Astro-Beauty: Eye-Lashes

esl045_cover

Citing your Sun, Moon, Venus and/or Rising Sign – what are your thoughts on Eye-Lashes…Are mascara ad claims a load of shit?

Is mascara toxic? Does the actual word ‘mascara’ really come from the ancient Arabic ‘mask’?  Is it better to just get lash tint? Would/could u get eyelash extensions OR risk (apparently) blindness by using one of the new swift-fix style druggie products for doll-like lashes in a few weeks?

Eyelash curlers – fabulosity incarnate or a tool of some anti-feminist devil? Are eyelashes the ‘curtains’ of the soul – brows being the frame and eyes the actual window – and if so, so what? Also, do you bat your lashes???

I do and yet i only realise I am doing it if a girlfriend points it out. It’s subliminal…And I love the blue-black lash tint but really, it only lasts a few weeks if that. Love eyelash curling, flip out with gunky mascara & don’t even enjoy the ‘ritual’ of applying it…

The Piscean Beauty Fanatic who is expert on everything from Khundalini Yoga to Botox says just olive oil EVERY night on the lashes makes them grow and it is obviously non-chemical/toxic but you have to do it for at least a month to see an effect.

moon in virgo, venus in leo, cancer rising….. loving eyelashes at the moment

I am a full advocate of the total eye treats every month (eyebrow tint & wax, eyelash tint) and absolutely adore extensions – the whole thing makes you look 100 times better and instantly tidy/well kempt…. mascara sucks, if it’s not all gluggy it’s dry and irritating or whatever… always some problem with it…… tinting is way better even though it only lasts a few weeks… and yes it can be uncomfortable but you just have to find a great beauty therapist who can actually apply and take it off without damaging you as not all can….

the first time i got eyelash extensions, men were like proverbial putty in my hands – i love it… i have them now and they are just divine

also now love my eyelash curler as have discover the superduper secret application method of……. heating it with the hairdryer first!
not so it burns, people – but so that it is warm and it sets them all day and night… curling your lashes opens up your eyes and makes you look extra gorgeous

mystic i love this, let’s do another one…. pedicures? night cream? hair removal?

trust a libran to come up with the best beauty tip I’ve heard all year – ,my libby moon is dancing with joy (en pointe, of course)…. am racing to the bathroom this minute to try curling my lashes!!

I use hauschka mascara, by the way – not gluggy, not irritating, cosmically created and anthroposophically sound – it doesn’t give one masses of lashes but I also use Hauschka liquid eyeliner and it adds to the ‘eye popping’ effect – as does a little white (also hauschka) eye shadow strategically applied.

when I was on stage I wore false eyelashes – felt bizarrely over done.

Love the look of false eyelashes for photo shoots and evenings, but are uncomfortable, but makes the eyes-POP!
Almost all of the mascara ads show the product on false eyelashes but do not divulge this to the consumers- so somewhat deceptive I think.
There’s new organic, green mascara companies and they are less irritating.
The new Physicians Formula Organics Mascara in black is very dramatic and easy to remove. Less flaky and irritating.
At first I thought it would a great yoga day mascara but would too au natural with smoky eyes- I was happily proven wrong.
Libran dreamchild- the extensions sound very hedonistic and decadent and I now want to try them.
I go from au natural fresh makeup to all out over-the-top dramatic and retro Hollywood makeup.
    Love the astro- beauty posts.
It’s a nice treat from plutonic-saturn energy in my life.

I have recently become OBSESSED with eyelash adornment. Just had them tinted dark brown. Obviously need the blue-black because it didn’t make that much difference. Plus it hurt.

Love the eyelash curler and happy to receive the top tip on heating beforehand!! I am using a fabulous Dr Hauschka mascara but they are generally very annoying to apply.

Will go and try the extensions asap.

    pisces sun, cap moon, gemini rising;

i quite like the idea of olive oil lash treatment (it is an AMAZING moisturiser, applying the extra virgin overnight makes you glow …like a virgin?… the next day).

i am big on emphasising eyes. but not all the fuss. natural beauty with occasional bursts of theatre to keep it fun. Tinting makes eyes sting..and $$.. am a mascara user, has to be good sexy mascara, but for practical reasons e.g. short outdoorsy trip may resort to tinting.

while i love natural, i also enjoy the transformation from bare face to party / fiesta face.

I have an old Zia I visited last year who’s skin looked fantastic & she relished telling me about this AMAZING moisturiser she uses every night, that just works wonders etc & then came out with a bottle of olive oil chuckling. I used it all throughout last winter! Gets a bit worrisome when you start to eye the balsamic & think about adding a spritz …

Aries Sun, Libra Moon, Cancer rising. What is there not to love about eyelashes?

You know when you are young and gorgeous, you can’t help but plaster on that Maybelline Great Lash. Now that we are older, Dior and Clinique are the go for fantastic lashes. Tinting is good but you still need that extra oomph that only comes from plastering.

Do you remember your first girl/boyfriend or first crush? I’ll bet that she/he had the dreamiest eyes and most gorgeous eyelashes? Swoon, a trip down memory lane.

When I was young and slim and cute, I do remember batting my eyelashes when i stepped, long leg first, out of my Mini Minor to ask if the garage attendant would check my tyres, oil, water etc. and fill the car up with $5 of petrol. Those were the days!

Thanks Mystic for this lovely interlude in my day.

don’t wear much makeup, but value that mascara makes my eyes – which i’ve been complemented on on occasion – stand out.
I can’t handle when sales people of any sort hassle you, but got completely sucked in by a makeup sales guy who noted my eye colour, hazel, and sold me some dark purple mascara ‘to bring out the green’. It’s great. Don’t wear it much, but smile when i put it on. smiling thinking about it now.
Those maybelline/rimmel ads do my head – who wants road width eyelashes? They look so tacky. The idea of tinting scares me – hair dye chemicals that close to your eyes? no thanks.

Ok….I have to tell you all about Eyelash Tinting (from a Beauty Therapists’ point of view).
I am so disappointed that out of these first few comments so many of you have had bad tint experiences. Lash Tinting when done well IS PAINLESS, it is SAFE as the specific tints/dyes are not the same as hair colour (hence why they only last the three to four weeks in a vibrant state) the stinging that occurs happens because the colour tint needs to be activated by an oxidant to deposit the pigment into the little air spaces inside the eyelash. This oxidant is a 3% peroxide solution it is very dilute and even though it can sting it CANNOT damage your eyes. BUT getting the tint into your eyes should not happen regularly if the person applying the tint is skilled you will never get a sting, and if it does sting removing the tint with MILK completely neutralises and soothes. The milk may be warmed with a few drops of hot water first for comfort.
Okay the other reason that lash tinting does not seem to last long is due to the natural loss of eyelashes, you will become very aware of how often you loose lashes if you have lash extensions done, but it is around the three -four week mark that you need to have refills done on them too.
I am probably biased but have to state that a lash tint experience in a Beauty Salon is much less likely to lead to sting-y eyes due to the comfort factor alone, neck jammed back into basin in the hairdressers with whole shop looking at you while you are ‘blinded’ just is not nice.
So if you have had a bad tint experience just keep asking your lusciously lashed friends where they get theirs done until you find a salon that can deliver the best beauty boost ever, with out any pain. Oh and Black or Blue Black is the ONLY way to go for lashes, browns and graphite are for tinting brows only.

I LOVE EYELASHES. Making the most of your eyelashes is always going to deliver the best look for any individual, I am so sad when women have applied spectacular eyeshadow or even just a smudge of earthy enhancement and then left their eyelashes naked, if your tint is wearing off or you are sensitive to coloured mascara even clear mascara (Australis) will define your eyes, but you need a back up mascara til you get back for the next tinting.
I love to go the whole hog, lash tint, lash curler, GREAT mascara(it is a never ending quest especially living nth Qld where the humidity makes it hard to keep it on lashes not cheeks) and the secret weapon TWEEZERMAN EYELASH COMB. (Got mine from David Jones) This really is a weapon, it has very sharp metal teeth that separate all of the lashes, even the best mascaras need a comb through, though wiping your mascara wand on a clean tissue EVERY time before you apply removes the GLUG leaving a nice amount of product. Then accept the fact that no matter how much you spend on your mascara it has a shelf life after you open it and introduce air and bacteria to the tube of only 4 MONTHS. THEN you must THROW IT AWAY.
I justify spending $40 on my fave mascara by using it every day, not saving it for good/going out. Clinique Lash Power is current fave, it comes off like TUBES with warm water in the shower, no raccoon eyes even at the beach.
Invest in a gentle eyemake remover, please don’t tug at the lashes and wipe hard round your eyes with fingers to get the stuff off, clinique, estee, and loreal all do good ones.
Last mascara tip, when you are wiping the wand on the tissue for the first time , place the tissue on the bench and gently push the tip of the wand down to bend it at an angle (instead of straight) you will find it is much easier to apply to your lashes with the angled brush, it will still go back in the tube just fine.

LOVE YOUR LASHES, they really do frame your eyes, and unfortunately they really do get shorter and sparser as you age.

    Enjoy the fluttering!

Just as long as not water proof as that is murder. I like things to come off easily.

I love lashes and always notice them. Mine are one of my best features I think, I’m lucky to have long ones. I love getting them tinted (and have never had much grief with it) but rarely get around to it! I am hopeless at applying mascara (lash trauma when i was young and i am sooooo blinkety). So I rarely wear it, and when I do I always end up having to remove some of it from the rest of my face after getting it everywhere. But when I can be bothered, it’s oh so fab. I use a Prescriptives one. The curler is just too fiddly/ scary for moi. I have hazel eyes too and like the idea of trying a dark purple mascara… hmmm.

My gorgeous ram nephew has the most luscious lashes and I have often noticed young boys do. My darling sis reckons they’re there to stop the grit getting into their eyes when playing in the dirt and such!

I just got waxed and pedicured today and feel like a new woman. I’ll be interested to hear astro beauty thoughts on pedicures. They are sooooo good!

Leo sun, Pisces rising, Cancer moon, Gemini venus – Love Love Love the blue black lash tint – I must have a good beautician as I can’t remember the last time it stung. Have never been able to use lash curlers, don’t spend much time on makeup but feel naked without tint or mascara. I’ve seen professional lash extensions (only a few on the outer lashes) make my sister look amazing but haven’t had an occasion yet to try it out. A good brow artist is the best investment you can make for your face, and I recommend a brow tint as well if you a fair to fairish.

    Stereotype of a Capricorn –
The only makeup I wear is mascara and I wear it everyday. I bat my eyelashes as a matter of course (flirting, buying coffee, asking colleagues to do things they don’t really want to do) My respect for a woman goes up if she knows how to use her lashes.
Have naturally black eyelashes so have never used the tint. Am currently using Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara in black and I swear it’s enough to make men give up their seats on the bus.

My eyelash routine varies. If I’m camping for some reason it seems vital to have a lash tint….blue black.

If I’m around the house I’m not bothering with anything but a clean face…and sunscreen if in the yard. My lashes except the absolute tips are dark.

Down the street is often just a swipe of mascara…and paw paw ointment on lips/or if having coffee with taurean friend sometimes the mineral makeup and red gloss …I already have eyelashes that curl so figure an eyelash curler becomes redundant…or this may be just laziness on my part.

I can do the dramatic eye if the occasion warrants it. It’s sort of nice to have it in reserve, so there actually is more impact.

I don’t deliberately bat my eyelashes, but it comes out as a mannerism if there is someone attractive about…(have had friends mention…with much laughter at my unconcious head tilts, hair tosses and eyelash batting ability)

There was a product (gone the way of the blue eyedrops & red toothpaste) called Talika,
that made your eyelashes grow, whether it did or didn’t, i don’t remember but
certainly remember my Mother applying every night to mine when a pre-teen.
Yeah, She of the Scorpio Beauty Regimes.

Always before the tints, used Clinique or Dior mascaras, thought the word came from Egypt
    meaning ‘to fascinate’.

    Thanx for all the tips…..fascinating.

I need to go to a professional and get my eyelashes tinted. Mascara is not my friend on so many levels. I would have thought I could have mastered it, but I cannot. : ( The only “mascara” that has ever worked for me is a clear version brought out by Australis cosmetics – but I gave up on it because it seemed ludicrous, and then I couldn’t find it – either that or I wasn’t terribly serious about it. : O

eeek! Thank you for astro-beauty! Libra Sun/Gemini Moon and I adore lashes. I actually carry my eyelash curler everywhere in case of emergency. I love Shu Uemura mascara but it’s too expensive – fabulous cheap mascaras made by Rimmel I love all of them. Those are great and don’t have to feel guilty about chucking them the minute they get clumpy.

There was an ‘eyelash bar’ at Selfridges when I was visiting London at Xmas…. it was amazing – the girl put fake eyelashes on me and they looked perfectly natural but amazing! i love them, I almost want to run and put them on right now.

    Capricorn… that’s all I know, still learning.

I usually wear mascara, but always muttered to myself about how I’d rubbed it all off by the end of the day. Hard on the lashes, but I’d do it unconsciously.

Then I tried Aveda Mosscara… technically not water/smudge-proof, but I don’t CARE! It doesn’t matter since my eyes no longer itch to the point of unconscious all-day scrubbing! Mascara stays on! Comfortably! It’s mandatory now, unless I’m feeling weepy, and sometimes even then.
