Pluto A La Mode

Vogue Italia

Italian designers are channelling Pluto In Capricorn brilliantly.

This is from an Associated Press article about the men’s fashion collections.

“…In these shaky economic times, Italian designers have chosen rags over riches for their fall-winter 2009-2010 menswear collections, currently previewing on the Milan runway…Gone are the trademark flashy fabrics, dandy designs and macho models, replaced by classic sporty styles in sensible wool, worn by almost boringly average young men….

‘At a time like this, you have to think positive and work hard,’ said Stefano Gabbana in a chat with reporters…

Miuccia Prada on Sunday evening used her minimalist wand to combat the crisis with one of her most essential collections ever. The almost all black and gray show featured jackets and coats with neither lapels nor buttons, slim slacks and plain sweaters. The only details in the collection were the myriad of studs, which dot white shirts, slacks and classic footwear, like mini nails securing the outfits to the body….”

Three tiny things I have noticed since Pluto went properly into Capricorn & the G.F.C etc:  Nobody I know is complaining about having to work too hard , staff in upmarket stores have lost all vestige of their previously sometimes snippy airs & holidays are passe. It’s now all about weaving mini-breaks into one’s day. ie; sleep, the gym, some relaxing scouring of the house from top to bottom.

Note also the models above. Other than their beauty & the interesting trend of monochromatic make-up with big hair concealing beige bandanna things, they could almost be three elite cleaners.

A question.. but how do the swankiest Leos feel about this? Is this anti-thesis to the whole point of being designer??

I suppose minimalism could be a performance aspect of fashion, but hopefully not at a ridiculous price tag. Oddly enough, this also makes me think of what fairy tale embodies Pluto in Cappo the most? I am thinking Cinderella, specially with the ashes, and the whole bit about cleaning all day long.

Sleeping Beauty would be somewhat Neptunian, but am a bit confused about Snow White – though I am guessing it would run along Aqua aspects, brotherly love, lightning bolt discoveries, the little people…

    industriously,

Hi FA, I think the story of the shoe maker’s elves fits the pluto in cap scenario as they worked quietly behind the scene and didn’t expect praise but helped rebuild another life :)

OMG Chesh that was my favourite book as a child and I still have it – beautiful, illustrated by a norwegian artist and all scratchy little lines and watercolour wash and your words just made me think it is the total archetype of an aspect of the relationship with one of my parents and my chidlhood – bonza tangential seed you planted there – the parent still gives me birthday cards in the shape of shoes – only I was the elf, I wonder if the irony will ever occur to them! – and I am presently analysing their role and effect on moi so you have really helped me. I have married a man who is descended from cobblers – and one of the first things he said to me is I’ve always wanted to know how to make leather sandals. With those words he stole my heart… I knew we were cut from the same hide.

aaaw, that’s a lovely story anonymous. Almost a fairytale itself. :)

If you live in Sydney, on Friday night at 8.30pm SBS is screening a new series – Fairy Tales Exposed: Facts Behind The Fiction: The secret life of snow white.

      afternoon Ms. FA,
i don’t know if it could be antithesis to the designer ethic…unless to a leo designer meant showing off wealth and fabulousness with ostentatious displays of whatever. the money’s still there (hmm unless we’re talking sharemarkets), it’s just changed form…so I’d like to think the ultra elite vein still exists, it’s jut gone undercover/changed form p’raps?

You mean like the aristocracy donning work clothes vs the usual silks and velvets, oh yes, definitely.

How very beige of them! I think the fact that it is so intentional strikes me as contrived. Whereas I always find it so charming when peeps show major style by donning whatever it is works for them, specially when its something along lines of a shirt they bought at the children’s section that cost all of 2 quid and looks fabulous next to their designer somethings.

That vogue cover shot is kind of Mussolini chic.

    Stalinista?

Going a bit far I think, even for Pluto in Cap.

Have to shimmie out of the mermaid tail to get into heels, david. Unfortunately, the tail doesn’t fit in the frame. Nor does the insignia, which says ’satsujinken’ ‘killer fist’.
      Watch out!

They do look like kinky vampire nuns or something don’t they? Stop salivating david.

woops hit submit too fast…their solution is to recycle designer coats, as commentator, Bill Cunningham queries, ‘ you don’t throw out antiques do you?’

Davidl I thought there some subtle faux nun fashion within that image too.

Absolutely, LL, I subscribe to this too. Peeps think I have a super extensive wardrobe but the truth is I’ve learned how to find classic pieces with enough of a twist that I end up updating and using for whatever relevant season – of course with the addition of certain accessories.

It also assuages my boredom, I have a few personalities to please when it comes to clothing! :)

I guess most of all, I feel that a woman should wear her clothes not the other way around, and sometimes being way too flush with cash can tempt one into being a clothes horse (been a victim of this a few times). I used to know a girl in Uni who was so devoted to designer whatever that she had a max of 3 outfits she rotated thru the week until she got a new one.

So…I get the discipline and the slightly elitist fervor, but I always used to think of her as a cartoon. Odd by-product of her minimalist designer wardrobe is that peeps never actually looked at what she was wearing!

Virgo natural sister and I have been in agreement since meeting when I was 21 and she 19…about how it’s more fun to be able to pull off a look that is individual to a person with minimum assistance from labels…We subscribe more to the buy classic pieces as you’ve described…sometimes independantly both turning up to things in very similar outfits though…I tend to still look for classic design regardless of whether it’s from a consignment shop, charity shop or designer…

Maybe I’m being a bit of a self ardent fabulist myself here, but I figure I’m what makes the clothes unique…stylish comfort with a good fit helps though.

Also just knowing what colours suit you…I don’t care how amazing the models cheekbones are above, those colours and no hair showing is bland.(though the finishing and detailing creates some interest)

Interesting you mentioning the uni friend with the niche cupboard.
I’ve advised Sagg and Aqua daughter’s to think about whether buying one really well cut garment is better than buying a lot of cheaper stuff that goes shapeless in under a month. To then sustain value from expending moola on said well cut garment they better have a mix of ways it can be worn and other stuff already existing that supports that new expensive purchase.

Was rather impressed by Sagg daughter’s trench coat this winter past, that she paid that bit extra for, but it looked fantastic with anything.
