D.I.Y. Astro – The Midheaven

mountainclimbing1970

This is not a course in astrology but i get loads of questions about this sort of thing so maybe a bit of info will be useful?  You can get a chart off Astrodienst & please just get the vanilla version. I got an e-mail from someone semi-hysterical the other day. She’d worked up her chart & gone for every single extra asteroid, point and even hypothetical planets (Uranian astrology) and it was the first time she’d ever even seen her chart. The e-mail began something like  “HELP ME – I ALWAYS THOUGHT I WAS A LEO BUT I HAVE PRIAPUS, HADES, VERTEX, TWO PARTS OF FORTUNE AND 14674 + my PROGRESSED MOON ALL IN VIRGO…”

Anyway, the Midheaven is the cusp of the 10th house, aka the Brilliant Career sector. You can see it at more or less the top of any chart with the words MC.This is short for “medium coeli” aka middle of the sky aka Midheaven. If you have an exact birthtime, transits to the Midheaven manifest with total resonance for your vocational reality. The sign of the Midheaven and the planets in that 10th house signify your level of fame attained – if any, your public image, professional reputation and point toward your ideal career.

So, for fun or furthering self-understanding, figure out the sign/any planets in the 10th and ponder the scenario. eg; Mars in Saggo/ Saggo Midheaven wouldn’t want to be indoors or beholden to anyone. This is someone who would go bonkers if trying to follow – say – the parental path into a profession. It just reeks of the wilderness, travelling around teaching martial arts, a politician, professional zealot, idealist, horse trainer, surfer, self-employed, wanderer…It is all, obviously, a bit more complicated than this but i.m.o. it is a good starting point. And cool to analyze. On a really shallow level, just consciously trying to ‘do’ your Midheaven sign when it comes to big career matters, seems to work really well.

Interesting – especially the transits to the Midheaven. Any thoughts on Venus retro almost conjunct my Midheaven (Aries, 0 degrees)?
I’ve been sending out pitches galore and working on my book but so far being met with a resounding emptiness of inbox.
Can’t even get a waitressing job! It’s actually funny.

Yes my immediate thought is that Pluto still well within range of squaring it so from now thru till sept when pluto goes direct – in fact give it till Xmas – you having to totally reinvent your entire career/image/goals. Let the old self die unto the new. Aries MC is brave though & a natural leader.

Can someone invent a time machine to transport me to the place where i am no longer living in a share house nor on draft 32 of the book?
I keep getting sent lipsticks yet have $18 in the bank. Maybe i will have to eat the lipstick?

fishgirl – have you tried applying for an arts council grant? Don’t know which state you live in but here in SA they are throwing money at peeps on draft 32 of The Manuscript.

save the lippy for going out to fab events when your book is a best seller and do some money feng shui/ witchery!

that’s what I’d call synchronicity :D YES it is what you MUST do!! and you’ll get the money! Be sure to apply for plenty – factor in all the expenses – maybe even including rent of a place of your own so you can have some quality writing time! In SA the Arts Council run info evenings so they tell you how to apply, what you can apply for and all that.

I’d love to know what others with Aries on the Midheaven – do. It’s a very impatient Midheaven to have.

hiya fishgirl. aries MC and venus in aries to boot here…

i’ll tell you what i do – one fulltime job but wish there was 3 of me so i could do everything…I have a long list of careers i still want, and some of the things i have to do to get them (including: international business, textiles designer, musician, outspoken campaigner for the cause of women everywhere and especialy debunking the crap myths that men love to use to dominate women. I want to work out a way to show women – everyone – that they don’t have to put up with crap and that the fundamental structure of society has been set up by people (mostly before our time) to serve their own needs, , so we must question everything. (I have friends who work in womens shelters, i don’t know if i could do that – i’d want to go and give the abusers a taste of their own medicine)

I want to be on TV and go head to head with whatever latest leader is supporting some shite sharia law, or for that matter anything in the western world too that’s rubbish. campaigning. taking things down fom the inside armed only with the cold hard facts. (idealista…)
i want to mix up my love of networking and putting people together (not matchmaking – too sticky) with creative skills, desire to work globally and free women from socio-politico-econo-crap. not to mention protection of the environment from planet rapists.

see , got me going there…! I have lilith conjunct Jupiter in the 11th and mars in aqua in 8th, maybe that’s the part of me that wants to demolish those who get a kick out of wielding power unethically, for their own gain

How funny – I’m a feminist too but in a more subversive way. We also share mars in Aqua in the 8th. i don’t know what that means other than i can’t stand rules/restrictions and nothing makes my blood boil quicker than people who cannot think outside the square.

hmmm. well at the moment i’m not a feminist crusader, just doing some job in an office (can you hear the cogs grinding…squeek..visualise laminate desk…lovely…), but it’s one of the things i encounter in the wider world that i want to deal with more in my ‘next’ role (somehow). And yes…rules…well…i live by them at work at the moment and being my own boss looks more and more appealing..every second! I think it’s only the moon in cap or some other influence that keeps me sticking to the dayjob atm , plus wanting $$

I do like prowlncat’s idea of PM, but politix…that stuff’s hard, all those slippery personalities to wrangle, deals to be made…i need a wheeling-and-dealing sidekick for these things :)

nice work scorpbot. Maybe there’s enough of us to start our own political party… ! So, first we need a manifesto… we could put fishgirl’s writing skills to political ends :)

um, so, like since my candiacy for PM has been proposed and carried, does that mean i have to tap Kevin on the shoulder now? “er, ah, kevin. my electorate has given me a mandate to replace you as PM …” my mandarin isn’t so good though. might affect relations with China…

I could listen to Kevin speak mandarin all day. It’s so cute.

          2. unpredictable pisces’s avatar

indeed there are a few female contenders well ahead of me! besides in spite of my idealism and wanting to change things i don’t think i could hack the politics and personal sledging…too sensitive – i would use other means to achieve goals. i’m more of an ideas man… networks…use what’s there..etc

as for what fishgirl says – the abusers being the abused at one stage is a common story isn’t it…perhaps rather than mete out punishment blow for blow (still tempting) it’s more about having them truly realise what they are doing…pull the weed out by the roots ‘n’ stuff

        2. fishgirl’s avatar

so weird, i have mars in 8th too but don’t have any urge to give abusers a taste of their own. I think to be abusers they must somehow have been abused anyway…

          4. Leonine Librarian’s avatar

TA and other LL, I’ve also got Pisces at MH…and Saturn in the 10th. Also a nice little combo of Mars trine MH, Jupiter trine MH and Mercury MH too..

Some of the little pearls that resonate today are for Merc opp MH from Astrodienst…

‘You will look deep within yourself for answers to the questions that come up in life….Because you are in touch with your feelings, you can react to a situation according to your real needs, but only if you concentrate on the present and the future rather than the past.’

Mars trine MH, ‘ You have a strong sense of self, that is, you know who you are and what your rights are with regard to other people. You have considerable self-confidence and will fight for what you believe to be yours. On the other hand, you probably won’t try to dominate people. You do have a great deal of physical energy, however, especially in activities that you want to be involved in. Fortunately, with this aspect you won’t have much trouble finding a purpose in life.’

Jupiter trine MH. ‘ This aspect will be extremely useful, first by helping you find the right direction to take in your life and, second, by enabling you to make others feel positive about you and eager to help if you need it. You have a strong sense of social responsibility, a feeling that you should give your life over to a purpose that is useful to the world.’

This helps Saturn in the 10th feel a bit easier.

          5. taurean alchemist’s avatar

Leonine Librarian! That really is quite synchronicitous isn’t it?

          6. Leonine Librarian’s avatar

Yes TA it is very. I could really relate to your comment about it taking forever to work out what you thought you were meant to be doing…and consequent relief when shifting focus to present tense.

I’m finding that if I can link what I am doing to my core values; the stuff that I do just because it fuels me on a heart level, and or societal level it’s falling into place now, and gives me a wider playing field to let opportunities to connect and weave into a fulfilling purposeful life.

Reading the stuff about my midheaven gives me more reassurance that I’m track. Even the position of Saturn in the 10th makes sense…

I like the sound of your mamamagic site too. Will visit for sure.

Amen to that Sister! And I say this hand on heart having been preceded by a Lovely Libran sister who knew ABSOLUTELY what she wanted to do (banking..zzz) and the Grifter Cap (anything in sales where she’d be out of the house and $$$) whereas I applied to three different universities under three different courses, much to my father’s dismay who found it slightly schizoid. One was for med school & fine arts (in the same uni), the other was for philosophy and the last one was for advertising.

So it was truly hard being the last little fish out of the pond trying to find my way, but like TA points out, I go where my river goes.

I once read that Icelandic culture actually allows for multiple careers in one lifetime vs the usual solid one or two most believe are standard, and having a variety would make more sense to me, because I think that means one is engaged in life. And a vocation isn’t necessarily just about being devoted to one thing but perhaps to a theme of interest that resonates through out and can manifest in different occupations.

I used to be in sales, and retreated back to the cool and darkened hallways of administration, yet..I am finding myself once more being thrown into a communicating/presenting role almost always unavoidably. My recent absence from this divine blog has been caused by seminar madness, never in my life did I imagine myself giving one. But there you go…

My midheaven incidentally is in Gemini, I also have Mercury in Gemini in the 10th house as well as both the Sun and Mars in Cancer and in the 10th! Not quite sure what the last bit means… but it feels like I’ll be doing a lot of publicizing of some sort… Town cryer perhaps?

          9. taurean alchemist’s avatar

            yay Angel’s back!

funny, I’ve always had an idea you had Gemini Rising… which I suppose depending on how far away from the equator you live, would give you Pisces MC.

When/how did you find out your birth time??

hmm. just had thoughts about my Pisces sister who has relentlessly pursued her career in a highly specialised field – including eons at Uni and strange jaunts to remote rural australia – and would seem really rather Virgoan. Of course she has 0 degrees Aqua MC.

          10. taurean alchemist’s avatar

oh, got that wrong – my Pisces sister has 0 Capricorn MC. I suppose that makes more sense.

          11. Leonine Librarian’s avatar

Small sample of my career path.

My first job was cleaning cars for my Virgo father’s hire car company.Have sold shoes, bread, pottery, flowers. Can only sell it if I believe in it to some degree….have kept scary Tupperware Aunt at bay for decades.
Have worked as a researcher, and for a software company, and ran away to the Zoo one summer oh and Library….love the library.

Have felt better about my own twisty path after meeting a HR director that threw it all in to build and operate his own pirate ship.

          12. Blossom’s avatar

LL you can’t drop a nugget of info like that and leave it be. Built and operated a pirate ship – do tell more!!!!

I’ve never known what I wanted to be. On third career, and getting itchy for another. Always wondered what I would be when I grow up. More interested in what is round the next corner than following a path.

Uranus in leo trine mercury in aquarius, and Gem MC, has led me to be very creative and full of ideas. 10th is barren – is that why I have no idea what I want to do next?

Still, something interesting will come along – it always does.

          13. no name brand’s avatar

LL I have saturn in the 10th too in aries. My MC is amping at the moment – much ado about something.

TA, i have Jupiter in Taurus in 4th house. Only recently started doing a bit of work from home – LOVED it!! Have been lucky with real estate with that placement too.

FA, with your MC and Merc in Gemini AND in the 10th house – you are so meant for a communicating/presenting role!

          15. Leonine Librarian’s avatar

Blossom, I came across a lot of strange dream pathways people were realising in their day to day life when I was holidaying with the Libran Sailor man in 2002. As I remember it the pirate was in HR…but just looked at website but apparently he was in insurance…and sick of being rejected each day…he came to be a pirate on a day by day basis in a convoluted way. (well at least to my thinking…and I found it all a bit refreshing)

After leaving their jobs He and his wife tried to sail to the Caribbean but ran out of money at Panama. Had someone contact him about them needing a Captain for their not yet built pirate ship in Clearwater Fl …all they had to do was get there…so with $50 they set off to discover that it had fallen through. So they then went and made it happen themselves.

Happily a pirate now for 31 years.

          16. Leonine Librarian’s avatar

            No name brand,

have you found yourself resisting Saturn in 10th much …over the years that is? Have you found yourself edging towards embracing it? I’d imagine having all this happen in Aries gives quite a different flavour than Pisces…curious as always though on your take…

I can understand fishgirl … but try having Aquarius there. Makes you more or less bats and subject to unpredictable bouts of erratic and eccentric behaviour that is most unsuitable in the workplace. As well as the whole “so what’s the big deal about showing up at 8.30am on the dot … like so long as I get there sometime before lunch who cares??” thing. Having zero earth in my chart doesn’t help with that whole routine business either. I’ve manifested mine workwise as a freelancer in the creative fields. At the moment I’m very, very free. Read: broke. But only since the Global Financial Crapola. Before then I always had heaps of work without any advertising or whatever.

But for your Aries (not that I’m an avid Arian watcher but I’ll give it a shot) … I’d say it’s great to have it there on your midheaven. Bolshie. Never say die. Just continue headbutting object of desire/glass ceiling/closed door until it caves in. Things will probably pick up after Venus quits retro-ing. Maybe you’re meant to review/refine something in the meantime? Clarify your vision perhaps?

Read a funny thing on internet about that – apparently aquarian midheaven instills a desire to always be clever, knowing and to support that with learning in spades! flip side is hates not knowing something and will sometimes ignore inconv. facts not fitting world view.

i had a giggle about that one, so true.
            Edwina,
i also have been a tutor at university, for 5 years in an art school. roundly disillusioned by politics lack of respect and lack of money. i work in a library now- and do art projects.
i think it combines with my aries sun and taurus rising to be stubborn as fuq, and totally not into being told what to do. I also have lots of pisces in my chart and cancer moon, very flighty.

fishgirl, i think aries midheaven makes you the pioneering sort! someone charting new territory, being bolshie, a leader, the boss, in charge. a career which requires action- you’d probably not be the kind to sit for hours researching, or plodding along in an office job or you’d go mad. sounds like the venus retro is halting/slowing down your efforts to move forward or be able to put your best face forward (so to speak). and maybe therefore you’ll find that things magucally start happening again when venus goes direct- as i’d imagine venus conjunct MC would be tres auspicious in winning praise, looking good professionally, being ‘attractive’ to potential employers (i dont mean attractive physically, i mean as a candidate for work) etc.

my mercury in capricorn rules my MC- suited to serious thinking and endurance study. its a wierd little aspect to have as it is counter lots of fire in my chart, but it is the only stability/security aspect i have so its a good balance!

It’s the pitching i’m good at – some editors reckon i’m a better pitcher than actual puller-offerer, if that makes sense. See now your Cap MC would be a better puller-offerer than pitcher…success demands both, hey?

Pisces here with Gemini MC; I tend to get along well with geminis, perhaps this helps? Curious though — I have NO planets anywhere near here (all below the horizon) except for Chiron in Taurus. Can’t remember what Chiron’s about. I’m a little sympathetic towards it now, as far as celestial bodies go, seeing as he was the only one “awake” in the sky when I was born :)

Oh & David – COMPLETELY off topic but I dreamt of you last night. I was in a room of random people & you were there. You specifically sought me out to tell me there was a spell I could do with holy water, to regain a memory. I do have a very busy time at night, often wake up after extreme escapades. I will though meditate on your dream and see if any info comes up. Friends ring me from all over the world to tell me about what I was getting up to in their dreams. Maybe its that secretive moon in my 12th that for some reason has been giving me a busier dream than waking life over the last 10 or so years ?

Cute! We are sun/mc twinnies. Hmmm I’m often off on some creative tangent applying for random jobs that appeal (I am actually a real live grown up photographer amoungst other things) and reckon when I get turned down for jobs I am trying to follow the wrong path. I often apply for interesting ones that would take me on some career tangent but like you vagg (he he he) don’t get any love with them.

Reckon you are barking up wrong tree if you are not getting that one. I usually get the first one I apply for too. Have you thought about doing a workshop, or enrolling in a short course to get them juices floooowing?? I did one last year and it was the BEST thing I have ever done for getting juicy with the creativity. Looks good on the CV too. And by the way top 140 is FABULOUS!

Hi Vagg, it’s a bit of a cliche, but volunteering at something you love can lead to fulfilling work. You can use it to test out new ideas before committing and help create a job. I have no quals for my current work, but masses and masses of experience. It’s just my thing, but if you have brilliant biz juices going on, what about a community business?

And I would back GemRose in random applications. My bro applied for a dull job, but when they met him, they were so intruigued by his quals and experience, they created a new job to match them. Didn’t know what they needed until they saw it in front of them. And it was a major international business.

Gemini MC no other planets there, mercury in aries in the eight, sun in taurus in the 9th, jupiter conjunct neptune in the third, under a scorp cusp.
Lawyer, till a few years ago, before i came across with astrology (NN aquarius, venus opp aquarius, lots of aqua really…) i used to lve the law and politics, then i started to be a speach writer to some politics, then i found the enourmous pleasure that i had in writting (in my language believe me i can write much better…).
Then felt in love with astrology and know it seems that i lost my interest in the law at the same time i found this passion with astrololy.
I’m doind my best to fake that i still enjoy being a lawyer, but the fact is that i dont anymore.
I’ve read somewhere that no planets in the MC plus gemini MC kind of “doom ” you in profissional realms, because of so much energy being scattered…plus my mercury in aries in the eight is stationary direct, so i guess it makes the whole seaching, investigating process a little bit more soul consuming.
On a positive note i think it gives you the stamina for learning almost everything you want all by yourself, and that can give you pleasure and some sense of power, though it seems lately not money!

    Reply

    1. Blossom’s avatar

We’re almost twins Virgo Rising. Same but with Jupiter square neptune in scorp, and mercury just about direct. I fell out of love with my first career after less than 10 years in practice. Was actually doing more hours on voluntary work, as well as renovating my house and pursuing an active social life. As you say, scattered energies. Never been able to be single minded about anything.

Now work part time because I cannot cope with the stress of full time work and the limitations it places on all my other activities. Resigned myself to the fact that I will never have any money – live from hand to mouth on freelance work (and the occasional parental hand out!)

Stamina and doing things by yourself rings true. Teachers always complain that I will not take their word for something – have to find it out for myself. I like to think of myself as a renaissance woman – degrees in four completely different subjects. Only the first was undertaken for work, the rest have been to pursue an interest.

Soul consuming – I like that. I get far too involved in work and research. Each new project takes away a little part of my soul when I let it go. Conversely, I’m often accused of being too self contained. But I never get lonely or bored – there is always so much to learn about myself, others around me, new topics, the world, all the places I haven’t been …..
