I have a few e-mails re why i altered the Sun Sign name for Cancer to Kataka in the Nightly Scopes. The e-mails are amazingly non-narky. Okay, Cancer is Latin for Crab and the Crab is ONE of the symbols for the constellation that the Sun travels through from late June to late July. ie; if you born then, you are deemed “a Cancer.” Moon-Ruled, a mood-swinger, a sexy empath, nostalgic, home-loving & a fiend in biz. But the name has come to be more linked to oncological disorders.
I got a really emo yet lovely letter from a Cancerian girl writing from her boarding school & I was about to send her back this long-winded explanation. But then i just thought screw it & changed the name of it. For her. She said that whenever she googles her sign, it comes up with a disease and that it made her feel sad, sick and ugly etc etc.
Sooo another symbol for this sign is the Ancient Egyptian sacred scarab – symbol of immortality. In fact, i think – this is arguable – that the Scarab WAS the symbol for the sign until a myth involving Hercules & a Crab. Anyway, in the Nightly Scopes, Cancer is renamed Kataka – Sanskrit for Crab, Native American for “fort” and the name of Buddha’s horse. It all fits and there is a boarding school dormitory in the country where it’s already official.

Scarab is representative of the Sun God, rolling balls around like the earth going around the sun.
A fw hours ago, i saw an enormous scarab like beetle caught in the incoming tide & turned
it round to face away from the sea. Walked pretty slowly but reckon it would make the dunes in time.
They mean good fortune & were used as administration seals in Ancient Egypt. -
I think it’s beautiful you re-named it for a girl at boarding school.

Crabs feel pain and remember it. I just noticed this after reading your blog.

Oh great…..torturing sweet little hermit crabs with shocks.
When will we realise without those damn experiments that ALL living creatures
experience pain.-
I agree. Unfortunately, some people need scientific proof that creatures feel pain. Intuits have known all along.

hmmmm, have always loved scarabs and my ex partner, a jewellery maker at the time, would make these beautiful sterling silver scarabs. but i love being a crab too and i always feel a big pang when i see those crabs, in the markets in south east asia, all tied up with their little claws feebling waving around. saw lots of them all tied up and filed like in a filing system….. i like that kataka is the name of Buddha’s horse.
and mystic, thanks for the fabulous daily mystic today – so good to have that run down. dreams have been mighty powerful over the last couple of nights so it’s good to have that clarification esp about Pluto.

Of course we feel pain and remember it – crabs may forgive but NEVER forget. Shits me tho that people need proof that any living thing feels pain.
Don’t have a prob with Cancer name thing although I can understand others may as it is so negative – Kataka is beautiful Mystic – thank you. -
I love it! Thank you Mystic for finding us such a beautiful and meaningful new name. When I was small, the cancer thing used to get to me as well. I guess that’s because we are so sensitive!

re: renaming of the-sun-sign-formerly-known-as-Cancer….A Scorp gives big shout out to any Katakas feeling down about former negative associatuions to their name… I ONLY date other water signs and can correctly spot a gorgeous Kataka without even talking to them…Pisceans are ok but Katakas are THE most sensual, sexy, beautiful sun sign by a big margin…no argument…I pashed a girl on a well known Sydney dancefloor on Sunday night…I know that’s tres uncool but how can one help one’s self when faced with a sexilicious Kataka? Restraint is just impossible xxx

oh you are all so darling! This Kataka is very well pleased.
Hmm. Curiously enough I was never bothered by the association with disease, it was more like, YAH, that’s right, I CAN KILL. But I had history of vile temper as a child so was more like handy tool for me…
Must say, aesthete, LOVE your comment. We Katakas need to hear that more often than the usual drivel of being nowhere else at home baking cookies while in a raging mood swing.. honestly, I hate the fact more that our privacy interprets us to the rest of the world as shut ins.
Is so not true. I also notice Katakas sustain transformations very well..a little known fact acknowledged as we are all portrayed as clawing desperately on to the past. But having the gentle Moon as our mother lends itself to molting, very quietly while no one is looking about till next thing you know, you realize we weren’t quite as we were before…
May also explain my affinity for the sons and daughters of Pluto…

Fallen Angel your last paragraph explains it so beautifully, gorgeous!
aesthete: gorgeous too!

OMG. I still remember telling my sister (then 13) that her star sign was cancer, immediately after our mother had died of cancer. I’ll never forget the look that flickered across my sister’s face – not just mindful of the recent trauma but as though she herself had suddenly been diagnosed. In light of this, I think this is a cool development miss tic ;D
