-hyped Maybelling Great Lash mascara. It’s dry and doesn’t do anything “great” to anybody’s lashes. I’ve tried it on a number occassions and have been continually disappointed each time. Go the Lancome Hypnoise mascara – best in the business.
-

Anything with the claim “can appear to reduce visibility of fine lines” – they don’t. Notice the careful wording? Pure suggestion. That way the company can’t be sued for false or misleading advertising.
Anything that says non-comedogenic – it isn’t. Read the fine print. Usually clarifies with “non-comedogenic on normal skins”, which simply means if you don’t usually get blackheads then this won’t give you them, which in turn is utterly absurd since most people have blackheads to some extent.
Head and Shoulders is the best dandruff remover if you don’t mind having your scalp actually eaten away in an acid bath. Dandruff is caused by allergy to hair products – most of which are petroleum based and irritate the scalp thus requiring that you reuse them again and again and again. Only a few people actually have true scalp problems due to hormonal imbalances, the rest are perpetuated by all the shit that we stick in our hair. This of course does not stop me sticking shit in my hair.
I hate fuqing beauty products. It’s all such a load of hype and sham, deliberately exploiting people’s insecurities. If the world is ruled by Satan as suggested by davidl I think on another thread – then L’Oreal is the fuqers marketing manager.
-
prowincat- I love this line:
“If the world is ruled by Satan as suggested by davidl I think on another thread – then L’Oreal is the fuqers marketing manager.”lol!
-
yes brilliant prowincat!!
-
-
Yes, and honestly, do we even think Halle Berry needs any slap at all to look that good?? So funny prowln…
-
I switched to only using Alchemy shampoo and conditioner thinking other sulphate-ish products were causing bad effects but I must admit – and I’ve given it a flamin’ good go of about 6 months – my hair and scalp were better before. That’s annoying when it’s $13 a bottle.
A friend also said her hair got ultra dried out from using Alchemy. Bugger cos it smells so nice.I’m going mega old school next – dissolved bi-carb, maybe some rosemary oil… And if the Amish approach doesn’t change anything , I’m going back to $2 Coles shampoo.
-
i tried Alchemy shampoo too – it’s SO over-rated!! It was like using dishwashing liquid on my hair – very drying. All natural is not always best i’ve realised. Another all natural/no sulphates product that i found rather harsh is Natural Instincts.
I’m trialling Aesop shampoo at the moment. So far so good.
-
One of my girls tried Alchemy and it dried her scalp horribly. I’m using the remainder to clean the bath hehe
-
-
I was using Alchemy shampoo, but needed a ton of conditioner afterwards. Have switched to MOP – so far so good
-
oh yeah… i should give MOP a whirl at some stage. My hair is so dry i can go about 7 days before any natural oils appear and always need to pile on the conditioner!! Have dry skin too… might be my Cap rising.
-
-
-
-
*bows* I’m here to amuse
But I’m digging this Amish idea …. or perhaps just reptilian hippy and no hair washing at all?? Let the natural oils and Ph sort itself? Will probably end up looking like a rastafarian but with this upcoming new moon venus cancer 1st house new look thingo that might be appropriate.
-
used to get dandruff, then changed to sls free shampoo and LO! the dandruff disappeared. Also johnson’s baby crap, got given some when my daughter was an infant, used it a few times and she would scream and scream after her bath, she too has a strong reaction to sls, and johnsons is full of horrible ingredients that no mother should put near her childs private parts, or body at all. They are psycho promoting the use of those chemicals on anyones skin.
-
-
Anything by Chanel. Was once suckered by the free goodies bag to purchase overpriced foundation that was so perfumed I couldn’t wear it, and ALL their stuff is perfumed to the max.
Estee Lauder and Clinique mascaras suck (hello racoon eyes) but I love Napoleon mascara.
And Angel, I love Cetaphil, have been using it for 20 years, recommended by a dermatologist. Maybe it’s cause I have sensitive skin it works for me, gets everything off and is cheap as. Have to agree on it’s appearance though
I’ve found the Ultraceuticals range of skin care amazing. It’s Australian and IT WORKS, there is something for every skin type. And it’s fragrance-free.
-
I love Chanel’s Vamp, but yes the cosmetics are too perfumey! In an old French lady in a pink wig kinda way.
-
I so cannot hate you for using Cetaphil, it’s really it being more over hyped here, one would have thought it was heralding the second coming of Christ… haha…
To me, if it works for you, then great
-
-
I find myself checking two websites now before buying cosmetics:
http://www.cosmeticscop.com – Paula Begone’s site where she scientifically reviews all cosmetics on the market. You have to pay to get the whole thing but even the reviews she doesn’t charge for are helpful.
http://www.makeupalley.com – People post reviews of products they’ve purchased. You need to sign up with an account to read the reviews, but it’s free.
-
hey prowlncat have u tried aesop for hair – i use it to great affect, yeah its expensive but i dont seem to use so much of it all the time and get good results. sorry if this seems like a plug i dont work for them. i have noticed this year that i am slowly shifting to expensive high end products – choccolate candy and beauty – is that the pluto in cap vibe ??! high end quality goods = discerning frugality !
as for cetaphil. dont use it in the dark. it does have a sort of perculiar glow.-
OMG I’m totally using it in my first porn vid, ha ha… not.
-
-
This is scary! I owned some Revlon ColourStay Foundation once. Colour Stay all right. I spilled a drop of it on a bench top and didn’t clean it up straight away. It never came off. Never. No matter what I scrubbed it with. I didn’t try a chisel, as I didn’t want to damage the bench. I’ve moved, but I reckon it’s still there.
I never put that near my skin again. (Jane Iredale all the way now)
-
Uber, methinks we should recommend it to the Dept of Roads and Highways for use in signage. It probably has excellent UVI properties that make it resistant to weather exposure…
I knew there was a reason I was always a bit scared of Revlon..
-
-
Not that its expensive as such but: Anything AVON – I can smell Avon on a person a million miles away and just wish the entire franchise would… die out.. sort of like the rest of the 1970’s because the smell makes me nauseas / headachy. Most perfumes.. including LuLu unfortunately which I used to love but has the same effect as AVON so I just console myself on the money I’m saving. Supermarket Shampoos and Conditioners starting at $7 a bottle that promise the world and smell like Jiff. Bodyshop body butters – they feel sort of ‘rubbery’ and once the initial hit of scent wears off it smells quite plastic and ‘toy make-up’ kits for girls that smell like some sort of industrial waste – evil evil evil shit to expose to children. My fav product is Premium Spa Lemon Butter Salt Body Scrub as it has REAL essential oils, organic olive oil, almond oil, sea salt and makes my skin smell and feel divine.. trouble is I can only buy it from PriceLine shops and they are a hike away from home. OH! and I HATE products that say ‘Soap Free’ then you look at the ingredients and see Sodium lauryl sulfate or Sodium laureth sulfate which are both INDUSTRIAL GRADE DETEGENTS!!! Grrrrrr.
-
I do not like MAC eyeshadows either. I keep trying them because everyone raves about how they are the BEST eyeshadows in the world, but to this day I have only found one that applied easily, stayed where I put it, and didn’t make me look like a trany.
I also dislike Burt’s Bees, especially the lip balm. Everything is way over fragranced for a line that’s supposed to be natural. My SO claims that he can smell their Honey Lip Balm from halfway across the room, and I don’t doubt it. Also, it felt very waxy and not very moisturizing to me.
Finally, I hate products that contain mint oils; they’re irritating and burn in the worst way since the oil gets absorbed into the skin where there is nothing you can do about it except wait for it to dissipate on it’s own. Usually, there is no real reason for them to be in products, but despite that they seem to be everywhere: facial cleansers, shampoo, lip balm, conditioners, face masks, toners. I’ve probably returned more products for this than any other reason, and I don’t even have sensitive skin!
….
“If the world is ruled by Satan… – then L’Oreal is the fuqers marketing manager.”
Prowlncat – You have made my night
-
Alexzandra, I was going to mention Burt Bee’s, that’s another marketing wonder IMO…I originally fell in love with the whole honey powder thing then tried all the other stuff which was all very waxy.
I cut it out when it finally dawned on me that Burt wasn’t exactly hot looking himself and if he used any of this shite, then he ought not to look like a salty dried out sailor.
-
I think MAC is just way over hyped in general. All their products make you look like a tranny! The foundations and powders aren’t fine and are really heavy and everything else looks like grease paint -actually not so much tranny as clown.
-
-
nutrimetics avocado eye oil…..only used it once at a demo and my eyes disappeared. It took three days and antihistamine to find them, then when the swelling and redness went, they were as black as a losing boxer’s. Not pretty.
-
I had a similar eye experience with a Garnier green-coloured moisturiser. It reacted with my eyes so badly I swelled up in pain and it looked like I was in the desert with a sex disease. It must’ve got into my eyelash follicles. But frankly, I didn’t put it on any differently to any other moisturiser, so shame on it.
-
-
Bought a Lush cleanser once – think it was called Ultra Bland. It was supposed to be super gentle, but had the texture of cold fat, and impossible to remove once it went on. Horror.
-
Neutrogena cleansers… they all contain menthol which is supposed to give an ‘invigorating’ post-wash feeling. BUT menthol is actually a skin irritant so I finally know why my skin was red raw after cleansing with even the mildest one in the range that’s meant for sensitive skins. GRR!
La Mer moisturiser is another one which springs to mind. Heavy duty cream which costs $350 per 30ml or something ridiculous. To my delight, I once got a sample 5ml pot and but after a few uses I discovered it was breaking me out and I had huge gross pustules on my cheeks and chin. Ugh. Actually I’m thankful it didn’t work for me otherwise my bank balance would be looking that much worse nowadays!
MAC makeup = highly overrated and overpriced!
-
hehe… i was just about to mention La Mer moisturiser! But stupid me paid for the whole jar!!! It made me break out too – it was so rich it suffocated my skin. That was back in the early 90’s. Now, i always make sure i get a product sample. I’m such a sucker for trying new miracle creams – HOPE in a jar is all they are!
The other awful product that models and beauty editors swear they can’t live without is Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour cream. Just vaseline (petroleum?) in a tube!! yuk.
-
Yes, but again babes, the way hollywood raved about La Mer one would have thought it was distilled from the Fountain of Youth.
I don’t even know what exactly it’s made of…for some reason I thought it had something to do with the exotic coco de mer found in the seychelles, but no, the butt shaped fruit has no relation to the creme at all.
-
“butt shaped fruit” lol! too much!
WTF is La Mer made of then.
I think the only way to find out what a star is actually using is to go to their house and peek.
They get paid to endorse products publicly and probably to tote around in their purse.
We’d probably all be quite shocked.-
Yes, because you could probably find the miracle “cream” in syringes lined ever so neatly in their fridge… hee hee
-
creme de la mer…de?
-
de botox baby!
-
-
-
8 hour cream is nearly PURE lanolin… the fat from sheeps back/wool.
It is a known comedogenic (gives you blackheads) and can be highly toxic because of all of the sprays they use on the sheep. when face creams became popular marketed items they nearly all were lanolin based fastr forward 50 years and lots of skin problems later and you will find some products that are happy to hype the claim “lanolin free”.
It would be safer to use Vaseline in my opinion.
-
-
Some L’Oreal HIP and Jane eyeshadow/pencil products are very similar to MAC. Saves $ and can experiment.
-
Oh, I’m kind of happy to hear that about La Mer. I always hate when there’s some miracle product I could never possibly afford but that I’m convinced would alter any issue dramatically.
-
-
If anyone can recommend a good face cleanser w/o harsh chemicals for blemished skin due to hot, humid weather please let me know!
I use Cetaphil when my skin was normal and healthy. Now, it’s angry and inflamed!
I’ve had no luck with ProActive- I think it is too harsh stripped my skin dry then aggravated the situation.-
cleanse your face with natural yoghurt and rinse with warm water followed by cold water
-
thank you!
-
And make a salt-scrub at home! They’re so expensive to buy in a jar.
I like to mix a bit of salt and sugar with honey and a squirt of lemon juice. I pop in a tiny bit of cooking oil to make the honey less sticky. You can also whack your spent coffee grounds in there too if you feel the need. Rub it on and wash it off! Nice.
Use less salt and lemon juice if you have skin that very stings easily, and instead use more sugar and honey.
-
perfect potion geranium face wash. gentle, got good antibacterial herb stuff in it.
-
I use perfect potion too. Gorgeous stuff with beautiful essential oil fragrances. Very safe for me as I’m very sensitive to cosmetics, including dermalogica which stung my eyes to the bejeesus.
-
-
sounds good! thanks!
-
don’t use the foaming cleansers, or harsh scrubs, they will dry out and aggravate your skin further. you need to go go very gentle. give it a couple of weeks. Chesire cap’s idea of yoghurt etc is good. Is your skin inflamed because it is very sensitive, or because it is oily and clogged? i sometimes just use straight olive oil as a cleanser, or sorbolene cream – rub it on thicker than moisturiser, then rinse off gently. use a gentle moisturiser with anti congestant ingredients (dr hauschka or ella bache i think are good but everyone’s different)…
sometimes our diet has a huge effect on our skin, if you’re overdoing the caffeine, smokes and /or alcohol , cut back or quit now, and start drinking twice as much water as we normally do (sorry if you’re already a health nut). also i’ve noticed not enough protein can affect skin.
-
-
-
-
i’ve got fair and sensitive skin and very fussy about my cleansers. I’ve been using REN – Rosa Centifolia Facial Wash just over a year now. It’s a little bit expensive but 150ml lasts. It doesn’t dry out my skin like most “gentle” cleansers and i love that it’s sulphate-free and contains all natural ingredients like Rosa Damascena Flower Oil. Smells divine!
-
Scorpion tongue, I have super oily skin which on the one hand, helps me look younger but also is a bugger for blemishes. I really really LOVE Hauschka’s line for troubled, oily, impure skin.. they suggest a cleansing cream, followed by a clarifying toner and a normalizing day oil.
It seems counter intuitive to add oil to an oily face, but its a homeopathic and alchemical brand that treats like with like… you need not invest in the whole shebang either as they offer travel kits by skin type for about $25 USD. You can see how it feels for you….
I noticed after use that my pores have shrunk, I don’t have as many blackheads etc. Plus I love how they use press and roll i.e. no harsh rubbing on your face. I have so far, turned half of West Hollywood on to it and I’m sure the peeps at Kiehl’s probably hate me for it. hee hee
-
I have heard excellent things about Hauschka. i will invest in the travel kit and see if it helps.
thanks everyone for the help.-
Here is free tip for blemishes:
using a beauty bar, preferably, rather than soap, put a dessertspoon of white sugar into soaped up left hand and then rub hands together to form paste and give face gentle scrub and wash at same time. It is gentle enough to use on actual pimples and will clear up spotty skin if used daily for a few days or a week. Gives very clear tone. Rinse about fifteen times with cold water.-
thx I will try it!

I sometimes switch to Khiel’s Rare Earth cleanser (and generally stick to Cetaphil otherwise, too). I just went through a bad spell of what it sounds like you’re dealing with and here’s what seemed to help: Aztec Clay comes powdered from Whole Foods you mix it with water (and I added some drops of Imortelle oil) and use as a mask, it’s really, really the best. Also at night instead of moisturizer I’ve been using Almond oil, vitamin E oil, and imortelle oil mixed together (about 3 to 1 almond to E and five or six drops of imortelle in a little jar).
-
The clay masque sounds nice- i will try.
I agree on the almond oil plus vitamin E vs moisturizer.
-
-
philou about face is very good – brilliant in fact. i used to use jurlique but this one is so much better.
lip balm to love = lucas Paw Paw ointment. love the red tube!
-
I never go anywhere without my paw paw ointment
-
it’s good for everything!
I have a tub at home and a tube in my bag.
-
-
Kosmea products are really good scorpiontongue.
made in South Australia, female owned comp, all include rose hip oil, no SLS and all organic essential oils.
I have pretty much only used these products on my skin for about 3 years, can’t go back now. they are mid priced but cheaper than jurlique.
I just hve the cleanser and day cream – nothing else but it works a treat. their sun cream is really good too but a bit expensive.
-
-
thank you, scorp robot!
-
Hate: anything by the Body Shop, especially flavoured with that overpowering vanilla shit which gives me an instant headache and is nothing like real vanilla. Hate most sunblocks, being an almost redhead I’ve tried most of ‘em – esp. hate nutrogena’s claim to be gentle on skin – I actually had to wash their sunblock off after my whole face started stinging 3 seconds after application – was red and irritated for days, hate Lush the shop but actually love some of their products, just find the shop smelling overwhelming and like the perfume section of DJs. Oh, and hate most commercial perfumes.
Love: Clarins, spec. their sunblocks – kids, they WORK, and they are gentle and now they do an amazing mineral block which doesn’t contain all those chemicals and it all WORKS(just as a demo – I live in Middle East, ran out of clarins 40+ one day, applied what i had to upper body and Nivea 50+ to legs. Guess which part of me didn’t burn at ALL?)
Love also Chanel red lipsticks, Napoleon Perdis eyeshadows (agree with MAC comments above – go Napoleon), Dr Bronner’s Magic pure castile soap with peppermint oil, the cleansing creams by Dr Hauscka, olive oil as a mosituriser , and several Hermes perfumes- the only commercial brand I’ve found that doesn’t instantly give me a headache.-
i had a really bad reaction to clarins – my face broke out in a horrible rash – right before a formal event I had to attend! NIGTHMARE.
i have a chanel red lipstick that I adore – it’s the only one i wear (although rarely), and yes napoleon eyeshadows are brilliant.
nutrogena make a very good moistuerizer too and the best hand cream and it’s only $8 or something..
-
Agreed re Body Shop, seabird. All their products smell like glitterpens, scented wrapping paper & bubblegum.
-
smells like tween spirit
-
Nice one LL!

The biggest load of constantly over-rated crap is Clarins beauty Flash. People put that on and are radiant and go out in it? It’s just peely gooey sticky crap on me, even after it’s tissued off.
Plus having eternal bags, or dark circles as it’s officially known, I have tried every circle concealer ever hyped in Allure magazine and I can tell you that the more expensive ones that land up on the Best of Beauty porducts list year after year make me look like I’m just hopping off a slab in the morgue, and really pasty too. Forget (and save your $) Laura Mercier concealer for eyes or face (yes i bought both in a fit of old girl desperation) and just use a covergirl stick or whatever, a tenth of the price. If you want to look like a reverse raccoon shell out fifty plus bucks for the super-pasty Lancome concealer Effacernes Longue Tenue – yes, you will look pasty and horrible and draw attention to your sad undereye area for longer than you would ever wish.
That YSL touch eclat smells odd if you don’t rinse the brush thing out, but it does help I think more than any of the many many concealers I’ve tried.
-
virgo nightfairy have found an Estee Lauder liquid concealer that is fab for dark circles and other nasties. You can blend it with your makeup and it comes in different shades. Only one i’ve ever found that really works. Think it’s called Disappearing Smoothing Cream Concealer (writing’s rubbed off tube).
I’m not much of a Clarins fan either apart from their eye gel. Too rich for me, makes me break out.
-
Thank you! This sounds good. Circles not going anywhere, and make me look ten years older.
While ranting, Laura Mercier helpfully suggest put their magic white powder over top of inadequate greasy cream concealer for undereyes – this good if nineteen year old model, but really bad on any lines.
-
the old theatre trick is to use haeorrhoid cream on bags under the eyes. I works but you have to use it about half an hour before you use foundation.
-
-
-
Ooh! I recently found the best eye cream for bags and circles, it truly works. It’s from SIRCUIT and is called White Out. I don;t know how it works but I swear I noticed a difference right away and then after a couple weeks I realized that the circles are pretty much gone and except when I’m tired or have been working too hard (and squinting at the computer) the bags seem much better, too. It’s kind of expensive but you can buy a sample first.
-
Hmm. Again, i have to beg to differ! Clarins Beauty Flash balm is fantastic, when i am at my absolute worst (flakey skin due to bad diet and dehydration) the only way I can get make-up to go on smoothly. I also love the smell. It apparently contains silicone. I love every Clarins product. Sigh. Must be my virgo moon loves all the products on my bathroom shelf to match.
-
Me too. I just LURVE Clarins products. I wait til they have their sales at Myers and DJ’s (when you get the l’il bag of sample sizes of stuff). Then I buy their cream cleansers and eye creams and get the bag of goodies. But I do think that Clarins Beauty Flash isn’t really all its cracked up to be.
But then again, I feel the same about YSL’s Touche Eclat. Paid a king’s ransom for two duty free. OK, so its good, but it’s, not THAT good.
I really like to way Clarins is mildly scented. Their gentle foaming facewash is great for zits. My eldest is stating to get an oily T-zone and I’ve put her onto it. (What was I thinking?? I’ll have to pay for it til she becomes indep) But I know that it WILL clean her oily skin…. unlike Neutragena which will just strip her skin like Exit Mould.
Clarins hand-cream is to die for. A little luxury is a wonderful thing
-
-
-
So good to know its not just me re: BodyShop smells!!! There I was thinking I was the scurge of Western Civilisation and a shirker of my humanitarian / enviornmental responsibilities by not buying their crap…. now I just donate the money I’ve saved to the Red Cross or Planet Ark
. -
What gets rid of cystic acne (besides medication)? I still get it on my neck, and I’m almost at retiring age. I live in a very humid environment and have to wear sunblock and it’s getting worse. Suggestions?
-
TCM and acupuncture to unclog blockages??

hey seabird, i used to get bad break outs, long beyond teenage years, and the thing that finally got rid of them was milk thistle supplements. liver congestion/toxicity is a major player in slightly out of whack hormones that cause the kind of cystic spots you are talking about. yeah, what you put on your skin doesnt always help but its not the cause (imo, and only from my experience). anyway, anything herbal that deals with liver- so milk thistle, dandelion etc- could be a huge help.

Best ever: Shiseido foaming cleanser (I have really dry skin it is the only ‘foaming’ thing I can use that actually moisturises but makes skin feel clean)
Worst ever: Any Jurlique moisturiser. They SEPARATE into batches of oil, and when you apply them they just sit like a top soil of grease on your skin. I don’t care if they’re Australian and also natural. They are crap. Aveda much better.
ALSO you can pretty much give yourself dandruff by using Pantene or cheapo shampoo. They contain detergent. Sadly the expensive natural shampoos are really really good (alchemy, Aveda etc).
Seabird would love to recommend something but i don’t know…maybe some kind of chamomile spritz (calms humid / inflamed skin…)? You could ask a naturopath? -
For dry or fragile skins, just use Hydroderm or other sorbolene cream as a cleanser. Cheap, functional and doesn’t make your face fall off.
-
I have been using Natrasorb, a veggie oil-based sorbolene as body lotion. Works a treat!

Just recalled some more totally fuqedup stuff! Got a “free” sample of Prevage when I bought some magazine. It smelt really awful but am ever hopeful. A few days of use day and night and my face came out in enormous hives. I mean giant, and massed close together over whole face. Scary.
-
Oh. I loved that prevage! You must be sensitive i guess? I have a friend who can’t use any Aesop products at all they give her rashes, which i was surprised to hear as they are ‘natural’ and organic etc.

Jurlique. Ughh. Used to be an ethical company. Then sold out. I’ve no probs with smaller companies selling out to bigger ones, but when a company bases itself on being ethical, and then sells out to an unethical company – goodbye! Now I can’t remember what company bought Jurlique. was it Revlon? Something owned by the Packer family. Something owned by Sara Lee evil company?
Other excellent stuff. Add real rose essential oil to pure sesame oil as a body lotion – it does absorb and your skin loves it. Salt and olive oil together make a great body scrub, or for dealing with gardeners hands. And my favourite thing – rosewater, from Middle eastern shops, use it as a spritzer in a spray bottle for a toner, or for when it’s hot. if you have oily skin like me, use this as a moisturiser, it does calm skin down.
I’ve had to resort to expensive commerical face creams here because of the lack of alternatives and also the incredible humidity which deteriorates my usual supply of natural goop even in the fridge. But I still think Clarins is the best sunblock I’ve come across. -
I use pure coconut oil with a few drops of rose oil as body lotion. It does go hard in cold weather but a few secs in hot water and it liquifies and it suits my skin.

I love waxing and the number of crappy waxing products I have tried over the years makes me cringe. After the disappointments of strip and liquid wax brands like Nair, Julienne and others, I now only use Andrea Brazillian Wax for everything. It is fantastic for your sensual area, eye brows etc. The little vials of oil that you apply before you wax ensure even sensitive skin is protected.

LA MER is made from seaweed percolated to MUSIC!
Gathered some seaweed from the beach, played music to it and nothing happened.
Put it on my plants & they withered a bit from the salt.
Used the whole Jurlique range in the 90’s. Overpriced & yes, unethical as their ex owners.
Estee Launder bought La Mer, not sure who got Jurlique, but someone like you mentioned above.
L’Oreal Age RePerfect was big dissapointment with no mileage, lasted 4 weeks!
Two days at the beach every 4 weeks in my best skin care. Sand’s a great exfloliater & 10 mins
of face in sun & clean ocean air does it for me.-
Pegasus – tried age reperfect – agree with you – I think it must be formulated for very ancient ladies’ bottoms, not faces. However, the age perfect range surprisingly nice on my skin, but the night one is especially not long-lasting – not like a tub of really expensive stuff which lasts six months, so false economy, I see! And, having no real respect for it, I just slap it on.

Pegausus, that is so true about the beach. There is something a little bit magical about salt water.
Worst: any kind of goopy waxy primer that contains silicon makes me break out; and dermalogica products just don’t do it for me.
Best: The microfibre mascara mentioned above, bourjois “10 hour sleep effect” foundation – light, just the right amount of glow and doesn’t feel all noxious and pore blocking, using cetaphil and bi-carb as a gentle facial scrub – and have had great results from trial ultraceuticals packs. I’d love to be a cetaphil and rosehip oil gal, but its just not enough. And as an Aqua, I love whizz bang hi-tech scientific ingredients in my skin care!

Will try the bi-carb and cetaphil mix Champers Bearing Aqua, thanks, bicarb is so versatile. Ultraceuticals works, have been using it for years. Was initially recommended to me by eternally youthful Gemini acquaintence from the gym. She is 5 years older than I, had four children whilst working as a GP (for 20 years) and is married to a busy psychiatrist. Her kids all in their late teens, early 20’s now and she’s now a breast cancer researcher, clever chick. Anyway she put me onto it and best ever skin product. I’m combo skin prone to breakouts from rich products, humidity etc. My Toro sis is dry dry skin prone to peeling in winter and she swims a lot. She a long time smoker until preggers with first-born late 1998. Since she started it a few years ago, amazing change in her skin. My youngest Leo sis thought she’d had botox but she hasn’t. They have something for everyone. Shame I can’t use their best stuff – Ultra C cream – too rich for me but works miracles on dryer skins. And they often sell travel kits too so you can trial them.

Its only sold in salons and selected DJs stores (in Qld anyway).
