“If one is a greyhound, why try to look like a pekingese,” enquired the acerbic Virgoan Edith Sitwell – a biography of her was called A Unicorn Among Lions and there are natural echoes of The Ugly Duckling.
But the interesting astro idea is that your Rising and/or Ascendent sign really IS your best look. If you do not know your Rising/Ascendent sign, you can figure it out via Astrodienst or via an astrologer. Once you have it, read that along with your Sun sign in any scope…See how it feels…
Do you embody your Rising Sign astrologically? It makes fashion/image a LOT easier once you accept it and – for astro-fiends only, look at the house placement of your ruling planet (ruler of the ascendent) for the BASE energy of your Look…I swear it makes AMAZING sense upon pondering. You can also have fun looking to fashion/image choices at 7 year intervals – 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 etc – as these are all strong Saturn-Uranian flashpoints.
And of course if you have any BIG outer planet (Uranus, Pluto, Neptune) sitting on our Ascendent (such transits take at least 18 months) then will perform a spectacular makeover, ready or NOT. Ascendent astro WORKS. If you need to buy new clothes, wait until Venus is hovering nearby your Asc. Anyway, I am interested in the query – does your look embody your rising sign?
Aries Rising would need bold, primary colours – especially red. Taurus old world luxe & texture v.important. Gemini – trend fiend. Kataka would SO slink around in vintage. Leo, like a Versace look & blinged up with golden aura. Virgo; precise, layered and with some thought behind it. Libra; classic bombshell. Scorpio; black leather, Sagg; boho & gear from their travels. Cap; austere, power. Aqua; prob the same thing ALL the time but it works? Pisces; crystally yoga wear & aura enhancing hues…

I am Kataka rising, & do look much better in ’50s style clothing – sets off my waist/hip ratio nicely, works the cleavage etc. I can do jeans & boots quite happily though – have not mastered the ’50s obsessive grooming, even in my 4th decade
-
soo true —-Picses rising! im all for the aura wear!!!! — is anyone else going to the MBS festival in melbourne on June 5-8 ???? i am i cant wait!!!!
-
would hippy clothing fit into picses rising??
cause like its like tie dyes as far as the eye can see in my wardrobe — I LOVE TIE DYES LOL
-
-
I am not sure if I have this right – but i am a taurus with a taurus rising – but then also need to look at the placement of venus? which is in aries (this also makes me a morning star!)
now my look is quite eclectic – definitely love luxurious fabric and classic cuts – here in new zealand we have gorgeous winter clothes – i love possum, silk merino mix……all natural fibres are delicious and rich colours, nothing muted but bold and earthy – amber, burgundy, lapis lazuli blue…..actually colour is really important …perhaps that is the aries influence on my venus? also wear a lot of chunky jewelery, pashmina scarves, embroidered jackets from India (i usually spend a couple of months in india each year) perhaps an expression of my saggi moon?
-
i reckon moon has a lot to do with it too – i love my Power-wear (cap moon) as much as i love beach schlep-wear and crazed-cosmic-theatre-escapee look

Virgo rising.
Noooooooo. I’m a scruff. Well, OK, when I have to scrub up I do go for layers in carefully co-ordinated/complimentary colours. Blue and black together a complete no no, also white socks. And no more than 3 shades of the same colour. Jewel necks because they suit me best. Trouser legs have to reach my shoes – not half mast. White or cream top dillemmas have made me late for meetings. Oh, rather virgoan then …. -
Euck, no!
-
also a virgo rising.
work from home so get to wear the same jeans, jumpers and ugg boots for days (so defn not embodying any gemini trendiness) – but definitely have a layered complementary colour thing going on – particularly black and blue. I’m quite fond of lots of black with shoes, layered singlet, earrings and scarf in shades of blue, red, or purple.
I have a pisces moon and pisces descendant – expressing my water craving through all that blue perhaps?
-
-
I’m a Pisces with Leo rising but with lots of Pisces in my planets, (Venus, Mars, Jupiter and True Node). Even though I speak Italian, I am not into bling, but have always had heaps of hair, and like only quality shoes, fine fabrics and fine knits. I wear Max Mara suits when I have to and jeans and jackets. I am typically Pisces in an artistic sense as I draw and make ornamental medieval potagers, but I am often mistaken by those evolved enough to know, as a Virgo. I love green in all her graces.
-
Fish rising with Saturn conj asc. Neptune in Scorp in 9th and Jupiter in Taurus in 3rd. Black, black, navy, deep shades of grey, denim, natural fabrics next to my skin. Like the occasional splash of red but mostly simple understated black streamlined quality. Minimal silver earrings, one diamond ring and quality watch. In summer can do all white. Shoes have to be comfortable.
-
and never wear beige, brown or yellow.
-
amen to that!!!
-
Beige, brown & yellow are horrors.
-
-
Leo rising…
I do have some majorly blonde curly hair, but don’t really wear any jewellery- i don’t even have my ears pierced.Did receive compliment recently that I always am dressed in very complete outfits, like a definite style of clothes. I think I am rather closer to my Virgoan sun at heart, never too many colours at once or overwhelming prints.
But now I think about it, I do always ‘dress’, which is rather Leonine, and rather Venusian (which is 1 degree from my asc). Even if its casual, its definitely a casual ‘outfit’.
-
My Aries rising manifests itself in lots of red shoes (at least 10 pairs covering the range from sneakers, sandals, Campers, dizzying stilettos and work shoes, including plenty of red patent leather) and quite a few big red accessories, particularly necklaces.
I’m notorious for the red shoe thing. My (male) secretary came dashing into my office a couple of weeks ago to alert me when the Myer windows began a display of different shoe designers’ interpretations of Dorothy’s ruby slippers.

Classic bombshell Libra rising?
1. Certainly a look I could cultivate. Oui.
2. What does that look like exactly? Thought appreciated.-
virgo cat when I think classic bombshell, I think of a lot of those 50’s stars, Audrey Hepburn was the classy version, Marilyn Monroe, more well just more…and Sophia Loren had an earthier appeal, but always looked gorgeous. Maybe at a stretch Katherine Hepburn was a bombshell too, just an intellectually witty one with lashings of style.
-
my Cap sister had Libra rising and dressed in a floaty fem pastels more into dresses and skirts than pants. She didn’t look herself in jeans but wore them outdoorsy. She would wear tailored jackets but with dresses never matching pants or skirts and in pale colours. If she wore pants they were loose, wide legged and waisted with girly tops, floaty sleeves, big collars…

Virgo Sun- Scorpio Rising=Black Leather- my favorite!
-
Love this one Mystic! I was only pondering over the weekend what impact our rising signs have on us??
Am Libra Rising. In my early 20s I think my aqua Sun influened my fashion style. Relaxed, kooky, hippy and slighty unique though not too OTT.
But now, in my early thirties am just realising that yes, it is the more classic styles – with a little twist, that suit me best!
Grey, black black and black, white…one of my fave colours is slate blue/grey. Some days I still splash a bit of watermelon in there to mix it up.
The label CUE is good would suit is Libra risings, no?
So yeah? As Virgo Cat asked, what does a classic bombshell look like?
x-
Slate blue/grey is my fav colour too aquaCAT, and is the colour of my car which I love – very Pluto in Cap, as is all the black and shades of grey.
-
-
I have Taurus rising and think that the comment about texture and old world luxe is spot on. I can remember being entranced with my great aunt’s linen blouses from the 40’s as a preteen. For the most part I’m comfortable in classic lines …they just suit my shape. I wear scarves a lot.
I do tend to think of dressing as a series of dress ups though…so the Leo mentality is still lurking about…I tend to wear minimal makeup and jewellery though.
-
Oh, I love this exercise.
Virgo rising in first house / Saturn in First House. I ALWAYS dress to a concept and I do thoroughly thought out ’seasons’ of style. Usually these seasons relate to a particular political / zeitgeist commentary I am trying to make at the time. I’m currently in ‘Flowy and Showy’ for autumn, it’s tight fitting, muscle hugging, with drapey things overlaid… Before that was ‘Modern Medieval’, before that was ‘Flower Cowboy’ and before that was ‘Dark Mystic’ and before that ‘Urban Pirate’ – but that was more to do with having to wear an eye-patch for 2 months (medical reasons) and having to make the best of it with my fashion choices.-
ps – just noticed my tautology of ‘virgo rising’ and ‘in first house’. Virgo rising finds that embarrassing.
-
don’t be embarrassed, I say rising planets as compared to first house planets not in rising sign.
-
-
-
The Double Bull ex once commented that whilst I rarely wear anything that’s currently in fashion, whatever outfits I put together end up looking fashionable but with an interesting twist. Maybe that’s cause of Gem Asc natally trining Uranus in Libra? But yep I definitely vibe Gemini on first impression and have a lot of Gem traits such as conceptual thinking, brainstorming maniac, love wordplay, witty repartee and writing. I don’t look good or feel comfortable in anything too vintage or structured – seem to need a vaguely flowing, layered look.
-
Just googled for us Virgo Cat (and any other Libra risings) and most obvious classic bombshell was Marilyn Monroe.
I like the modern -day version in Scarlett Johansenn, she’s a foxy bombshell if there ever was one, manages to look sexy in cut off shorts and sandals. -
Oh and I know this is a tad off topic – but do you guys reckon a guy goes more for the Rising/Moon and maybe Mars of a woman than her actual sun? I’ve found that to be quite prominent.
-
prowln, I think it depends on the blokes own astro. From my experience some have resonated to my sagg stuff and love to discuss all topics and explore the convoluted ramblings of my mind while others like my Cap side and treat me like a lady. Alpha Tauri is the first to seem to respond to all. My neptune stuff freaks some blokes.
-
hehe chesh I know the feeling … I asked because I find men often are drawn to my Airy/Fire personna and then discover that I really am more Cancerian (particularly in relationships due to Venus there too) and wonder where the other chick went … though that being said I’ve never quite been the demure babymaking, stuffer of money under my pillow that Linda Goodman used to crap on about.
It’s great that Alpha Tauri responds to your multifaceted self though – that’s awesome and really the best kind of relationship in my opinion. It’s horrible to be boxed and or subtle pressure exerted not to express all aspects of oneself.

-
Times like this I feel a little gyped that my sun and ascendant are the same…
-
OMG!! crystally yoga wear and aura enhancing hues!! i need time to process this very disturbing info ):
-
don’t worry too much – just channel the pisces ultra-future / multiverse vibe and that way you can pick up whatever style you like

Libra sun with Virgo rising
Used to be uber-hippie, but now try to avoid all that, it’s not a good look as the years advance.
Still, I do like my quirky op-shop finds. I’ve a becoming-extensive collection of 70s cardigans – great shapes, great colours, often pure wool and picked up at ridiculous prices mostly under $20.
As for colours it’s black and grey and some beige – great for layering with black – and lots of red, purple, white and hot-pink tops – solid colours you understand, splashy patterns set my teeth on edge – worn with the aforementioned cardies in the winter, and scarves and pashminas.
Not really into jewellry, but admire other people’s.
Always three-quarter sleves at work to hide the bingo-wing-effect.
Always knit tops – with my shape woven fabrics with buttons up the front just do not work.
Shoes are the making of this particular woman – yay for multiple pairs of red shoes.
I wish I could bring myself to lash out on a Max Mara twinset – sigh -
“Gemini rising – trend fiend”
Nup, that’s not me at all… no interest in fashion whatsoever.
Being a Saggi, I live in casual clothes whenever possible, including wearing jeans to the office (about a quarter of the staff do) most days.
Loathe skirts and dresses and have maybe two in my massive wardrobe of jeans and t-shirts!
-
Scorp with Scorp Rising… am not into black leather at all. But maybe old Martian reference to all red hues, my favourite colours? I find black leather too overtly “sexy” (in a not so sexy, slightly vulgar way).
Btw, my Pisces/Virgo Rising sister seems to go more in the Leo direction… -
PS: I looove cocktail and evening dresses (silk, organza, though no lace) more than anything else. Unfortunately can’t walk around like that all day!
-
that still is the femme fatale Scorpio Rising. Do you like like smoky eyeliner? Red lipstick?
-
Smoky eyes, yes! Red lipstick doesn’t suit me, I go for a bit more pinkish.
Ah, yes, I can see that the idea of a femme fatale in an evening gown suits me much better than the biker chick chic.-
sounds sexy. The femme fatale in a black dress. Nice- I love both looks.

I have a scorp rising and have recently bought a leather jacket (hooded), which I kinda love. Lovign the greaser look/biket girl that is coming back in… meant for girls that look like guys, and i don’t…
I dig structured clothing (yet still comfy… good quailty tailored stuff… digging on the military styled jackets. Like bright, bright and deep colors… with a healthy smattering of black (but and getting more into browns).
I looooooove the classic cocktail dress cuts. 1950’s all the way. Big bust and hips, with tiny waist helps.
Jeans, fancy street sneakers (tigers) and good cuts on t-shirt (a little 1950’s rocker if I can).
I sound more scorp by the second, really…-
This is great!
Taurus rising, Scorpio sun.I have lots of black leather jackets – all kinda structured or fashion-y rather than “sexy”. Used to wear red as well but going off it at the moment.
Going for a more androgynous look – (guess I’m one of those girls that look like guys, I’ll swap you) black, silver, grey, lots of leather, chrome, fairly fitted and not fussy or uncomfortable. Super-high platform heels or futuristic-style trainers, or goth boots, but carefully selected so that I can run in all of them.
Doing a bit of very dark purple instead of red.
I don’t like vintage on me – I look better dressing like the (male) lead singer of some band than like a girl. Or a high-fashion version of that, anyway.
Don’t like lace or frills of any sort. Or flowery dresses. Piscean ex despaired of me.
Smoky or defined eyeliner (cats-eye) is great. Red lipstick is a pain (as is purple or indeed black.) I do like a fairly streamlined look – I want everything to work and look right, and not be fiddly and constricting, or the makeup to smudge etc during the day. Controlling Scorpio much? Heh.
I tend to like something and then it comes into fashion a few months later. Bit annoying. I’m probably looking at early trend websites or something & absorbing it.
I am having trouble seeing where the Taurus ascendant bit comes in. Probably more in the interior decoration, although that’s fairly minimalist, too. Texture and fabric and feel is important to me, so maybe that’s it. But not old world luxe – more minimalist goth luxe.
Clearly some major virgo influence there – I grew up with one in the biz and he was my big fashion influence … “precise, layered and with some thought behind it” pretty much describes it + Scorpio black leather & for some reason the capricorn austere power thing too although there’s no capricorn in my chart. Lots of Scorpio though – sun + moon + 6th + 7th. (Bummer to live with, especially once a month.Hehe)
I would never touch pastels, beige, yellow – strong colours suit my skin colour best!
-
I am mildly coverting your style:)
-
go for it … makes getting dressed simpler (although I need a torch to select clothes out of the wardrobe in the morning
)

Gemini with Leo rising. I’ve been told I have a very specific style: sort of riot grrl tomboy flowery mash-up. I am not trendy. I like to buy ‘pieces’, like a tartan jacket, & slowly build an outfit that way. My hair is epic – whether short or long, it changes colour about every three months (i’ve had everything except natural-looking blonde). I can pull off gold/silver in moderation.
I’ve recently decided to make more of an effort with my appearance because it affects my self-esteem so much – but I’m always in a Gemini rush!! So I will be wearing contact lenses & putting on makeup first thing in the morning for the next week to see how it goes.I’ve also been told that I look like a puma cub by someone who didn’t know I have Leo rising
-
PS I also love green & had green hair for five months, immediately after breaking up with someone – could this be my Psyche in Virgo speaking loudly through my hair that I wanted to meet someone new?
Hair is currently cherry red
-
-
Capricorn Sun, Sagg rising……. Love to wear bright tops with fishermen’s pants and explorer socks in sandals, and have never dyed my hair.
-
one more question for anyone who cares to shed light.. how does 12th house affect outward appearances / fashionista?
It’s the only place I have Leo and people ALWAYS pick me for Leo, partly because of the huge mane of hair and also for the, well, flash-fash style I have…?-
Maybe your birthtime is out and you have some late degree of Leo on the ascendant??
-
-
Would have to agree with the comment about black leather being more vulgar than sexy, although some can pull it off. I’ve never really embraced my scorp rising fashion wise. Always thought that black was a bit of a lazy option, though as I get older more and more little black dresses are working their way into my wardrobe. They have to be a bit spesh though.
I have a colour-of-the-mo obsession at any given time (Aries merc perhaps?) Right now I lust for deep ochrey mustard. Have even been tempted to dye my hair mustard but fear that it will end up looking like vomit. Sticking to my red Moon-in-Leo mane for now – I think its a winner and I never get bored of red. Also have had flings and protracted affairs with beige, brown, yellow, mauve, aquamarine etc that now when I look back at some of my choices I shudder. Aquamarine? What was I thinking? -
Digging the pic, Mystic. Still growing my hair so that one day I can walk through a wind tunnel and, voila! a voluptous red beehive will emerge like a newly formed 8th wonder. All hail the red beehive! I also wish that I had some of that pisces fashion chutzpah to pull off the silver Dr Who alien number. If I could I too would be strutting my stuff on late afternoon beaches – where else would I be?
-
Btw does anyone know what part of your chart deals with image/fashion fantasy?
-
-
Aries Rising – Rock on red, and block primaries. Currently enamoured with the purple and blue in EVERY shop window. So very royal I think….
I also have Merc in Sagg, which accounts for my cas wear, jeans, jackets, street runners (ahem – Tigers of COURSE!), all perfect for plane rides anywhere. Love the trekker look (ie Kathmandu, North face style stuff etc, no star trek), but rarely indulge as way too ’specific’ looking (or try hard in the wrong circumstances). I’d rather go nekked than wear thai fisher anything, but admire people who do, and who manage to look good. I also have a collection of whimsical earings, as they are the only jewelry I wear (bar a classic (virgo) aquamarine/white gold ring to celebrate my 24th birthday, and my stainless steel seiko watch) – thats about the only boho part of me….
I’m not sure where my reverence for a good suit comes from? I guess it too is my virgo coming out. Tailored shirts, pencil skirts, sharp pants, all rounded off with funky shoes.
Lots of scorp black as well in the wardrobe – more and more my black comes in statement pieces, like an amazing tailored jacket I found in Madrid, flamenco influences, deep cleavage, and fab with russian red lipstick.-
Oh, and if I do not have the right shoes for an outfit, it don’t get worn.
-
-
Scorpio sun, Leo rising…black leather jackets all the time, badass boots, lots of black and red…I think the only way my Leo rising manifests is that a) my hair is always huge bedhead and b) I give a crap about how I dress. Otherwise it’s Scorpio to the hilt.
-
This is so odd! EVERYTHING I’ve read about my rising sign makes no sense! I supposedly have a rising Virgo.. but I’m messy, not precise, I’m definitely not a perfectionist, I’m extremely loud, very artsy, very assertive, very confident, and I LOVE BEING TRENDY. What is up with that? Everything else always makes so much sense! And I’ve checked for a mistake so many times!
Maybe the lady in the hospital was spacing out when she wrote my birth chart…???
-
Taurus rising…I love earthy tones, and the clothing has to FEEL good…fit well, and the material not itchy, etc. Love juean, boots, leather belts, good jumpers, good coats…am much happier in winter clothing than summer.
Also I read somewhere where Taurus rising can have an ‘unhealthy obsession with cosmetics, skin care and anti-aging’. This is DEFINITELY me!!!

TIE DYES — PICSES ACCENDANT????
-
(I apologize for the lengthly post)
I’d actually like to think that my ascendant with my sun sign works helps shape what I like in fashion and beauty. The funny thing about this idea was that I also posted a topic like this in Sasstrology (that place is full of jokers these days), but was shot down by a few people who told me that Venus rules fashion. If that were the case (venus virgo), then all of my closet would be already filled with basics and professional wear. It would be boring and not practical (ironically. There is a time and place for certain types of clothes, you know?).Maybe it’s my Leo in mercury, but I feel a bit proud for having a sun in Cancer and my rising in libra. I like the idea of old world elegance and femininity; I have a love for classic pieces, cuts, and appliqués, (lace and embroidery for me!), and symmetry. It’s fine to recycle trends from time to time, but lately, it seems sooo overdone in runway and mainstream fashion that it’s not even funny. Personally, I’m behind on trends even though I’m constantly on the look out. I’ve stuck to my tried and true, dark blue boot-cut denim, while skinnies are taking over.
On the downside, I am a bit obsessive with beauty care items. x_x
I think that a libra designer (and stylist) tends to balance out the past and the present for future works, and so it might be fair to say that libran clothing (and techniques) keeps oldies that work, but makes it new without losing that sense of elegance and beauty. Unlike Taurus, whom normally likes to stick with earthy tones, I think that Libra (as a Cardinal sign) appreciates all of the colors of the rainbow (….well, maybe not the neons) for what they are and what they can do to the wearer (bad or good – they’d know).
Maybe libra ascendants made things like luxury bags.
—-
I just went through several of my favorite designers’ natal charts, and I realized that none of them had libra as their ascendant (Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Christian Lacroix, Mary Quant, and a few others), but they certainly were innovative for their time.
